  • Kavalan King Car Conductor Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($109.99)
After so much time spent merely reading about the great single malt whiskies from Taiwan’s Kavalan distillery, we can finally get our hands on them here in the states! The first release from Kavalan back in 2008 was their classic King Car Conductor expression that uses ex-sherry, ex-Bourbon, and ex-wine casks of between four and four and a half years of age for the marriage. It’s this whisky that I suggest those who are looking to try out one selection from the Kavalan portfolio begin with. The first thing that strikes you as you taste it is how un-youthful it is. It might as well be a 12 year old malt from the Scottish Highlands, but with an incredible supple-fruited character. It tastes like well-made, mature, Scottish single malt with extra concentration. It’s new and exciting, yet familiar and easy-to-place. There’s a soft, supple, raisined fruit and sweet sherry flavor right on the entry and a long, rich finish that continues to bring tof fee and caramel for minutes. It’s the humid conditions of Kavalan’s warehouse that allows the maturation to take place much faster — and while I’m normally skeptical of such accusations, the proof is in the pudding here. This is real deal whisky from the next big thing. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)
  • 1996 Arran 17 Year Old K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($109.99)
While peat ruled the day in 2009, the current whisky craze is all about sherry — that special wine from Spain whose barrels are used to mature numerous Scottish single malts. Macallan is known for its Oloroso sherry influence, and we’ve had a number of Glendronach casks aged in Pedro Ximenez. That rich, unctuous character is what whisky fans are after right now, which has lead to an increase in pricing on these expressions. While we continue to supply the household names, we’re also keeping a watchful eye on the independents like Arran distillery — an island producer with a penchant for using sherry maturation in some of their higher marks. We recently found a lovely little hogshead recoopered from fresh sherry wood that had spent 17 years in the Arran cellar. At 56.1%, the aromas drift right out of the bottle into a bouquet of raisined fruit and buttery toffee. The palate is surprisingly dry, however, with all the nuances of European oak making the ir way through layers of almond and sandlewood. There’s a bit of earthy rancio on the finish, as more fresh sherry flavor beings to saturate the dry, woody aftertaste. Water really brings out the fruit and opens up a bit of the sweetness. Similarly mature whiskies from Glendronach and Macallan sell for $150 to $200, so at $109.99 we’re pretty happy with the result; especially at cask strength. This one isn’t nearly as sweet as the some of the other sherry bombs we’ve had, and that’s quite nice for a change. (David Driscoll)
  • 2002 Bowmore 12 Year Old Signatory K&L Exclusive Single Refill Sherry Hogshead Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($74.99)
Bowmore is ALWAYS such a sleeper for us. Each year, we find a cask or two of Bowmore that we absolutely fall in love with. There are so many reasons why Bowmore is special, it’s hard to pinpoint why exactly we love it so much. Is it because they are malting more than 25% of the barley on site? Or perhaps it’s the fact that the distillery’s main warehouse sits below sea level. Maybe it’s the incredible resources and expertise that the distillery has or the peculiarity of the stills. Either way, we are absolutely entranced by most millennial Bowmore. This 2002 was so taught and powerful at full strength that we decided to experiment with bottling at lower proof. When we added water the whisky turned around and smacked us right in the face! What started as a sharp spear of smoky and peat seamed more like a catapult with a flaming ordinance. Not as bracing or angular, the lower proof actually broadens the whisky considerably. It’s smoked seawa ter, strange spices, and wisps of wild dried fruits. Bowmore deserves to be expensive, but this whisky delivers far beyond its price point. Inevitably it will go unnoticed, until you know, someone notices and buys it all. It’s always the same with Bowmore, so get a head of it. (David Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer)
  • 1992 Bruichladdich 21/22 Year Old Signatory K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($139.99)
Now that Bruichladdich has been purchased by Remy and the older stocks have become harder to find, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bottle a 20+ year old hogshead of the unpeated Islay distillery — especially for a price this hot! At 53% cask strength the malt is bold enough to offer a bit of a kick, yet reduced enough to allow the more delicate side of the whisky to shine. The salty, supple notes are apparent right on the initial sip, bringing back memories of Bruichladdich’s “Waves” expression, albeit with much more complexity and age. The stonefruits are soft and enticing, with more saline, maritime notes undulated under “waves” of richness and oily textures. If you were ever a fan of Bruichladdich from the old Susan Purnell days here at K&L, then this whisky is like a nostalgic ride down memory lane. This is the flavor that many a K&L customer cut their teeth upon, and at the price we’re selling it for, it’s not all that much more than it cost back then. For all the whiskies we taste in Scotland each year, this is the flavor profile I’ve found most difficult to duplicate — mature Island whisky without smoke. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)
  • 1983 Caol Ila 30 Year Old Signatory K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($259.99)
We just can’t stay away from these old Caol Ilas. Maybe it’s because they’re the last old Islays available, but we keep coming across these casks of Caol Ila that are just on fire. Caol Ila (arguably the most unsung Islay distillery) was spared closure in 1983, while its sister distillery Port Ellen was not so lucky. Caol Ila reliably churned out whisky throughout the 80’s whisky slump to provide a smoky base to the big name blends. While collectors the world over search for the final few bottles of Port Ellen left out there, few realize that if they just expanded their horizons slightly, they’ll find equally wonderful old Islay whisky is still available and I might even call it affordable. This spectacular cask from the Signatory warehouses is strickingly different from the 32 year we released last year. Here, we have much less focus on the exotic wood, earth and funk and much more classic Islay in every sense. We can go down the list and describe the expected and clearly evident flavores, smoke, ash, brine, lemon peel, oyster shell, nuts, it’s all there. It takes a slightly herbal turn on the finish with powerful core, but remains above all other things balanced. Of course, that doesn’t tell you anything about how special this whisky actually is. All I can say is that Caol Ila is one of our favorite distilleries and this malt is exactly why.
  • 1998 Laphroaig 15 Year Old Signatory K&L Exclusive Single Refill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($159.99)
Des McCagherty is a man of few words, but when he said to us, “You might want to load up on Laphroaig this year,” we listened. Apparently, this is one of the most difficult and costly distillates to purchase on the independent market and stocks are depleting faster than ever from Signatory’s Pitlochry warehouse. A yearly barrel of two of Laphroaig at K&L has become commonplace since we started our barrel program and we don’t want that to change — at least not while we can help it. That’s why we snagged this 16 year old sherry butt of peaty goodness, full of big smoke, cinnamon, tar, and brine, but rounded out by a rich, sherry-laden note that fans of Laphroaig’s PX edition will recognize. That combination of sweet and peat is one of the most popular flavor profiles on the market right now, which always adds a few dollars to the cost. In this case, it’s fully worth it. The sherry adds the perfect raisiny balance to the bold, ashy flavors of the 61% spirit. If you’ve already loaded your cabinet with numerous, collectable bottles from Islay’s iconic distillery, then I won’t say that this bottle will offer anything new to your selection. However, if you’ve been taking mature, full proof, relatively-affordable, single barrel expressions of Laphroaig for granted, you might want to start thinking about snagging a few of these. That’s what we did, at least. (David Driscoll, Spirits Buyer)

The Vault – Rare or Discontinued Whiskies At Wm. Cadenhead’s – Scotch Whisky News

INTRODUCING THE VAULT

The vault is a select range of whiskies that have become very rare or discontinued from both our own ranges and commercial stocks, with as few as 1-2 bottles available for some whiskies once they have gone then they have truly gone!

We will be adding some exclusive releases to the site over the coming months. Kicking the 2014 selection off is the Clynelish 24 year old single cask, next month we have a Miltonduff reaching its 20th year in the cask we will be bottling it towards the middle or latter part of the month, the new labels will be White and Burgundy with exclusive to London printed on the side of the Label.

Longrow 18 is changing this year, gone is the old Purple box and buff label for the much cleaner white label and open fronted box, this will of course lead to a run on the old Purple box ranges so get in quickly before they all go to the collectors.

The new Longrow 18 is a much more scarce beast this year with only a few cases, given it’s the first of the new design we expect demand to be high for this product when it arrives this week.

May Outturn Offerings

Cask No. 72.34                               $235

Tropical Punch Pop Rocks

Speyside, Lossie

The Panel was greeted by a mixture of chocolaty and nutty aromas like whole Brazil nuts covered in milk chocolate. There are also freshly crushed walnuts and split conkers next to the warm spiciness of a Jamaican Ginger cake. With time fresh mint leaves appear and overall there is the smell of a ‘special occasion perfume’ in the air. The taste neat with plenty of green, floral and woody aromas – entering a tropical green house. At the same time there is a firm and fresh green grape acidity besides crystallized sugar swizzle sticks. With water like a fresh fruit salad, grapes, melon, mango and green apples sprinkled with Demerara sugar. The taste juicy and fruity, Haribo Tropifrutti, as well as golden syrup on toast and a sweet oakiness in the finish.

Drinking tip: Gets you in the party mood

Sooty and Sweet

Islay

The first impression is ‘sooty’: a ‘well-fired roll with melted butter and cremated bacon and smoked black pudding’; later, tide-line tar, sea-shells, beach pebbles and plastic rope, and with a dash of water (don’t add too much) coal dust and uncooked cabbage. The taste is sweet and very smoky, with some liquorice and coal dust at full strength and mixed herbs with lime marmalade and a trace of blackcurrant at reduced strength. A most unusual colour although this distillery famously bottled some ‘Black’ expressions from 1964 which now fetch around £1,600 at auction: the original RRP was £100.

Duelling banjos dram

Islay

The unreduced nose had a definite kick – burning driftwood by boat sheds, canvas and leather (like a straight-jacket) and sucking salty smoke over oyster shells in a hookah pipe; but this duelling banjos dram had a pleasant side too – cranachan, honey, pear, citrus and vanilla; lime pickle and coal-dust never far away. The palate offered big, sweet, nutty smoke, liquorice, toffee and dark chocolate – grungy for sure, but tastier than expected – fruity flavours swirling around in a briny, oily puddle and chipotle and Tabasco tingling away at the mouth, like a memory of combat. The distillery is near a wreck.

Drinking tip: A dram for a hard road or daredevil moments – step up to the plate

The Whispered Kiss

Lowland

A whispered kiss from a ghost of a distillery. The nose tip toes around delicate peach skins, apple blossom and papaya. Sticky honey glaze on dainty cinnamon pastries. Musky notes reminded the panel of perfume departments and aromatherapy boxes. Crushed rose petals and wax candles in a dunnage warehouse. To taste they found crisp pear, mandarin, apple and mint and with water the fruits morphed into tinned peaches and cherry drops. Memories of childhood were evoked by talcum powder, allspice, citronella candle, and sandalwood. An gentle earthy warmth hovered while silky fruit syrup and honey lingered like a shadow.

Drinking tip: A graceful aperitif. Careful with the water.

Colour: Limpid gold

 Cask No. 31.27                       $195

Bold sailor’s dram

Highland, Island

A complex nose – sweet, salty and medicinal, with light smoke – panellists mentioned salted popcorn, gammon with pineapple, seaweed and various impressions of wood. With water, we imagined sea-breezes and bold sailors strutting along a breakwater, by oyster shells and dying barbeques; also sweet suggestions of apricot Danish and Edinburgh Rock. The palate was fascinating – maritime notes joined by citrus (including Terry’s chocolate orange), clove-studded gammon, oak, ash, white pepper and coal-dust. The reduced palate found sweet tobacco, floral flavours (lavender, Parma violets) and the dryness of heather smoke and barbecued meat and shellfish. The K Foundation burned £1,000,000 here in 1994.

Drinking tip: Beach barbeque dram – with or without sailors

Colour: Salvaged bullion just below the surface

 Cask No. 35.71                       $340

Like a hug from your mum

Speyside, Lossie

The nose gave us happy, homely feelings – ‘like a hug from my mum’ said the Malt-meister; mellifluous sweetness of maple syrup, marzipan and heather honey – but also marmalade on toast, jaffa cakes, leather and polished wood. The palate impressed with its chewy textures, aniseed, tobacco and coconut depth – plus its minty fresh liveliness, like mint choc-chip ice-cream. The reduced nose suggested a wooden box containing rolling tobacco, Coco Pops, After Eight mints and menthol cigarettes. The reduced palate – light leather, tobacco, Arm and Hammer toothpaste and orange zest. A time-stopping dram from the Elgin distillery that was once a brewery.

Drinking tip: An after dinner or late evening dram – but go easy on the water

Colour: Evening sun glow

Cask: Refill hogshead

Age: 40 years

Date distilled: October 1971

Alcohol: 47.7%

USA allocation: 84 bottles

Cask No. 44.60                               $130

‘Growing on you’

Speyside, Spey

The initial noses neat is not too inspiring, wet sand and freshly mixed cement, but give this one time. Notes of apricots, oranges and figs but also plum sauce, cedar wood, wild onions and a late summer rose emerge – intrigued? The taste is that of slightly burnt hot cross buns, black currant pastels, aniseed balls and coconut dusted chocolate truffles. With little water aromas of freshly cut wood, rosehip syrup, camp coffee and rye bread develop. The taste now is sweet and waxy with a dry grapefruit finish. This example, from the distillery situated in the village where the River Fiddich flows into the River Spey, is worth exploring.

Drinking tip: Teaches you the virtue of patience

Colour: Blingy brass

Buffalo Trace Distillery Releases Thirteenth Round of Single Oak Project Bourbon – American Whiskey News

 BT LOGO II

Buffalo Trace Distillery Releases Thirteenth Round of

Single Oak Project Bourbon

Experiment Focuses on Top of the Tree, Does it Taste Better than the Bottom?

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (May 15, 2014) – Does the top of the tree taste better than the bottom of the tree?  Buffalo Trace Distillery attempts to find out with the release of its thirteenth round of the Single Oak Project Bourbon.  This release features bourbons which were all aged in barrels made from the top half of the tree, while keeping the other variables such as entry proof (at 125), and stave seasoning the same.  The remaining variables, recipe (wheat or rye), grain size, warehouse type and char level vary.

If past online votes are any indication, fans are leaning towards the bottom half of the tree as their favorite, as barrel #82 remains in the lead, but with a new second place barrel coming on strong, #185, which is actually from the top of the tree.

“There are so many variables which can affect the taste of a bourbon, and no one has ever considered how the top or bottom of the tree from which the barrel is made as a factor,” said Kris Comstock, bourbon marketing director. “It’s an interesting concept to think about, and when this project is over, we may be asking our barrel manufacturer to only give us either the top or the bottom of the tree!”

It’s not too late to get in on the act and start reviewing, as three more releases will take place before this project ends in the summer of 2015.  More than 4,000 reviews have been given so far on www.singleoakproject.com.

The Single Oak Project is part of an intensive research project Buffalo Trace Distillery started conducting in 1999 by hand picking 96 trees with different wood grains and then dividing them into a top and bottom piece, yielding 192 unique sections. From there, staves were created from each section and were air dried for either 6 months or 12 months. After all the staves were air dried, a single barrel was created from each tree section, resulting in 192 total barrels. These barrels were given either a number three or a number four char and then filled with either wheat or rye recipe bourbon.

To further the variety of experiments, the barrels were filled at two different proofs, 105 and 125 proof.  And if this wasn’t enough, two completely different warehouses were used, one with wooden floors and one with concrete floors.  In total, seven different variables were employed in Buffalo Trace’s ultimate experiment.

For eight years the Distillery continued with its tracking process, creating intricate databases and coming up with a potential of 1,396 tasting combinations from these 192 barrels!

The Single Oak Project Bourbon is being released in a series every three months from 2011 through 2015 until all of the 192 barrels have been released. The first release hit select stores in 2011.  This thirteenth release will reach stores towards the end of May. Like all the other releases, the quantities are very limited. Every case will contain 12 bottles, each from a different barrel. The twelfth release is made up of barrel numbers 11, 13, 43, 45, 75, 77, 107, 109, 139, 141, 171, and 173. All releases will be packaged in a 375ml bottle. Suggested retail pricing per bottle is $46.35.

At the conclusion of the Single Oak Project, the Distillery plans to take the top rated Single Oak Project Bourbon and make more just like it, under the Single Oak name.

LAPHROAIG SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY UNVEILS LAPHROAIG SELECT – Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig Select

LAPHROAIG SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY UNVEILS LAPHROAIG SELECT

Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distributed by Maxxium UK, proudly reveals Laphroaig Select, the newest edition to the award-winning Laphroaig portfolio.

Laphroaig Select’s unique character is derived from the special selection of casks chosen for maturation.  The heart of the spirit is drawn from a final maturation in new American Oak casks, rarely used for Scotch whisky.

Representing a subtle blending of peat, oak and sweetness, Laphroaig Master Distiller John Campbell has selected the spirit from Laphroaig Quarter Cask, PX Cask, Triple Wood (European Oak casks) and a final addition of 10 Year Old to create Laphroaig Select.

Bottled at natural colour, the new single malt offers Laphroaig’s trademark ‘peat reek’ matched by an additional layer of complexity and depth brought about by the fusion of the maturation styles and different oaks.

Master Distiller John Campbell said; “Select is an exciting and unique expression that brings together the best of Laphroaig’s flavour profile. The inspiration for Laphroaig Select comes from perhaps our greatest family owner, Ian Hunter (1886-1954), one of the first distillers to experiment with both ‘new’ American and ‘traditional’ European oak maturation. As the world’s No.1 Islay malt whisky, we continue to stay true to our long and illustrious heritage, and this expression sits perfectly amongst our award-winning portfolio.”

Laphroaig Select is available in selected whisky specialists and retailers (RRP £34.99).

Tasting notes: Laphroaig Select (ABV 40%)

  • Colour: Full sparkling gold
