Jura; capturing the power of time and tide – Scotch Whisky News

Time and Tide (002)

Jura; capturing the power of time and tide

As the saying goes, time and tide waits for no man, a fact particularly pertinent when considering the remote wilderness and location of the Isle of Jura. Now we have captured this inspiration to create Jura Time and Jura Tide – two single malts, each aged for 21 Years, telling the story of our tiny island home.

Beginning with a reflection of time, Jura Time 21 Years Old claims its power, from losing track of time in the vast wilderness of the island to the whisky in our casks as they mature over time, this is a whisky embracing time fully.  With a character reminiscent of driftwood embers on the shores of Jura due to time spent in ex-peated malt casks, Jura Time offers an enticing sensory journey.

From aromas of honeyed chocolate, coffee mousse and soft, creamy toffee opening up to hints of lemon curd, lime marmalade and ginger cake with a whisper of salted peat smoke before making way to fig syrup and tropical fruit salad, Jura Time has been created exclusively for global travelers as they venture on their own journey of time.

In a further homage to its island home, Jura Tide 21 Years Old takes its inspiration from the sandy shores that are lapped by the tide of the East Coast. A single malt whisky with character as sweet as the sweeping beaches of Jura, but with a definitively spicy depth.  From the lively fusion of lemon cake, ginger and creamy caramel to flavours of macaroon, all-spice and gingerbread which give way to frangipane, marzipan and white chocolate, this is a warming whisky with many hidden treasures. Jura Tide 21 Years Old has, this month been awarded a Double Gold at the 2019 ISC awards, the most authoritative, respected and influential spirits competition in the world; the accolade is testament to the quality of this aged whisky.

Released annually in limited quantities, each bottle bears its year of bottling and is encased in a unique sandblasted bottle, mimicking the effect that the sea has on glass, and is held in an eye-catching presentation box, perfect for gifting and collecting alike.

Jura Tide will be stocked in key domestic retailers at an RSP of £150 whilst Jura Time will only be available via selective global travel retailers with an RSP of £150.

NOTES

About Jura:

Jura is a tiny Scottish island nestled off the West Coast of Scotland. With only one road, one pub, one distillery and 212(ish) people, Jura is as beautiful as it is remote.

The distillery was established in 1810 and reborn in 1963 to revive the community.

Inspired by our history and our island home, we create single malt with a true passion for the craft of whisky making.

Springbank 22 Year Old “Sovereign Wax Top – K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel Cask Strength – Scotch Whisky News

Springbank1

Springbank 22 Year Old “Sovereign Wax Top – K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival)

$399.99 View

We had an exceptional cask of Springbank last year that sold out after almost no effort on our part. We only received 78 bottles from that cask because it had supposedly been split with another market. As it turns out, we might have found the rest of that cask. The supplier is unable to confirm if this is the rest of the cask that we didn’t get last year or if in fact it is a sister cask. Again we’ve only been allocated a tiny amount (108 bottles) and the proof is slightly lower by one tenth of one percent. If it is indeed the same juice, it certainly is not the same bottle. Last year’s came in the Hunter Laing Old & Rare packaging while this year’s is bottled under the Sovereign line with a handsome wax top to indicate it’s of a different caliber than most Sovereign bottlings. Regardless of the cagey back story, this stupendous example of Scotland’s most (read ONLY) old-style distillery is a true wonder. The distillery releases a 21-year-old at 46% which easily fetches $400, but never achieves quite what these single casks can deliver. There’s no question that these old Springers are expensive, but in context their quality, scarcity and the enormous amount of care and energy that go into producing this whisky means that it should be considered by all who care to be the very most valuable commodity in the whisky drinking world. We certainly think it’s worth every penny we’re charging and maybe much more.

Barrell Bourbon “K&L Exclusive” 14 Year Old Cask Strength Single Barrel #E522 – Bourbon Whiskey News

kl_logo_trans

Barrell Bourbon “K&L Exclusive” 14 Year Old Cask Strength Single Barrel #E522 Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

$109.99 View

Barrell has firmly established themselves as the premier independent bottler of American spirits. It’s casks like this one that showcase how they did it. While there is a plethora of aged Tennessee whiskey on the market at the moment, there is certainly an enormous variation in the quality of those casks. Careful selection by Barrell and a subsequent selection by us at K&L has led to this beauty being bottled. At 14 years old it really shows its age in all the best ways. It’s dark and spicy without being overly tannic. The sweet brown sugars have caramelized perfectly into a robust and complex whisky expressing notes of chocolate, citrus, and a lively herbacous note to be savored. Clocking in at nearly 108 proof it’s a powerful whiskey, but not overly hot. (-Andrew Whiteley, K&L Spirits Buyer).

K&L Exclusives from Old Malt Cask—Single Malt Rarities at Unbelievable Prices

Exceptional Casks at Remarkable Prices

Last week, we offered five of the rarest most expensive casks you’ll see from K&L this year. We’ve decided to start offering single malt on pre-arrival again, because it offers our best customers an opportunity to take advantage of lower prices while letting them secure the products they know they’ll want later this year. We started selling single malt in advance of its arrival nearly a decade ago, but back then no one knew that we were building the country’s premier single cask whisky program. Now the true connoisseurs agree that K&L is the ONLY place to consider when buying independently selected single malt scotch. We’ve built that reputation on years of selecting exceptional casks and offering them to customers at incredible prices, and there’s absolutely no better way to buy these incredible malts than before they’ve left Scotland. Not only are you getting a better price than you’ll be offered come fall, you’re also making sure you don’t miss out on some of the most incredible casks of the year. Today’s offer is all about value. It’s a bevy of high-quality, Speyside blue-chip malts all WELL below market prices. If you compare these casks to great offerings from years before, you’ll notice a trend that’s almost unheard of in Scotland – PRICES ARE LOWER! At no time in our history of selling single malts have we managed to negotiate such advantageous terms as those we’ve acquired here—you are the beneficiary of that work. Take advantage now or pay MORE in the fall.

Mortlach 9 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($49.99)These products are expected to arrive for shipment or pickup by September 2019.

Nobody ever believes us when we find delicious young Mortlach. Everyone wishes it was heavily sherried and 30 years old, but they can’t all be beasts. This special whisky is no less impressive than one of its older siblings just for different reasons. The wonderful distillery on edge of Dufftown is one of the few that we haven’t yet been allowed to visit. Their recent release of some proper single malt in a relatively affordable price point is one of the most successful new offerings from Diageo and a complete reversal from the dismal attempt they made to over-premiumize the distillery a few years ago. That said, there’s no one who questions the inherent quality of the top notch spirit coming out of Mortlach. We’re always looking to offer something from them, young or old, because we know that no matter who picks it up, there’s a great chance they’ll enjoy it. The beefy, almost savory style isn’t simply the result the distillery’s predilection for Sherry barrels, but the result of an unusual distillation schema equating to 2.81 distillations. We usually expect more distillation to offer a softer smooth product, but in this case the odd mixture of distilled heads and tails blended offers something far from expected. Never a slouch even if not coupled with the Sherry it loves so well, this gorgeous cask offers you the true nature of this wild distillate on full display. A relatively active hoggie does little to tame the beast within. Bottled at 57.8%, add a bit of water.

Longmorn 14 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($59.99)

I’ve never really understood Longmorn. It’s an absolutely top notch distillery, well-regarded by critics and consumers alike, that seems to have absolutely no presence on the whisky stage at all. Sure the owners put out a passable 16-year offering that could cost you more than $140 a bottle, but they don’t seem to make much of an attempt to sell it to anyone. Understand, that every drop diverted to the single malt program is another drop not going into the Chivas blends, which are of course far more lucrative from a profit standpoint, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt either brand to put a little more effort into reestablishing this malt as one of the top names in Scotland. Most of what anyone knows about Longmorn is known through independent bottlers, in particular Gordon & Macphail. In fact, we don’t see tons of this stuff on the market, but when we do we always stop to check it out. Due to the scarcity they tend to be rather expensive even in their youth, but this little cask has pushed back against that bias. And while Longmorn certainly has a propensity to be absolutely stunning at 25+ years of age, I’ve become completely enamored with this youthful style. At 14 years old in a relatively mild refill hoggie, the Longmorn’s true character comes out. Malty, sweet, clean, almost singing. This one is all about freshness and finesse, with the oak stuffed in the boot and the malt with both hands on the wheel. Don’t be shy about adding water here, as this one loves to swim.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 16, 2019

Utterly approachable and sublimely sippable is what you’ll find in this special Longmorn. The slightly shy debut here is just a ploy. The nose starts with subtle white and yellow fruits, flinty chenin blanc from Saumur, wet stones, and tea biscuits. On the palate, it’s like cotton candy sweet with a slight herbal tinge to keep it exciting. But one tiny splash of water and we’re in a whole different territory. Poire Williams eau-de-vie, premier cru chablis, persimmon, and yuzu peel. The sweetness has turned to pure weight on the palate. Almost chewy in texture, the pear continues but brings along honeysuckle, pepper, and licorice root. A tempting, teasing, subtle malt, that ultimately unveils itself to be a true beauty with some coaxing and kind words. Should be one of the best buys of the year.

Auchroisk 24 Year Old “Old Malt Cask” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($79.99)

We can wax poetic about the magnificence of the unsung distillery hidden off the road in between Craigellachie and Keith. But this bottling is simply a value proposition. There’s absolutely nothing on the market this old, this good and this cheap. Auchroisk is not a really well-known distillery, but our customers have been treated to some rather lovely versions over the years. In fact, we just recently bottled a 21-year-old that we thought to be pretty dainty, but the fact that this one is three years its senior and similarly priced made it a must-buy. Auchroisk is one of these ’70s workhorse distilleries built in an era when Scotch seemed unstoppable. Justerini & Brooks used this facility as vatting facility to consolidate malts from the Highlands before sending them south for final blending. The young distillery is quite attractive visually despite being designed for modern efficiency. But the name has been a sore spot for the owners, who can’t seem to make up their minds. They’re worried the non-Scots won’t be able to pronounce it and they’re right. Everyone gets it wrong. But that doesn’t make this whisky any less tasty. A phenomenal value is only worth it if the product delivers, and this fabulous cask definitely does. Vibrant, sleek, almost sexy, this malt punches way above its weight class. The only question now is how many you can fit in the bunker?

Amrut AATMA Indian Single Malt Whisky at Park Ave Liquor Shop – Indian Whisky News

PA2a

Amrut AATMA

Indian Single Malt Whisky

“Aatma is a Hindi word meaning “Soul” or “Spirit” which we thought was an appropriate name for a Single Cask offering, as it reflects the soul of the whisky. It is non-chill filtered, and has no color added. This will be a collector’s portfolio whisky. This seven year old whisky is rare. The climate for whisky aged in Bangalore, India equates to whisky from Scotland that is more than 3 times the actual age, so the taste profile is similar to a 21 year old or greater.”
