New Glenfarclas 105 Aged 20 Years – Scotch Whisky News

New Glenfarclas 105 Aged 20 Years

The limited edition Glenfarclas 105 Aged 20 Years has now been released and is making its way to specialist whisky retailers worldwide. Matured for 20 years and bottled at natural cask strength of 60% volume, only 4000 bottles of this remarkable whisky will be available.

This is the second time J. & G. Grant have released an older expression of Glenfarclas 105. The first was in 2008 when the limited edition 40 year old version was launched to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the first bottling of 105.

In 1968 when George S. Grant, 4th generation of the owning family, bottled a single cask straight from the warehouse, and sent the bottles to family and friends as Christmas gifts. By chance the strength of the cask George S. Grant selected was ‘105’ British Proof, and along with the name of the distillery, this was all the information he detailed on the hand written label. By the end of January the recipients of the gifts requested further bottles, hence Glenfarclas ‘105’, the first commercially available cask strength whisky of the modern age was born. The name refers to the strength in the British Proof system, equivalent to 60% alcohol by volume.

Commenting on this new limited edition from Glenfarclas, George S Grant, Director of Sales and 6th generation of the owning family said, ‘My family have been producing Glenfarclas 105 for 3 generations now and the 20 Year Old makes a great addition to the ‘105’ family, along with the 105 and 105 40 Years Old. This is a 105 as it should be – big and powerful with all the classic Glenfarclas flavours coming through. Definitely a dram to savour as the finish just goes on and on.’

Old Pulteney 40 Year Old Unveiled – Scotch Whisky News

Old Pulteney 40 Year Old unveiled

Old Pulteney is proud to unveil the oldest and most exclusive official expression of single  malt to leave the warehouses of the northernmost distillery on Scottish mainland since its establishment in 1826. The spirit of Pulteney is influenced by its environment like no other. Windswept and rugged Caithness Coast and the remote fishing port of Wick provide the background for one of the most intriguing whiskies in the world. This new stunning Old Pulteney was shaped by the land and the sea for over four decades and is the ultimate expression of the Maritime Malt.

The Spirit

Old Pulteney 40 Year Old came from four casks. They included three Spanish ex-sherry hogsheads and one American oak ex-bourbon barrel. The casks yielded 493 bottles of whisky at a natural strength of 51.3% ABV. This unique single malt has been bottled at cask strength, has not been chill-filtered or coloured. Despite the age the spirit shows remarkable freshness and intensity and boasts an unmistakable Pulteney character. Pulteney Distillery Manager, Malcolm Waring, explains:

“Old Pulteney begins its life as spirit already full of character. Then we mature it on site, here in Wick, we think its hugely important. With each passing year the whisky takes on a little bit of Caithness, the initial charisma is there but it develops more and more complexity. To see that so clearly in a whisky matured for over four decades is extraordinary; we are overwhelmed by the quality of this liquid and by how firmly it’s anchored here. The people, the process, the land and the sea are all in there.”

The commentators who sampled the spirit prior to bottling remarked:

A complex whisky which is surprisingly vibrant for its age.
– Joel Harrison, www.caskstrength.net

Just brilliant! So much going on, and incredibly youthful in terms of sweetness and pep. We loved it!
– Ben Ellefsen, Master of Malt

Epic inside and out

Old Pulteney 40 Year Old is not only an extraordinary whisky crafted to perfection but also an important chapter in the history of Pulteney Distillery. As such it calls for bespoke presentation; a real show of fierce pride, strength of the community and stunning craftsmanship.

The whisky is presented in unusual deep-blue bottles crafted by The Tudor Crystal Design company and its sister company Plowden and Thompson’s Undertaking. Hand blown from melting silica, soda ash and special additions each bottle is then finished with solid silver melted blown across the glass to form a wave pattern. This gives the familiar ‘Smuggler’s Kettle’ Old Pulteney bottle elegance and flair that pay respect to the liquid inside.

Each bottle of Old Pulteney 40 Year Old is topped with a stone closure whittled, polished, fine-pressure jetted, milled and polished again by the famous local Caithness Stone Industries. The bottles are finished with a Scottish hallmarked silver medallion stating the age of the whisky. The high-gloss lacquered wooden box that encases the bottle has the iconic Old Pulteney herring drifter silver-etched into it to complete the stunning presentation.

In addition every bottle of Old Pulteney 40 Year Old comes with a hand-signed book by whisky expert Charles MacLean.

A long journey

Old Pulteney 40 Year Old boasts one of the most beautiful bottles ever to be used for single malt whisky. This extraordinary feat of design and craftsmanship comes as a result of intense, painstaking work by many people in Caithness and beyond. Old Pulteney Senior Brand Manager, Margaret Mary Clarke explains that the 40 Year Old has been a labour of love for all at Pulteney Distillery:

“The release of this wonderful 40 Year Old is a fitting way to conclude 2012, which has been an exceptional year for Old Pulteney around the world. Malcolm Waring, Distillery Manager, and his team have shown real dedication in bottling a whisky of the highest calibre which embodies the finest elements of Old Pulteney with even deeper complexity and character in every bottle.”

Old Pulteney 40 Year Old will be available from specialist whisky retailers globally from 1st November 2012 at a RRP of £1490.

Notes

· Old Pulteney’s core range includes Old Pulteney 12 Year Old, Old Pulteney 17 Year Old and Old Pulteney 21 Year Old. Old Pulteney 30 Year Old is also available.

· Pulteney Distillery was established by James Henderson in 1826, at the peak of the local herring fishing boom

Douglas Laing ‘Provenance’ Bottlings for October 2012 – Scotch Whisky News

We have three (3) new PROVENANCE bottlings this month, whose Tasting Notes follow –

PROVENANCE Tasting Notes:

PRV 0936 Tobermory 6 Year Old Sherry
Opens sweetly on the nose carrying a spiced and muscovado sugar style. The palate remains sweet, now oaky plus a spiced tobacco character. The finish is long and warmingly spiced, then runs drier. (J)

PRV 0934 Auchentoshan 11 Year Old
Spiced initially on the nose – it then eases into a more citric and cut grass style with a soft malt mash and sweet baking tone. The palate is sugar sweet – distinctly barley’d – with toffee, vanilla and honey plus late cough drop character – all leading to a warmingly spiced finish with sugar candy, late cloves and pepper. (F)

PRV 0801 Glen Moray 12 Year Old
Attractively floral, spiced, gristy, honied, (and aromatic generally) on the nose. Palatewise there are more warming spices initially – developing as you hold it, to dark runny honey and barley flavours – all wonderfully intertwined on its warm finish (F)

We hope you will like and appreciate these new bottlings we have added to the PRV selection. We are at your service!

Best Wishes

Fred

Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America “October 2012 Outturn Offerings’ – Scotch Whisky News

October 2012 Outturn Offerings

Moorland after rain

Cask No. 26.84

Highlands, Northern Highlands

We immediately noted a lightly mentholated effect, then a complex of fruity and woody scents: artificial peach, fruit syrup, varnish, natural liquorice, stripped wood, sawdust, beeswax. The taste, unreduced, is sweet, herbal and fruity (‘lime pith’), with light waxiness and white-pepper spiciness. It takes a while to open up with water, then becomes very fragrant (patchouli and vanilla, meadowsweet and elderflower) and fruity (fruit salad chews, fresh pineapple, rhubarb), with a whiff of snuffed candle. The taste is sweet and waxy; the floral note is now jasmine, and the fruity element Juicy Fruit chewing gum and orange pith. The distillery stands adjacent to another of the same name, overlooking the North Sea.

Drinking tip: An early-evening dram in the Highlands, when the rain has ceased

Colour: Mid gold

Cask: Refill barrel

Age: 21 years

Date distilled: August 1990

Alcohol: 49.1%

$145

Laundry in the Bakery

Cask No. 5.35

Lowlands, Western Lowlands

Initial nose is fresh and light, elderflower cordial, green apples and lemon puffs. Deeper and sweeter notes develop quickly, giving homely and warm feeling, like baking bread or jam doughnuts. Quite hot and lively to taste, strawberries with black pepper, turning fruity and fizzy like strawberry Creamola foam, also creamy similar to a raspberry milk shake or Macchiato coffee. That creaminess carries on when adding water and aromas of apple toffee, rice pudding, butter icing, strawberry jam and doughy bread emerge. The taste is that of dark hot chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon and blackberry jam. And to finish, from this distillery known for distilling three times, cold peppermint tea and fresh slightly soapy laundry.

Drinking tip: Whilst baking bread and doing the laundry

Colour: Tarnished copper green

Cask: Second-fill hogshead

Age: 12 years

Date distilled: June 1999

Alcohol: 54.7%

Sweet, peaceful dreams

Cask No. 33.113

Islay, South Shore

You’re in a fabulous pavilion – soaking in a bubble-bath – sweetly peaceful. Nearby, a platter of exotic fruits (pineapple, papaya, lychees) and a dram of this. Across the room there’s a fire of fragrant pine cones. Outside, the eighteenth green of the world-class golf course that you have just completed way under par. The door opens and another serving girl appears with poppy seed biscuits, Italian fennel-flavoured salami and a beaming smile. You are tired but still feeling strong and proud of your achievements. Everything is in balance and harmony – the dream, the feeling, and the evocative scents and flavours from this ‘small headland’ dram.

Drinking tip: The perfect dram for unwinding after a hard day

Colour: American dry ginger ale

Cask: First-fill barrel

Age: 8 years

Date distilled: July 2003

Alcohol: 60.4%

$85

Burnt granary toast with bramble jelly

Cask No. 85.23

Highlands, Speyside (Lossie)

The first notes are typical of ex-sherry wood maturation: lightly sulphury, with struck matches, or as one put it ‘home-made egg mayo with granary bread’. The sulphur notes soon blow off, leaving yeasty, sour pumpernickel bread and baked pecan pie. At natural strength the taste is very sweet, burnt and aggressive. Water re-introduces the sulphur notes, which linger behind burnt toast spread with butter and bramble jelly or plum jam, and later treacle toffee. In the mouth, the texture is thick and smooth, the taste very sweet and slightly bitter, with raw brambles and redcurrants.

Drinking tip: Strolling in an autumnal orchard

Colour: Pale amber with khaki lights

Cask: Refill Sherry butt

Age: 12 years

Date distilled: September 1999

Alcohol: 59.4%

$105

Seaweed, sushi and Arbroath smokies

Cask No. 93.47

Campbeltown

The nose seemed unusual – salted almonds and rice crackers; seaweed, sushi, and Earl Grey tea; smoked sausage, tar, hospitals, garage workshops and farmyards. The unreduced palate was enormous – tar, smoke and ash – big time; also salty liquorice, menthol, Arbroath smokies and the seaweed found in Japanese rice crackers. Adding water brought the nuttiness and sweetness forward on the nose; we also identified flying saucers, soap and dried strawberries. The reduced palate was still interesting but more tamed – vanilla sweetness, tongue-tingling ginger and cured sausage with subtle caraway and mace flavourings. The distillery is owned by the Loch Lomond Distillery Company.

Drinking tip: A garden shed dram

Colour: Pale yellow gold

Cask: Refill barrel

Age: 9 years

Date distilled: April 2002

Alcohol: 59.7%

$90
