Distillery Focus: Ardbeg at Hard To Find Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Located on the South East of Islay, Ardbeg has been producing powerful, complex, heavily peated whiskies since 1815. Once prized by blenders, the distillery is now known for its exceptional single malts. The whiskies are rich, powerful and oily, with masses of smoke and a characteristic sweetness. The combination of rich sooty/tarry smoke and a sweet, citric core, gives the whisky a unique balance of flavour. These pungent, intensely flavoured whiskies are not to everyone’s taste, but are admired by lovers of smoky whiskies everywhere. Ardbeg is, perhaps, the ultimate cult distillery!

Distillery Focus: Glencadam at Hard to Find Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

Glencadam Distillery was established in 1825 in the heart of the ancient town of Brechin, and is one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland. It has enjoyed a long and interesting history, having been closed during both World Wars and used to barrack soldiers. To this day you can still see the evidence of this at the distillery.

Throughout the years, the distillery itself has remained mostly unchanged, and retains all the original character and charm from when it was built in 1825. It has two unique stills, which produce a rare “East Highlands” style of whisky, which is very fruity and slightly spicy.

Milroys on lockdown – Whisky News

Reviewed between to Casks

Joylon and Angus are two of our most senior staff with a wealth of knowledge in all things whisky. They are the dynamic duo of Milroys, giving their success to communication,  being the first people they speak to in the morning and the last at night. They are partners in life and partners in whisky. Here are their reviews on this weeks £100 combination.

Joylon on Hakushu Distillers Reserve : The first time I tried this was with Angus at a Monday night tasting. We were debating whether Japanese whisky was as good, if not better than its Scottish counterpart. Completely forgetting our conclusion, but not the whisky, the Hakushu DR is gentle with hints of smoke, green apples and white flowers. On its own or with soda, recommended as you like it.

Angus on The Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old : A classic single malt. Conjuring the rugged Islay coastline on the nose, with hints of Parkin cake and rum soaked raisins. The palate unleashes that iconic sea salt, interlaced with those dried fruit, nutmeg and clove sherry cask notes. Can the finish of this malt end? Although a regular fixture on our shelves Jolyon and I first drank this together after a handsome meal of white cabbage and brown shrimp, followed by rarebit and then a plate of gorgeous madeleines. What dram could do the meal justice? Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old, the digestif of our times.

Hard To Find Whisky “Distillery Focus: The Dalmore” – Scotch Whisky News

The Dalmore single malt is one of the most popular and iconic of all Scotch whiskies. Founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, the distillery sits by the banks of the Cromarty Firth, deep in the Scottish Highlands. Dalmore’s heritage dates back to 1263, when King Alexander III was saved from a charging stag. The Mackenzie clan, whose descendants owned the distillery from 1687 until 1960, were granted the right to use the twelve pointed Royal stag emblem on their coat of arms. The iconic silver stag now adorns every bottle of The Dalmore single malt.

The distillery has been led by a succession of influential craftsmen, setting standards throughout its 181 year history. The current Master Distiller is Richard Paterson, a pioneer in his field and one of the industry’s great communicators and ambassadors. He has been the creative force behind The Dalmore for nearly five decades.

The Dalmore single malt is typically rich and robust with flavours of dried fruit, almond, toffee, citrus, and spice. Maturation often takes place in ex-Solera Sherry casks that have been soaked in Oloroso and PX Sherry for decades. Port pipes (sourced from Graham’s) and red wine barriques are also widely used alongside traditional ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks. Their range comprises traditional age statement whiskies, non-age statement specialities, and high end, small batch, luxury bottlings.

Hard To Find Whisky “Distillery Focus: Arran” – Scotch Whisky News

Known as “Scotland in miniature’ for its diverse environment and stunning scenery, The Isle of Arran has become one of Scotland’s most popular destinations for whisky enthusiasts. This remote island was once home to over 50 illicit distilleries that lay beyond the reach of the exciseman. The Island’s whisky industry was revived with the construction of the Arran Distillery (now being rebranded as The Lochranza Distillery) which officially opened in 1995.

Arran is one of Scotland’s last remaining independently owned distilleries, producing whisky that is typically unpeated, sweet, smooth and fruity. A diverse portfolio includes a wide range of cask finished whiskies, higher age statement bottlings, cask strength releases, and peated whisky bottled as Machrie Moor.

In 2019, Isle of Arran Distillers opened the Lagg Distillery which will focus on producing a heavily peated style of whisky, in contrast to the signature sweet, unpeated style produced at Lochranza.
