BOWMORE® ISLAY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY DEBUTS ANNUAL 30 YEAR OLD RELEASE – Scotch Whisky News

BOWMORE® ISLAY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY DEBUTS ANNUAL 30 YEAR OLD RELEASE

A Celebratory Spirit Definitively Shaped By Time From One Of The World’s Oldest Maturation Warehouses

Islay, Scotland (January 2021) – Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky has unveiled its first annual release 30 Year Old in celebration of how time shapes the exceptional Bowmore character and bringing a new aged expression to the global portfolio.

For more than 240 years, Bowmore Distillery has captured the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. This single malt harnesses the power of time in every single drop, which tells a story of the past that’s savored in the present. This a single malt defined, shaped and crafted by time.

Distilled in 1989, this rare single malt whisky has been carefully nurtured for three decades in Bowmore’s finest Sherry hogsheads and Bourbon barrels. It is matured in the legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults, one of the world’s oldest maturation warehouses. Selected from just two casks each year, this is an exceptional single malt that embodies the last thirty years at the very core of its character.

Bottled at a cask strength of 45.3% alcohol by volume, this 30 Year Old is a celebration of Bowmore’s rich fruity and subtly smoky style. With a burnished gold natural color, this whisky offers up aromas of heather, bananas, peaches, pineapple, vanilla and butterscotch. While on the palate, tropical fruits and honey sweetness unite with subtle peat smoke and hints of eucalyptus, ensuring a warming and lingering finish.

“By adding an ongoing 30 Year Old Bowmore to the portfolio, we are able to showcase how vital the length of time spent in casks shapes and influences our spirit, making it even more exceptional and full of character,” said David Turner, Bowmore Distillery Manager. “Each annual release will tell the rich story of Bowmore, but importantly each will have their own unique style and character. As for this release, this is another perfect example of classic Bowmore but with boundless depth and intrigue reflecting the long standing interaction of spirit and wood.”

With only 2,580 bottles available globally as of late 2020, Bowmore 30-Year-Old is inspired by the terrain that surrounds the Bowmore Distillery and the legendary landscape that defines our whisky. Capturing the art of time, the bottle and box containing this whisky take cues from the detailed markings on driftwood and the refined polish of sea glass, reflecting its eternal connection with Islay.

Bowmore® 30-Year-Old is available from January 2021 with an SRP of $2,500 in the U.S.

Tasting notes: Bowmore 30-Year-Old – 45.3% ABV

COLOR: Burnished gold

NOSE: Heather honey, bananas and peaches, with pineapple, vanilla and butterscotch

TASTE: Tropical fruits with honey sweetness, subtle peat smoke and hints of eucalyptus

FINISH: Mouth warming, with ripe fruits lingering on the tongue

ABOUT BOWMORE

Founded in 1779, Bowmore® is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands.  Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills honed over two centuries to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Time is savored at Bowmore and the distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults, one of the world’s oldest maturation warehouses, is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavors until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore® Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Through peerless maturation expertise and sense of timing, Bowmore® is “Time, Savoured®” – a rich reward for those that appreciate the value of time and an exquisite whisky coveted the world over.

Bowmore USA domestic product range: Bowmore 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old.

Coleburn Distillery was built beside Colburn railway station which ensured a speedy connection to the southern whisky blenders. A FEW OF THE BEST DEALS

There are some phenomenal deals this weekend. For the list of everything discounted by 15-40% see the PDF linked below. But if you’ll indulge us, there are a few highlights we’ve showcased below!

Tomatin Contrast

This is a very interesting two half bottle release from Tomatin Distillery which shows the contrast between ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels and their influence on Scotch. The disitllery vatted whiskies from 4 decades, and then further matured it in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before bottling at 46%.

Was $210 – SAVE 35% – Now $136.49

Jura Seven Wood

Not content with double wood or triple wood, Jura has gone right to SEVEN WOOD with this bottling. Not just a made up golf club, the Jura Seven Wood Single Malt Scotch comes from the Jura distillery on – get this – the Isle of Jura. The Jura Seven Wood is composed mostly of unpeated Jura Single Malt plus a small portion of peated Jura as well. It is aged in a combination of American Oak ex-Bourbon barrels and SIX different French Oak Barrels. Bottled at 42%.

Was $122 – SAVE 35% – Now $79.29

Port Askaig 100 Proof

Port Askaig is a line of mystery Islay single malts. The whiskies are reputed to come from the Caol Ila distillery. The 100 Proof is a no age statement whisky bottled at 57.1% (100 British Proof). It is named for Islay’s ancient ferry and fishing port on the island’s north-east coast.

Was $80 – SAVE 25% – Now $59.99

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Year

The Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban recently evolved from a 12 year old, into a 14 Year. Matured initially in ex-Bourbon, the wine is finished in Port casks before bottling at 46%. This whisky is replete with notes of chocolate and orange, which is derived from its time finishing in port casks.

Was $97 – SAVE 25% – Now $72.74

Craigellachie 13 Year

Part of the Last Great Malts series from Bacardi/Dewar’s – this 13-year-old from Craigellachie Distillery is bottled at 46% ABV. This 13yr old along with the rest of the Craigellachie official prime-numbered lineup was introduced in 2014. The whisky was a hit in our 2020 KWM Whisky Calendar, and is very good value at $80/bottle. At 30% off it is a steal!

Was $80 – SAVE 30% – Now $55.99

Compass Box GKS Glasgow KWM Cask

Looking for something both sherried and peaty, this ticks both boxes, and it’s really elegant!

This is our third KWM exclusive Compass Box Blend, and it is one for the peat heads! It is also our second marrying cask from the Great King Street line – this time from the Glasgow Blend – which means it has a bit of sherry cask influence and a dash of peat or more as well! Bottled at 49%, the whisky is the 2018 Glasgow Blend, finished for just under 2 years in a second fill Sherry Butt from the Craigellachie Distillery.

Was $94 – SAVE 25% – Now $70.49

Talisker Port Ruighe

Double matured in port casks, this malt is a toast to the Scottish traders who braved the high seas and were instrumental in the foundation of the port wine trade. Port Ruighe, pronounced ‘Portree’ is the Gaelic spelling of the once-bustling trading port on Skye. The port finish combines Talisker’ s powerful maritime character with succulent sweet notes of rich berry fruits for a superb taste experience.

Was $120 – SAVE 30% – Now $83.99

Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or

This whisky was born from the memory of entering a pastry shop for the very first time. It’s about that first moment of finding your senses deliciously overwhelmed, breathing in the sweet scents and wishing you could take a bite of every creamy, flaky treat you see. In Nectar D’Or you can taste it all. To create it, we take the delicate, fruity spirit of our giraffe-high stills and age it in American oak bourbon casks along with casks that once held Sauternes sweet white wine.

Was $102 – SAVE 25% – Now $76.49

SMOS Caol Ila 8 Year KWM Cask

This may only be 15% off, but it has been one of the most popular whiskies over the first few days of the sale. That might be because this 8 year old sherry cask matured Caol Ila is already such a good deal, at just $85. It is big and bold but also balanced for a young malt tipping the scales at well over 60%. Lots of layers given its youth, with the sherry notes building over time to tame the brash young peat and smoke.

Selected by and bottled exclusively for KWM, this 2011 Sherry Butt (Cask 300161) of Caol Ila was bottled after 8 years at a cask strength of 61.2%.

Was $85 – SAVE 15% – Now $72.24

BALLANTINE’S LAUNCHES ‘BALLANTINE’S LIGHT’: HALF THE ALCOHOL BUT FULL OF FLAVOUR – Almost Whisky News

BALLANTINE’S LAUNCHES ‘BALLANTINE’S LIGHT’: HALF THE ALCOHOL BUT FULL OF FLAVOUR

Ballantine’s has unveiled Ballantine’s Light, its first ‘light’ expression and lower-ABV spirit drink with half the alcohol but the great depth of flavour that has made Ballantine’s the No.1 Scotch in Europe.

Launching exclusively in Spain from January 2021, Ballantine’s Light is a 20% ABV spirit drink for the growing number of spirit drinkers who want to cut down their alcohol consumption and drink more mindfully, without missing out on the social enjoyment of a drink shared with others[1].

Ballantine’s Light has been carefully crafted by the blending team led by Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, after months of experimentation with different whisky bases and additional flavours. The new spirit drink is specially designed to deliver on taste even at a lower ABV, with the result being a high-quality, lower-alcohol alternative with distinct citrussy aromas and all the depth of character of the Ballantine’s range.

Sandy Hyslop, our Master Blender, commented: “We wanted to offer Scotch fans an alternative, more mindful drinking option, and were inspired by our founder George Ballantine who, as early as 1827, was innovating and breaking conventional codes of whisky.

“Ballantine’s drinkers are known for their great taste, so we worked tirelessly to ensure that Ballantine’s Light would be light in nothing but alcohol. The result is a lower-ABV expression that is full of flavour – and unmistakeably Ballantine’s – and reaffirms our belief that there’s no wrong way to enjoy Ballantine’s”.

Ballantine’s Light offers the balanced fruity and floral notes typical of Ballantine’s signature style, but delivers fresher notes of juicy green apple, as well as a citrussy zing with aromas of pink grapefruit and orange zest. It is designed to be enjoyed in the same way as your full-strength Ballantine’s – whether neat, on the rocks, with a mixer or in a cocktail.

Ballantine’s Light is bottled at 20% ABV (at half the ABV of Ballantine’s Finest) and will be available exclusively in Spain from January 2021 at EUR 12,45.

For more information on Ballantine’s Light, visit www.ballantines.com

[1] The IWSR predicts the low-no alcohol trend will permanently disrupt the alcohol industry, as more consumers look for a more balanced lifestyle and mindful drinking choices

‘AGED AND CAGED’ 25 YEARS OLD BECOMES THE OLDEST ADDITION TO THE ARDBEG CORE RANGE – Scotch Whisky News

‘AGED AND CAGED’ 25 YEARS OLD BECOMES THE OLDEST ADDITION TO THE ARDBEG CORE RANGE

Islay Distillery releases old and rare expression which proves that age cannot tame Ardbeg’s smoky power

Ardbeg has released the oldest and most prestigious expression yet to join its permanent range of whiskies.

Ardbeg 25 Years Old is a supreme single malt that proves unequivocally that age cannot tame Ardbeg’s smoky power, but it can yield some of the most complex and majestic flavours ever to emerge from the Distillery. It offers whisky lovers the opportunity to experience Ardbeg at its most intricate, balanced and beguiling.

The spirit was distilled during the 1990s, at a time when Ardbeg Distillery was only producing a trickle of new make spirit every year. Ardbeg from this period is therefore extremely rare, but the whisky creation team deemed that after a quarter of a century, the malt was so exquisite that it should be bottled and released as a permanent expression – albeit in limited quantities.

Fittingly for such a precious whisky, Ardbeg 25 Years Old is presented in a unique gun metal bottle encased in an beautifully intricate metal ‘cage’ – a modern take on the classic Ardbeg knotwork, and symbolic of the untamed complexity of this extraordinary whisky.

Ardbeg’s Whisky Creator, Dr Bill Lumsden, said: “After a quarter of a century in the cask, you’d be forgiven for imagining that Ardbeg 25 Years Old would have lost some of the hallmark Ardbeg smoky punch. I can assure you it hasn’t. And yet there’s also a remarkable complexity and elegance to this whisky that I find utterly captivating. It’s unmistakably Ardbeg, but unlike any Ardbeg you’ve tasted before.”

Ardbeg 25 Years Old is released worldwide this week and available from Clos19.com and whisky specialists, RRP: £710.

Ardbeg:

Ardbeg prides itself on being The Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky.  Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts.  Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox’.  During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction.  Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following.

Ardbeg Committee:

The legacy of the whisky was safeguarded in 2000 by the formation of the Ardbeg Committee.  The Committee is made up of thousands of Ardbeg followers worldwide who are keen to ensure that “the doors of Ardbeg never close again”.  Today there are more than 100,000 members of the Ardbeg Committee in over 130 countries.  Committee members are regularly consulted on new bottlings and expressions and are offered exclusive Committee bottlings.  Members also receive invitations to special gatherings, tastings and events.  The Committee, chaired by Mickey Heads, is free to join at ardbeg.com.

Awards:

Ardbeg is the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whisky.  Since 2008, Ardbeg has won more than 50 gold and double gold medals in key whisky competitions.  Ardbeg was twice awarded ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards (2010, 2013).  At the 2014 Global Icons of Whisky Awards, Mickey Heads was voted ‘Distillery Manager of the Year’.  The following year, Ardbeg’s expressions took the top three spots in Whisky Advocate magazine’s review of the best single malt Scotch whiskies under US$100.  Meanwhile, both Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Ardbeg Uigeadail have been awarded gold medals at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In 2019, Dr Bill Lumsden was awarded Master Distiller of the Year for the third time in four years. Ardbeg 10 Years Old also won the Best Single Malt Scotch 10 Year Old at the International Whisky Competition 2019, while the Ardbeg Distillery won the Distillery of the Year 2019. In 2020, the International Whisky Competition awarded Ardbeg Corryvreckan first place for Best Single Malt Scotch, Best Single Malt Scotch (No Age Statement), Best cask Strength (Over 57% ABV), Best Peated Scotch and Best Islay Single Malt. Ardbeg Wee Beastie also earned first place for Best Single Malt Scotch Under 10 Year Old and The Ardbeg Distillery achieved another Distillery of the Year award.

The Glenmorangie Company:

The Company is one of the most renowned and innovative distillers and marketers of Scotch whisky brands worldwide and is part of Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.  Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Company produces Glenmorangie Single Highland Malt whisky and Ardbeg Single Islay Malt.

Responsible Drinking:

Ardbeg and The Glenmorangie Company advocate responsible drinking and suggest that drinkers savour Ardbeg whiskies in moderation and in line with recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.
