1994 Bruichladdich 16 Year Old K&L Exclusive Hart Brothers Single Ardbeg Barrel at K&L California- Scotch Whisky News

kl_logo_trans1

1994 Bruichladdich 16 Year Old K&L Exclusive Hart Brothers Single Ardbeg Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky ($105.99) One of our good-natured business deals from Scotland ended up providing us with the chance to secure a single barrel of something quite special and unbelievably rare – an unpeated Islay whisky aged inside the cask of another peated Islay whisky! This 16 year old Bruichladdich spent its first 13 years in hogshead, lending it the standard vanilla and sweet grains the malt is known for. For the last 3 years however it sat soaking up the flavor from a barrel which had formerly held some super-smoky Ardbeg whisky. The residue left inside the wood was enough to turn a mild-mannered Bruichladdich into something smoky and aggressive. Very light in color, the nose is a combo of fresh malted barley and vegetal peat moss aromas. The palate is lean and mean with spicy pepper and wisps of smoke meandering in between the salty vanilla notes inherent in the malt itself. The finish is all peat smoke, but it’s an unfamiliar smoke – not peated Bruichladdich, but not Ardbeg either. As a fan of both distilleries, I find this marriage of the two styles exciting, delicious, and utterly fascinating. This will be a big hit with Islay fans and collectors everywhere. -David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer.

For Scotch Lovers Weekly Whisky Selection: Rosebank 21 YO 1990 Lowland Single Malt – Scotch Whisky News

781

Hello Fellow Scotch Lovers –

My guess is many of you are familiar with Citizen Kane, the 1941 film directed by and starring Orson Welles, that examines the life and legacy of newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane and the research of a newsreel reporter seeking to solve the mystery of the magnate’s dying word: “Rosebud.”

Any by now I’m confident that even more of you are familiar with Citizen Neck, the story of the relentless pursuits, shrewd business dealings and global triumphs of whisky magnet Nicky “The Neck”, who just yesterday was heard whispering the word “Rosebank” into his mobile phone from some far-away warehouse.

That’s right my friends…”Rosebank“….as in Rosebank 21 Year Old 1990 Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

For those of you unfamiliar with Rosebank, fear not, you’re not alone.

The Rosebank distillery was built in 1840 for James Rankine, a local merchant, on the waterside site of a former brewery near Falkirk in Scotland. It is one of the very few mainland distilleries that reached its markets by water (the Forth-Clyde Canal), and is highly regarded by Lowland malt enthusiasts. Tragically the Rosebank distillery was closed in 1993.

Fortunately for us, thanks to those relentless pursuits, shrewd business dealings and global triumphs of our man The Neck, I am thrilled to be able to offer you access to a bottle of Rosebank 21 Year Old 1990. The 53.8%ABV whisky is a triple distilled, natural cask strength whisky that was aged in refill American oak and refill European oak casks. This is a very rare bottling of some of the oldest stocks now held by the original distillers, with only 5,604 numbered bottles worldwide.

The price for a bottle of Rosebank 21YO 1990 is $289 We have an extremely limited supply and, as always, once it’s gone, its gone. So please, order your bottle now (limit 2-bottles per customer).

I hope you will take advantage of this exceptional opportunity to acquire this collectable rare whisky.

Until next Wednesday…keep those cards and letters coming!

ROSEBANK 21 YO 1990 LOWLAND SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

225

___________________________________________________

ROSEBANK 21 YO 1990 DISTILLERS TASTING NOTES

COLOR: Pale gold. Moderate beading, very clear.

NOSE: Mild nose-feel. The soft start is soon balanced by a crisp, juicy fruit sharpness (tropical fruits, orange and tangerine peel) and sweetness (fruit sweets). Below this the sweet fruit gives way to a more delicate earthy, even floral character: lily and English rose. Water makes the aromas softer; sweet lemon fondant replaces the earthiness. Late green apple fruit and floral notes; ripe peaches in a brown paper bag.

BODY: Light.

PALATE: At natural strength, tingling mouth-feel and good acidity; fresh, clean and drying. Mineral and tart (ripe plum skins) with faint menthol, then pleasingly charred with light pepper. Beautifully silky with a little water, when a very soft floral sweetness emerges (fruit salad and orange water) before the lemony acidity asserts itself.

FINISH: Short and drying, with just an appetising hint of bitterness. Later, some red grape fruit. Softer, more gentle and rounded with water. Finally, a little late cocoa dryness.

Douglas Laing Provenance Bottlings For November 2011 – Scotch Whisky News

provenance-range-300x197

This month we are delighted to introduce eight (8) new PROVENANCE bottlings (plus a new “4 Regions” PRV pack of 20 cls flasks).

Tasting Notes for PROVENANCE follow below:

PRV 0746 Mortlach 8 Year Old Sherry
On the nose there is initially a soft maceration of white fruits followed by a sweet mocha character. Mouth coatingly creamy on the palate- it then heads off to mixed spices and a malty sweetness. More chocolate than coffee is apparent on the long finish which also reveals late spices and aniseed. (F)

PRV 0733 Glen Grant 8 Year Old
Opens with an attractively sweet trait on the nose – soft meringue and icing sugar – then runs to a fruity (fresh apples) style. The palate is still sweet & fruity, now carrying vanilla and developing to an orange tang. The finish is long, sweetly spiced (cinnamon?) with more orange zest – now flamed.(J)

PRV 0725 Glengoyne 11 Year Old
The nose opens fresh & fruity, carrying a creamy sweet quality plus a poached pears style. The palate remains fruity running to a sweetly gristed, barley sugar character. The finish is medium long and carries a chocolate and orange zest tang. (J)

PRV 0729 Blair Athol 11 Year Old Sherry
Carries an alcoholic fruit salad plus liquorice and citrus on the nose … with a late hint of vanilla fudge. Palatewise it is round, full of toffee, interesting spices and a later dry gristiness. The finish carries even more – now warming – spices with sweet barley and late liquorice elements. (F)

PRV 0749 Auchentoshan 11 Year Old
Initially massively fruit toffee’d on the nose! – it then opens and warms to a soft barley sugar sweet style plus spices. Palatewise it is still sugar sweet – then moves to a subtle spiced gristiness. The early finish is dominated by barley sugar, spices – then tails drier. (F)

PRV 0732 Glen Moray 11 Year Old
Clean, light and floral fresh on the nose – it warms then to attractive sweet grist and barley. The palate is soft, sugary sweet and initially subtle – then it heads to barley sugar and cough drops – with the finish being long, spiced in a camphor style and lightly “burnt”. (F)

PRV 0738 Glencadam 12 Year Old
The fresh and floral nose carries a sweet, macerated sultana and gristy character. The palate opens spicy and runs to a herbal liqueur style with sweet accents and late camphor. The finish is long & spicy then runs drier with an attractive leather & oak quality. (J)
Yours sincerely

Holiday Outturn Offerings

Balmy evenings in hot tubs

Cask No. 35.55
Highlands, Speyside (Lossie)

Silence descended on the Panel as we discovered Demerara rum, buttermilk pancakes drenched in maple syrup, aged bourbon, mincemeat, figs, boozy prunes, woody spices, pink Calpol, paint (both spray and poster) and crumble topping. The taste didn’t disappoint as we were transported to balmy evenings in hot tubs under eucalyptus and rosemary munching on aged Balsamic covered figs and Parma ham drizzled in extra virgin olive oil. With water (we really didn’t want to add any) we found pomanders, peaches, spices, curry leaves, vine tomatoes, rum, bourbon, figs in Balsamic reduction; soft, juicy and voluptuous to taste. From Elgin’s only distillery.

Drinking tip: For following dusk around the globe

Spicy marmalade

Cask No. 7.68
Highlands, Speyside (Lossie)

Rich notes of leather, cinnamon & nutmeg dusted apple pie, banana bread, treacle tart, pecan pie, saddle soap, fresh apricot and crème brûlée; spicy tastes of light fruitcake, ginger biscuits, leather, Dundee marmalade and tea chests made for a fantastically well-integrated first impression. The addition of water (be careful, it doesn’t need much) with aromas of fresh pipe tobacco, well-used furniture, Seville oranges & black pepper, fresh leather, floral notes (gorse flowers, carnations) and school satchel, books and all. Now on the palate we found spicy marmalade, cinnamon sticks, orange curd, thyme with a wonderful woody aftertaste. Highly prized as a top dresser for blends.

Drinking tip: This deserves to be appreciated so take your time as; try with a cigar

Colour: Amber
Cask: Second-fill hogshead
Age: 21 years

Rum toffees and water wings

Cask No. 27.93
Campbeltown, Argyll

A classic, old-fashioned example of the iconic Campbeltown malt. After a sweet start featuring cheap rum toffees, we were plunged into a public outdoor swimming pool (chlorine and carbolic, with traces of rubber water wings) – fresh and somewhat tart scents. The taste at natural strength is sweet, maritime (complete with salt) and lightly smoky, with some ginger in the finish. Water continues the swimming images: wet swimming costume, rubber flip-flops – now joined by Chinese rice wine and charred driftwood, with the toffee note remaining. A smooth texture and a sweet and salty taste, with new plimsolls in the finish.

Drinking tip: In a communal shower with a rugby team

Colour: Vin gris
Cask: Refill barrel
Age: 11 years
Date distilled: March 2000
Alcohol: 51.5%

A league of its own

Cask No. 29.100
Islay, South Shore

Wet peat, raw oysters, almond oil, smoked mussels, crispy duck, heather smoke, hot diesel engine, earthy dunnage floors and a whiff of perfumed new make made a diverse first nose. Diesel, dirty like a burnt pan, white pepper, rock salt and grilled mackerel or sardines to taste; while water made it sweeter and perfumed. There were mentions of Brylcreem, cinder toffee, flake (Australian gummy shark) and one Panellist was ice fishing with Grumpy Old Men Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau. To taste this was ‘easy drinking’, smoky, salty, sweet, earthy; one Panellist had radicchio or red chard. Prince Charles’ favourite whisky.

Drinking tip: A brilliant Islay and a very interesting example of the make

Colour: Platinum gold
Cask: Refill hogshead
Age: 12 years
Date distilled: April 1998
Alcohol: 58.5%

$115

Sinister yet swoony

Cask No. 59.40
Highlands, Northern Highlands

Deep, rich, unctuous, heady: Armagnac soaked sultanas, fried Christmas cake, Crêpes Suzette, buttered malt loaf, sticky toffee pudding stuffed with dates, treacle buns and Fry’s orange cream had the Panel in raptures. Wonderful tastes of leather (Chesterfields and bound books), tobacco, treacle, Terry’s dark chocolate orange, waxy honeycomb, old polished wood all interwoven with a delicate trace of smoke. Fresher with water – yew topiary, marmalade on sultana scones, mandarins & cream, orange groves; to taste it was deliciously woody, with Dundee cake, Selkirk Bannock, marmalade and tobacco – one Panellist called it ‘sinister yet swoony’. This distillery draws its water from the Dairywell Spring.

Drinking tip: While on a murder mystery weekend in a country manor

Colour: Orange oil
Cask: Second-fill hogshead
Age: 27 years
Date distilled: November 1983
Alcohol: 55.0%

The Glengoyne ‘Teapot Dram’ – Scotch Whisky News

glengoyne

The Teapot Dram

Up until the early 1980s Glengoyne’s men were given three large drams of cask strength Glengoyne a day – breakfast, lunch and afternoon break.

Once a week the Brewer, Ron Low, and the excise men would select the best first fill sherry cask they could find to become that week’s dram. However, if the younger men didn’t want one of their drams they would pour it into the old copper teapot that sat in the rest room.

The more “seasoned” drinkers would then help themselves to additional drams from the teapot throughout the day – everyone was happy.

The Teapot Dram was created to encapsulate those days, and consists of five first fill sherry casks between the ages of nine and 11 years old. The Teapot Dram is bottled at cask strength and exclusive to Glengoyne Distillery.
