The Whisky Shop Japanese Whisky Gift Box

A 70cl bottle of Yamazaki Distillers Reserve with an ice sphere mould. In Japan ice is almost as important as the whisky itself. Traditionally, perfect ice spheres were hand carved so that the ice would roll around the glass. We have found an easier to replicate this. The ice sphere mould can be filled with water and kept in the freezer for when a traditional Japanese moment comes on!

The Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve is a wonderful balanced whisky. Full of soft, fresh fruits and Mizunara (Japanese Oak) aromas, this is a classic example of Japan’s number one whisky.

True Whiskey Lover’s Dream Becomes Reality ~ Experience Your Beloved Drink Straight From the Barrel – Whiskey News

oka-main

True whiskey lover’s dream becomes reality. Experience your beloved drink straight from the barrel.

What do men and true whiskey lover’s dream of? – Drinking the purest whiskey from an old cask.

London, UK, Nov. 18, 2015 – ZOOTY design workshop has just launched their new product on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. OKA – handcrafted wooden whiskey tumbler that brings a completely new way of experiencing your whiskey. Charred oak enhances all the flavors whiskey already has and reveals new ones.

Drinking whiskey from this charred oak tumbler is like drinking cask strength whiskey out of a 25 year old oak barrel stacked deep in a cold dark aging cellar. It’s what men and true whiskey lovers dream of. This wooden tumbler doesn’t replace your glass tumbler. Glass tumblers are pretty. But when you’re done feeling pretty, a mouthful of whiskey sipped from your wooden tumbler reminds you of the man that you are after a long day of doing the hard things in life a man does. The sense of the wood, the scent of the char, they speak to your soul. The soul of a man.

“Men drink whiskey because they like the taste,” said Kristopher K., COO of ZOOTY design workshop. “Our goal was to create experience that’s the closest possible to drinking straight from a cask by enhancing all those sweet, toasty and spicy aromas.”

When tasting whiskey from OKA tumbler you will notice that the scent is much softer and more pleasant compared to a glass tumbler. It is because charred oak interior absorbs part of strong alcohol aroma therefore allowing to feel the true characteristics of whiskey.

“Our tumbler is not meant for aging your whiskey,” said Toms Liepkalns, CEO of ZOOTY design workshop. “It is meant to flavor your drink instantly.” When relatively small amount of whiskey interacts with a large surface area of charred oak the results are incredible. All the flavours are increasing rapidly.

Round shaped bottom fits very comfortable in hand while the narrow top provides the best tasting experience. OKA not only flavors your whiskey but prevents it from warming as well.

This new product is available now on Kickstarter.

Oranges, spices and London honey

Speyside, Spey

Eastern scents of vintage herbal teas, jasmine and Chinese five-spice were first to appear on the nose; then an old polished bookcase surfaced with light earthy notes and steady hints of orange – Jaffa Cakes and Seville orange rind. To taste there was London honey, raw brown sugar and cigarette tobacco, with green stems giving a bitter finish. With water the nose delivered lightly perfumed hand soap and Yop drinking yogurt but with a sidekick of chilli spice and red pepper. The palate offered apricot tart and a balance of citrus and sweet notes – lemon barley sugar, burnt orange, toffee and cake mix. Sweet and spicy on the finish.

‘Two + Two = Five’

Speyside, Lossie

The variety of aromas is well worth exploring; rich sweet East India Sherry, peanut butter fudge, raisins, sultanas, currants but at the same time mangos, lychees and carambola as well as fennel, coriander and cinnamon. To drink neat ‘it goes down a treat’; a chocolate summer fruit pudding, waxy honeycomb, peach cranachan and spicy lemongrass tofu. A drop of water and aromas of fresh pine needles surprise before fresh oranges slices with honey and cinnamon arrived and the taste was now as smooth as silk like a banana macadamia coconut cream pie. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

A celebration of life

Speyside, Spey

Immediately bright and attractive, this sample just got better and better – soft candies, toffee, vanilla, strawberry Nesquik and flowers were joined by orange peel, lemon sherbet, coconut and pineapple, resulting in a pina colada-like celebration of life. On the palate, coconut, tobacco and pepper underlay exotic fruits (pineapple, monstera, papaya, orange peel, peach) and smooth, enticing, perfumed sweetness (vanilla panacotta, Turkish Delight, jasmine). Water refined the nose further (orange blossom, hint of mint, parma violets). On the reduced palate, darker shades developed – gingerbread, toasted coconut, light smoke – these, along with the perfumed, bitter fruit nicely balanced the unctuously sweet top-notes.

Drinking tip: Fresh and dry enough for an aperitif, but deserves to be a celebration dram – celebrating anything at all.

High on the hills with a lonely goatherd….

Speyside, Spey

Yodelay, woohoo! Maria gathered goodies for a hillside picnic with ripe tropical fruits: guava, peach and mango all melded together as rumtopf. She packed crystalline ginger, cranberries and vanilla toffee fudge with flasks of Calypso coffee and cherry punch. One panelist described the taste ‘very jammy’ with cherry ice cream. Another described it as Austrian germknödel (steamed dumplings) filled with plum or damson powidl  – either way truly scrumptious! Water teased out cinnamon buns and then juicy blackcurrant, licorice and maple syrup. Our bakery flavours became more exotic with cassia, anise, incense and hot chocolate sprinkled with paprika. Marvelous Maria!

Fulsome sweetness – quietly brooding peat

Highland, Island

The nose was rich, full-bodied and well-integrated – puff candy, treacle sponge, Madeira honey cake, toasted marshmallows and salted caramel – indeed the salt took some of us to a storm-lashed beach. The palate enjoyed a profitable tension between fulsome sweetness and gentle peat-smoke – Moffat toffees, malt extract, spice cupboards and vanilla, with ashtrays, salty tang and leather (horse-riding on the beach?). The reduced nose gave us old sea-chests, medicine cabinets, honey, raisins and quietly brooding peat. The palate now had Fisherman’s Friends, firework casings, salty chip-shop wrappers and a lady’s handbag. We all liked it, but some of us loved it.

Drinking tip: For a cold winter’s evening, by a fire of peats or logs.

Colour: North Berwick beach sand

Cask: Refill hogshead

Age: 19 years

Date distilled: November 1995

Alcohol: 54.6%

K&L California “The 2016 World Whisky of the Year is Here!” – Canadian Whisky News

AA CR-WB 2016

It’s here! For once in our lifetime a whisky that takes home the title “whisky of the year” is in stock, affordable, and available for anyone looking to try it! As if those aspects weren’t refreshing enough, Jim Murray’s award for 2016 also looks to shine a light on Canadian whisky–an underappreciated genre that perhaps gets lost in the madness of the current single malt and Bourbon shuffle.

Speaking about the award, Murray said: “Last year people were shocked when I gave Yamazaki the award – until they tasted it. Then they saw it was not the affront to Scotch they first thought and something truly extraordinary. This year, doubtless there will be many more eyebrows raised because rarely is Canada mentioned when it come to the world’s top whiskies. But, again, I have no doubt people finding the bottling I tasted will be blown away with this whisky’s uncompromising and unique beauty. It certainly puts the rye into Canadian rye.”

Your eyes do not deceive you! The 2016 whisky of the year is here, in stock, and it’s only twenty five bucks.

Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye Whiskey 750ml ($25.99)

NOTE: CARDBOARD CROWN ROYAL BOXES ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING ORDERS. ONLY THE BOTTLE ITSELF WILL SHIP. Rated whisky of the year by Jim Murray for 2016, the inexpensive. under-the-radar delight from Crown Royal is sure to catch a number of whisky aficionados off guard. Giving it 97.5 out of 100 points, Murray writes: “Rye, that most eloquent of grains, not just turning up to charm and enthrall, but to also take us through a routine which reaches new heights of beauty and complexity. To say this is a masterpiece is barely doing it justice. I have no doubt people finding the bottling I tasted will be blown away with this whisky’s uncompromising and unique beauty.”
