Green Spot “Château Léoville Barton at K&L California – Irish Whiskey News

kl_logo_trans

Green Spot “Château Léoville Barton” Finished Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (750ml)

( $89.99)

Whisky Advocate: “Mitchell & Son’s classic whiskey finished for 1 to 2 years in wine casks formerly used by the Barton family in the St-Julien appellation. Spiced apple, redcurrant, blushing pink young raspberries, with a deeper earthiness, like a hedgerow run wild. An autumnal character: apple, rhubarb, ginger, piquant fruits, more vanilla, then a finish of sweetened apple and peppercorns. A definite imprint from the higher-strength pot still. It feels like the wine has shaped, sculpted, and finessed the whisky beautifully. À votre santé!” (12/2015)

Aberlour 16 Year Old First-Fill Sherry Cask #4738 – TWE Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

AA Aberlour1

Aberlour 16 Year Old First-Fill Sherry Cask #4738 – TWE Exclusive

Last week saw the end of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival – five days of events across Scotland’s most densely packed whisky-producing region. We watched enviously as tweets, Facebook posts and the occasional bragging text message told tales of great whisky, music, food and general shenanigans. So as not to feel left out, we’ve been having our own minimalistic Speyside whisky festival at TWE HQ, with one very special new bottling.

Announcing our latest exclusive: Aberlour 16 years old, single first-fill sherry cask #4738.

It’s a hard life as a whisky tester for Aberlour…

Sat at the southern end of the town of Charlestown of Aberlour in the heart of Speyside, Aberlour has been producing whisky since 1879. A classic Speysider, it’s best known these days for sherry-matured drams – including the category-defining small-batch cask-strength sherry monster A’Bunadh – and when the distillery offered us the chance to select an exclusive single cask, the choice was clear: first-fill sherry.

While we love bourbon-cask-matured whisky – and our last exclusive was a first-fill-bourbon-matured 16-year-old Highland Park 1999 – the opportunity to grab a whole sherry cask for ourselves was too good to miss. It’s not chill-filtered and the colour is all natural – it looks amazing and the taste doesn’t disappoint:

AA Aberlour16

ABERLOUR 16 YO. SINGLE FIRST-FILL SHERRY CASK #4738. TWE EXCLUSIVE. 53.5% ABV

Nose: Rich and sticky, with cinder toffee, caramel sauce and vanilla-rich milk chocolate to start. Weighty and fruity notes of spiced raisins, warm leather, molasses, stewed plums, dates and flamed orange zest develop, with spicy cloves and hints of autumn forest.

Palate: Initially softer than the nose suggests, but after a burst of sweet berry fruit, prickly intensity rolls in. Spice – nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, anise and liquorice root – is joined by stewed fruit and rich Christmas-pudding sweetness. Savoury notes develop: charcoal, dark leather, tobacco and damp oak, but behind everything is a butter-and-brown-sugar sweetness, with flashes of marzipan-iced fruit cake.

Water: It can take water well, evening out both the sweet and savoury notes, leaving liquorice, blackcurrant jam and fruit cake.

Finish: Long and rich, with sweet stewed fruit and black liquorice slowly becoming savoury and revealing earthy dunnage warehouse notes and ashy barrel char.

Comment: An intense but well-balanced sherry-matured dram, marrying Aberlour’s weighty spirit with a punchy cask. It’s a bit of a beast, but the years of maturation have helped it mellow, dropping the strength to an eminently manageable 53.5% ABV and rounding off the rougher edges sometimes found in A’Bunadh to reveal the distillery’s fruity character.

This one’s a must for sherry heads and is available now from our website and London shop.

Ardbeg Dark Cove at Park Ave New York – Scotch Whisky News

AA Dark Cove

Ardbeg: ‘Dark Cove’  has arrived.

One of the year’s most highly anticipated single malt releases has hit our shelves.

The buzz has circled around Ardbeg ‘Dark Cove’ for awhile. Though our tiny allocation of committee bottles has come and gone – we did receive a (albeit small) delivery of non-committee bottles this week.  It is currently on our shelves but we know that not everyone can make into the store –  Here’s how the good people at Ardbeg describe ‘Dark Cove’.  “Take this whisky and hide it well. For its heart has been matured in DARK SHERRY CASKS, imparting waves of treacle toffee, coal tar, squid ink, noodles and toasted coffee grounds.  Inspired by our turbulent past, this whisky is a clandestine meeting of Ardbeg matured in ex-bourbon casks and a heart matured in dark sherry casks. The darkest Ardbeg ever.”

ARDBEG: Dark Cove = $135/btl

If you want a bottle please, please, please contact the store as it has not yet uploaded to our site!

Cheers!

AA SMWS Rainbow

May brings a swirl of lip-smacking flavours, perfect for settling into warm spring evenings.

CASK No. 46.29  SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED

14 years old; refill hogshead; 59.1%; Young & spritely

Young Bond prepared his cocktail: mint, Gomme syrup, cherry and violet. An arrangement of flowers with hard mint candies, chocolate chip ice cream, salted limes. The perfumed scent of some beauty lingered. A finale of marshmallow and Andes chocolate mints.

CASK No. 58.17  NOT SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED

10 years old; refill barrel; 60.4%; Spicy & dry

We stepped into a freshly cleaned old-fashioned candy shop but we left with pancetta and prosciutto! The taste neat was like an erupting volcano, but with a drop of water fruity aromas appeared and the finish was a perfect Martini.

CASK No. 1.179  THE ARTIST’S STUDIO

27 years old; refill hogshead; 47.2%; Sweet, fruity & mellow

An artist’s studio with aromas of paintbrushes, linseed and canvas. Our painter had arranged white lilies in a pewter jug. Toffee sponge cake and espresso. Figs and fresh almonds, caramel and syrup. Licking the bowl after baking. A hint of mint completed the masterpiece.

CASK No. G14.1  EAST MEETS WEST

28 years old; refill barrel; 47.8%; Spicy & sweet

Opening a bag of crispy fried corn kernels followed by bananas and baked sweet potato fries. To taste, a balance of sweet caramel glazed doughnuts and Indian and Thai spices. Water adds an ‘Afghan Monkey’ cocktail and a dried fruit mix.

CASK No. 121.88  LICKING THE WOODEN SPOON

15 years old; refill hoshead; 53.8%; Juicy, oak & vanilla

Enticing and inviting like hot crumpets with runny honey and buttered popcorn on the nose neat whilst on the palate a rich chocolate éclair. Water added spicy hot cross buns and a wooden rolling pin to this very charming dram that left us wanting more.

CASK No. 29.174  SHETLAND PONIES AT THE SEASIDE

20 years old; refill barrel; 56.7%; Peated

Trit trot over mossy grass! Woollen blankets scented with camphor and lavender. Barbecued Portuguese sardines and honey glazed eggplant with wasabi fresh sushi.  The ponies happily munched handfuls of malt, smoke mingling in their hairy coats. Candy floss and chalky rock.

Maker’s Mark® Introduces American Pharoah Commemorative Bottle

In 2015, American Pharoah captivated the hearts of fans worldwide by becoming the first-ever winner of horse racing’s fabled Grand Slam. By sweeping the Kentucky Derby®, the Preakness Stakes®, the Belmont Stakes® and the Breeders’ Cup® Classic, American Pharoah established himself as one of the greatest racehorses in history. Now, in anticipation of the 2016 racing season, Maker’s Mark® is celebrating this extraordinary achievement by introducing a limited-edition American Pharoah commemorative bottle. To further mark the occasion, Maker’s Mark and the Zayat family will also make a donation benefitting the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Endorsed and supported by American Pharoah owner Ahmed Zayat, the bottle features the now-legendary blue and yellow silks of Zayat Stables. “American Pharoah proved to an entire generation of racing fans that the impossible can be achieved,” said Zayat. “It was a joy for us to race him each and every time he took the track, and we thank Maker’s Mark for their fitting tribute to this once-in-a-lifetime racehorse.”

The limited-edition Maker’s Mark American Pharoah bottle will be available at select locations nationwide beginning on May 1st, 2016. Suggested retail price is $74.99. Please check your local retailer for availability.

In added celebration of American Pharoah’s Grand Slam win, Maker’s Mark and the Zayats will also make a donation to the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, KY. The Kentucky Derby Museum is a non-profit organization with an impassioned commitment to engage, educate and excite everyone on the extraordinary experience that is the Kentucky Derby®.

“Maker’s Mark has always had a strong connection with horse racing,” said Rob Samuels, Chief Operating Officer of Maker’s Mark Distillery. “Without the support of the thoroughbred industry in the early days of our brand, Maker’s Mark simply wouldn’t exist. We’re honored to help grow the sport we love while also commemorating one of the most remarkable achievements in sports history.”

About Maker’s Mark® Bourbon

In 1954, at a small Victorian distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a pioneering handmade bourbon that, for the first time, would appeal both to bourbon and to non-bourbon drinkers alike, that tasted good and exemplified good taste, and wouldn’t “blow your ears off,” which was the measure by which bourbons were judged at the time. He decided to make his whisky in small-batches of 19 barrels, developed a proprietary barrel char to enhance the softness and sweetness of his whisky, and then rotated each barrel by hand to ensure exposure to consistent temperatures throughout the warehouse, and, ultimately, he aged each barrel to taste. Bill Samuels, Sr., unknowingly and unintentionally, fired the shot that started the Bourbon Revolution, and transformed bourbon from a “commodity” into a premium handcrafted spirit, giving rise to the modern era of bourbon. Today, Maker’s Mark continues to make its bourbon the same way Bill Samuels, Sr., did 60 years ago, in small batches by craftsmen who hand-dip each bottle. In 2010, in tribute to his father’s spirit of innovation, Bill Samuels, Jr. unveiled Maker’s 46®, a totally new bourbon that reflects the distinct character of Maker’s Mark® but has a bigger, bolder and complex taste without any hint of bitterness. Maker’s Mark® Bourbon (45% alc./vol.) and Maker’s 46® (47% alc./vol.) are distilled, aged and bottled by the Maker’s Mark Distillery, Inc., in Loretto, Kentucky. In 1980, the distillery was designated a National Historic Landmark, becoming the first distillery in America to be so recognized, and has also been decreed as the “world’s oldest operating bourbon whisky distillery” by Guinness World Records®. The Maker’s Mark Distillery is one of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The Whisky Exchange “Glenlivet Nadurra Peated – a nostalgic dram” – Scotch Whisky News

twe_logo2

Glenlivet Nadurra Peated – a nostalgic dram

Whisky from The Glenlivet is known for its generous, fruity style, but did you know that in the past, its spirit was always lightly peated? The Speyside distillery has just launched the third bottling in its ongoing Nàdurra range, following the First Fill and Oloroso expressions. The new whisky was finished in casks that used to contain heavily peated whisky, which wraps a subtle layer of smoke around the fruit.

AA Alan!

Alan Winchester, master distiller at The Glenlivet

Glenlivet’s master distiller Alan Winchester said that the distillery only started to phase out its use of peat after World War II, when customers from the US demanded ‘lighter, sweeter whiskies’. Winchester, who described the Nàdurra range as ‘returning Glenlivet to its roots’, added: ‘Nàdurra means “natural” and with this new bottling, it’s fascinating to see a fruity, floral whisky with all those layers of peat.’

So, how does it taste? This is what I thought:

AA Glenlivet N

GLENLIVET NADURRA PEATED WHISKY CASK FINISH, 61.5%

Nose: Creamy, with sweet aromas of candied fruit, green banana and pink peppercorn. Freshness, too, in the form of green-apple skin and mango. Earthy peatiness and gentle smoke lurk in the background.

Palate: Packs a punch at full strength, with a blast of smoke and black pepper! With water, plenty of fresh green fruit (apple and pear), as well as a touch of spice from the cask. The peat then comes through, but it’s richer and riper than expected, with creamy, custardy notes joining in.

Finish: The clean fruits linger well with the soft smoke.

Comment: This would be an ideal ‘beginners’ peaty whisky. The peat isn’t raw or ragged; rather, it blends in with the fruit and spice and doesn’t dominate.

Certainly different from the Glenlivets I’ve tried in the past, and as I mentioned in the tasting note, this would be a great introduction to the world of peaty whisky, particularly for those who are reluctant to dive into a big-hitting Islay. Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish is available to buy from The Whisky Exchange here.
