Nikka “From The Barrel” Blended Japanese Whisky at K&L California – Japanese Whisky News

Nikka “From The Barrel” Blended Japanese Whisky

$59.99

(750ml)

Whisky Advocate

For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries.

When taking into account the full array of casks—bourbon barrels, sherry butts, refill hogsheads, and more—over 100 different constituent whiskies are enlisted. “From the Barrel” suggests barrel proof, but that’s not the case. The blenders made a conscious decision to bottle at 51.4% (derived from 90 British Proof) to deliver maximum flavor impact.

They succeeded. Notably balanced and elegant, the colorful palette of whiskies combines for tremendous depth of flavor. Soft, sweet butterscotch and orange peel meet poached pears and stone fruits. Earthiness appears as dried autumn leaves, coffee, old oak, and tobacco. Among the tangle of spices, tasters identified chili pepper, allspice, cloves, and universally adored its ginger note. Finally, wisps of smoke and sea salt. Overall, it feels generously malty, with the grain whisky lending broad sweetness and supple mouthfeel across the long finish.

Beyond its delightful flavors, Nikka From the Barrel presents some paradoxes worthy of contemplation over a glass. It is a classic, yet new to the U.S. It is typically Japanese, yet singularly magnificent. Jeffery Lindenmuth

The #1 Whiskey of the Year on Whiskey Advocates Top 20 list in 2018 is now being offered without an allocation limit for the first time thanks to our special relationship with the importer. The wonderful Nikka From the Barrel has been one of the most sought-after offerings from this special distiller based outside of Sapporo. It’s previously not been available in the US due to the USA restriction on the 500ml bottle size, but thankfully the owners designed a 750ml version for the US market. This is a blend of many of the Nikka whiskies we know and love dumped and mingled for further marrying in a large vat at the distillery, hence “from the barrel.” It’s one of the few higher proof offerings available from any Japanese distiller and has a unique character. While the Hibiki Harmony might be the most popular blended Japanese whisky available in the US, From The Barrel is easily the most flavorful. This is nicely aged Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Coffey Grain and Imported Malt further aged post blending and bottled at 102.8 proof. No wonder people are going rabid for the stuff, it’s absolutely delicious!

D&M: RARE AND EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY ~ OUTSTANDING 12 YEAR AGE STATEMENT RYE – American Rye Whisky News

RARE AND EXCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITY!:

OUTSTANDING 12 YEAR AGE STATEMENT RYE

Founded by Joshua Thinnes (pictured above), SF-based Subtle Spirits is an independent bottler of fine spirits which uniquely marries the world of art and distillation in extremely limited edition releases. Prior to creating the business, Josh had spent 11 years as a buyer at a well-known wine and spirits retailer and, in that capacity, had the privilege of tasting thousands of offering from top producers around the world. Initially, his interests skewed toward wine but after frequent trips to Kentucky to select single casks of bourbon and rye for the store, his spirits obsession seriously congealed. Then, after a three-week pilgrimage to Scotland, he was officially hooked and inspired to launch his own business.

Leveraging the relationships he has forged over the years, Josh sources premium distillate from leading producers and bottles single casks and proprietary blends under his own labels. And although the brand may suggest otherwise, there is nothing “subtle” about Josh’s creations as they tend to be bold, rich and complex on both the nose and palate.

As alluded to earlier, in addition to sourcing world-class juice from leading distillers, Josh, who is a musician at heart, saw an opportunity to integrate his creative passions into the project and thus commissions original artwork from extremely talented local artists to grace the bottles of each release. That art is a critical part of the overall enjoyment experience of his offerings and makes for bottles that are collectible in and of themselves.

From the outset, we at D&M have been big fans of and friends with Josh and carried several of his limited releases on our shelves. As such, when our three owners were on a Kentucky distillery circuit tour this past Spring, they stopped to visit with him at Old Louisville and taste through the barrels he has been ageing there for his Single Barrel Project (SBP). After sampling through over a half dozen Rye barrels from MGP they were enamored with RIK-113, a 12 Year old that was distilled in the fall of 2012. At bottling this singular barrel yielded 150 bottles with a whopping finished proof of 62.1% ABV.

Subtle Spirits 12 Year Volume 4 RIK-113 Rye Whiskey – SBP

$169.99

The nose opens with aromas of caramelized brown sugar, dill, fennel, clove, fresh orange, wood shavings, maple syrup on rye bread, and a bit of white pepper. The palate has an initial wallop of pepper with orange peels, apple butter, vanilla bean, caraway, thyme and oak. The proof shows itself at full strength, but water opens the nose and palate nicely.

BIMBER DISTILLERY LAUNCHES ITS LATEST ‘SHOULDERS OF GIANTS’ RELEASES – English Whisky News

BIMBER DISTILLERY LAUNCHES ITS LATEST

‘SHOULDERS OF GIANTS’ RELEASES

London 31/07/25: Bimber has today announced the launch of its latest releases from its acclaimed ‘Shoulders of Giants’ series — the distillery’s homage to the diverse tapestry of thinkers, innovators and visionaries who have shaped our world.

Following our previous release, Pablo – The Artist, which paid tribute to artistic innovation, we were inspired to take the next step in our creative journey. This time, we continue that journey with a broader lens. UK editions draws inspiration from beyond our borders. Why? Because art knows no boundaries, and neither does greatness.

These UK-exclusive editions are inspired by and pay tribute to three legendary figures from the world of art: Vincent — The Dreamer, Claude — The Impressionist and Leonardo — The Visionary. Each release honours their creativity through remarkable single cask whisky that reflects their unique artistic vision.

By celebrating great artists from around the world, we share a passion for creativity- just like our whisky, crafted with skill and imagination. These artists show what it means to work with passion and create something truly extraordinary.

In addition to the UK releases, we’re also proud to present three exclusive editions created for Germany, inspired by some of the engineering pioneers who changed the course of history: Karl — The Inventor, Rudolf — The Engineer and Nicolaus — The Inventor. These single cask whiskies pay tribute to the spirit of invention and mechanical genius, values that echo our own commitment to precision and craftsmanship.

This latest release features six meticulously crafted single malt whiskies, each produced using Bimber’s traditional methods. From the distillery’s single farm barley and dedicated floor at Warminster Maltings, to seven day open-topped fermentation and directly fired copper pot stills – every stage of Bimber’s production process has been designed to produce a rich, fruit-forward whisky that is celebrated for its depth and complexity.

Each expression in the ‘Shoulders of Giants’ series is bottled at natural cask strength and features attention-grabbing artwork and biographical details that celebrate the accomplishments of historical figures who have dared to dream and defied status quos.

Drawn from Bimber’s growing inventory of fruit-forward single malt whiskies, each ‘Shoulders of Giants’ release offers a different story both inside and outside of the bottle.

At Bimber, we craft our whisky with that same spirit of inventive precision and dedication. These latest ‘Shoulders of Giants’ releases are a testament to the craftsmanship behind our fruit-forward single malt London whisky – and to the quality and variety of the casks we use.”
