Leading sustainable Scotch tourism with four new Green Tourism awards – Scotch Whisky News

Leading sustainable Scotch tourism with four new Green Tourism awards

Four of our famous Scotch Whisky distilleries have been awarded the UK’s highest eco-tourism award in another milestone on the journey to a greener future.

Lagavulin, Blair Athol, Oban and Clynelish distilleries have all received the prestigious gold certification from Green Tourism for their sustainable practices, both in the brand home visitor experiences and the distillery operations.

They join sister distilleries Glenkinchie and Royal Lochnagar on the list of Diageo Scotch Whisky distilleries to receive the top Green Tourism accreditation. Only eight distilleries in total in Scotland have this accreditation, with Diageo now holding six.

Zero waste to landfill, biodiversity enhancement, energy efficiency, local sourcing, community engagement and plastic reduction were among the achievements praised by the assessors across the whisky attractions.

Oban Distillery has been key to helping raise the standards for sustainable practice across the drinks industry. The distillery switched to biofuels in 2018, reducing its carbon footprint by 98%, and last year introduced a new water reduction initiative, allowing the site to save approximately 80,000 litres of water a week.

The distillery is also working with the world’s leading Scotch Whisky, Johnnie Walker, to plant 189,000 trees in Ballygowan, across 85.5 hectares, to restore woodland and promote wildlife diversity in Argyll, as part of Johnnie Walker’s commitment to plant a million trees across Scotland by 2025.

On Islay, which is world-renowned for its smoky, peaty whiskies, Lagavulin has led the preservation of peatlands through a partnership with RSPB that is working to restore and conserve almost 700 acres of peat bog on the island.

Clynelish Distillery in Brora, which is currently undergoing a major transformation as part of our £185m investment in Scotch whisky tourism, was recognised for its efforts to encourage sustainable travel, with the installation of cycle racks and planned electric vehicle charging points.

Perthshire’s Blair Athol distillery was praised for its dedication to recycling across the business, including the recycling of its pot ale syrup for animal feed, which saves 850 tanker movements and 15,000 litres of water annually. Adding to its eco-friendly credentials, the distillery was also commended for using old pallets and discarded materials to create wildlife boxes to improve biodiversity for native birds and insects.

Our commitment to sustainability is part of our wider ten-year sustainability action plan to make a positive impact on the world by 2030, including a target of being net-zero from our operations by the end of the decade. We are also currently investing £185m in our Scotch whisky tourism experience which will see the opening of the state-of-the-art Johnnie Walker Princes Street whisky experience in Edinburgh this summer, investment into 12 of our Scotch brand homes and the revival of lost distilleries Port Ellen and Brora.

Elite Wine & Whisky explains the potential impact of the suspended US tariffs on Scotch whisky investments – Scotch Whisky News

Following on from the news that President Biden has decided to suspend the 25% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Scotch whisky, there is definitely a lot of optimism in the whisky market. According to the Scotch Whisky Association, the tariff attributed to a fall in exports to the US of 35%, amounting to over half a billion pounds in lost exports. Elite Wine & Whisky therefore expects that the lifting of this tariff will enhance Scottish trade with the US and demonstrate dramatic economic impacts. Although Elite Wine & Whisky does not expect a shift back to a consumption of Scotch whisky in the US to happen overnight, the removal of the tariff is expected to gradually enhance exports of the commodity once again, increasing the demand for Scotch whisky.

As discussed by the British International Trade Secretary Liz Truss, “the benefits will be felt across our nation, especially in Scotland, where Scotch whisky distillers will be able to sell at lower prices in the United States, their most valuable market. The easier it is for Americans to buy a bottle of Macallan, Talisker or Glenfiddich, the more money those producers will have to invest in their businesses, their staff and futures.”

But how will this temporary removal of the 25% tariff impact the global markets? In recent years the global landscape of investments has changed dramatically, with Elite Wine & Whisky noticing an increase in the willingness of the general public to take trading into their own hands and invest and trade in a range of commodities through online platforms and investment advisors. This year has demonstrated the global volatility of the stock markets and poor returns on extremely low interest rates, driving investors to discover ways to diversify their asset portfolios.

One such way to diversify is taking this opportunity to invest in a luxury commodity with great potential in the coming months following the aforementioned tariff reduction. Elite Wine & Whisky is currently trying to make the whisky market far more accessible to a range of investors, even those with no prior knowledge of whisky. But why should one invest in whisky over other luxury commodities? With exceptional returns in recent years (between 12-20%), a better question might be ‘why not whisky?’

As with any investment, it is extremely important to make sure you’re in the best hands. Elite Wine and Whisky is one of only a handful of companies globally that has been accepted into the prestigious London International Vintners Exchange, which is considered a great accolade in the industry.

Currently, Elite Wine & Whisky has around £20 million under its jurisdiction and they continue to work closely with the world’s finest wineries and distilleries. Their mission is to build and maintain a solid foothold in the marketplace that is sufficiently robust as to ensure their clients have autonomy when they wish to grow their portfolio.

It’s not very often that you get the opportunity to educate yourself in an investment. However, Elite Wine and Whisky believes in allowing their investors to embrace the sweet taste of success by inviting them to join one of their virtual whisky tastings. If lockdown has taught us anything, it is establishing the importance of expanding our knowledge, so there has no better time to develop your whisky knowledge by tasting a selection of whiskies from fantastic family run distilleries. Or if you’re merely just interested in making an investment, their portfolio specialists have got this covered too.

Smoke Wagon Small Batch Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) $49.99 View

Nevada H&C Distilling produces the Smoke Wagon line-up of whiskeys. The Small Batch Straight Bourbon was born of a brainstorming process to solve a particularly thorny problem they were having with bottling an aged, high-rye whiskey that met their profile preferences and standards. Because rye typically ages much faster than corn-based mash bills, the aged high-rye spirits often lost their spicy rye components after successive years and rackings. At the same time, the younger rye spirits exhibited all the bold and spicy components they were seeking, but the palate was often lacking in the sweet, rich texture that aging brings. The solution was to blend and bottle and combination of old and young ryes, thereby capitalizing on the desirable characteristics of each in the finished product. Bottled at 100 proof, the Smoke Wagon Small Batch carries all the depth, body, and richness of an aged spirit the with robust spice of rye and #4 char.

Michel Couvreur “Overaged” 12 Year Malt Whisky (750ml) $79.99 View

Belgian Michel Couvreur was an independent bottler of single-malt Scotch (and this apprentice Jean-Arnaud has carried on after studying under Michel for more than a decade). The cellars are located in Bouze-lès-Beaune in the heart of Burgundy, where Michel aged his single malts for years in sherry butts and then in demijohns or giant bottles kept in total darkness in the exceptionally well-protected underground galleries of Bouze-lès-Beaune. Vatted from 54 whiskies aged 12 to 27 years in oak casks, this malt has a rich amber color, a nose full of dried flowers, tobacco leaf, Jerez wine, and fat almond, plus a powerful, fruity, long finish. What a fantastic accompaniment to smoked salmon when served over ice. It is also perfect as a dinner digestive served at room temperature.

Heaven Hill Legacy Bundle (Heaven Hill 7 Year, Henry Mckenna 10 Year, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Rittenhouse Rye) Whiskey Collector Set (4x750ml) $139.99 View

Throw in a bottle of the excellent Rittenhouse BIB Rye for good measure and you’re set for the next few weeks at least. Dont forget that Henry McKenna was the winner of best in show at SF Spirits in 2019 and has been next to impossible to keep in stock or that Heaven Hill 7 year is the #4 on Whisky Advocates Top 20 Whiskies of 2019. Needless to say there are few better values on anyones shelf these days.

Heaven Hill Bottled In Bond (Heaven Hill 7 Year, Henry Mckenna 10 Year, Evan Williams, Rittenhouse Rye and Mellow Corn) Whisky Collector Set (5x750ml) (Elsewhere $212) $149.99 View

92 points Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark In 2018, Heaven Hill discontinued its 6 year old bottled in bond bourbon that was sold only in Kentucky, but now has roared back with this widely available 7 year old. While the bottled in bond designation isn’t necessarily a quality guarantee, this whiskey more than proves its merit. It’s explosive, bold, and buttery, with warm flavors of honey-roasted peanuts, caramel, chocolate, corn muffins, licorice, and cinnamon, all accented by notes of savory herbs, cloves, white pepper, tobacco, and an earthy undertone. Well-integrated big oak, sweetness, and spice combine to create grace, power, and length. This is pure bourbon bliss, at a very approachable price. *Number 4 in the 2019 Top 20* (DF, Winter 2019) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

*NB: Partial Returns not accepted, all 5 bottles required* The Bottled In Bond Act was passed on March 3rd, 1897. This is perhaps the most important piece of spirits related legislation in the history of the United States. Not only did it establish the most rigorous standard for any distilled spirit in the world, it was also a critical change to tax law that allowed us to have great and relatively inexpensive whiskey. To be bottled in bond a spirit must meet a number of requirements. Most importantly for today’s whiskey consumer, spirit that is BIB must be a minimum of 4 years of age. In addition it has to be distilled in a single distillation season (Jan-Jun or July-Dec) by a single distiller at one distillery. That single season whisky must then be aged in a bonded warehouse and ultimately bottled at exactly 100 proof. The label must identify where it was distilled and who bottled it. In the case of Heaven Hill, no one has a larger or better portfolio of Bottled In Bond whiskies. This item includes 5 full-sized bottles: Henry McKenna – winner of best in show at SF Spirits in 2019. This bottle alone averages about $85 bucks since this prestigious award was bestowed upon it. A bottle of Heaven Hill 7 year – #4 on Whisky Advocates Top 20 Whiskies of 2019 (elsewhere $70). This 5 pack is rounded out by 3 other extraordinary whiskies: Evan Williams BIB Bourbon, Rittenhouse BIB Rye, and Mellow Corn BIB Corn Whiskey. All stone cold classics and staples in any well stocked bar.

Caskshare Partners with Edinburgh’s Holyrood Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

Caskshare Partners with Edinburgh’s Holyrood Distillery

Whisky buying platform Caskshare is pleased to announce a new partnership with Edinburgh’s Holyrood Distillery. Four unique sherry casks have been added to the Caskshare roster, all of which are available to purchase by the bottle, giving whisky lovers unprecedented access to a diverse portfolio of cask whiskies.

Established in 2019, Holyrood is Edinburgh’s first single malt distillery in almost a century. The urban distillery is located in the heart of the city and is inspired by the surrounding environs, as well as the rich distilling and brewing heritage. The brand’s new limited edition MADE by EDINBURGH range, marries craft traditions with bold new approaches to flavour, combining local malts and yeast with unique sherry casks to create four distinct cask whiskies. The distillery aims to once again unlock the city’s whisky potential with its new range. By working closely with local farmers and deep-diving into the city’s lost brewing history, Holyrood’s innovative approach to whisky making explores the exciting flavours of speciality malts. The casks available on the Caskshare platform include an Oloroso CaskMoscatel CaskAmontillado Cask and a Pedro Ximenez Cask.

Founder of Caskshare, David Nicol created the Caskshare platform out of a desire to bring single cask whisky to a wider audience. Having already launched the successful whisky subscription service, Craft Whisky Club, David recognised within the online whisky community a growing interest in a whisky’s provenance and the journey from distillery to dram. His vision was to lower the barrier of entry into the world of cask ownership, and to help customers connect with their favourite distilleries from the get-go, whilst also allowing distilleries to engage with whisky fans in a real and tangible way with whisky straight from the cask.

Holyrood Casks are available to purchase here

Bottle prices start from £79
