Wemyss Family Collection introduced to the Wemyss blended malt range – Scotch Whisky News

Wemyss Family Collection Vanilla Burst & Treacle Chest

Wemyss Family Collection introduced to the Wemyss blended malt range

Family run, independent bottler Wemyss Malts is releasing a new range of blended Scotch malt whiskies that have been produced from the family’s private collection of maturing whisky casks. Rather than use whisky that has been purchased mature and ready to blend, Wemyss Malts has over the past decade sourced oak cask varieties to partner with single malt spirit selected from some of Scotland’s foremost distilleries.

Under the guidance of industry experts including Charlie Maclean, the Wemyss family have handpicked casks that show the perfect balance between wood and whisky to craft exceptional blended malt whiskies. Each yearly Wemyss Family Collection release will focus on one specific influence that impacts whisky, be it regional, malt style or cask effect.

The first two releases of the Wemyss Family Collection represent two opposite whisky styles; that of bourbon cask matured and sherry cask matured whisky. In keeping with other releases from Wemyss Malts, these new bottlings have been given flavour led names by the Wemyss tasting panel:

Vanilla Burst is the first release of the Wemyss Family Collection range and is a blend of only 2 Speyside single malts with a light and fruity character that were chosen to mature in 15 1st-fill Ex-bourbon barrels. The 4800 bottles of Vanilla Burst perfectly demonstrate an intense 1st fill bourbon wood influence on a light and sweet Speyside malt Scotch whisky.

Treacle Chest, selected as the second release of the Wemyss Family Collection range is a blend of only 2 Highland single malts with a sweet, cereal character that were chosen to be matured in just 14 1st-fill ex-sherry hogsheads. The resulting 6300 bottles of Treacle Chest are a perfect example of how rich and weighty 1st fill ex-sherry casks influence unpeated Highland Scotch malt whisky.

Both blended malts are bottled non chill-filtered, at natural colour and are 46% abv. They are presented in screen printed 70cl bottles with a striking charcoal and copper detailed gift carton.

William Wemyss, Founder and Managing Director at Wemyss Malts, commented: “It is with great anticipation and excitement that we release to the drinks enthusiast and whisky community the first two Wemyss Family Collection bottlings. We are very proud of the quality of these two blended malts and look forward to seeing how future yearly releases will compare.”

Isabella Wemyss, Director of Production at Wemyss Malts stated: “Great effort and time has been taken to ensure the Wemyss Family Collection will be remarkable blended malts, from the very first steps of selecting the spirit and sourcing exceptional casks from around the world, to selecting and blending the mature casks under the supervision of leading industry professionals.”

Wemyss Family Collection; Vanilla Burst and Treacle Chest will be available mid-August from selected retailers in the UK, EU and key Asian markets with suggested retail prices of £43 and £47.

Notes:

  • Edinburgh based Wemyss Malts is owned by the Wemyss family and their family seat in the brand logo is Wemyss Castle in Fife where they’ve lived since the 1300s.

Impeccably crafted flavours of Scotland: Diageo introduces the 2017 Special Releases Collection

Ten impeccable limited edition Scotch Whiskies will be released in limited quantities this autumn, as part of Diageo’s annual Special Releases collection. Highly anticipated by enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, the limited edition natural cask strength bottlings are rigorously selected each year, to form a rare and sought after collection.

For the first time ever, a limited edition Blended Malt Scotch Whisky containing whiskies from all twenty-eight active Diageo distilleries has been released. The COLLECTIVUM XXVIII is the tenth bottle to make up the Special Releases collection and the fourth NAS Malt Whisky in this series to date. Clear amber in appearance, the liquid is described as ‘enjoying real depth’ with a palate ‘all the way from dry and nutty to rich and chocolatey, with zestiness and sweetness.’

Meticulously crafted and beautifully packaged, the collection comprises some of the rarest and oldest liquids from both classic and unknown, closed distilleries. Each whisky within the range offers complex flavours of the highest quality, delivering truly memorable taste experiences for those lucky enough to drink them.

The 2017 Special Releases collection offers an extra special and rare gift alternative for this Christmas, with the whiskies in the range retailing from £90 for the LAGAVULIN 12 year old, to £2,625 for the PORT ELLEN 37 year old.

Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s Head of Whisky Outreach said: “The Special Releases range is always a highlight in our calendar year, it reflects the truly extraordinary range of stocks our blenders have available to them. The variety and quality of whiskies in the collection is simply impeccable. We’re looking forward to sharing this year’s collection with the world and in particular keen to see the response to the new COLLECTIVUM XXVIII.”

The PORT DUNDAS 52 year old is the oldest whisky ever released in the series, as well as the oldest bottle to ever be released by the Port Dundas distillery. The second release from the original distiller’s stocks, this is the fourth time a Single Grain Scotch Whisky has been included in an annual release. The liquid is described as ‘an excellent example of a very old grain… astonishingly rich and complex’. The GLEN ELGIN 18 year old has also made a welcome return to the range this year, a third release in this series, crafted from ex- Bodega European oak butts.

Each whisky in the 2017 Special Releases range is a limited edition, rare bottling, with four originating from closed distilleries. These whiskies have been crafted to deliver memorable taste experiences unlike any other, to be cherished and enjoyed responsibly.

About the Special Releases

During the late 1980s, the benchmark expressions of single malt whiskies from six single malt distilleries became well known under the CLASSIC MALTS name. Interest in older and rarer malt whiskies in general also grew during this period. One product of this was the RARE MALTS, a series of rarer releases begun in 1995, and which ended in 2005. There remained a demand for unusual, distinctive, often older, unrepeatable cask strength bottlings, usually of the CLASSIC MALTS. Such bottlings allowed collectors, connoisseurs and enthusiasts to enjoy and experience remaining older stocks, and/or unusual expressions of a distillery’s character – a treasure trove of priceless malts.

To satisfy this demand, the Special Releases series was born in 2001, and the annual collection – with familiar names and some surprises – has been eagerly awaited by enthusiasts ever since.

Jack Daniels Red Dog Saloon Limited Edition Bottle – American Whiskey News

RedDog

Red Dog Saloon Limited Edition Bottle

Though the town of Lynchburg has been dry for over 100 years, it should come as no surprise that the home of Jack Daniel’s wasn’t always that way. In fact, in 1892, Lynchburg was home to over 300 residents and no fewer than two bars. In 1892, Mr. Jack opened the Jack Daniel’s Red Dog Saloon on the Lynchburg Town Square. Mr. Jack had been inspired by the bustling saloons and bars of Nashville and decided that opening a bar in his hometown would be a good way to expand his whiskey business and, more importantly, bring the townsfolk of Lynchburg together. But Mr. Jack didn’t open just one bar, he opened two. The sophisticated White Rabbit Saloon and the more raucous Red Dog Saloon.

The Red Dog Saloon is thought to have sat where the town gazebo is now, but most knowledge surrounding the bar remains speculative at best. Even its name is shrouded in mystery. Did Jack have a dog that was red in color? Is it a reference to his amber whiskey? There is little written about it, so we may never know more than the stories we hear from the generations before.

In honor of this historical debut, we are offering a special edition bottle to commemorate the 125th Anniversary. It is available in limited quantities across the US for a suggested retail price of $28.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Nose: A richness of maraschino cherries, wild berries and boiled sweets combine with softer notes of fruit and nut chocolate, almond ice cream and watermelon to give a warm and pleasant introduction to this twelve year old dram.

Palate: The gentle nature of the palate does not hint that this is a cask strength whisky with Viennese whirls, milk chocolate, cantuccini biscuit, walnut whip present alongside cloves, almonds and syrup.

Finish: Salted caramel, gentle make and dunnage warehouse notes influence this true Campbeltown malt, while coffee bean, clotted cream, hazelnut and liquorice all add a further dimension to this superb dram ensuring you return for a refill.

Message from WM Cadenhead’s

As some of you may know, WM Cadenhead’s recently released their shop single casks to celebrate their 175th anniversary and they have asked us to include a message to you all in this newsletter:

Hopefully many of you are currently enjoying some of the amazing whiskies we released this week as part of the Cadenhead’s 175th anniversary celebrations, the highlight undoubtedly being the launch of the single casks bottled for each of our shops.

It has come to our attention that one complete set of the 10 casks bottled in the collection has already found its way into the hands of an auction site and it’s fair to say that we’re disappointed that such an incident has occurred. As most of you know, we do not condone the process of flipping – buying bottles just to sell them on immediately – and while we appreciate that many people build whisky collections for a number of reasons, it’s saddening that some people take advantage of our excellent whiskies and reasonable pricing just to try and turn a quick profit. In this case, an auction house managed to take possession of some of these bottles before some shops had even been able to put theirs on sale which no doubt most of you will find as frustrating as we do.

The UK Cadenhead’s shops took a joint decision this week to each sell 12 complete sets of the 10 casks bottled in the series, making 36 in total, and it’s a shame that at least one of these sets will end up turning a profit at auction rather than being in the hands of someone who who will properly appreciate what they have. We are always keen to ensure that our bottlings are distributed as fairly as possible and in future, in cases where we are able to identify flippers (not genuine collectors and certainly not people who buy our whisky to drink), we will ensure that those people do not get access to any special releases before the rest of our members.

Malt Barns

Our Malt Barns are currently being renovated and are therefore out of action for a few weeks. This work will be completed in approximately 7 weeks time and we shall keep all of our followers up to date with developments on our Social media outlets.

If you are visiting the distillery during the next few weeks while the work continues, please note that you will not be able to enter the Malt Barns as part of the distillery tour and that tour prices have been temporarily adjusted to reflect this. The details are contained on the attached poster.
