KWM Calgary- SALE, SALE, SALE… Ardbeg Day & More! – Whisky News

KWM-Header

Greeting from Scotland! I am nine days into a trip through Scotch Land! Today is Day Six of a Speyside and Highlands tour I’m guiding. At present I am writing you from beautiful Inverness, overlooking the River Ness. Before the formal tour I spent three busy days on the west coast in Campbeltown and on Islay. I haven’t had time to blog about it, though I have plenty of notes and pictures to share over the weeks ahead. You can get a taste of my travels by checking out my twitter feed: @scotch_guy. You can get a sense of some of what we’ve been doing, seeing and most importantly, tasting!

Our birthday sale is this weekend, today through Sunday. The sale is in store an on-line only. NO PHONE ORDERS! All of our wines are at least 15% off, all non-SMWS whiskies are at least 10% off, and all of our beers are 5% off. Please note this applies only to in-stock items and not special orders. Details on the whiskies discounted above 10% can be seen below along with sale rules.

Next week is a busy week for tastings. We have an exceptional Tomintoul and Glencadam tasting coming up on Tuesday for the very reasonable price of $55. We will be sampling 7 whiskies including the stunning new Glencadam 21 Year (which I sampled at the distillery Monday) and a stunning Tomintoul 1977 vintage, which retails for $809.99. We sold three bottles of it a few months ago, and we’ve just brought in the last three in the market!

On Friday night the Companions of the Quaich are hosting a special tasting with Beth Havers, brand ambassador for Glenfiddich and Balvenie. The event will feature a very cool deconstruction tasting of the Glenfiddich 15 year Solera, including 4 cask strength barrel samples of Glenfiddich. It will also include a pair of very rare Glenffiddichs including the 1987 Anniversary Vintage, $1,600.00, a couple of other expressions. Please email: scotchguy@kensingtonwinemarket.comfor more details.

Finally, Ardbeg Day is coming up in just over 2 weeks. We have some great events, prizes and whiskies on tap to celebrate the big day. Late morning there will be a friendly Ardbeg Soccer match, registration is $20 and includes a limited t-shirt, swag, and a dram or two. At 2PM, the main show, Ardbeg Day, starts at KWM. We’ll be holding festivities, games a BBQ and tasting in the back parking lot and store. This will be your first opportunity to taste the Ardbeg Auriverdes… Registration is $40, is limited to around 60 participants, and also includes a cocktail and appetizers at the Buchanan’s Chop House after-party. More details below.

I’m home Monday, and will have lots to catch up on. Please note all replies to this email will go to our web manager Christine Lunder. I hope you have a great long weekend, and be sure to check out the sale, it only happens a couple of times a year. And I hope to see you at one of the 3 great events mentioned above over the next two weeks.

Ardbeg Day 2014

Festivities Kick Off Saturday May 31

As Canada’s first Ardbeg Embassy, Kensington Wine Market is playing host to Ardbeg Day Festivities in Calgary May 31. The distillery’s Ardbeg Day release this year is the Auriverdes, or Green and Gold. This is a nod to the World Cup of Soccer in Brazil, but also to Ardbeg’s iconic green bottle and golden nectar. The theme this year is soccer, and that will be no different here in Calgary. We’re organizing a match of Ardbeg Green vs. Gold soccer at a field near Kensington Wine Market. Participation costs $20, but will include a special t-shirt, some swag and a dram or two. Two teams of 15 will be assembled in the school yard fashion from those who register. Limited to 28 participants. It’s been a wild spring here, and in the Scottish tradition the game will go ahead come bad or worse weather!

Later in the day festivities will to the Kensington Wine Market where we’ll be hosting fun activities between 2 and 5. There Ardbeg range will be available for tasting, along with new Auriverdes and some Ardbeg cocktails. Braizen Meats will be on hand serving up BBQ and there will be fun games. Registration costs $40 and is limited to around 60 participants. You need not register for one to participate in the other. The Kensington event registration includes a cocktail and appetizers at Buchanan’s Chophouse which is hosting the after party, from 5PM on.

Don’t hesitate in purchasing your Ardbeg Day tickets. Events are expected to fill quickly.

1. Ardbeg Day Soccer Match – 11:30-1:30 Saturday May 31 – Limited to 28 Participants – $20
2. Ardbeg Day at KWM – 2:00-5:00 Saturday May 31 – Limited to 60-80 Participants – $40

Whisky Ramblings Via Video #87

Mark Dermul, Belgian Whiskyblogger, tries another Auchentoshan. The distillery does not need an introduction from him, he has talked about it so many times already. So let him focus immediately on the whisky, the newly released Auchentoshan American Oak, matured solely in first fill bourbon casks. Oh, yeah, he shot it at the Lars Homestead from Star Wars in Tunisia, but that is only a detail…

Silent Distillery Profile; Caperdonich – Scotch Whisky History

 photo e5716ba1-a147-46dc-8b91-74ea721d15f9_zps401ce892.jpg

Silent Distillery Profile; Caperdonich (Capper-don-ick or kapperDOHnich)

by Lawrence Graham

Operational: 1898-2002 but silent from 1902 to 1965

Region: Speyside

Neighbors: Glen Grant

Address: Rothes, Morayshire, AB38 7BS

Last Owner: as of December 2001, Chivas Brothers Ltd, Groupe Pernod Ricard.

The name Caperdonich means ‘the secret well’ and this distillery is most commonly known as Glen Grant Number 2 (until 1965) and Customs & Excise insisted that the make be piped over the road to Glen Grant Number 1 which was located directly across the street. This pipe became famous as the ‘whisky pipe’ and the locals were not adverse to drilling holes in the pipe to liberate some spirit.

Caperdonich was originally built by Major Grant in 1898 due to increasing demand however its early production life was short lived because in 1902 it was shut down and much of the equipment was transferred to Glen Grant as spares. I have read that the stills at Caperdonich were the same as those at Glen Grant, as was the water source and the supplier of malt yet Caperdonich never attained the quality of Glen Grant.

The collapse of the firm of Pattisons of Leith contributed to a general slow down in the industry and during this period the number of operating distilleries in Scotland fell from a high of 191 to a low of 132 in 1908.

In 1965 after a very lengthy silent period of nearly 65 years Caperdonich was rebuilt by the Glenlivet & Glen Grant Distillers Ltd and was soon producing whisky once again and in its first year produced 350,000 gallons of spirit. This reopening coincided with a general expansion of capacity in the industry.

Soon after in 1967 the distillery was expanded by the installation of two new steam heated pot stills, a modern tun room and the latest technology which allowed the distillery to be operated by a staff of only two. About a third of the malt required by produced at Glen Grant and the remainder was brought in thus no barley or peat was on site.

In 1977 the distillery was taken over by Seagram’s of Canada Limited. In its short operating life Caperdonich never developed the reputation as a quality malt and was destined to be hidden away in the various blends of Chivas Regal, Queen Anne, Something Special and Passport.

Caperdonich was never bottled as a single malt and it was only offered to the market by the independents of Gordon & MacPhail, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Cadenheads. Through my research into the history of Caperdonich I read again and again of unflattering descriptions of the whisky but I firmly believe that any Scottish distillery is or was capable of producing whiskies that would score over 90 points. In the case of Caperdonich this is evidenced by 3 casks as reviewed by Jim Murray in his 2006 Whisky Bible; Members Legacy 1967 Aged 36 years cask no. 4945 95 points, Members Legacy 1967 Aged 36 years cask no. 4947 96 points and Douglas Laing Platinum Old and Rare Caperdonich Aged 36 years 96 points. To quote the author in regard to the Platinum Old and Rare Caperdonich…… “Awesome. So there we have it. A distillery that can’t live day to day because its general spirit is so average can, in the right conditions, offer one of the greatest whisky experiences on Earth. Such is the beauty and tragedy of whisky.
