• Four Roses K&L Exclusive OESK (9 years) Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon (750ml) ( $66.99) The second in a string of casks we purchased directly from Four Roses distillery in Kentucky this past Fall, this nine year old OESK formula Bourbon is one of the creamier whiskies we’ve tasted from the producer in some time. The nose is a continuous stream of pencil shavings, black pepper, and oak, but that spice turns into a warm and expansive wave of full-bodiedness with herbaceous flavors carrying through the undertow. This is an incredibly oaky Bourbon; “oak” in the sense of freshly cut wood and foresty notes, rather than toasted vanilla or creme brulee flavors we typically think off. It’s also quite peppery, but something about all that creaminess prevents the whiskey from ever drying out on the palate. It’s a whiskey that seem to glide over the tongue with weight, while simultaneously stimulating it with intense doses of pepperiness. In the wine world, we might call that the balance between fruit and acidity. In the case of this Bourbon, however, it’s a perfect yin and yang: texture combining with spice to create absolute pleasure. Only 140 bottles available.

LOCH FYNE BUNNAHABHAIN 14 YEAR OLD

One of our all time favourite Bunnahabhain whiskies – we think this is outstanding. Distilled in 2001, this whisky was then filled into a top quality sherry butt where it matured for 14 years. Distilled at 48% volume, it is limited to just 960 bottles.

Stewed winter fruits with cinnamon are followed by gentle bursts of sweet satsuma and zesty lemon, before settling on soft and gently smoked heather and a white peppery warmth. The balance of flavours is perfect. The finish combines turfy peat, liquorice, and a drying charred oak and spice.

Whisky Ramblings Via Video #122

Mark Dermul, Belgian Whiskyblogger, tries a duty free Speyside whisky. Glenfiddich launched the Cask Collection for Global Travel Retail. The three bottlings are the Select Cask, the Reserve Cask and the Vintage Cask. The series celebrates the Solera marrying process in which several casks are put together in the handcrafted Solera vat at Glenfiddich. He tried the first in the series, the Reserve Cask, which turned out to be a summery dram indeed. The video was shot on location in Edinburgh, near the Royal Yacht Britannia and on Arthur’s Seat.

BBC and The English Whisky Co.

BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme is calling on people in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to nominate their favourite producers, workplace cooks, local markets and food heroes.
