FWL Whiskey Selection: Highland Park Thor – Scotch Whisky News

Last weeks email featured this years 2012 Drammie Award Winner for Packaging Design, Mackinlay’s “Shackleton” Rare Old Highland Malt, and those of you who acted quickly were able to secure what may have been the final inventory available in the US, certainly at that price.

This week we’re featuring an even rarer whisky…the one that was the first runner up to the Shackleton whisky for the 2012 Drammie Award: Highland Park “Thor” 16 YO Single Malt Whisky.

Thor represents the first spectacular offering for Highland Park’s stunning Valhalla Collection.  This collection will be a range of four unique whiskies, to be released annually, that all take inspiration from the Nordic gods of legend.  In honor of the great Norse warrior Thor, and in celebration of its own unwavering Norse heritage, Highland Park has produced what is unequivocally a phenomenal whisky….but then again, have you ever had a Highland Park you didn’t like?

With a natural strength like its namesake, and drawing influence from the environment unique to Orkney, Thor is a truly elemental spirit. Distilled where sea turns to ocean, this 16YO single malt is a meeting point of nature’s forces, exuding a dynamic and bold character on the surface, but with an unexpected softer side at its heart.

Our friend Chris Hoban of the Edinburgh Whisky Blog described Thor as “a smoky whisky, but very very drinkable…Frighteningly tasty. It would be 120 pounds well spent, but get ready to buy another bottle, as this is really really good. Not my most eloquent description. I am just enjoying it too much. It’s lovely. Now I just need to find 120 notes...”

With only 23,000 bottles released worldwide, this limited edition whisky is bottled at a robust 52.1% ABV, and comes housed in a unique wooden frame which echoes the fearsome contours of a traditional Viking long ship.

Fortunately for us all, our man Nicky “The Neck” has a bit of a Norse god thing going on, and was happy to use his hammer-technique to secure what could be the last few bottles available in the US.

And so, I’m thrilled to offer you the opportunity to acquire a bottle Highland Park “Thor” 16 YO Single Malt Whisky for $250/ bottle (limit 1 bottle per customer please).

I urge you to act swiftly on this if you are interested. This is another once in a lifetime chance to acquire a highly collectable bottle of whisky…but then hide it when you get it. Because once it’s gone…

And until next week…have fun!

DISTILLER’S TASTING NOTES

Appearance: Rich amber, with an iron ore glow

Nose: Concentrated and forceful, with an explosion of aromatic smoke, pungent fresh ginger, antique copper, stewed plums, and golden syrup. With water, earthy notes emerge, like a garden after a heavy rain shower.

Palate: Thor’s high strength grabs the palate and refuses to let go. Initially dry, with fiery gingerbread then vanilla, blackberries, fresh mango, peach and hints of cinnamon. As its big flavours swirl around the mouth, some softer, sweeter notes develop, giving Thor an unexpected layer of complexity and depth.

Finish: The finish thunders on, leaving behind lingering notes of sweet vanilla and an intense spiciness.

Ralfy Publishes Whisky Review #272 – Scotch Whisky News

www.ralfy.com ask you to join him with Whisky Review 272 – Laphroaig 10yo (Islay Region) . . . where the rain never stops, even when it’s dry!!!

18 years of Friends of Laphroaig – Islay Sunday on Whisky Intelligence

Friends of Laphroaig
@twentyone signifies our commitment to responsible marketing. Recipients must be 21 years of age or older.

Dear Friends of Laphroaig,

Eighteen years ago in May, the first ever Friend of Laphroaig stood proudly on his very own square foot of Islay. Since then, over half a million of you have claimed your land and joined him as Friends of Laphroaig.

During that time we have shared some momentous moments with our FOLs – we’ve witnessed wedding ceremonies on the plots, ashes scattered on them and we’ve even met some FOLs with Laphroaig tattoos.  It really has been a magical eighteen years.

The Friends of Laphroaig tartan

To mark such a momentous occasion, we thought it was about time that we created an official Friends of Laphroaig tartan.

Your help has been invaluable to us over the years, from shaping the new website and designing the FOL crest logo, to the creation of the much loved Quarter Cask expression. It was only natural, therefore, that you would be our first port of call when it came to designing this tartan. Who better to design the FOL tartan than an actual FOL?

We’ve created a simple and fun tartan making app to help you generate your designs. It’s quick and easy to use, you just pick your colours and band sizes and we generate the design for you right there and then. Once your tartan has been submitted it will appear in our gallery along with all of the other submissions and FOLs will be encouraged to vote for their favourite designs.

Create tartan Tartan voting gallery

The top 20 designs will be judged by the distillery team and the overall winner will become the official FOL tartan. The winner will receive a luxurious kilt produced to their design by Gordon Covell of the Islay Woolen Mill. You may recognise Gordon’s name from our website, where we have a short video of him in action. He is also known for creating the tartans worn in films such as Braveheart, Forrest Gump and Rob Roy, so you can be assured of the finest craftsmanship.

If designing your own tartan doesn’t appeal, you can still help to determine the winner by voting for your favourite in our gallery. This will be known as our official tartan for many years to come so it is important to us that you all play a part in its creation. You have until 31st May to submit your tartan or to vote on a winner.

I’ll be raising a dram to the Friends of Laphroaig as often as I can during this birthday month; I hope that you can join me wherever you may be in the World!

To another eighteen years of FOL!

Slàinte
