Scotch Malt Whisky Society “SUMMER SOLSTICE SELECTION” – Scotch Whisky News

This weekend marks the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, signalling the longest day of the year and inspiring a host of celebrations around the globe. Whether you’re dreaming of some Mediterranean sunshine, searching for beautiful summer flavours or enjoying a bit of solstice meditation, we’ve got something for you in our seven new bottlings, online this afternoon.

NOTES

We imagined walking through steep vineyards just before harvest and being taken by surprise when the heavens opened, before finding shelter in a wooden shack. While we waited, we unpacked an apple pie with raisins and walnuts as we opened a hip flask filled with apple schnapps. Diluted the rain stopped and the sun came out so we sat outside enjoying Victoria sponge cake, a cinnamon sweet apple turnover and pastries with a vanilla and fruit filling. Some then finished with an espresso coffee, others with lavender tea and we were all crunching away on almond biscotti biscuits – what a beautiful bizarre story!

Kavalan Solist “Sherry Cask” #S081223016A Cask Strength Single Barrel ~ Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky News

Kavalan Solist “Sherry Cask” #S081223016A Cask Strength Single Barrel Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $210)

$159.99

Another cask of Kavalan lost in a warehouse only to be uncovered nearly a half decade years after it was bottled. Last time we found a Solist sherry from years ago sitting in the importers warehouse it sold out in no time at the regular price of $210. Now, it’s a new world and a new price. We don’t expect future offerings to be discounted and had we had the chance to purchase this at full price, we certainly would have. For whatever reason, we’re now able to sell this cask for a significant discount. A little gift from the booze fairy. As with all Kavalan Sherry, this whisky is a bruiser. A big powerful nose of dark molasses, cherry compote and cured meat. The palate is surprisingly soft and unusually open, there’s still plenty of richness and power even though it doesn’t have the tannic gripe of some other barrels. The heat is also not as present as some other barrels we’ve had. Bold, rich and round, it’s no wonder Kavalan has become one of the world’s leading distillers of single malt. Their prowess is on full display here. Only 234 bottles available. This should arrive before the end of July. **DISCLAIMER: As with all “Solist” line Kavalan bottlings for the US market, the labels do not contain the word “Solist,” due to trademark reasons.

STEVE MCCURRY CAPTURES THE MACALLAN’S EXTRAORDINARY WOOD JOURNEY – Scotch Whisky News

STEVE MCCURRY CAPTURES THE MACALLAN’S EXTRAORDINARY WOOD JOURNEY

Spanning two continents and thousands of miles, the incredible wood journey undertaken to create The Macallan’s hand-crafted, sherry seasoned oak casks has been chronicled in extraordinary new detail by iconic Magnum photographer Steve McCurry.

His exclusive photographic journal, which is revealed in full for the first time, showcases the people, places and processes involved in the production of The Macallan’s exceptional oaks casks.

Crafted to unique specifications, The Macallan’s oak casks are the single greatest contributor to the outstanding quality, natural colour and distinctive aromas and flavours of The Macallan’s peerless single malts.

The images also provide a compelling new insight into the mastery of wood and spirit for which The Macallan has been renowned since 1824.

Steve McCurry said: “The thing I admire about The Macallan is their passion for craftsmanship, their excellence and their integrity for their processes.

“Sometimes you have to choose a different path – the one less taken – to go beyond hardship, to reach excellence.”

Firstly, the photographer, recognised as one of today’s finest image makers and synonymous with evocative colour photography, made the trip to the vast green forests of Northern Spain, the source of European oak for The Macallan casks. Then he journeyed to Jerez, Southern Spain where The Macallan’s casks are hand-crafted and seasoned with sherry – one of The Macallan’s defining strengths.

McCurry also travelled to Pennsylvania to discover the influence of American oak.  Grown in the lush forests in the North East of the US, it is key to the unique flavour of The Macallan’s highly successful Double Cask range that balances both American and European sherry seasoned oak casks. After leaving America, these casks are also shipped to Jerez to be crafted into casks and filled with sherry, using the same traditional processes applied to the European oak.

When fully seasoned, each cask is transported to The Macallan Estate home to the award-winning Distillery on Speyside. It is then filled with the finest quality, new make spirit ready to be matured under the watchful eye of The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team.

As well as evoking the sights, sounds and even the smells of the forests where the oak trees that form The Macallan’s casks are grown, McCurry also reveals the mastery and commitment of those who craft The Macallan’s casks, including the coopers – professional cask makers – who spend many years learning and perfecting their art.

Stuart MacPherson, Master of Wood, The Macallan, said: “Steve McCurry is one of the world’s greatest documentary photographers and we are privileged that he has expertly captured The Macallan’s wood story through his incredible lens.

“Our people and their craftsmanship have defined The Macallan for almost 200 years and Steve’s outstanding images provide a unique insight into the intensive process of sourcing, crafting and seasoning our exceptional oak casks.

“With up to 80% of The Macallan’s final flavour and character determined by cask quality, Steve has recorded the painstaking commitment and attention to detail that we uphold to deliver the uncompromised excellence that lies at the heart of our brand.”

Steve McCurry’s interpretation of The Macallan’s wood journey is his latest partnership with The Macallan. It follows his previous work with the brand to document the build of The Macallan Distillery, alongside fellow Magnum photographers, in 2018.

About The Macallan

Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the world’s most admired and awarded single malt whiskies. The reputation of The Macallan is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character. An obsession with excellence has been the hallmark of The Macallan since its founding, by Alexander Reid, on a plateau above the river Spey in north-east Scotland.

In 2018, The Macallan unveiled its new £140 million distillery and visitor experience on its Speyside estate, increasing investment in whisky, warehousing and in The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks.  The striking contemporary architecture, cut into the slope of the land, takes its cues from ancient Scottish hills.  It stands nearby Easter Elchies House, the Highland Manor built in 1700 which has been The Macallan’s spiritual home since 1824.  The new distillery marks an important milestone, recognising the significant journey of The Macallan since 1824 and marking an exciting new chapter in the evolution of the luxury single malt.

About Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than 30 years, with scores of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books, and countless exhibitions around the world to his name.

Born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; McCurry studied film at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a local newspaper. After several years of freelance work, McCurry made his first of what would become many trips to India.

Travelling with little more than a bag of clothes and another of film, he made his way across the subcontinent, exploring the country with his camera. McCurry brought the world the first images of the conflict in Afghanistan, putting a human face to the issue on every masthead. His work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture alike – yet always retains the human element that made his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl so powerful.

He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1986. McCurry has been recognised with some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, National Press Photographers Award, and an unprecedented four first prize awards from the World Press Photo contest, to name but a few.

The Full Ardbeg Experience at a Wallet-Friendly Price at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

The Full Ardbeg Experience at a Wallet-Friendly Price
Ardbeg 5 Year Old “Wee Beastie”
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
($44.99)

NOTE: In accordance with local directives, our walk-in retail locations are currently closed. We have curbside pickup and low cost (often free) delivery options available in ZIP codes where we can ship lawfully, including anywhere in California. We can also include any new or existing will call orders in your delivery batch. Choose local delivery at checkout to learn if you qualify.

You’d never expect the powerful punch the “Wee Beastie” packs based on its modest age statement. But then, we are talking about Ardbeg, so smoke, peat, and potency are the name of the game. Raised in ex-bourbon and oloroso barrels, this dashing dram from Islay’s most celebrated distillery offers a tantalizing spectrum of flavors both expected and unexpected. There are, of course, the signature elements of smoke and peat, but with a splash of branch, it unveils a whirl of pine, java, orchard fruits, Vanille de Madagascar, Tellicherry peppercorns, and so much more. It’s downright astounding all that this modest 5-year-old serves up. Because of Ardbeg’s international renown, its bottlings often command a princely sum—not so with the Wee Beastie. Priced at $44.99, you can experience all of Ardbeg’s magnificence and stay well within a budget. If smoked cocktails are in your regular repertoire, then this is a must-have for your bar. We couldn’t be happier that Ardbeg has included this impressive single malt in their permanent portfolio. As with all things Ardbeg, we expect our allocation to run out before then next one arrives. So don’t delay in making the Wee Beastie your own.

Ardbeg 5 Year Old “Wee Beastie” Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($44.99)

The famous distillery at the end of the road on Islay’s south shore has just released this monster of a dram, its youngest, smokiest permanent release to date. The Wee Beastie is designed specifically with smokey cocktails in mind, but that won’t stop all the Ardbeg lovers from drinking it neat and if you’re one of the lucky lovers of this little distillery on the rock above the bay, you’ll no doubt devour this raw and unabashed new offering right up. This bad boy is aged in a mixture of ex-bourbon barrels and oloroso sherry casks for just 5 years, but takes much bigger bites than expected. A great balance of power and freshness, the distillery describes it as, “In the nose: Very shiny, fresh and herbal, with a hint of vanilla, pear, black pepper, freshly ground, and glazed ham. Strong Turkish coffee, juicy pine resin. With a little water, more herbal notes such as vetiver grass, fennel and anise, green apple and leather. On the palate: Powerful, explosively filling with lots of chocolate, tar, creosote tar oil and smoked bacon, followed by an eruption of antiseptic lozenges, eucalyptus and more anise. Finish: A long, salty and palatable finish with notes of cocoa, fudge butter caramel and hearty meat.”

Douglas Laing Unveils The Epicurean Cask Strength Edinburgh Edition – Scotch Whisky News

Douglas Laing Unveils The Epicurean Cask Strength Edinburgh Edition

Independent Scotch Whisky firm, Douglas Laing & Co today unveils The Epicurean Cask Strength Edinburgh Limited Edition of only 600 bottles.

Honouring Scotland’s Capital, the unique “recipe” for the special bottling is the result of a creative collaboration between Douglas Laing & Co and some of Edinburgh’s finest bartenders and spirit experts. A one-off event was held at leading bar “Nauticus” in Edinburgh, during which the VIP attendees masterfully married together various samples of Single Cask Single Malt Whiskies from the Lowlands with the aim of creating a perfectly balanced end product with depth and character. Each unique blend of Single Malts was then judged with the winning recipe becoming this limited edition release of just 600 bottles. A blind tasting by Douglas Laing’s Chairman, Fred Laing, saw Lindsay Blair of 56 North crowned the winner.

The resulting Whisky is said to burst with lively green fruits, sweet barley and tangy citrus with just a touch of spice. Bottled at 53.3% alcohol strength and offered without colouring or chill-filtration, its high strength is said to ensure the natural robust character of the capital city spirit shines through – even when mixed.

Cara Laing, Director of Whisky, comments on the new release:

“The Epicurean’s Cask Strength Edinburgh Edition celebrates our Capital City and its impressive array of bars and spirit experts. With summer just around the corner, this is perfect timing to release this fresh and zesty Lowland Malt. We’d recommend enjoying it straight-up or long with ginger ale or apple juice to further enhance those tangy, slightly spicy sweet flavours.”

The Epicurean Cask Strength Edinburgh Edition is available from June 2020, from specialist Whisky retailers with an expected retail price of £49.99.

Stalk & Barrel

Three Barrel Whisky

It’s been a decade since lineups snaked through the parking lot at Still Waters distillery. Ontario’s first modern-age microdistillery was releasing its inaugural single malt whisky.

Rye soon followed, then their carefully crafted Blue- and Red-labelled blends. Now, distillers Barry Bernstein and Barry Stein have added Stalk & Barrel Three Barrel Whisky to the line-up.

Three Barrel blends Still Waters’ rye and single malt with traditional corn whisky, each aged separately in ex-bourbon casks.

“The single malt adds complexity and robustness to our blends,” says Bernstein, “and we can now afford to use more of it, given our increased inventory. “We thought there was more room to play at this end of the range with bumping up the rye and malt components.”

Three Barrels is blended in batches of less than 1,000 litres at a time. The whisky’s age has polished those familiar young grassy rye notes into chest-warming spices and cloves while the barley malt shines with creamy vanillas, barley sugar, chocolate covered almonds, cocoa and a splash of citrus.

As Still Waters enters its second decade, Three Barrel Whisky ushers in a new age for the distillery, as it builds on an already well respected portfolio of whiskies.

The Forager

Forty Creek Botanical Whisky

Innovation does not always mean new – by tradition, most whisky once had herbs and spices added. But innovation does mean going against the grain, and today adding such things to your whisky is a pretty bold move. But then, Forty Creek Master Blender, Bill Ashburn is no shrinking violet.

A new Forty Creek whisky, labelled The Forager, and without the Forty Creek logo, reveals a surging twister of whisky and botanical flavours. It seems Ashburn has infused gentle portions of sweet fern, spruce tips, juniper and Labrador tea into Forty Creek whisky.

Their subtle flavours contrast with the distillery’s trademark fruit, underscoring hints of citrus, medicinal pine resin and a refreshing, slightly bitter, herbaceous top dressing.

It is great whisky, for sure, and like all innovations, The Forager, challenges the status quo.

For The Bourbon Fan

Cream of Kentucky Bourbon 13 Y.O.

The Cream of Kentucky brand that was very popular in the mid-thirties and forties with the added distinction of labels designed  by Norman Rockwell. When Jim Rutledge retired after  20 years as the master distiller of Four Roses, he decided that he wanted to do his own thing and purchased the rights to the brand.

Four Roses had been  sold only in Asia, but Jim made it iconic, first in Kentucky and then nationally.

To do the same thing with Cream of Kentucky., he knew he needed a flavor profile with a mellow mouth feel and a long and very smooth finish. He found one that is a winner. It has that nice creamy mouthfeel with gentle fruitiness a hint caramel and vanilla, plus some soft woody characters.

This wonderful 13 Y.O. is limited and will not be around for long. It is a winner from a man  who  strives to put great product in the bottle. What can a bourbon drinker enjoy more than a wonderful Bourbon, knowing that the bottle purchased, profits will be going towards a very eco friendly distillery that will produce great bourbon and Rye, that Jim Rutledge will own.

Cream of Kentucky 13 Y.O. Batch 4  51% $159.99

And if he prefers fine, rare  malts….

Bruichladdich Black Art 7.1 25 Y.O. 48.4%

Jim McEwan felt that blending is a black art, so he saved the best of his magic for the small batch Bruichladdich Black Art Series

We have never been able to get as much Black Art as we wanted and only got a few bottles of this edition because a couple of elite restaurants had to give it up. It’s a great whisky with depth that evolves and goes on and on. Adam Hartnett has continued what Jim started and I feel Jim would be very happy with the impeccable blending of those special casks.

Nose: Rich marzipan, then walnut, creme caramel, hints of strawberry, violet and coconut. There is a heavy fruit style with plum, poached pears, raisin and grapefruit and after opening further wood spice, nutmeg, toasted oak, roasted coffee beans and muscovado sugar. An absolute delight to the nose

Palate: A little sharpness is a nod to the strength but quickly the satin texture covers the palate to give a viscous, round mouthfeel. Oak oak power and poise gives a hint of dryness but also waves of coconut, turkish delight, soft caramel, and spiced orange. The layers of oak that come through softly melt into one another, each sip brings a new level of discovery within this most complex of assemblages. While on the palate there appears less complexity than on the nose, an important balance, texture and defined style serves to highlight the aromatic quality of this whisky.

Finish: It seems as if it goes on forever, the incredible viscous texture of this whisky extends the finish and it lingers on the palate. Roasted nuts, then tropical fruits, pineapple and butterscotch give a sweetness that is sure to be remembered. Mood: As ever the mystery of its creation serves to intrigue. Black Art 7.1 gives a moment to reflect on the past and to welcome the possibilities of the future.

Black Art 7.1 – 25 Y.O. 48.4% $450 Very, very limited

Tomatin 30 Y.O.

Last of a Great Deal

We hope that patience is a virtue, because we waited a long time for this one. In these uncertain times we have just the thing to put a little balance on this situation, a Thirty Y.O. Highland that was matured in a combination of ex- bourbon casks and traditional oak casks at a great price.

The Tomatin 30-Year-Old delivers fresh aromas of soft fruits, golden honey and smooth white chocolate. On the palate, it’s a fusion of tropical fruits and creamy buttered vanilla mingle in an explosion of sensational mixed spices

This single malt hits your palate with a full mouthfeel and your taste buds will be doing a dance. Balanced and in great harmony, its grace and elegance justify its price. It comes in its own wooden presentation case and leatherette carry pouch. That only enhances as a special gift that you could give to your father or  yourself. Crazy times make for crazy prices We got a great deal on this Jim Murray recommended gem. Only 600 bottles came into the country. Just a few bottles are left. This is great value, take a look at the price of 30 Y.O. single malts.
