Scotch Malt Whisky Society of Canada January 2018 Outturn – Scotch Whisky News

SMWS Jan18CA

January Outturn is a celebration of Scotland’s national poet Rabbie Burns with 7 colourful characters to address the haggis with!

CASK NO. 35.157  REWARD FOR A BRASS BAND

14 years old; 1st fill barrel; 58.2%; Juicy, oak & vanilla

The nose has alluring freshness – nougat, chocolate, dried grass, flowers and honeyed apricot flan – hints of polished wood. The palate displays sweet, juicy top notes (fudge, cinnamon biscuits, raisins, orange zest) and deeper notes of toasted oak and oiled cricket bats.

CASK NO. G9.3  FRUIT, SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE

16 years old; 2nd fill barrel; 62.6%; Juicy, oak & vanilla

Creamy vanilla and sawdust with cinnamon and nutmeg lead to milk chocolate and oily walnuts with intriguing peppermint freshness. The palate delivered brown sugar, mango and chocolate orange with Caribbean rum. Water accentuated lemon sherbet and a satisfying finish of dark chocolate, apple pie and candied orange.

CASK NO. 73.84  TUG OF WAR IN A MEADOW

15 years old; refill butt; 57.4%; Sweet, fruity & mellow

The frolicsome nose suggests apple strudel in a Spring meadow, but playful spice dominates the palate – cinnamon and nutmeg on apple pie.

CASK NO. 37.89  A COSY SLIPPER SIPPER

17 years old; 1st fill French oak hogshead; 53.9%; Deep, rich & dried fruits

Muscovado sugar combined with cinnamon, nutmeg and roasted sweet chestnuts. Then figs, dates and porcini mushrooms came to the fore with blood oranges and spiced rhubarb and ginger tart. Sweetness turned to fudge with heather honey before finishing with dark chocolate. Previously matured in an ex-bourbon hogshead.

CASK NO. 7.167  CHOCOLATE PRALINES IN AN OAK BOX

26 years old; 1st fill American oak PX hogshead; 54%; Spicy & sweet

Old dunnage warehouse with suggestions of soft fudge, nougat, toffee and dark chocolate pralines. Fruit followed with roasted peach and demerara sugar, overripe strawberries, gooseberries and rum soaked cherries before chili chocolate, freshly ground coffee and spiced orange chocolate covered marzipan. Previously matured in an ex-bourbon hogshead.

CASK NO. 10.117  SMOKY, SALTY, SWEET PORRIDGE

9 years old; refill barrel; 61.2%; Peated

Neat, plenty of smoke and tar on the nose with an unusual porridge to taste. Water calmed tempers with an underlying sweetness revealed.

CASK NO. 66.99  PINE-SMOKED SALMON AND BURNING HEATHER

8 years old; custom virgin oak barrel; 60%; Peated

Plumes of incense and high intensity smoke. Dried raspberries, a sprig of scorched heather and peppery pine-smoked salmon. Previously matured in a bourbon barrel.

Secrets of a Highland heirloom inspire Glenmorangie Cadboll – Scotch Whisky News

Cadboll

Secrets of a Highland heirloom inspire Glenmorangie Cadboll

Whisky finished in ex-sweet French wine casks brings dessert-like flavours to Travel Retail

A centuries-old Highland heirloom is the inspiration for the dessert-like flavours of Glenmorangie Cadboll, the latest release in Glenmorangie’s Travel Retail Legends Collection. Finished in barriques which previously held sweet French wines such as those of Muscat and Sémillon grapes, this rich and sweet single malt whisky is a fitting celebration of the Scottish artistry and French influences which shape its namesake, the Cadboll Cup.

Exclusive to Travel Retail, the Glenmorangie Legends Collection is a unique series of single malt whiskies which showcases Glenmorangie’s pioneering wood expertise through innovative cask assemblages and intriguing extra-maturations. Each expression in the collection (Glenmorangie Duthac, Glenmorangie Tayne, Glenmorangie Cadboll and limited-edition Glenmorangie Tarlogan) is inspired by the legendary lands which have homed Glenmorangie’s Highland Distillery since 1843.

Glenmorangie Cadboll, the collection’s third permanent release, pays homage to a precious 16th century silver wine cup long treasured by the MacLeods of Cadboll, whose connections with Glenmorangie’s homeland run deep. In 1699 they created Glenmorangie’s Highland home, Glenmorangie House (then Cadboll House) a few miles from where the Distillery now stands.

Inspired by the heritage Glenmorangie shares with the cup, Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s acclaimed Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks, set out to create a whisky which would evoke its craftsmanship – and hint at the sweet wines of the 16th and 17th centuries it might once have held. Reflecting the Highland provenance of the cup, which is in the collections of National Museums Scotland, he selected a parcel of spirit which had spent its life in ex-bourbon casks in the Distillery’s warehouses, not far from Glenmorangie House. Then in tribute to its French elements, he chose superior casks which formerly contained his most favoured sweet French white wines, including those of Muscat and Sémillon grapes, in which the expression would be extra-matured.

Dr Bill said: “The Cadboll Cup’s secret past is fascinating. Even now, no one knows who crafted the cup – or how its marriage of Highland and continental design came to be. Glenmorangie Cadboll is our sumptuous celebration of its contrasting character. The whisky’s aromas of baked bread and toasted brioche remind me of France. It is delightfully smooth and sweet on the palate, with tastes of mint humbugs, milky toffee and a long finish, full of old-fashioned confectionery. I hope the travelling connoisseur will enjoy this sweet tribute to our homeland’s heritage.”

More Accolades for ImpEx Expressions!! – Whisky News

Check Out These Fantastic Whisky Advocate Reviews!!

If you thought the previous email had all the achievements we received this year, you were mistaken.

This year, Whisky Advocate compiled a list of their Top 20 Whiskies of the year.  Below are a couple of really distinguished highlights from that list which we’re especially proud of.

Earning 93 points, Tamdhu Batch Strength #002 came in at #8!!

Check out Susannah’s tantalizing description below the tantalizing image.

 Tamdhu BS

“Historically used for blending, Tamdhu flies under the radar of many scotch aficionados. But this underappreciated Speyside whisky compares well with more famous sherry bombs by offering a sweet, savory, slightly funky depth. At first sniff, Tamdhu seems like it might knock you out with one blow—but this gentle giant is a lover, not a fighter. Viscous and meaty, this cask-strength stunner reveals dried fruit, dark chocolate ganache, ginger spice, and saline minerality, thundering softly into a long finish.” ~ Susannah Skiver Barton

Coming in at #20 with 90 points, Fukano Japanese Whisky – 2017 made the list!

In fact, this is the only Japanese whisky to make it to the list!! If you like Japanese whiskies you must try Fukano; it’s unlike anything else!  If you haven’t tried Japanese whiskies yet, you must; it’s unlike anything else!   Check out Jonny’s mouth-watering review below the image.

Fukano

“Japanese rice whiskies enjoy a cult following for their delicate flavors. This Fukano stands out with its ethereal fruity delights, the result of meticulous vigilance to preserve the spirit’s subtle nature. It brings a supple nose of lychee, ripe peaches, Smarties, watermelon, allspice, and white pepper. A light, slightly syrupy texture is underscored by watermelon and raspberry as it unwraps peach, nectarines, rhubarb, and custard candy, fruit Life Savers, stewed fruits, red berries, and light citrus. Fukano promises to broaden our whisky horizons.” ~ Jonny McCormick

Thanks again for being part of our family and enjoying these fine whiskies with us. We look forward to bringing you more excellent whiskies in 2018!

Happy New Year!
