The Arran Malt News! – Scotch Whisky News

What’s NEW THIS SPRING?

All the latest news from the Isle of Arran Distillery

Arran Distillery and Visitor Centre News

We have been busy over the winter months, and despite some stormy weather over the Christmas period, we have managed to push ahead with the construction of our brand new warehouse! Construction had to be halted for a couple of weeks again in February to allow for the nesting season of the pair of Golden Eagles which reside in the hills behind our Distillery, but we were soon back on track and can’t wait to get all our casks settled into their new home! Official 2012 production started on 13th February and we can’t wait to fill that warehouse with our precious new spirit.

Our Managing Director Euan Mitchell also made a special trip to Arran to present The National Trust for Scotland with a cheque for £6000 – we donated £1 from every bottle of our Limited Edition bottling “The Sleeping Warrior” to the Trust for the upkeep and safe maintenance of the pathways on Arran’s landmark mountain Goatfell.

The new season at the Visitor Centre starts again on 5th March and we are once again looking forward to welcoming many of our friends and fans across the world through our doors 7 days a week.  Faye and the team have been hard at work to get everything ready for our guests and we can’t wait to share some drams with you all. This year, we have some brand new exciting tour options to offer you, from the introductory “Oak” tour through to the VIP “Gold” tour.  More information on these tours can be found here on our web site.  Click for further details.

The Final Icon has flown the nest!

At long last, the widely anticipated release of the fourth and final Icon of Arran is upon us!  In tribute to those magnificent hillside residents of ours, we chose “The Golden Eagle” to close this extremely popular series and you can buy your bottle and complete your set straight away in our web shop.

“The Golden Eagle” is a bottling of 16 Bourbon Barrels and 7 Sherry Hogsheads from 1999 and is an outstanding example of the Master Distillers craft.  Creamy citrus notes with hints of tropical sweetness and a depth of character not dissimilar to the eagles themselves, will make your palate soar and take you right across to the Isle of Arran in all its splendour.

We are all very excited about this release and indeed there is plenty more where this came from.  Later this year, we will be launching a new bottling named “The Devil’s Punchbowl” after another celebrated stretch of Arran landscape, and we can assure you that this one is not to be missed.  Whisky is being selected as we speak and we are sure that you will agree that there are worse jobs in the world than searching through our warehouses to find just the right casks for this devilishly extravagant amber nectar.  Watch our web site for updates on this and other new releases planned throughout the year.

Why not browse our web shop for all the latest bottlings and special offers? Click  here to lead yourself into temptation!

Finally, our Open Day this year will be very special indeed, and is set to be the best one yet! On Saturday 30th June, our Open Day will take the form of the very first ever Arran Malt and Music Festival hosted by our very own Visitor Centre!  This looks set to be a fantastic event for all the family and will bring together the best produce on the island with our Single Malt and some fabulous musicians.  Put the date in your diary, come over and celebrate with us!

Best wishes to all from everyone here in Lochranza,

World’s Best Bars – “I need your help for pubs starting with Q!” A Request from The Master Blender – Scotch Whisky News

World’s Best Bars – I need your help for pubs starting with Q!

In the latest of these posts, the team and I are struggling for decent bars and pubs with a Q at the start – can you help us out?

Q

Queens Arms, Edinburgh, Scotland

Hidden below the cobbles of Fredrick Street in Edinburgh city centre is this fantastic pub. Scottish fare is the order of the day with locally sourced food, ales, and most importantly, whisky!

R

Rolling Stone, Los Angeles, USA

The first Rolling Stone Restaurant & Lounge in the USA is located in Los Angeles CA. It captures the edgy-yet-elegant spirit of one of the world’s most iconic music magazines and pours both Dalmore 12 and 15 single malt scotch.

Rum Jungle, Las Vegas, USA

Mandalay Bay Casino,.  Despite the name, this bar, situated in the Mandalay Bay Casino, has a host of great spirits on offer.  If rum isn’t your thing, then you can enjoy a glass of Dalmore while dancing the night away to Caribbean and Latin beats.

Remington Bar, Houston, Texas, USA:  (St. Regis Hotel)

An upscale Houston hotel bar if ever there was one, Remington Bar inside the St. Regis Hotel offers well-heeled, decidedly adult drinkers a playground of their very own. Fine cigars are offered at Remington Bar from the hotel’s private humidor further enhancing the already billionaire boys club atmosphere while fine liquor is poured from the bar.

RickHouse Bar, San Francisco, USA

If you are interested in artisanal cocktails, fine spirits, local beers or boutique California wines, then this is the place for you!

Ritz Carlton, Marina Del Rey, California, USA

Enjoy tantalizing cocktails and experience the unrivalled waterfront view whilst sampling a dram of Dalmore 12 years old.

Red Circle Cafe, San Diego, USA

A hot spot in the downtown Gas Lamp district.  Definitely worth a visit.

Rosewood Tavern, Los Angeles, USA

If you are in the hip and historic Fairfax district of Los Angeles, drop in and enjoy their extensive whisky list.

Rudy’s Pub and Grill of Newport Beach, California, USA – a great place for whisky loving sports fans, this bar is a veritable sports fan mecca.

Reserve 101, Houston, Texas, USA

A downtown, corporate after work hangout and then party spot as the evening progresses.  One of the best brown spirit back bars in Houston.

Red Lion Pub, Houston, Texas, USA

Manned and owned by British ex-pats makes the Red Lion Pub an authentic Brit bar in the heart of Houston.  Great atmosphere and serves up some good old traditional pub grub.

So, who has a whisky question for me this week?

Another week, another chance to ask me any questions you may have about whisky…

As always, it’s good to see and hear what people are saying about whisky but if you want to ask me what the value of a bottle is or what it’s worth (two very different things!) then you’re better asking the like of McTears than me.

New Arrivals at K&L California – Whisky News

Scotland – Single Malt Scotch

1988 Glenrothes Speyside Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($109.99)

United States – Bourbon and Rye

Four Roses K&L Exclusive Single Barrel OESV Cask Strength Bourbon 750ml ($59.99) This barrel, aged 10 years and 6 months at the distillery, is from formula OESV and it’s the most utilitarian whiskey we’ve yet selected from Four Roses. It’s not the richest, the spiciest, the most esoteric, or the sweetest, but I believe it to be the most balanced and delicious. At 59% you’d expect it to be a monster, but it’s quite restrained, almost brooding in its profile in that you expect it to explode at any moment. It never does, however – it remains in check and keeps its distance. The fruit is there, lush and soft, but it stays in the background. The richness is there, but it’s not obvious. The spice is robust, with hints of cherry and banana struggling to be tasted, but still there’s some reluctant force holding it back. The result is dangerously drinkable Bourbon, one that takes three or four sips just to get a grasp on before you know what’s hit you. There’s no denying that it’s good, even great – but there will be fierce attempts to penetrate its core and understand what its all about. This Bourbon will not cave, however. It just wants to be drunk, not contemplated. It seeks to be enjoyed, not studied. It demands to be appreciated, but it will not beg for your attention. Who knew a Bourbon could be so anthropomorphic? -David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer

“The A-Z of the World’s Best Bars: O and P” – So declares The Master Blender – Scotch Whisky News

The A-Z of the World’s Best Bars: O and P

We’re in the second half of the alphabet now! Cracking on with the bar suggestions – and thanks to everyone who has posted a suggestion or tip. Plenty of bars for the team here to be checking out!

O

Old Stationhouse, London, England

Old Stationhouse is a new dining pub which opened in January 2008. The building with its stunning architecture, ballroom and stone arched facade was built at the same time as the railway, and at one time was the waiting room for Chiswick station.

Oran Mor, Glasgow, Scotland

Oran Mor means ‘great melody of life’ and this bar is certainly is one of the finest restaurants, nightclub and bar space that the city has to offer. This converted church is a sight to behold and hosts a varied programme of entertainment from comedy, to club nights and even has its own A Play, A Pie and A Pint, theatre series during the week (although we would prefer it was called a Dram and A Drama!).

Olive Kitchen and Bar, New Delhi, India
The Olive Bar and Kitchen is a rustic hideaway where good food, laughter, culture and conversation come together in a delightful Mediterranean melting pot.

P

Pump House, Bristol, England
Situated in a prime Bristol waterside location close to where the city docks meet the River Avon, this acclaimed gastropub is housed in a former Victorian pumping station. The Pump House provides a perfect destination for those in search of exquisite food and quality beverages, in fabulous surroundings.

Pot Still, Glasgow, Scotland
This bar is a sure fire place to keep whisky aficionado’s contented. This old bar in Glasgow houses one of the biggest whisky ranges in the city and the only downside we can see is that it is just too hard to choose which whisky to enjoy!

Paradise Point, San Diego, USA

Located on a private 44-acre island, with tropical gardens, lagoons and amazing scenery. If that’s not enough to convince you to visit then they also have an excellent bar selection and menu available.

Post 92, Pune, India
A well known fine dining lounge in Pune, famous for its innovative cocktails. Try its signature ‘Hot Toddy’ – it’s delicious.
