The Scotch whisky distilleries using worm tub condensers

While shell and tube condensers are more modern, easier to repair and thought to provide better copper contact, some distilleries still use traditional worm tubs and maintain that this type of condenser affects the characteristics of their spirit (texturally complex, meaty and sulphury are the typical notes given). This blog post lists the Scotch whisky distilleries that use worm tub condensers.

Fruity, Floral & Fascinating 🥃 – Edinburgh Whisky Academy News

Vic Cameron, one of our whisky lecturers says: “Esters are one of the groups of flavour compounds that we find in malt whisky. You create an ester by combining an acid with an alcohol, and these esters then give you the fruity, floral aromas that we can get in some Scotch whisky. You can make esters in quite a few parts of the process. You do it in fermentation, you do it in distillation, and you also create them during maturation.”

Luxury Scottish Retreat, Linn House, Welcomes Seafood Master, Jack Stein, For The Spring Edition Of Its Supper Series

Linn House, the picturesque and undiscovered ‘home of whisky’ in Speyside, will reopen its doors for the second edition of its unforgettable food and whisky experience, The Supper Series, coinciding with the renowned Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival from Wednesday 30th April to Sunday 4th May 2025.

This Spring, Linn House welcomes celebrated chef Jack Stein, Chef Director at Rick Stein Restaurants, who will tempt guests with a seafood-forward menu, highlighting the fresh flavours from his Cornish home and the local Moray Coast, paired with a selection of world-renowned Scotch whiskies. This one-of-a-kind dining experience will celebrate the natural harmony between fresh seafood and expertly crafted whisky, offering guests a journey through taste and tradition.

The intimate dining series will take place amongst the stunning surroundings of Linn House, the luxury guest retreat owned by Scotch producer Chivas Brothers, makers of globally recognised whiskies including The Glenlivet and Aberlour. Jacques-Henri Brive, Head of Luxury at Chivas Brothers, said: “Jack Stein’s seafood mastery is a perfect counterpoint to our expertly crafted whiskies, celebrating craftsmanship and flavour in new and unexpected ways. Jack Stein, Chef Director at Rick Stein Restaurants, said: “I’m incredibly excited to swap the Cornish coast for the rolling hills of Speyside as part of my festival residency at Linn House. My approach to cooking respects and elevates seafood in all forms – and I see whisky as being just as complex of a spirit as it is an ingredient. It’s going to be a truly special event and I can’t wait to share it with our guests.”

The Silent Season at Laphroaig – Scotch Whisky News

Here at Laphroaig, craft is at the core of everything we do. Every bottle we produce throughout the year is a product of passion, mastery, and determination.

Those of you who have visited our distillery, or any Friends with a special interest in the process of making Scotch whisky, will be aware of all the important equipment being used here on Islay. From mash tun to spirit still, our machinery works around the clock, helping our staff produce and perfect each of our unforgettable whiskies.

As you can imagine, with such a consistent production schedule, the upkeep of this equipment is crucial. That’s why we at Laphroaig have what we call “Silent Season”.

LEARN MORE

What is Silent Season?

Silent Season – our term for a period of maintenance shutdown – typically occurs in July. And as all Friends may know, it is not currently July.

However, in 2025 we will be taking the rare step of observing two Silent Seasons. Prior to our typical three-week hiatus in July, which is based around a traditional period of water shortages on Islay, we will also be halting production from April 7th to May 3rd to conduct additional engineering work.

While this scheduled maintenance may mean some areas are off limits, our Friends and visitors are always most welcome at our distillery for a tour. In fact, Silent Season provides its own unique aspects on our tours – with typically sealed equipment temporarily opened up to look inside.

Must-See Pricing on a “Real-Deal Old-School Ardbeg” – Scotch Whisky News

One-Time Pricing on a Scotch Treasure

Ardbeg 19 Year “Traigh Bhan – 2023 Release” Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

(750ml) (Previously $375) ($199.99)

“This is exceptionally special whisky…it’s an astonishing old Islay that
no lover of the ‘Beg should miss.” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

Ardbeg, situated on Islay’s south shore, is renowned in the whisky world for its bold, peaty expressions and unwavering quality. The distillery’s limited “Traigh Bhan” series is highly sought after, with each annual batch eagerly anticipated and often selling out within days of release. Not only is today’s parcel offered at market-low pricing, it beats that mark by a significant margin—it’s nearly impossible to find under $250, and most retailers are happy to sell it for over $300. For cult-caliber, collectible whisky, this offer represents one of the best opportunities you’ll find on the market.

Ardbeg 19 Year “Traigh Bhan – 2023 Release” Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $375) ($199.99)

This exceptional expression from Islay’s renowned south shore is among the few long-matured Islay whiskies available today. The striking rocky coastline stretching from Port Ellen to Ardbeg culminates at the picturesque Traigh Bhan beach, known locally as the Singing Sands. Pronounced “Tri-van,” Traigh Bhan translates to “heavenly vista,” perfectly encapsulating the allure of both the location and the spirit. While visiting this magical locale offers an unparalleled experience, a fleeting moment of its essence can be captured through this exquisite whisky.

The 2023 release of Traigh Bhan marks the fifth batch in Ardbeg’s series of 19-year-old single malts, bottled in small quantities at 46.2% ABV. Matured in a combination of Oloroso sherry butts and ex-bourbon barrels, this whisky showcases Ardbeg’s signature smoky profile, which, after years of aging, evolves to reveal remarkable tropical aromas. According to Ardbeg, the nose presents perfumed aromas of luscious tropical fruit, followed by notes of herbal incense and smoke.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 27, 2025

The Ardbeg distillery is one of the world’s most exceptional distillers, and we’re always excited to see these older age statements, but they’ve become so limited and expensive it’s very difficult to imagine opening these collectible bottles. Now the supplier is sitting on a release from 2 years ago—after somehow selling through the more current release at normal prices—and now we can finally sell the product at a price I’m willing to crack a bottle and enjoy!

Let’s have a go! The color is a gorgeous deep gold. HOLY heavens, this is real-deal old-school Ardbeg here. Huge notes of salty fish, dense wet peat, turpentine, diesel fumes, bitumen, bakhoor, sweetened mango, pina colada… it’s very big and tense. It loves air and continues to open for ages. The palate is exceptionally lifted and, while retaining the tarry smoke, hits hard with the salt spray and the lemon oils. Zingy and bright at first, and then pulled down by dark, deep, ashy intensity—white smoke, roasted bay leaf, guava, sweet coconut, and a dense nuttiness to remind us of the sherry component! This is exceptionally special whisky, and it doesn’t deserve to be discounted, really, but at this price it’s an astonishing old Islay that no lover of the ‘Beg should miss.

The Whisky Exchange “What is Pot Still whiskey?” – Irish Whiskey News

SINGLE POT STILL IRISH WHISKEY

Ireland is in the midst of a golden era for whiskey, and while you’ll find single malts, blends, ryes and more in all corners of the Emerald Isle, there’s one style that’s come to exemplify Irish whiskey above all others: single pot still.

Like single malt, single pot still whiskey refers to whiskey made at one distillery in a pot still. But unlike single malt, single pot still whiskey is made with a mixture of malted and unmalted barley (and often with other grains, too), resulting in a creamy texture and a fruity and spicy flavour profile.

                                                                                                                                                                   DISCOVER                SHOP NOW

There’s no style that captures the history, spirit and flavours of Irish distilling quite like single pot still. Those are just the basics, but the story of its rise, fall and modern renaissance is a must for those looking to expand their whisky knowledge.
