1994 Miltonduff 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt – Scotch Whisky News

KL1

A Rare, Aged Beauty from an Under-the-Radar Distillery
1994 Miltonduff 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($129.99)
“It’s quite a rare thing to see [Miltonduff] bottled on its own as a single malt, and we’re supremely happy to have had the chance to do it.” —Andrew Whiteley, K&L NorCal Spirits Buyer

Single malt offerings of Miltonduff are about as rare as they come. The spirits from this Speyside distillery most commonly find their way into the blend at Ballantine’s, but every so often a single malt cask comes to the market. When it does, we make it a point to secure it as quickly as we can. This 24 year rendition is, in a word, gorgeous. Notable for its elegance and grace, it has the kind of broad appeal that will delight legions of whisky fans. Its time in barrel has taken an already exceptional dram and elevated it. A classic Speyside profile is delightfully accented by notes of nut, herb, camphor, and tea. There is a rich and luxurious approach to this single malt, yet it never loses its elegance and refinement. Scotch of this age and pedigree often command prices upwards of $200, so the value here is incontestable. Because it so rarely is seen, many have not sampled aged Miltonduff, except for those who have quickly become ardent fans. A mere 266 bottles of this exclusive made it to our shelves and our stock is quickly diminishing. Those who add this under-the-radar find to the bar will be very happy they did.

1994 Miltonduff 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($129.99)

The strikingly underappreciated Miltonduff distillery is unique in so many ways. Built on the site of an old mill for the Pluscarden Abbey, the distillery’s old stone buildings hide one of Speyside’s most delicious malts. Originally a Priory founded by King Alexander II in 1230, the area became renowned for illicit distillation. Originally licensed in 1824, the name, Milton, was taken from a still that operated on the property. The Duff family owned the lands surrounding the abbey, hence the name Miltonduff. The malt became an important component of the renowned and still well-regarded Ballentine’s blend. Small quantities are released via trades to independent bottlers, but the new owners (Chivas Regal) haven’t made an effort to market the malt as a standalone whisky. Its quality and rarity mean that bottlers often charge a premium and we’ve seen countless young offerings for over $100. So, when this cask of fully matured Miltonduff came our way, we knew we couldn’t say no. Just a few months shy of that magic 25 year old age statement which would have added a solid 40% to the price tag, this is one old Speysider you can’t afford to miss. The older Ballentine’s blends are regularly awarded high praise from the critics and Miltonduff is a big part of that story. This old elegant whisky is the most approachable of the 20+ year old single casks that we’ve brought in this year – full of fruit, malt, and unprecedented purity.

Pour little Miltonduff. Nobody seems to want to admit that this stuff is world class. Critics ignore it, amateurs are unaware of it, and aficionados don’t even pretend to understand it. It took us a while to sell the last exclusive Miltonduff because most people wouldn’t get on board. When they finally got around to tasting it, the stuff flew out the door. This cask might sadly suffer a similar fate. Waiting on our shelves to be discovered, the lucky few who dip their toes in without bias will be rewarded handsomely. Quite an old school nose, with hints of citrus, wisps of clean smoke, marzipan, and savory herbs. The somewhat subdued nose is in total contrast to the massive intensity of the palate. It’s all citrus, cake frosting, and herbs. Again though, none of the smoke. It has a bit of camphor and a warming minty green tea finish. With water, it just explodes with flavors offering an absolutely stunning bouquet of aromatic complexities. It’s a terrible shame that more people aren’t jumping all over this beauty. If you don’t act soon you might just miss the malt of your dreams. Once the geeks get a hold of this one, I think that they’ll be hoarding it.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 10, 2018

We don’t get to see a lot of Miltonduff which is a shame. It offers a wonderful flavor prospective to the single malt selection at K&L. The nose has bright nice pear fruit-like aromas that have wax and honey undertones. In the mouth the entry is sweet, followed with concentrated flavors that have dried fruit nuances. There is a long finish. I thought the Miltonduff 24 was enjoyable with and without an addition of water.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 01, 2018

An especially clean and pure spirit, even at such an age. Miltonduff is most well known for being the top dressing malt for Ballantine’s wonderful and elegant blends. It’s quite a rare thing to see it bottled on its own as a single malt, and we’re supremely happy to have had the chance to do it. There are lots of butterscotch, Werther’s Original cream, and caramel notes to this malt. A bit of buttered popcorn and a fine drizzle of melted milk chocolate round it all out. For those who normally drink the classic malts of Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, this is a luxurious rise to the top of that style ladder without paying the premium associated with the very old bottles from those illustrious distilleries. Not a hint of smoke here, just a little dried nuttiness and a faint herbal note round out everything with a slight savor. At the natural cask strength of 50.8% ABV, this is utter perfection.

Neal Fischer | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 30, 2018

There’s quite a lot of caramel and butter in this whisky. That then is followed by a whisper of smoke which is nearly overpowered by vanilla bean, molasses, and candy chews. Luckily, its also zesty with bright scents of orange peel and freshly squeezed lime. The caramel flavors continue on the palate with a great warm bready quality. Its also got strong layers of nuttiness and leather adding some depth. In the finish, the leather and caramel stand strong with the assistance of warming spice.

Blood Oath Pact No. 5 Launches This Spring

Fifth expression in ultra-premium series is finished in Caribbean rum casks

(St. Louis) March 18, 2019 – Blood Oath Pact No. 5 – the fifth installment of the acclaimed Blood Oath ultra-premium bourbon series – launches in April. The Blood Oath series, the creation of Lux Row Distillers’ Head Distiller and Master Blender John Rempe, combines unique bourbons, expertly blended for a distinctively exclusive whiskey.

Not to be missed, Pact No. 5 starts with an eight-year-old ryed bourbon rested in used dark Caribbean rum barrels for six months to add a touch of warm island spice. Once this bourbon picked up some of the rum notes, Rempe combined it with an 11-year-old silky wheated bourbon and an extra-aged, peppery 13-year-old rye bourbon. The result is a well-balanced, spicy, sweet, lingering bourbon with complex flavor notes.

“When selecting these bourbons, I knew the dark rum sweet notes would be a perfect complement for these well-aged bourbons, and the result is extremely satisfying,” says Rempe. “On the nose, Pact No. 5 comes right off with dark fruit notes, brown sugar and a touch of orange zest, followed by sugar cane and dark chocolate notes and a little heat once you sip it. This one offers a lingering finish, accented by notes of honey.”

This year’s release returns to its original fire-branded wooden display box. Like its predecessors, the bottle is topped with a custom, eco-friendly natural cork, sealed and hand-labeled with certificate-style paper stock, including Rempe’s signature, and bottled at 98.6 proof. Pact No. 5 is available globally in 750ml bottles, with a suggested retail price of $99.99.

Pact No. 5 is a limited release, with only 15,000 cases (3-packs) created; this bourbon will never be made again. The Blood Oath series launched in 2015 with Pact No. 1, and will highlight a different variant, or Pact, each year.

“This series, and the creativity it allows, is something I am passionate about and always looking for new combinations and ideas,” says Rempe.

Gouden Carolus Single Malt is a refined whisky distilled from the mash of Gouden Carolus Tripel beer.  A first for Belgium are the hand hammered, copper pot stills, in which the pure mash is distilled.  The result is a pure and clear distillate.

The ensuing aging in First Fill Bourbon casks followed by a further aging in ‘Anker’ casks (oak casks reworded by the cooper according to the distillery’s own specifications) results in a refined whisky with a rich and balanced taste.  The subtle fruit aromas are delightfully enhanced by hints of wood and vanilla.

From 1637 to 1914, the miller’s family Van Breedam ground and distilled grain into jenever on the Molenberg in Blaasveld. In 1872, Louis Van Breedam and his sister left the Molenberg to become brewers in Mechelen. The Molenberg is still in the hands of the family and they continue the tradition.

Charles Leclef grew up in the brewery but remained in touch with the Molenberg in Blaasveld, where his uncle lives.  After modernizing the brewery, Charles came up with a daring plan. In the Molenberg, he wanted to distill beer to alcohol: whisky.  This whisky distillery has become the perfect match between two family traditions, brewing and distilling.

Nose: Fruit, vanilla, and crème brûlée.

Palate: Full and balanced; notes of wood and vanilla.

MORTLACH THE SINGING STILLS: MORTLACH 47-YEAR-OLD WHISKY’S BEST KEPT SECRET – Scotch Whisky News

MORTLACH THE SINGING STILLS: MORTLACH 47-YEAR-OLD

WHISKY’S BEST KEPT SECRET

Mortlach release a 47-Year-Old single malt: the oldest ever bottling direct from the Mortlach distillery

In April, Mortlach will unveil the oldest and most precious secret from their distillery, Mortlach 47-Year-Old. Mortlach 47 is the first in The Singing Stills series, a bold new collection of incredibly rare single cask expressions drawn from the final three casks of 1971.

Distilled and matured by the experts and unmoved from its original warehouse since 1971, Mortlach 47 is the oldest ever bottling direct from the Mortlach distillery. The first cask yielded a total of only 94 bottles, which will be released through a global online registration to satisfy the anticipated demand from collectors. Launching on 9th April, Justerini & Brooks, rare and collectable wine and spirits merchants and Royal Warrant holders since 1761, will exclusively oversee the registration, where whisky connoisseurs can submit their interest to purchase a bottle, recommended retail selling price £10,000 in the United Kingdom.

On the eve of the opening of the global registration, the Mortlach whisky experts will first share with a select few, this treasured secret from their distillery. On 9th April in two cities across the globe, London and Singapore, 47 people will be amongst the first to taste the subtle and intriguing complexity of Mortlach 47, in an exclusive tasting experience. A small number of places will be held back, reserved for those that want to experience the secret the most. To be a part of the 47, enthusiasts of Mortlach can register their interest online at exceptionalwhisky.com.

Mortlach has to date been considered a closely guarded secret of the whisky world. Revered as ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ for its rich character, Mortlach has a very unique distillation process. Since 1896 Mortlach has been precisely 2.81 times distilled, it is a mysterious method simply called ‘The Way’, made even more curious by the whimsical hum reverberating from the copper stills. The Singing Stills series celebrates the mysterious notes coming from the stills and the unusual robust character of Mortlach, which sets the liquid apart from the sweet and mellow style of other Speyside whiskies.

The sound of the stills is as distinctive to the distillery as the taste of the whisky. To bring this to life, celebrated contemporary composer, Alexis Ffrench has created a piece of original music, inspired by the hum of the stills. The soulful melody will be played for the first time on 9th April at the launch experience in London and Singapore, and sound the opening of the global registration.

A further one bottle of Mortlach 47 will be exclusively available, ahead of the global registration opening, in an auction for charity by Bonham’s HK on 25th March. All the money raised from the private event will go to the chosen charity partner, Daughters of Tomorrow.

Ewan Gunn, Global Mortlach Ambassador comments, “This Mortlach 47 Year Old, is an exquisite Single Malt Scotch Whisky. In a region generally known for its smoother, gentler style of whisky, Mortlach’s exceptional bold and complex flavours, bridge the gap between mellow and smoky. Authentic in character, Mortlach 47 has a velvety body with notes of honey, hot toasted wood and dark chocolate with a buttery smoothness, a prelude to a delicate, lightly perfumed finish.”

This extremely limited 47-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky will be exquisitely presented in a bespoke glass bottle with stand out angular shoulders and enclosed in a royal blue case. It is a seamless addition to the finest of whisky collections around the globe.

ABOUT MORTLACH

Mortlach distillery was founded in 1823 by James Findlater and his two partners Donald McIntosh and Alexander Gordon. In 1852 the distillery was reopened by John Gordon after a few silent years, then in 1854 Gordon took on George Cowie as a partner, creating John Gordon & Co. Cowie became the sole owner when John Gordon died in 1867.

Dr. Alexander Cowie oversaw the very first spirit distillation, through a completely unique and fiendishly complex process, which he used his scientific acumen to craft. He was not a distiller by trade and had not long returned from a posting in the exotic climes of Hong Kong, where he spent five years practicing medicine. After the untimely death of his brother, he returned to run Dufftown’s oldest distillery with his father George, who learned the craft of distilling after a career carving the great Scottish railways into the rugged landscape as an engineer, before becoming the owner of the Mortlach distillery. George bestowed it all to Alexander when he died, and Alexander doubled the stills his father left him.

Highland Park’s latest whisky gets under your skin ~ Partnership with famed Nordic tattoo artist celebrates Orcadian culture – Scotch Whisky News

Highland Park’s latest whisky gets under your skin

Partnership with famed Nordic tattoo artist celebrates Orcadian culture

Monday 25th March 2019:  Highland Park today announces the launch of 16-Year-Old single malt whisky Twisted Tattoo, the first expression from the Orkney-based distillery to combine whisky matured in rioja seasoned wine casks and first fill bourbons casks.

A rich and full-bodied whisky with notes of light heather peat and soft red fruits, the inspiration for Twisted Tattoo comes from Orkney’s Norse ancestry and the Viking legend of the Midgard Serpent which grew so large it twisted around the earth to bite its own tail.

To bring this mythology to life on the bottle, Highland Park has partnered with renowned Danish tattoo artist Colin Dale, who specialises in the ancient art of dot-work tattooing – a freestyled, non-electric tattoo technique – to create Twisted Tattoo’s striking design.

Dale’s research has helped to reintroduce the lost tattooing techniques of the Nordic, Native American and Inuit cultures. His studio, Skin & Bone, uses both traditional and modern techniques to tell stories on skin.

With an ABV of 46.7%, Twisted Tattoo is available exclusively from The Whisky Shop. RRP £80.

Chris Anderson, head of Edrington brands at Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, said: “Highland Park is incredibly proud of its Orcadian routes, which is why so many of our whiskies celebrate our home – and Twisted Tattoo is no different.

“Highland Park is innately Nordic and we want to pay homage to this through the launch of our latest whisky and partnership, which brings liquid and art together.”

Jason Craig, global brand director, Highland Park, said: “For us, Colin Dale was an ideal choice as a creative partner. He is the perfect example of a modern-day Viking Soul and our partnership show off the similarities between our crafts.

“Tattoos are emotionally important and tell stories on the skin, much like our whisky tells the tales of our Orkney islands’ ancestry. Both arts can be traced back hundreds of years with the traditional skills still playing a key role in the tattooing and whisky making process today.”

About Highland Park, the Orkney Single Malt with Viking Soul:

Whisky has been distilled at Highland Park in Kirkwall, Orkney since 1798. Founder Magnus Eunson, was a direct descendant of Vikings who settled in Orkney over 1,000 years ago. A butcher and church officer by day and a bootlegger and smuggler by night, he set up an illegal whisky-making operation at a little bothy (a stone hut) at High Park, overlooking Kirkwall.

It is still the site of the distillery today and although we say Highland Park was founded in 1798, that’s actually the year the authorities finally caught up with Magnus.

Highland Park is made today, just as it was in 1798, using five keystones of production, aromatic peat, hand turned floor maltings, sherry oak casks, cool maturation and cask harmonisation. No other distillery uses all five keystones; so no other whisky tastes like Highland Park.

Few trees survive the gale-force winds on Orkney, this makes the island peat woodless and rich in heather. This helps create the trademark Highland Park flavour profile of aromatic smoky peat and sweet heather honey.

About Colin Dale:

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to a Scandinavian father and artisan mother, Colin now lives in Copenhagen where he is the owner of Skin & Bone tattoo studio. The studio provides a meeting place to share experiences and to have the opportunity to work alongside other ethnographic artists and tattooists from all over the world.

His fascination with tattooing began as a Fine Art student and, over the years, he has explored the traditional designs, symbolism and techniques of cultures around the world.

Sullivans Cove ~ American Oak – Including Our *Oldest Release To Date* – Tasmanian Whisky News

SCW1

Available now are two different casks of our American Oak expression: one 12 year old and one Old & Rare 18 year old  – the oldest whisky ever released by Sullivans Cove.

American Oak is our most awarded style, the first Australian whisky to receive Liquid Gold Status in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible and the only Australian whisky to ever be awarded “Best Single Cask Single Malt” at the World Whiskies Awards. Aged in 200L American oak ex-bourbon barrels, every small bottling reflects the unique characteristics of each individual cask.

Our American Oak bottlings are generally aged between 10-12 years and are a brilliant showcase of Tasmanian barley, with notes of bright grain and fruit as well as soft oak, vanilla and caramel.

But on rare occasions, our skilled distillers also identify a cask with the specific characteristics that lend to extended maturation. These Old & Rare casks are aged for a minimum of 16 years, and express incredible texture and complexity as well as surprising freshness given their age.

Today’s release gives you the opportunity to try either or both of these iconic Australian whiskies.

Wolfburn Laydown New release – Small Batch 375

The first quarter of 2019 has shot past in a flash – and as always it has been a hugely busy time at the distillery. Our third apprentice, Max, started in January – perfect timing, as we’ve been dispatching bottles to every corner of the world ever since he joined.

Morven has now overtaken Northland as our biggest selling expression – and it’s just scored a Double Gold Medal in the FiftyBest competition! Langskip – which has proved hugely popular since its launch in September – came close behind with a Gold Medal of its own.

In the immediate future you’ll see our third small-batch release, Batch 375, hit the shelves. More on that here. Looking ahead to May, Wolfburn is one of eight distilleries taking part in the inaugural Highland Whisky Festival. Commencing on Friday 10th May, visitors to Wolfburn will be able to buy a bottle specially created for the Festival.

Further ahead, readers in the Caithness area this August can expect another special release for the Mey Highland Games. And there’ll be the fifth release in the Kylver collectors’ series shortly afterwards too.

In the meantime, allow us sign off with these wise words: “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough!”

Slàinte!
