YUMI (CHICHIBU DISTILLERY CONFIRMED)

At Maltstock 2014 we had a Japanese Whisky Battle Masterclass between Tatsuya (then Suntory brand ambassador, now owner at the Highlander Inn) and Yumi (Chichibu brand ambassador ). The battle between Japanese biggest and smallest distillery was a fierce one and certainly one to remember. Tatsuya is still licking his wounds but Yumi will be back with a relaxed Japanese Masterclass this year.

AA Whisky Shop Header

AILSA BAY

AA WS1

A new whisky which has created its very own position on the flavour map!  A uniquely balanced single malt whisky which combines the flavours smoky and sweet perfectly. Distilled at the trailblazing Girvan distillery, Ailsa Bay’s singular vision of precision-balance in whisky is driven by whisky visionaries Peter Gordon, Brian Kinsman, John Ross and Conn Lynch. Bottled at 48.9% volume.  Official Tasting Notes:  Palate: Zingy, peaty kick layered with beautiful sweetness. A meaty character too – crispy rasher with a hint of maple syrup.

GLENFIDDICH 1992 WHISKY SHOP EXCLUSIVE

AA WS2

Distilled on 13th March 1992, matured in a refill bourbon cask, and bottled at 55.6% ABV. This whisky really shows off the Glenfiddich distillery character, with lots of sweet, fruity notes, including apple, pear, and just a hint of oak and spice.  Click here to discover how this whisky was created and selected.  Tasting notes:  Apple, oak and citrus combine beautifully to create a warming and lasting whisky.

LADYBURN 1974 40 YEAR OLD THE WHISKY SHOP EXCLUSIVE

AA WS3

Ladyburn was the shortest-lived distillery in Scotland and is therefore source of some of the rarest malt whiskies in the world.  Built by William Grant & Sons on the same site as their Girvan grain distillery, Ladyburn produced malt whisky for less than ten years from 1966 to 1975 and was then demolished.  Watch the video of this exceptionally rare whisky here.  Cask 89/199 No.74 has produced only 157 bottles.

The Whisky Exchange “Amrut Everest – Standing by Nepal” – Indian Whisky News

Amrut Everest – Standing by Nepal

Posted: 10 Feb 2016 07:29 AM PST

Behind the scenes, The Whisky Exchange is a very international company. We have people from all over the world throughout the business, from Spanish web developers to Romanian photographers, Portuguese designers, Finnish spirits advisers and even the occasional Scot. Among the variety of nationalities, we have a strong contingent from Nepal and when we heard about the devastating earthquakes in the country last year, we decided to do something. Cue a charity whisky bottling – Amrut Everest.

Originally launched at The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2015, Everest is a collaboration between TWE and Amrut. It’s a single cask which yielded about 100 bottles, first offered to those who had come to the show and tried it. We’ve got a small number left, so are now opening up those remaining bottles to everyone else.

AA Amrut

AMRUT EVEREST CHARITY BOTTLING IN AID OF THE HELP NEPAL NETWORK, £150

Nose: Honey-glazed apples, creamy porridge with a squeeze of lemon, and gentle spiciness. It develops marshmallow and banana notes, as well as vanilla cream and more zingy citrus.

Palate: Big, rich and spicy, with lemon, dried tropical fruit, cinnamon fireballs, foam bananas and sugar-sprinkled raisins, before picking up dark and earthy notes of black liquorice, clove and cardamom seeds.

Finish: Liquorice and spice, with lingering ripe red apple, black pepper and buttery biscuits.

Comment: Classic Amrut, with spice and fruit well-balanced, and excellent intensity of flavour. And to focus on the outside of the bottle for a moment, the label is some of our design team’s best work yet.

The proceeds from the sale of the whisky are all going to the Help Nepal Network, which is providing volunteers and on-the-ground supplies in the areas still trying to rebuild after the earthquakes.

We’ve been collecting money for Nepal for almost six months and have already raised £225,000 thanks to the Karuizawa tasting at The Whisky Show. One of our directors is heading over to the country next month to speak with those affected and see how we can help further.

Stay tuned for more details, but in the meantime, grab a bottle of Amrut Everest.

Gordon & MacPhail Named Drinks Wholesaler of the Year – Scotch Whisky News

AA Drinks Wholesaler of the Year

Gordon & MacPhail named Drinks Wholesaler of the Year

Gordon & MacPhail has been named Drinks Wholesaler of the Year at the Drinks Retailing Awards 2016.

The judges said the Elgin-based company, one of the UK’s top independent specialist wholesalers, “provides an all-round package which it delivers with high standards of service.”

Organised by Off Licence News, the Drinks Retailing Awards, held at The Dorchester in London on 2 February, brought together hundreds of leading retailers and key suppliers.

Established in 1895, and owned and managed by the third and fourth generations of the Urquhart family, Gordon & MacPhail stocks 4,000 product lines, including more than 800 wines, a wide range of beers from Scottish microbreweries, ciders and premium spirits. The company also aims to stock every UK distillery bottling of Scotch Whisky available in the UK.

Stephen Rankin, Gordon & MacPhail’s Director of UK Sales, who picked up the award, said: “We are delighted to win this award for the fourth time in five years.

“We have a skilled and dedicated team at Gordon & MacPhail and this award is testament to their hard work.

“We work closely with all our customers to ensure our service meets their needs and continually refresh our product portfolio to make sure we provide the best quality products on the market.”

Gordon & MacPhail employs 150 staff at its base in Elgin and has a 20-strong sales team that covers the length and breadth of the UK. The company operates wholly-owned and duty paid warehouses along with its own transport network, supplemented by courier.

About Gordon & MacPhail

The family owned and managed firm of Gordon & MacPhail is located in Elgin, Scotland. The iconic retail shop on South Street still thrives today on the site where the business began in 1895. Since those early days the company has grown significantly and has business interests as a bottler, exporter, distiller and wholesaler.

As a wholesaler

Gordon & MacPhail is one of the UK’s leading independent specialist wholesalers and distributors, stocking over 4,000 products, including an extensive portfolio of wines, spirits and UK specialist beers and ciders.

As a bottler and exporter

Since its foundation, Gordon & MacPhail’s policy has been to send casks to distilleries throughout Scotland, fill them with “new make” spirit and mature them either at the distillery of origin or in the firm’s own bonded warehouses in Elgin.

The World’s Leading Malt Whisky Specialist, Gordon & MacPhail bottles more than 300 expressions of Single Malt Whisky under various ranges – selling them throughout the UK and exporting to more than 50 countries worldwide. In 2009 and 2013 the company won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.

As a distiller

Gordon & MacPhail owns Benromach Distillery located on the outskirts of Forres.  Established in 1898, the distillery went through many changes of ownership and closures before being “rescued” by Gordon & MacPhail, who purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five year period before it was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.
