SCOTLAND’S NEWEST WHISKY START-UP LAUNCH FIRST-EVER BOTTLES – Scotch Whisky News

[Tailored Team; L: Tom Costello, M: Carl Johnstone R: Adam Harding | The Experimental Series; Photo Credit: Jacek Hubner]

Set to revolutionise the private whisky bottling world, Edinburgh’s Tailored Spirits Co. has launched their first-ever series of whiskies marking a milestone moment for Scotland’s latest team of ambitious, passionate and meticulous whisky professionals.

Single malt whisky-lovers are raising a glass as there’s an innovative new spirits start-up in town; Leith-based Tailored Spirits Co. today launch their first-ever whisky range under the brand name The Experimental Series. The whisky bottler’s inaugural release aims to ‘redefine tradition’, with a belief that single cask spirits are not just about heritage, but also ‘curiosity, exploration and innovation’.

The Experimental Series* are one-of-a-kind micro-batch experiments, limited-edition whiskies chosen to push the boundaries of what a single cask whisky can be. The series consists of a Croftengea Loch Lomond 7-year-old costing £59.50 producing only 52 bottles, a Fettercairn 13-year-old release of 84 bottles priced at £74.50, and an Ardmore 8-year-old limited to just 60 bottles priced at £64.50 each – all available on the company’s website: https://www.tailoredspirits.co.uk/shop

The meticulous design style is inspired by travel luggage labels, provoking memories of places whisky-lovers have visited, with the bottle shape being a nod to those found in a scientific lab. A removable tab or ‘lab ticket’ containing a four-letter-code in alphabetical order per release, offers a collectors item for spirits enthusiasts to track each experiment. The company has announced that customers who collect six of the The Experimental Series lab tickets will gain exclusive access to a very special upcoming experimental release.

Tailored Spirits Co. is a groundbreaking new start-up that specialises in privately owned whisky casks. The company has been tipped by business leaders to transform the way owners of single cask whisky understand and realise the value of their rare spirits. After launching in 2024, Tailored Spirits Co. immediately gained recognition and momentum by winning the top spot at the coveted Scottish Edge nation-wide entrepreneurial competition, landing the business with funding of £100k.

The line-up of Founders are a trio of industry professionals who all bring their own unique expertise to the table; Tom Costello covers all things Brand & Creative, with Carl Johnstone managing Commercial & Operations and Adam Harding leading the Spirits, Sales & Strategy. The highly-experienced team stand by one clear mantra ‘From the warehouse to your house’ with one very clear vision – ‘to bridge the gap between the commercial scale of whisky and the needs of a single cask owner’.

Commenting on their first-ever whisky launch, Adam Harding, Co-Founder & Director, said: “We are beyond delighted to release our first-ever whisky range. This release is all about redefining tradition, honouring heritage but championing curiosity, exploration and innovation. Since launching Tailored Spirits Co. in 2023, we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from the whisky industry. It is such a warm & welcoming environment and we are so excited to release our first spirits into the whisky world.”

Adding his thoughts on the meticulous bottle design, Tom Costello, Co-Founder & Director, said: “We love making whiskies look as attractive and eye-catching as possible. The Experimental Series was a dream to design. It showcases the beauty of experimentation, something that’s not bound by tradition, a true exploration of flavour and design. For me the fact they can never be replicated made our first release really special.”

Carl Johnstone, Co-Founder & Director, gave his vision for the future of the company: “As a business, our story is one of continued growth and development. We have an awareness of a growing demand in a rapidly changing industry. This allows us to work closely with private clients all over the world. Our business started with a dram, and that’s exactly where our clients’ dreams and passions begin. Our role is to make the journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible.”

Tailored Spirits Co. are experts in spirits, specialising in whisky supply, creating exceptional brands and bottlings. An Edinburgh-based, global-serving company who guide clients through the complexities of spirits bottling projects and ensure their dreams are achieved.

OLD PERTH WHISKY UNVEILS LIMITED EDITION ‘OLD PERTH 2009’

Release Date: 13th February

RRP: £98

Available in: UK, Europe, Japan, Australia

Old Perth is proud to announce the release of an exceptional Limited Edition – Old Perth Vintage Collection 2009, a rich and bold whisky that showcases the complexity and depth achieved through a unique selection of three carefully chosen sherry casks. Only 1480 bottles have been produced, making this an exclusive release that whisky enthusiasts won’t want to miss.

The Casks: A Sherry Lover’s Dream

This limited-edition expression features a captivating combination of three distinct sherry casks: First Fill Oloroso Sherry Cask, Second Fill Oloroso Sherry Cask  & First Fill PX Sherry Cask. The rich, deep flavours imparted by these casks have resulted in a whisky that is bold, complex, and layered with indulgent notes of dried fruit, spice, and a touch of nutty richness. The casks themselves are of the finest quality, with the Oloroso hogsheads sourced directly from Miguel in Jerez, Spain, and the ex-Vasyma second fill butt crafted from European oak.

  • Colour: Deep mahogany. Dark and inviting.
  • Nose: A beautifully aromatic nose of sandalwood and dried tobacco leaves, complemented by sun-dried fruits, raisins, and sultanas.
  • Palate: The first sip is packed with dried fruits, raisins, sultanas, and a hint of candied orange rind. Rich brown sugar mingles with warming spices—cinnamon, root ginger, and cloves—to create a truly indulgent experience.
  • Finish: The rich nuttiness takes center stage as the dried fruits and spice gradually fade. A long-lasting presence remains on the palate, with a delicate waxiness lingering in the background.

Tasting Profile:
This whisky is rich, spicy, and bold, with layers of dried fruit, sugar, and spice blending harmoniously to create a whisky that is simply irresistible. It’s a celebration of sugar and spice, and all things nice.

What Makes This Whisky Special?

The creation of this limited-edition blended malt was a result of extensive sampling from a range of 2009 vintage casks, carefully sourced from multiple distilleries. The whisky is a vatting of different cask sizes, including hogshead and butts, both of which contributed to its complexity and richness. Each cask was nosed and tasted individually, with only the most standout samples being shortlisted for blending. After iterative blending, nosing, and tasting, a final blend was created and refined over time. A panel of whisky experts democratically selected the final expression, ensuring it met Old Perth’s exacting standards.

A Limited Release

With just 1482 bottles available globally, this is a rare opportunity for whisky enthusiasts to experience a truly remarkable expression. The whisky will be available in select markets including the UK, Europe, Japan, and Australia, at an RRP of £98 per bottle.

Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers is solely owned and operated by one of Scotland’s oldest and most prominent whisky families, Jamie and Brian Morrison. There has been over five generations of the Morrison family involved in the whisky business including grocers, brokers, blenders, bottlers and distillers, making them one of Scotland’s oldest whisky families.

Their heritage gives them access to a wide variety of unique and exceptional casks from pedigree distilleries across Scotland. Their family’s values are run through everything they do and they proudly showcase these underneath each of their bottles reiterating their commitment to Patience, Intuition and Integrity.

In every whisky they release, they are committed to continue to impart the knowledge that has been passed down from generations of family whisky makers. Our chairman’s great-grandfather, William Walker, one of the pre-eminent whisky brokers of his era, worked closely with various distilleries on the island, even advocating on behalf of the Islay whisky trade to American businesses on the repeal of US prohibition in 1933.

Walker grew very fond of Islay, where he eventually purchased a home, and played an integral part in developing transport, trade and marketing of the Island’s produce.  His philanthropic nature was deeply appreciated by Islay residents – with the Glasgow Islay Association (of which he was a life member and chairman) noting in 1934 “In the Island itself, he has closely identified himself with every cause worthy of support”.

In 1963 a chance lunchtime encounter at a Glasgow restaurant led to Stanley P Morrison, the son-in-law of William Walker, purchasing of Islay’s oldest distillery — Bowmore (established in 1779) — that evening. Morrison Bowmore Distillers was created and emerged as a globally-recognised brand of quality Single Malt Scotch

Whisky, producing a characterful spirit with some legendary bottlings. Morrison Bowmore Distillers was acquired by Suntory in 1994.

Russell’s Reserve “K&L Exclusive – Cedar Brook” (Warehouse TY-K, Level 5) Single Barrel #24-0078 ~ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey News

Russell’s Reserve “K&L Exclusive – Cedar Brook” (Warehouse TY-K, Level 5) Single Barrel #24-0078 Kentucky Straight Bourbon (750ml)

$74.99

View

This gorgeous barrel of 8-year-old Russell’s Reserve was distilled on September 14th, 2015, and bottled just before its 9th birthday in 2024. Aged on the fifth floor in Tyrone’s excellent warehouse K, the higher elevation and different warehouse strongly contrasts the other “younger” barrel from this series. These four barrels, we affectionately refer to as the Water Ways series, highlight the many small streams and rivers that meander around the distillery and ultimate flow into the neighboring Kentucky River. Cedar Brook is a particularly relevant name for the area, as it was once the name of a local distillery that operated outside of Lawrenceburg. Now the only distiller in the area is the wonderful Wild Turkey and this doozy of a barrel is no exception. It’s always striking to appreciate just how good these barrels can be at only 8 years of age, but we always forget that the flag ship product, which was quite well regarded in its day, was the old Wild Turkey 8 year 101 proof. Now we expect our bourbon to be older, yet 8 years seems often to be the sweet spot. Here we have the perfect balance between dense red Turkey fruit and earthy herbal barrel spice. A sweet and savory one that will scratch the itch of so many Turkey lovers without a doubt.

Mac-Talla Unveils Limited Edition Virgin Oak Whisky: A Sweet, Peated Masterpiece.

Mac-Talla Unveils Limited Edition Virgin Oak Whisky: A Sweet, Peated Masterpiece.

Launch Date: 13th February 2025

RRP: £74

Available in: UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, Israel

Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers is proud to announce the release of Mac-Talla Virgin Oak, a captivating, limited edition whisky that brings together the best of Islay’s peated heritage and the sweetness of virgin oak maturation. Set to launch on 13th February 2025, this distinctive whisky will be available in select markets including the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, and Israel.

Crafted with passion and precision, Mac-Talla Virgin Oak is a no-age-statement expression that offers a uniquely sweet and smoky whisky experience. Fully matured in a combination of bourbon barrels and #4 char virgin American oak casks from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky, this whisky represents a harmonious marriage of two distinct cask types, which has been further enriched by a final period of maturation in Virgin Oak barrels. The result is a whisky that is unlike any other in the Mac-Talla range.

What Makes Mac-Talla Virgin Oak Special?

Virgin oak, while becoming increasingly popular in the Scotch whisky industry, has never been featured in a core range Mac-Talla product—until now. This limited edition expression provides a richer, sweeter experience compared to the core range releases, Mara and Terra. The influence of virgin oak works wonders to balance the peat, softening its intensity while allowing the whisky to reveal layers of complex, indulgent flavors.

The result is a whisky that is both peaty and sweet. Initially, it starts with the delicate, floral character of an Islay spirit, which is gradually transformed by the virgin oak into a beautifully balanced profile. The peat is softened to reveal warm notes of toffee, sticky toffee pudding, muscovado sugar, and subtle spices, creating a whisky that is indulgent and deeply satisfying.

Cask Details and Whisky Creation Process

Mac-Talla Virgin Oak has been matured in 27 American Standard barrels sourced from the renowned Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky. The casks impart a deep richness to the whisky, marrying perfectly with the peated spirit. After maturing, the whisky was vatted, married, and bottled at Aberargie Distillery, where every step of the process is carefully monitored to ensure the highest quality.

Tasting Notes:

  • Colour: Golden Barley
  • Nose: Deep oak spice, toffee apples, and muscovado sugar
  • Taste: Rich smoked oak, warm baking spices, sticky toffee pudding, and creamy butterscotch

A Journey of Taste

Mac-Talla Virgin Oak stands as a testament to Morrison Scotch Whisky distillers dedication to creating exceptional whisky with a focus on craftsmanship and innovation. By offering a whisky with a sweeter, richer profile, this limited edition expression is the perfect addition to the journey of taste that Mac-Talla represents. It offers whisky lovers a chance to experience something new, a departure from the more traditional peated expressions, all while maintaining the distinct Islay character that defines Mac-Talla.

Availability & Pricing

The Mac-Talla Virgin Oak Limited Edition whisky will be available for purchase from 13th February 2025 at an RRP of £74. With only a limited number of casks produced, this whisky is expected to be highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs alike.
