GlenDronach Releases Latest Batch Of Its Single Cask Bottlings – Scotch Whisky News

GlenDronach releases latest batch of its single cask bottlings

GLENDRONACH has today, 5 July, released Batch 8 of its renowned single cask bottlings.

Selected by Master Blender Billy Walker, this latest batch from the award-winning Aberdeenshire distillery was filled in May and all eight expressions are available as of today.

The eight, ranging from 42 to 10 years old, share GlenDronach’s typically luxurious, richly-sherried and fruity characteristics, with waves of delightful eucalyptus, plums, damsons, sweet chocolate, almonds…even toffee-drenched raisins and red chilli!

One of the eight is an aspiring youngster – the new kid on the block is a zesty 10 year old from cask 1988. On the nose, white pepper and cinnamon. On the palate, treacle-covered ripe autumn fruits, fresh mint and toasted nuts. An unusual but hugely appealing young Highland malt to savour while relaxing in a sun-lounger this year!

The cask details are:

1971 cask # 1246 / 42 years old / Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon / 44.6%vol

1990 cask # 2971 / 22 years old / Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon / 50.8%vol

TALISKER™ ‘WHIPS UP A STORM’ WITH NEW TRAVEL RETAIL OFFERING – Scotch Whisky News

Diageo, the maker of Talisker Single Malt Scotch Whisky, has today revealed a new expression of its world-famous scotch – Talisker Dark Storm, the smokiest whisky produced by the remote island distillery.

Matured in deep charred oak casks for extra spice and smoke, Talisker Dark Storm is a new Travel Retail exclusive, bottled at 45.8% ABV.

Speaking at the launch of the new variant Steve White, Diageo Marketing Director Global Travel and Middle East, said:

Talisker Dark Storm is an incredible new flavour-offering from one of the world’s best known and most loved Scotch Whiskies. “It’s a Single Malt that captures the untamed spirit of a full-blown storm at sea. It is intense and powerfully flavoured, a whisky that offers an element of ‘rugged luxury’ to today’s travellers – adventurers and whisky connoisseurs alike.”

Talisker Dark Storm_lores

Talisker Dark Storm is a powerful and intense flavour experience:

Colour: Deep amber.

Aroma:  On the nose, a salty and smoky edge, that evokes the sea-washed rocks of its homeland, combines with hints of aromatic spices and oak, developing into the sweetness of stewed applies.

Palate: Exceedingly smooth and sweet, with an intense, vibrant combination of fresh fruits, blackcurrants and liquorice slowly disappearing to allow a tempest of rich smoky aromatic spice flavours to come to the fore.

Finish: Warm, lingering and powerfully smoky.

Talisker Dark Storm is an intense new whisky experience,” commented White. “One that we believe will capture the imagination of consumers, drive purchase and deliver fantastic results for our customers.

“It is a whisky that is true to the Talisker house style but takes its trademark intensity to a whole new level – it is like a whole new ocean of flavour.”

The supremely rich flavours of Talisker Dark Storm are the result of careful cask selection – the heavily charred oak in which the whisky has matured ensuring an inimitable spiciness and distinctive smoky character.

Priced from £42.00 Talisker Dark Storm is available in 1L bottles in Travel Retail outlets across Asia, Europe and the Middle East from June 2013

Single Cask Single Malts from Chieftain’s in Stock Now at Mora’s Fine Wine & Spirits (E. Setauket, New York)

Chieftain’s is a collection of exceptional single malt Scotch Whiskies bottled for the connoisseur by Ian Macleod Distillers who, since 1936, have amassed unrivaled cask stocks from Scotland’s many distilleries.

Craigellachie 1991 21 Year Old (Chieftain’s) Cask Strength Single Malt 116.6 Proof – $196.99

4 bottles available

Craigellachie was built in 1891 by Peter Mackie, the man behind the blended Scotch whisky, White Horse. The distillery changed hands a few times until it became a part of the John Dewar & Sons family now owned by Bacardi. This 21yo (Hogshead) has a sweet, pretty nose of walnuts, barley and citrus with a palate that matches those scents with taste. Very soft and round, this is an exotic Scotch bursting with tangerines and nuts.

Glen Keith 1995 17 Year Old (Chieftain’s) Single Malt 92 Proof – $109.99

10 bottles available

Seagram’s built Glen Keith on the site of an old grain mill in 1957 to make a triple distilled whisky that would eventually go into Chivas Regal. They are best known for their mixture of grassy Speyside aromas and somewhat toffee sweetness. The distillery was mothballed in 2000 and just re-opened this year. The 17 year old Glen Keith aged in a single hogshead has a matured sweetness that borders on spice and herbs with flavors of ginger snaps, mint and flowers.

Caol Ila 1997 14 Year Old (Chieftain’s) St. Etienne Rum Finish 92 Proof – $99.99

15 bottles available

Protected within the sound of Islay, close to Port Askaig, the principal port of the island, Caol Ila is the largest and most modern distillery on Islay producing arguably the most elegant, refined and well balanced single malt on the island. Bananas, calamine, sea breeze, TCP on the nose lead to seabomb of salt, lemon soft peat and light spice on the palate. Medium sweet finish with lingering iodine and lemon peel.

Ben Nevis 1999 13 Year Old (Chieftain’s) Single Malt 92 Proof – $88.99

13 bottles available

Ben Nevis is the most northerly distillery on the west coast of Scotland and was founded in 1825. It’s had several closures during the 1970’s and 80’s, but is now owned by the Japanese company, Nikka. Since the mid-1990’s the core single malt has been the 10 year old, making this 13 year old Hogshead bottling very unique. A full-bodied, viscous Scotch, it’s loaded with ripe apples and oranges covered in baking spices dipped in chocolate.

Glenrothes 17 year Old Signatory Bottling Single Malt Scotch Whisky – D&M Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

Glenrothes 17 year Old Signatory Bottling Single Malt Scotch Whisky

This whisky has a strikingly rich amber color. The nose is rich with deep aromas of brown butter, white pepper, caramel, toffee, figs and notes of apricots. There is a suggestion of red fruits as well. Upon the first sip you have a full mouth coating texture followed by big flavors of butterscotch, apricots, and rich barrel flavors. There are notes of burnt sugar and oolong tea as well. There is some heat present from the higher alcohol however it remains drinkable. A splash of water does soften the whisky and bring out more fruit flavors, coco nibs, and dark roasted grains. The finish is very long and seamless with rich wood flavors and hints of roasted nuts.

Distilled: 6.5.1981  Bottled: 1.18.2013  Cask# 13/24 Sherry Butt

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America Early July 2013 Outturn – Scotch Whisky News

Early July 2013 Outturn Offerings

Elegant ladies taking tea

Cask No. 7.77                                    $155

Speyside, Lossie

The nose was attractive and evocative – lady’s perfume (talc, Yardley) soft leather, raincoats, mint, nettle, Plasticine and soap. In reduction, fruits emerged (banana loaf, apple pie, pear, berry compote, lollipops) with tea cakes, chocolate and perfumed cigarettes – imagine elegant ladies smoking after drinking tea. The palate was absolutely fabulous! Big fruit flavours (apple, raspberry, pomegranate) swirled around with perfume, leather, oak, coconut meringue and mint leaf to gain our resounding approval. With water – elegant and delightful – fruity perfumes, cookie jars, butterscotch, shoe shops and Woodbine fags on an oak mantel-shelf. The founder of Nikka had work experience here in 1919.

Drinking tip: A reflective dram – or one for the Calendar Girls to share

Colour: Runny honey                                                      Date distilled: February 1990

Cask: Refill barrel                                                               Alcohol: 54.8%

Age: 22 years                                               USA allocation: 120 bottles

Melo-dram-atic

Cask No. 9.66                                    $115

Speyside, Spey

The fragrant nose wafted Murray Mints, Blackpool rock, leather, apple, dark chocolate, gingerbread people with currant eyes and a man’s shaving cupboard. With water it became a fruity dessert served in an actor’s dressing room (sweat, hot light, dust, grease paint remover). The palate, however, was sweet and perfumed – with woody, spicy, men’s cologne (the actor now freshly shaven); finishing slightly nippy and drying with cold black tea tannins. The reduced palate had cherry lips and Juicy Fruit chewing gum; sweet, spicy, playful warmth (was that actor Kevin Spicy?) mingled with serious pleasure. Distillery founded by the Grants (not Cary).

Drinking tip: Pre-theatre, interval or back-stage

Colour: Light amber                                             Date distilled: April 1997

Cask: Refill hogshead                                                       Alcohol: 56.5%

Age: 14 years                                               USA allocation: 114 bottles

Pregnancy Tea Mix

Cask No. 29.124                               $145

Islay

To start honey glazed smoke ham with cloves, sugar butties, salted peanuts but also ‘Pregnancy Tea’ – a mix of dry raspberry, nettle and spearmint leaves. The taste is mineralic, pebbles on a beach or indeed licking a cockle shell; turning sweeter aromas of Orgeat Almond Syrup and Golden Grahams breakfast cereals appear. Adding water, first impressions are an astringency like lemon zest, herbal tarragon tea and then sweet like a Bakewell tart and dark red fruit pastilles. To taste, its again the balance of the mineralic, chalky flavours and the sweetness of a Cherry Jolly Ranger. This very unusual make, from this famous distillery “by the beautiful hollow by the broad bay”, is clean, sweet, fresh and salty.

Drinking tip: To wash the sand out of your mouth after a cold windy walk on the beach

Colour: Chlorine Blonde                         Date distilled: October 1991

Cask: Refill Sherry butt                                                      Alcohol: 56.9%

Age: 20 years                                               USA allocation: 120 bottles

Takes the biscuit

Cask No. 41.54                                  $85

Speyside, Spey

The initially reluctant aromas start as clean and fresh with apple boiled sweets, an artificial raisin and coconut then, muesli, old cut flowers, macaroons and milk chocolate. The taste was surprisingly sweet and long. A mix of rich tea biscuits, jammy Wagon Wheels, sweet tea and tropical fruits. With water the aromas remained rich. A selection box of biscuits, tropical fruit yoghurt and fruit salad syrup. The taste had a satisfying texture – biscuits, coconut and mixed fruit in Greek yoghurt with aromatic honey. In 1889 this was the first distillery to have a Charles Doig pagoda fitted.

Drinking tip: A dram for an indulgent afternoon

Colour: Sunlit gold                                                             Date distilled: May 2004

Cask: First-fill barrel                                                           Alcohol: 58.7%

Age: 8 years                                                USA allocation: 120 bottles

Attractive spirit in a cloak of oak

Cask No. G4.2                                   $190

Grain

The oak has a make or break impact on grain whisky – and we found abundant wood on the nose – dunnage warehouses and a French polisher’s workshop – plus corn cobs, tobacco leaf, Manuka honey, candy floss, vanilla, chocolate-coated marshmallows, pineapple and rum truffles. It became more buttery with water (marmalade on toast, buttered crumpets) with spun sugar, shoe polish and charcoal embers. The palate held our interest – bourbon-like sweetness (butterscotch, chocolate, peanut brittle, caramel, honey-glazed ham) with slightly bitter hints of cocoa powder, tobacco and leather and a pleasant oaky dryness insinuating resin and wood-sap. From the biggest distillery in Scotland.

Drinking tip: A good mood dram – perhaps to enjoy along with your favorite music CDs

Colour: Pirates’ gold in a cave                                       Date distilled: April 1984

Cask: Refill hogshead                                                       Alcohol: 55.4%

Age: 28 years                                               USA allocation: 54 bottles
