REDBREAST LAUNCHES LIMITED-EDITION BIRD FEEDER IN TIME FOR WINTER – Irish Whiskey News

REDBREAST LAUNCHES LIMITED-EDITION BIRD FEEDER IN TIME

FOR WINTER

RAISING FUNDS TO SUPPORT BIRDLIFE INTERNATIONAL*

Redbreast Irish Whiskey is today launching a limited-edition copper whiskey casing that neatly transforms into a beautiful bird feeder. Following the launch of a partnership with BirdLife International earlier this year, €15 for every limited-edition Redbreast 12 Year Old purchased will be donated to support Redbreast’s and BirdLife International’s joint mission to keep common birds common.

Available from the Redbreast website for €60 (£50), the intricately designed shell sits around a bottle of Redbreast 12-Year-Old, the world’s bestselling and most awarded single pot still Irish whiskey. Once removed from the bottle, the casing can be filled with bird feed and hung in the garden to keep our feathery friends fed as the weather gets colder, protecting common species from becoming endangered. The bird feeder enables whiskey fans to sit back and enjoy a warming drink in the comfort of their own home while watching nature fly by.

“After much anticipation, we are extremely excited to launch the beautifully crafted whiskey casing that has been specially designed to double up as a bird feeder. We worked closely with BirdLife International to ensure the bird feeder honours our mission of helping to protect not only Robins, but all common birds, as we move into the colder months and food begins to become scarce. We are thrilled to provide this at no additional cost to Redbreast fans across the globe and simultaneously further support the work of BirdLife International by donating €15 for each limited edition bottle sold”, explains Laura Hanratty, Head of Prestige and Speciality Brands at Irish Distillers.

With winter fast approaching and at least 40% of all bird species in decline, Redbreast and BirdLife International’s partnership aims to give whiskey lovers the tools they need to help take care of their local birds. The partnership will also raise vital funds to conserve and restore bird habitats and help encourage whiskey-lovers to monitor bird populations so that deeper environmental problems (and successes) can be rapidly identified.

Patricia Zurita, CEO, BirdLife International, shared her thoughts on the new product, “Not only is the whiskey casing beautiful, it will also help support our feathered friends throughout the cold winter by providing them with a valuable source of food. Whether they’re garden birds or migratory birds passing through, all species will benefit from this, not just Robin Redbreasts. This bird feeder will also spread awareness of the simple, yet important, things we can all do to help protect birds whilst also raising vital funds.”

BirdLife International is widely recognised as the world leader in bird conservation, with the charity and its 10 million members and supporters doing all they can to reverse the trend and protect birds. The charity has 100 BirdLife Partners worldwide that strive to conserve birds, habitats and global diversity, as well as working with people and organisations to promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

To find out more about the bird feeder and the partnership between Redbreast Irish Whiskey and BirdLife International, please visit www.redbreastwhiskey.com or www.birdlife.org.

The limited edition Redbreast 12 Year Old with copper bird feeder casing is available to pre-order now from https://www.redbreastwhiskey.com/en-EN/project-wingman at the price of €60 (£50) and will ship in December.

Gordon & MacPhail release film serialisation to mark 125th Anniversary

A series of five short films showcasing behind-the-scenes insights into whisky creator Gordon & MacPhail has been released to mark the company’s 125th birthday.

The five ‘Chapters’, each around five minutes long, include reflections from influential figures who have played an important role in shaping Gordon & MacPhail’s approach and philosophy, along with appearances from those within the company – past and present.

Each film shares anecdotes from some of Gordon & MacPhail’s partners, collaborators and friends, including Simon Cotton of Johnstons of Elgin, whisky writer Charlie Maclean, Helen Brocklebank of Walpole and Ryder Cup golfer Stephen Gallacher, among many others.

The Chapters also tap into Gordon & MacPhail’s unique knowledge and experience of the industry by exploring what drives desire for rare whiskies and whether the idea of leaving a legacy is still important in modern times.

Stephen Rankin, Gordon & MacPhail’s Director of Prestige said: “In our anniversary year, the ‘Chapters’ series gives the viewer behind the scenes access to our 125 years in the industry, as told by those who know us best.”

The Chapters films are available to view at www.gordonandmacphail.com/chapters, in the following order:

  • Chapter 1 – The Value of Values
  • Chapter 2 – The Benefits of the Path Less Travelled
  • Chapter 3 – The Science of Desire
  • Chapter 4 – Whisky Whisperers
  • Chapter 5 – Creating Future Legacies

The short films add to Gordon & MacPhail’s wider 125th year celebrations, including the launch of four ultra-rare commemorative whiskies from lost or closed distilleries – the final of which will be revealed in early December.

Whyte & Mackay goes the extra mile (or 50,000 miles!) – Scotch Whisky News

Whyte & Mackay goes the extra mile (or 50,000 miles!) to raise

£114,841 for mental health charities

Employees at Glasgow based Whyte & Mackay have completed a mammoth virtual adventure taking them around the world twice in aid of mental health charities.

A team of 200 employees walked, ran, rowed or cycled, totting up enough miles to go around the world twice. The challenge started in July with the initial goal to travel around the world only once. This week (6 October) the epic challenge drew to a close after the team clocked up 50,000 miles.

The challenge – Whyte & Mackay Cares – was inspired by the feats of Sir Captain Tom Moore, and has raised £114,841 for mental health charities around the world nominated by the team.

Employees based in Canada, USA, Mexico, Taiwan, Hong Kong, UAE, South Africa, Germany, France, Spain and Russia took part in the challenge alongside their UK-based colleagues to raise money for charity and support their colleagues through a challenging and uncertain time for everyone.

Nick Garland, for Whyte & Mackay said: “We’re incredibly proud of the team and pleased with the total fundraising figure from Whyte & Mackay Cares.

“The challenge came about as a way to bring the team together virtually and encourage people to stay physically and mentally healthy during a very uncertain time.

“Charities like SAMH have been providing vital support to people who have been struggling and we are delighted to go some way in helping this continue.”

Jo Anderson, Director of External Affairs at SAMH, said: “Lockdown and beyond has been such a difficult time for most, and for many people it has exacerbated challenges that they were already facing.

“We’d like to thank the whole team at Whyte & Mackay for their incredible fundraising efforts: they will really help us to continue to provide support to those in our communities who need it.”

To mark the end of the challenge and on the week of World Mental Health Day, the team at Whyte & Mackay had a virtual event to bring everyone together and hand the cheque of £93,632 over to Billy Watson, Chief Executive at SAMH.

SAMH has a dedicated Coronavirus mental health information hub for anyone looking for help or support during the pandemic, which can be found on its website – https://www.samh.org.uk/coronavirus

Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin Unveil First Collaboration with Introduction of BLACK BOWMORE® DB5 1964 – Scotch Whisky News

Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aston Martin Unveil First Collaboration with Introduction of

BLACK BOWMORE® DB5 1964

1964 Provides Inspiration to Showcase Craftsmanship and Innovation

to Unite Bowmore and Aston Martin

Islay, Scotland (November 20, 2020) Bowmore®, the oldest licensed distillery on Scotland’s isle of Islay, and Aston Martin have unveiled their first collaborative creation: Black Bowmore DB5 1964.  This striking concept brings together an iconic whisky and a legendary car in a bottle of equal parts, featuring exceptional single malt and a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.

With only 25 bottles for sale, this exceptionally rare 31-Year-Old Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is a celebration of time and a definitive moment in history for both Bowmore and Aston Martin. It is also a celebration of shared values and passions, as it showcases great innovation and invention.

A beautifully inspiring masterpiece, this unique, handcrafted vessel houses an equally exceptional Black Bowmore single malt. The significance of 1964 is paramount, as it represents a truly defining era of evolution for both Bowmore and Aston Martin.

For Bowmore, 1964 is arguably one of the most significant points in the distillery’s 240-year history. The arrival of a new boiler allowed the distillery to enter the modern age of distilling, as coal fires made way for steam in heating the stills. It was the first distillation from this new boiler that produced the spirit which was to become the iconic Black Bowmore, a sublimely rich and decadent single malt reflected in awe-inspiring deep darkness.

First distilled on November 5, 1964, Black Bowmore has become one of the rarest and most sought-after single malt whiskies ever created. This latest release represents only the sixth bottling of this exquisite single malt. Since 1993, there have only been approximately six thousand bottles of Black Bowmore made available, thus adding to the desirability of this iconic whisky.

David Turner, Distillery Manager at Bowmore commented, “1964 represents a significant date in the modern history of the distillery. Not only a key moment in how we distilled our spirit, but perhaps even more significant as this very spirit went onto create Black Bowmore. These defining moments are fundamental to the history of Bowmore. This collaboration with Aston Martin has allowed us to once again showcase this iconic single malt in the most incredible way.”

For Aston Martin, this was the era of their most iconic car. Launched in 1963 to considerable acclaim, the Aston Martin DB5 is now widely regarded as ‘the most famous car in the world’, not least by virtue of its links to the world’s most celebrated secret agent in 1964.

On its debut, the DB5 represented a subtle but important evolution over its immediate predecessor, the DB4 Series 5, not least by virtue of an increase in engine capacity to 4.0-litres. This of course made the DB5 that much more of a sporting saloon which, combined with its exceptional styling, helped it to become one of the most desirable and admired sports cars of its generation. Sir David Brown, the then owner of Aston Martin Lagonda and the man who gave his initials to the ‘DB’ lineage, said of the car: “I believe it is the essential character of the DB5, and its ability to perform perfectly in all conditions, that makes this car so intensely satisfying to own.” It is this relentless pursuit of power with purpose that still helps to define the appeal of Aston Martin today.

Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “This exciting new association with Bowmore gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate a vital part of our star-studded history by combining the unrivalled appeal of the iconic DB5 with the cultured flavours of this world-renowned single malt.”

In keeping with a commitment to true craftsmanship, the Black Bowmore DB5 bottle itself is handcrafted by Glasstorm, a bespoke contemporary glass studio, based in North East Scotland. With more than 50 years of glass design, sculpting and creative expertise, each bottle took up to one week to complete, reflecting the continued thread of attention to detail and skill which defines this collaboration.

Black Bowmore DB5 1964 is presented in a handmade presentation box, itself a work of art. Inspired by the distillery’s coastal home, the deep blue color and wave embossing evoke a true sense of place. Created from the finest string-grain calfskin, featuring a custom solid brass latch and hinges, plated with nickel, reflective of the DB5.

The partners are set to unveil a series of collaborative projects and products over the coming months and years, ranging from exceptional experiences to design-led product initiatives with the goal of offering fans of the brands, across a broad spectrum, the opportunities to connect with the partnership.

As world class luxury brands Bowmore and Aston Martin urge consumers never to drink and drive. Drink Smart® messaging will be integrated into all brand activations around the partnership; while the dedicated Drink Smart® platform ensures communication with legal-purchase age adults about making informed, responsible choices. https://www.drinksmart.com/reducing-drunk-driving-or-drink-driving

Black Bowmore DB5 1964 will be available from late Autumn 2020 with a suggested retail price of $65,000.

ABOUT BOWMORE

Founded in 1779, Bowmore® is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky.  The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands.  Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills honed over two centuries to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Time is savored at Bowmore and the distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore® Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Through peerless maturation expertise and sense of timing, Bowmore® is “Time, Savoured®” – a rich reward for those that appreciate the value of time and an exquisite whisky coveted the world over.

Bowmore USA domestic product range: Bowmore 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old.
