Whisky of the Year – the winner…
It’s that time again – the announcement of our Whisky of the Year. And the winner is, drum-roll, please…
Congratulations to Benromach! We’re big fans of the distillery’s old-fashioned, lightly-smoky style and we’re really pleased that our judges agreed. It’s available from The Whisky Exchange website with a discount to celebrate its win – Benromach 15 Year Old.
Here are my tasting notes:
Nose: Chocolate, caramel and wood smoke lead to a hint of new-trainer-sole rubber and rich maltiness – Shreddies cereal and malt extract. The smokiness winds its way through the gaps, becoming wispy coal smoke trickling out of a stove filled with baking sultana-studded apples.
Palate: Rich, thick and rounded, with sultanas and raisins quickly overwhelmed by spicy peat smoke. The baked apples from the nose are revealed as the smoke blows away, sprinkled with spicy cinnamon and mint leaves. Chocolate-covered liquorice and Hob Nob biscuits appear, along with a touch of charcoal.
Finish: Singed fruit cake and sultana-heavy fruit loaf fade slowly away to leave tingling menthol, leafy mint and cocoa.
Comment: Peatier than expected, but with all smoke wrapped up in fruit and chocolate. Supremely well-balanced, with a long and leafy finish.
This year we changed the way we nominated and judged the whiskies, opening it up to you – the public. We asked you to nominate whiskies on our website for a month, and then took the top three from The Whisky Exchange’s panel and the top three public choices to create a six-whisky short-list. We then made them into blind tasting sets and sent them out around the world. Votes were cast online as well as at our yearly Whisky of the Year blind tasting, and I pulled them all together to choose the winner – Benromach 15 Year Old!
But now the big reveal – what the whiskies in our blind tasting set were:
Whisky A – Kavalan Single Malt (Runner-up)
Whisky B – Glenallachie 12 Year Old
Whisky C – Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask
Whisky D – Benromach 15 Year Old (Winner)
Whisky E – Port Askaig 8 Year Old
Whisky F – Lagavulin 16 Year Old
If you want to try your way through the short-list yourself, we now have non-mystery versions of the set available – Whisky of the Year tasting sets. The voting might be closed, but you can still see if you agree with our judges.
Sixteen sleeps ‘til Christmas! If you’re anything like us, you’ve still got some stockings to fill. Fear not, though – we can hear sleigh bells! Our Whisky Sleigh is back and, as per the annual tradition, is dropping a gift in every order that’s placed today.
That’s right: every order placed between 00:00 and 23:59 GMT on 9 December 2019 will receive a little token of appreciation for shopping with us this Christmas. A single present will be allocated to each order – a little gift of Christmas spirit, from our family to yours.
Gifts include £10 Gift Cards, Perfect Measure Glasses, and Perfect Measure whisky and spirit samples. Plus, six lucky customers will find a bottle of Jim Murray’s World Whisky Of The Year 2020 – 1792 Full Proof bourbon from Barton Distillery.

Just named Third Best Whiskey in the World for 2019 by Whiskey Advocate!
Four Roses Small Batch Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)
For the first time in almost a decade, Four Roses has added a new bourbon to their core lineup. This is a must for your holiday bar, while supplies last. Unless you’ve decided to rearrange your life and run an ongoing stakeout at your favorite retailer, finding Bourbon this good hasn’t been possible in quite a while.
Four Roses Small Batch Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) ($54.99)
93 points Whisky Advocate: “The limited-edition releases from Four Roses are always top-notch, but this bourbona permanently available addition to the lineupproves itself every bit the equal of its rarer brethren. Made with the distillerys F yeast strain, among others, it has a perfumed nose, with orange blossom, cedar chest, berries, spearmint, tobacco leaves, sassafras, licorice, and layers of earthy spice. The palate is consistent and deep, with flavors of cherry Coke, cough syrup, orange oil, leathery dark fruit, black pepper, chili flakes, and chocolate, shifting into a minty finish replete with pepper, cinnamon, dark chocolate, cooked berries, and roasted walnuts. Full, rich, and utterly satisfying.”
K&L Notes: The Small Batch Select is a 104 proof bottling that is made from the following recipes: OBSV, OBSK, OBSF, OESV, OESK, OESF. It’s a blend of 6 and 7 year old bourbons and is a worthy addition. It’s loaded with spiciness and a bit of sweet fruit on the nose and morphs into vanilla, cigar box, and stone fruits on the palate. It finishes long and clean with a touch of fresh mint lifting it and begging you to sip again.

Four Roses combined six of their popular mash bills to create a whiskey that is greater than the sum of the parts, as indicated by its Whiskey Advocate recognition as Third Best Whiskey in the World. Supremely sippable at 104 proof, but packing a punch of flavor nonetheless. A perfect combination of baking spice, creamy pear and apricot richness, rye spice and a touch of mint. At this price, it’s the perfect sipping/mixing/nosing bourbon to keep at the home bar, and it’s a permanent fixture at the distillery, so supply should be no problem on this one.

We’ve been quietly cranking through this incredible Four Roses offering since it launched earlier this year. It’s become a staple on the bar of nearly ever staff member in our Redwood City store and with good reason. Now with the major accolades bestowed upon it by Whiskey Advocate, I’m guessing it will be on nearly every whiskey lover’s bar by the end of the year. It is perfect holiday drinking. Loaded with insane amounts of cinnamon it would sit next to any dessert splendidly at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Cigar box and cherry fruit notes blend together in a hedonistic concoction worthy of any bourbon lovers adoration. The oak vanillins carry sweetness to every corner of your mouth. The finish hints at the fresh mint and other herbal notes found in Four Roses F yeast strain. It goes on and on and then keep on going thanks to the 104 proof which is absolutely the best decision Four Roses could have made for a blend of this caliber. Huzzah to Brent Elliot – Master Distiller since 2015 and the Master Mind behind this great new offering.
