Macallan “Estate” and Glengoyne 25 Year Old at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Macallan “Estate” Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

$249.99

Whisky Advocate

Distilled with a portion of barley grown on the distillery’s Easter Elchies estate. The nose detects quite intense sherry, plus black forest cake, then warm leather and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Full sherry notes on the palate, with new leather, marzipan, cherry liqueur, furniture polish, and dark chocolate. The finish yields bitter chocolate, licorice, nutmeg, and tingling wood spices. (GS, Fall 2019)

K&L Notes

The Macallan Estate is a tribute to the heritage and home of the Macallan, the Easter Elchies Estate. This special whisky, containing rare spirit distilled from estate-grown barley, delivers a spiritual tour of the property on which one of Scotland’s greatest brands was built. It balances fresh citrus notes of the estate barley with the traditional sherried richness of nicely aged Macallan, resulting in a complex single malt with an extraordinarily long finish.

Glengoyne 25 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

$299.99

90 points Whisky Advocate

The latest addition to Glengoyne’s permanent range is a 25 year old, matured in European oak sherry casks and presented in non-chill filtered format. Syrup-like on the nose, very sweet, with milk chocolate, ginger, Jaffa oranges, and sticky toffee pudding. Smooth and sweet on the palate, with overt sherry, sultanas, and gentle spice. The finish is medium to long, with a hint of oak, old leather, and lingering cloves. Bold, yet elegant. (GS, Fall 2014)

K&L Notes

Glengoyne is one of Scotland’s most underrated distilleries, and they have made a commitment to revamping their image into one of the highest-quality malts available. Distilled using no peat – the barley is dried with hot air. Matured entirely in traditional Oloroso sherry casks.

The Whisky Exchange “Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2020 – The Winners” – Whisky News

With its usual lack of fanfare (followed by a lot of internet-based raging), the latest edition of ‘The World’s Leading Whisky Guide’ has landed – Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2020.

It’s a big year for Jim. It’s 2020 and matching up (just in time), he has hit a milestone – breaking the 20,000 mark of total whiskies tasted since the first edition appeared in 2003. Whether you agree with his scores and favourites or not, you have to agree that he’s tried a lot of whisky.

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2020 – my favourite cover yet

Print copies of the Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2020 will be arriving imminently, but in the meantime, let’s get on to the thing that everyone wants to know: who are the big winners this year.

The Winners

Jim Murray’s 2020 World Whisky of the Year

1792 Full Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Second Finest Whisky in the World

William Larue Weller 125.7 Proof – 2018 Release

Third Finest Whisky in the World

Thomas H Handy Sazerac Rye 128.8 Proof – 2018 Release

Single Cask of the Year

Nantou Omar Cask Strength Bourbon Cask #11140804

Thoughts

Despite the expected presence of some of last year’s Buffalo Trace Antique Collection in the line-up, this is still an interesting selection.

1792 is far from the biggest name in American whiskey, but the last decade has seen the distillery that makes it – Barton – develop and become a much better-known player. The fact that it was bought by Sazerac – owners of Buffalo Trace – in 2009, giving them the backing they needed to grow, will no doubt set conspiracy theories running across the internet.

Much more interesting to me is the single cask of the year – a whisky from Taiwan’s second distillery, Nantou. While Kavalan has been paving the way around the world for whisky from Taiwan, the state-owned Nantou distillery has been quietly impressing whisky fans. Its whisky is hard to get, and it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change any time soon – Nantou is a small operation which can’t distil all year round due to the heat and humidity during spring and summer.

The Omar rangebourbon- and sherry-cask single malts – are well-balanced and tasty whiskies, but it’s the single casks where the distillery really shines. Hopefully, this nod from Jim will lead to more of them making their way to the UK.

The Winners 2020

The winners list is much more than just the top four. The bible covers whisky from across the world and Jim sometimes uncovers a hidden gem, as well as reaffirming his (and, in a lot of cases, our) favourites.

You can find all the winners we have in stock on our Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2019 page.

Brexit – whatever happens…there will always be whisky – Scotch Whisky News

The Society is a place for fun and light-hearted whisky chat where we leave politics at the door so forgive us while we turn serious for a moment and address the UK’s situation with regard to leaving the European Union.

Since the UK voted for Brexit in 2016, we have been following developments closely, although like everyone else we’d need a crystal ball to accurately predict what might happen after October 31.

Whatever transpires, we’re confident we have the measures in place to ensure the continued supply of our bottles to our members in Europe. However, we’re also aware that if Brexit does take place on 31 October we may face some delays in delivery.

With that in mind, we’ve pulled together some multi-bottle deals, exclusively for our EU members, which we hope will keep you stocked up in case our delivery times are slightly longer than normal.

Extremely Rare Glenfarclas 50 Year Old at the Inverurie Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Glenfarclas 50 Year Old Limited 2019 Release

Glenfarclas Highland Single Malt has released a much anticipated 50 Year Old, with only 146 bottles are available to the UK market.

Bottled at the natural cask strength of 40.6% ABV and natural colour, this Single Malt is a rare taste of history. Befitting of a whisky of such rarity, the Single Malt has been bottled in a crystal decanter created by Glencairn Crystal, hand decorated in copper with a heavy copper stopper. The decanter sits within a red mahogany piano-finished gift box, reflecting the autumnal hues of Speyside.

Tasting notes

Colour: Dark Amber

Nose: Fresh sweet sherry which is both youthful and complex at the same time. In the glass, it develops aromas of Scottish fudge and butterscotch.

Flavour: Lots of spice along with Oloroso soaked raisins and rich dark chocolate.

Finish: Perfect combination of sherry, spice and alcohol which results in an extremely long, beautiful finish. A wonderful example of Glenfarclas at 50 years old.
