Port Dundas Distillery was established by Daniel McFarlane in 1811 in the Port Dundas area of Glasgow. The area developed rapidly into an industrial complex which included three distilleries all named Port Dundas. The first was established in 1811, the second in 1813 and the third operated for just a short period during the late 1830s. In 1845 both operating distilleries were producing grain spirit and in that year both installed Coffey stills. In 1877 they amalgamated and by 1885 Port Dundas Distillery had developed into the largest distillery in the world and was processing corn and barley and rye, and importing grain from America. In 1886 the distillery was operating with two malt kilns and five grain kilns, thirty-five washbacks, three Coffey stills and five pot stills. In 2010 port Dundas Distillery closed and demolition began shortly thereafter.

1976 Carsebridge 40 Year Old “Old Particular – K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)

$249.99

While most whisky fans think of Port Ellen and Brora when the DCL distillery closures of 1983 are recalled, the company that would eventually become Diageo shut down a number of other whisky facilities that fateful year, including the Lowland grain operation known as Carsebridge. Originally founded in 1798, the distillery functioned as a cooperage after it ceased distilling, but even that process was ended in 2011 when the Diageo barrel operation was moved over to Cambus. Thus, with each drop of Carsebridge that is poured each year, what little remains of the distillery’s stock is slowly extinguished from Scotland’s grain whisky history, making each bottle that exists just a bit more rare. This 40-year edition, distilled in 1976 and bottled for K&L in 2017, represents the holy trinity for Scotch whisky enthusiasts: the combination of price, age, and rarity that historically has sent our customers into a feeding frenzy. Rich and round on the palate with the decadence of four decades in wood, this lively and vanilla-laden Scotch almost comes across like an American Bourbon with its big oak spices and 54% cask-strength proof. Laden with honey on the finish, the bold proof brings home the flavor for a minute-long finish.

Whisky Stories – Your Turn

Our latest Whisky Story comes from Dan, who recounts a tragic tale of an icy lake and a bottle of Glenlivet. Please keep sending us your own Whisky Stories – we’ll be publishing more of our favourites over the coming months.

Over the past two years, I have been taking whisky for wanders around the coastal, mountainous and interesting locations that dot the land.

During a cold, crisp Sunday morning in February, we went for a wander around a local woodland littered with a series of lakes with a bottle of The Glenlivet 18 Year Old as the whisky of choice.

About halfway round the lake, there was a much smaller, almost pond-like expanse of water covered in ice. Having had experience with whisky shoots on ice, I thought this location would be apt for a photo.

A crack in the ice…

I removed The Glenlivet from the bag and gently placed it on the ice, much to the displeasure of my parents who cited structural issues. Then, as I removed my glove to retrieve my phone from my pocket, I suddenly heard an abrupt crack in the ice.

As I turned to face the bottle, the crack rose to a crescendo at which point the bottle became submerged and quickly disappeared into the freezing abyss.

Instinctively, I rolled up the sleeve of my fleece and attempted to retrieve the bottle from the floor of the lake to no avail. Minutes went by at which point I realised I would not risk my arm developing hypothermia in order to salvage the whisky.

The Reunion

After coming home from work two days later, I walked into the dining room and what was I met with? Yep, you guessed it…The Glenlivet 18 Year Old – battered and bruised, but drinkable!

What happened? As I was working at my local wine merchant, a plan was underfoot to recover the lost bottle. Orchestrated by my stepfather and trusting neighbour, the plan involved using an extendable net, rake and set of rather comfy waders.

An hour went by scouring the floor of the lake with both the rake and net, and it seemed that hope of finding it had run out. Then, at the bottom of a small ridge, there was a dink of metal on glass, and The Glenlivet was raised from the icy abyss to jubilation and relief from my stepfather and neighbour!

In hindsight, placing a heavy bottle of whisky on a paper-thin blanket of ice was one of the silliest and dim-witted ideas I have ever had. Since it was recovered, I have made a pact that a similar landscape will never host a bottle of whisky for photographic purposes!

A happy ending – wonderful! Thanks to Dan for sending his Whisky Story to us. If you have one, we’d love to hear from you.

Angels’ Nectar Whisky Caching returns for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival – Scotch Whisky News

Angels

After a successful launch last year, Angels’ Nectar Whisky Caching returns for the 19th Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

Similar to geo-caching, but with whisky, a trail of three Angels’ Nectar Whisky Caches will be hidden across Speyside during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Guests will be able to find the whisky filled caches via a series of clues after registering for the event via the Spirit of Speyside website. The first to find each Angels’ Nectar Whisky Cache will be rewarded with a 200ml bottle of Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, perfect for sharing.

Inspired by the Angels’ share, Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky from Grantown-on-Spey based Highfern Ltd, has been created from a selection of Speyside and Highland malts, and is bottled at natural colour, with a sweet nose of apple pie and a taste of heather honey and lemon.Whilst there is no charge to take part, whisky cachers are asked to leave a whisky miniature (or better) in place of the dram they find. Thus everyone who finds an Angels’ Nectar Whisky Cache will be a winner.

Geo-caching is a worldwide treasure-hunting phenomenon, which started in 2000 and has grown to encompass more than three million caches across 190 countries. The Angels’ Nectar version does not require GPS, but as the search for the caches will involve some light walking, outdoor clothing and footwear are recommended. The caches will also contain a logbook for participants to record their visit, and guests are asked to share their experience and tasting notes of the dram they find on social media.

Introducing the event, Robert Ransom, Angels’ Nectar founder said, ‘We hope Angels’ Nectar Whisky Caching will encourage festival goers to explore Speyside’s beautiful landscape and discover new drams. Whilst there is no need to have been geo-caching before, for the whisky loving geo-cacher, what could be better than a trail of Angel inspired whisky filled caches.’

Angels’ Nectar Whisky Caching is one of more than 500 events due to take place across Speyside as part of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which this year runs from the from the 3rd to the 7th of May. Angels’ Nectar will also be offering a chance to try their whiskies at Elephants in the Pantry, Grantown, on the 4th of May, Whisky Castle, Tomintoul, on the 5th of May, and Brodie Countryfare, Forres, on the 6th of May.
