American Bourbons at K&L California – American Whiskey News

Three Chord K&L Exclusive Barrel Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

$49.99

View

This new brand from musician Neal Giraldo offers a wide variety of blended bourbons and ryes. Named for the Three Cord progression at the root of the blues genre, the links between bourbon and blues go way back. The goal of Three Cord bourbon is offer unique expressions devoted to three main principles: “Truth, heart, and integrity.” We can’t think of anything more truthful than a cask strength single barrel of bourbon. This lovely cask was distilled at MGP in February 2017 and bottled at the end of 2021 at full cask strength without any chillfiltration or dilution of any kind. From the famous “high rye” recipe, it’s mashbill is 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. Expect dense powerful flavors and plenty of spice with surprising depth for the age. If every thing they strum at Three Cords sounds like this, we’ll be listening for many years to come.

K&L has had a great relationship with the team at Doc’s and the Exploratory Cask Series has long been a bourbon fan favorite. From the distillery: “The Exploratory Cask Series are super limited productions, often as little as one cask of whiskey, that we decided to do something fun with. These releases may be as simple as a whiskey we just thought was too good not to release as a single barrel on its own, or as complex as a whiskey finished in fortified wine, exotic liqueur or even an old pipe tobacco barrel! These releases allow us to really geek out on good whiskey and we hope you will geek out right along with us! These batches are extremely limited and released when they are ready to be, never before.”

Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge: Winners cross line and Diageo’s Charlotte Harris breaks World Record

Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge: Winners cross line and Diageo’s Charlotte Harris breaks World Record

On the 14th December 2021, 36 teams from around the world left the shores of La Gomera, Canary Islands to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua. Two British friends, including Diageo’s Charlotte Harris, have smashed a world record.

Every year, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge inspires people around the globe to leave their hectic lives on dry land behind to connect with nature, and row the Atlantic Ocean in the adventure of a lifetime. Talisker Whisky have sponsored the Atlantic Challenge for seven years and share the same love for adventure and the world’s oceans.

Made up of 36 teams and 107 rowers, including five-person, all-female and solo crews, the participants have spent months, even years, preparing for this epic adventure. Competitors will experience 40ft waves, changeable weather and living off powdered food in their incredible journey to the finish line.

This year, ‘Swiss Raw’ (Swiss), were the victorious winners and completed the challenge in 34 days, 23 hours and 42 minutes, a truly inspiring achievement.

Team ‘Swiss Raw’ were the victorious winners of this year’s challenge

Talisker will enjoy a double-celebration as two British women, including Charlotte Harris a Diageo employee, also broke the world record for the fastest female pair to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Charlotte Harris and Jessica Oliver (GB) who had never rowed before, battled 30ft waves, sleep deprivation, heat, blisters, sharks and a 360-degree capsize in bad weather to complete the challenge.

Their boat “Wild Waves” finished five days ahead of their nearest rivals in the pairs category when they arrived in Antigua on January 26th. They also wiped almost five days off the previous female pairs world record in a time of 45 days, seven hours and 25 minutes.

“I initially only entered the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge because I worked at Diageo alongside Ollie Palmer who entered in 2019, and I thought if he could do it then so could I! Luckily, I had a best friend who felt the same, but we never imagined we’d be able to do as well as we did. We put our all into every second of preparation and the challenge itself, and when we realised the world record was in sight it just made us work even harder. It has been the most incredible experience from start to finish, we’ve met the most amazing people and done things we would never have thought we’d be able to do. To spend so long out on the boat was a truly unique experience, and the One For The Sea cause shows how important it is that we protect the world’s Oceans. Coming into Antigua will stay with me for the rest of my life and I’m still not quite sure it all happened, but at least I have the pictures for proof!”

Charlotte HarrisGlobal Category Specialist, Media & Digital, Diageo

Three teams from the fleet, Anna Victorious (GB), Migaloo (NL) and Foar From Home (US), were rowing to raise awareness and funds for ‘One For The Sea’, an initiative launched by Talisker and Parley, an environmental organization, to help support the preservation of 100 million square metres of sea forest by 2023.

Talisker Whisky and Parley for the Oceans announced a new three-year partnership in 2020. To date, the collaboration has helped to conserve 40 million square metres of marine ecosystems.

The partnership forms part of Diageo’s wider commitments to “Society 2030: Spirit of Progress” our 10-year action plan to create a more sustainable world.

DISTILLERY NEWS

February is all about filling casks. For most of the month we have been filling into Refills, which happen to be our own.

These are the previous fresh casks we filled into and, since they were only used for about three and a half years, they still have a lot of life to give. We are confident in using them again; but obviously maturation in them takes a little longer. We have time to wait !

The new malt – or rather, malt from a new maltsters – is doing just fine. I cannot stress enough how important it is to us to use malt made from barley that was grown in fields that can be viewed from the distillery.

Last year, you may well remember, we did an Organic Malt run and this year we plan to use a different malt, with plenty of local regionality. This malt has probably not been used in Fife for many years, but is more than likely the strain the monks would have been sowing and growing in MCDXCIV.

Again, more to follow as we continue on our Journey to make the best Single Malt Scotch Whisky we can!

CASK NEWS

As always, we have some interesting casks coming up to be filled; and currently making its way to us around the Atlantic are Bodega Sherry Butts from Fernandez Gao, a Bodega that dates back to 1750 – not as old as ourselves, but with plenty pedigree and provenance. You will hear more about them next month.

LINDORES WORLWIDE

Over the last 12 months, our Export Manager Tim Foster and the Lindores Team, have been working hard to export Lindores spirit to as many parts of the world as we can. With Covid and Brexit complications this has certainly been a challenge, but we now have distributors in many parts of Europe, and just this week we received our first order from Whisky Galore in New Zealand. They have now taken the ‘furthest from Lindores’ title from Wonderland Drinks in Melbourne!

Canada has proven to be an increasingly large market for us and we are still pursuing distribution in the USA. Looking ahead to 2022-2023 we’ll be adding even more markets to our growing list. So, watch this space!

Kensington Wine Market Malt Messenger No. 135 by Andrew Ferguson – New Whiskies & New Tastings! – Whisky News

It is hard to believe that is has been nearly a month since the “Dodge Ram Drive-In”… Things have returned to a relative normal over the last few weeks. We’ve prettied up the temporary entrance a little and we have pulled the store back together, as much as we can.

Dealing with all this has been more than a little time-consuming, and as a result, this newsletter is about 3 weeks later than it should be. We have added some long-promised new tastings to the schedule, and I’ve included details on some of the new whiskies that have trickled into the shop over the last 4 weeks.

As always, in the event of a discrepancy in price, the point of sale at KWM will be taken as correct. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions, comments, or requests (but online ordering works too, in fact, it might be faster…).

Sincerely,

Andrew Ferguson

GlenDronach Port Wood is Back

This limited edition GlenDronach has been finished in carefully selected Port Pipes, and has been bottled at 46%.

Producer Description

“The GlenDronach Port Wood is inspired by the historical import of casked Port into Scotland during the 19th Century. During the 1800s, Port was ‘de rigueur’, and many of the finest Port pipes would travel from Portugal, down its Douro River, destined for the wine cellars of Scotland’s gentry.

“Whilst many years have since passed, Portugal’s majestic Douro Valley is still renowned for its exceptional Port. We have selected some of its finest Port pipes to enrich The GlenDronach for a second maturation period Our Master Blender has expertly combined the whisky from these Port pipes, to create a fruit filled expression, with layers of ripe berries rolling into its signature long, lingering finish.”

GlenDronach Port Wood – 46% – Finished in Port Casks – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Breathe in delightful waves of Victoria plum, bramble and strawberry jam with top notes of cherry blossom and honeysuckle on a base of sandalwood and ginger. Taste: Layers upon layers of rich fruits. Sip blackberry and roasted apple crumble with freshly baked gingerbread, developing into a baked orange and black cherry back note. Finish: Savour orange peel, sultana and cherry cake lingering into the richly fruity finish.” – $135

Not all of these bottles will only be offered to participants of the tasting, but for some of them, like the Laphroaig, GlenAllachie and Bunnahabhain 2008 that will be the case . In any case we will hold back a 6-12 bottles of each of the other whiskies just for participants in the tasting. The FOMO was so strong for this tasting, we had to double it, but don’t worry we got a bit more of the whiskies too. Friday April 1, 7 PM..

AEROLITE LYNDSAY ISLAY 10 YEAR OLD DESCRIPTION

For those with an eagle eye, you may have already spotted that Aerolite Lyndsay is an anagram for ‘ten year old Islay’ – see what they did there? This is a peated single malt from Character of Islay Whisky Company, distilled at an undisclosed distillery on Islay and matured for 10 years in a combination of bourbon barrels and Spanish oak sherry quarter casks.

HAMISH SAYS

Nose: plenty of maritime peat, interlaced with honey, caramel, and a kick of spice.

Palate: More smoke, like a bonfire on the beach, mixed with notes of dark chocolate, espresso and hibiscus.

Finish: the embers from the bonfire continue to burn in the palate with a delicious hint of toffee sweetness.
