DISCOVER THE MAKING OF UNTOLD RICHES – Scotch Whisky News

DISCOVER THE MAKING OF

WE CAUGHT UP WITH OUR WHISKY BLENDER AND BRAND MANAGER, STEVEN SHAND, TO DISCOVER THE MAKING OF UNTOLD RICHES.

DISCOVER UNTOLD RICHES

HOW DID YOU SELECT THE CASKS?

WHILST THE SCOTCH WHISKY WE SET OUT TO MAKE WOULD COMPRISE SOLELY OF BUNNAHABHAIN, WE WERE ABLE TO SELECT CASKS FROM MULTIPLE STOCK PROFILES. THIS GAVE US A FANTASTIC RANGE OF FLAVOURS TO BUILD A NUANCED EXPRESSION FROM; SOME OF THESE ANCIENT CASKS HAD AS LITTLE AS 80 LITRES OF SPIRIT LEFT FROM WHAT WAS ONCE 250 LITRES IN THE CASK.

HARMONY OF WOOD AND SPIRIT WAS FRONT OF MIND, SO WE BALANCED ANY DEEP, HEAVILY-INFLUENCED CASKS WITH MORE DELICATE CASKS SO AS NOT TO LOSE THE SIGNATURE MALTY-SWEET CHARACTER OF BUNNAHABHAIN DISTILLERY (WHICH MAKES IT A FAVOURITE AMONGST US AT WEMYSS MALTS). IN THE END, UNTOLD RICHES WAS BORN FROM A RECIPE COMPRISING OF 31 SHERRY AND BOURBON CASKS, RANGING IN VINTAGES BETWEEN 1987 AND 1991.

SCROLL DOWN TO DISCOVER THE DETAILED CASK BREAKDOWN OF UNTOLD RICHES.

WHERE DID THE NAME ‘UNTOLD RICHES’ COME FROM?

YOU REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT TREASURES YOU’LL FIND AMONGST OLD BUNNAHABHAIN CASKS. WE KNEW THERE’D BE SUBSTANTIAL CASK INFLUENCE, BUT WE DISCOVERED THERE WAS SO MUCH MORE TO THESE CASKS. INSPIRED BY THE TREASUROUS CASKS AND THE HIDDEN COASTAL PLACEMENT OF THEIR DISTILLERY, WE FOUND OUR NAME.

IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF A SERIES?

GIVEN THE EXCLUSIVE AND ELUSIVE NATURE OF THE CASKS USED IN THIS BOTTLING, IT’S HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THIS WILL BE THE ONLY EXPRESSION OF UNTOLD RICHES. AS THIS IS OUR FIRST EVER VATTED SINGLE MALT AND WE’RE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THE WAY IN WHICH WE HAND-CRAFTED IT, THERE’S POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE MORE SINGLE MALT RELEASES IN THE FUTURE.

HOW WOULD YOU PAIR UNTOLD RICHES?

THANKS TO THE DEEP-YET-BALANCED NOTES OF UNTOLD RICHES, THERE ARE MANY PAIRING POSSIBILITIES. I’D START WITH SALTED CARAMEL DARK CHOCOLATE, A RICH PORTER BEER OR SOME SHARP SCOTTISH CHEDDAR.

CONNOISSEURS OFFERED DEEPER INSIGHT INTO THE GLENDRONACH WITH CASK STRENGTH BATCH 9 – Scotch Whisky News

CONNOISSEURS OFFERED DEEPER INSIGHT INTO THE GLENDRONACH WITH CASK STRENGTH BATCH 9

The GlenDronach Distillery has today (4th February) released its ninth limited edition release of its Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía. This richly-sherried expression offers connoisseurs a deeper insight into the distillery’s signature profile, by bottling the whisky at its natural cask strength of 59.4%, to bring out the full character and depth of maturation.

With each unique Cask Strength release, Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie individually selects and combines the perfect marriage of sherry casks before they are bottled at natural cask strength, as was custom before the turn of the 20th Century. With every expression of The GlenDronach, the deep, natural colour is drawn from slow maturation in Spanish oak casks. The Pedro Ximénez casks impart rich, fruit flavours, whilst dry and nutty notes come from the Oloroso casks.

Little has changed over the centuries at The GlenDronach, where they carry forth the tradition and time-honoured methods that have been practiced since the distillery was established almost two hundred years ago. Founder, James Allardice, was an early pioneer of sherry cask maturation and deemed the distillery’s complex and full bodied spirit perfect for slow maturation in Spanish oak sherry casks; a popular import into Scotland from Spain in the 19th century.

Master Blender, Dr. Rachel Barrie said:

“The GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 9 is incredibly rich and full-bodied; the result of years of slow maturation in Pedro Ximénez puncheons and Oloroso sherry butts.

Add a drop or two of water to reveal a cornucopia of flavour; from treacle toffee and raisin-filled toasted brioche, to baked apple and bramble pie and star anise. This crescendos into a lingering dark chocolate, espresso coffee finish. The depth of this Highland Single Malt’s character is boundless.”

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep copper
Nose: Cocoa, liquorice root and baked orange on a base of sultana bread and crème brûlée.
Palate: Treacle toffee and raisin-filled toasted brioche crescendo to baked apple and bramble pie, butterscotch and star anise.
Finish: Layers of richly roasted malt, and a lingering dark chocolate, espresso finish.
ABV: 59.4%
RRP: £72

The GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 9 is bottled at 59.4% ABV, and as is the case for all The GlenDronach expressions, develops its deep colour naturally over time from the Spanish oak in which it rests. It will be available to buy from specialist retailers worldwide from February 2021 (global markets may vary) and in the US from June 2021.

Notes

About The GlenDronach Distillery:

Nestled in the valley of Forgue, deep in the East Highland hills, is The GlenDronach, one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The GlenDronach is of true Highland style: a complex and full bodied spirit, perfect for slow maturation in Spanish sherry oak. At The GlenDronach Distillery, we have carried forth the tradition of our founder James Allardice since 1826, maturing our Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky in the finest Spanish Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía in Spain.

Our richly-sherried Highland Single Malts are recognised for their deep colour and complex flavour profiles, which range from the sweet fruity flavours of the Pedro Ximénez casks we select, to the dry and nutty notes of our Oloroso casks.

A Pair of 13 Year Old Scotches at Unbeatable Prices at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Not-to-be-Missed 13-Year-Old “Hepburn’s Choice” Exclusives

NOTE: Our walk-in retail locations are currently closed. We have curbside pickup and low cost (often free) delivery options available in ZIP codes where we can ship lawfully, including anywhere in California. We can also include any new or existing will call orders in your delivery batch. Choose local delivery at checkout to learn if you qualify.

The Hepburn’s Choice line has provided us with some of our best Scotch values in recent months and today’s pair is no exception. Thanks to the magic of teaspooning, we can offer these all-but-in-name single malts for a fraction of the price one would expect. Mortlach’s 13 Year Old is a perfect example of this value, as it’s the same price as the 9-year-old single malt we offered from this distillery last year. The four extra years of age have imparted a superb depth of flavor to this Scotch, as its weighty, meaty characteristics are starting to really show. The Dalmore 13 Year Old is a bottling that might open some eyes to the quality of this distillery. Bottled at cask strength and without the caramel coloring that is otherwise the standard of this brand, this is an opportunity to taste Highland Scotch at its purest, a literal distillation of what this region has to offer. Due to their excellent pricing and quality, we’ve seen past batches of Hepburn’s Choice sell out in a flash, and, considering what’s on offer here, we expect the same level of enthusiasm. Act quickly to make this unique duo your own.

2007 Below Bhainidh (Mortlach) 13 Year Old “Hepburn’s Choice” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
($59.99)

Another stunning deal from the excellent Hepburn’s Choice line. We made a conscious decision to bottle all our single cask malts from this line as blended malt, adding a tiny drop of whisky from another distillery to the cask, thereby reclassifying it and saving everyone tons of cheese! More proof of that plan coming together exists in this awesome bottle. We were barely able to sell a 9 year old Mortlach last year from the same bottler for under $60, and now we can offer a 13 year old version for nearly the same price. The awesome Mortlach Distillery is in Dufftown. Dufftown’s Gaelic name is Baile Bhainidh (pronounce Bal-Venie), meaning Lucky Town! Mortlach sits to the south of Dufftown’s more famous distilleries Balvenie and Glenfiddich, in a hollow that nearly hides it completely from view from the road. It was, in fact, the first legal distillery in this special town founded in 1823 on the site of an illicit still, hence the hollow. The distillery features an unusual 2.81 times distillation, long fermentation times and worm tub cooling resulting in an uncommonly beefy spirit. But this youngish Mortlach offers another side of the excellent malt. Filled into a refill hoggie in 2007, it offers some serious fruit along with a deep malty spice. The meaty savory quality is there, but in the background, and can be teased out with a drop of water or two.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: January 12, 2021

We’ve had a nice chunk of young Mortlachs over the last few years. They’re typically solid and mostly ignored until suddenly a few people realize what a great value they are and buy the whole lot up. This new one is significantly older than the last one and only incrementally more expensive. We’ve also turned a corner, I believe, in maturity as compared to the young punchy ones we’ve previously bottled. The color is pale straw. The beast of Dufftown is often said to have a meaty character and that’s very subtle in the younger ones we’ve bottled. Here it’s really starting to come out. The savory bouillon character is now poking its head out from the fruit. But still we have big pear flavors as well. Around that hints of candied mint, wisps of clean (not peaty) smoke, jasmine tea. One the palate a big, rich pear-driven style, some vanilla and a bit of chalk. A nice splash of water adds some honey both to the nose and a palate. It’s still got a lot of the pear stuff going, although now a bit more herbs and slight black tea tickle. These are really starting to show off their weight and although they’re not very cask driven malts, we’re happy to be selling a ridiculously affordable malt from a famous distillery. As always don’t be shy with the water on these!

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 10, 2020

Ahhh, Mortlach. Such a lovely and distinct malt! It’s so often sherry influenced that you rarely get to see the naked malt shine. Here we have a bright golden straw color and an abundance of fresh fruits. The spicy backbone is stout, showing where Mortlach’s power resides. With a little bit of water a deeper darker flavor comes out. Baker’s chocolate and fresh ground flour make you feel as though you’ve walked into a bakery. A fascinating drink for anyone, but most especially for those who are already fans of the distillery and really want to see what their malt is like without the bells and whistles of heavy cask influence. The price is of course stunning due to the lack of tariffs and our direct pricing structure—so don’t miss your chance to snag a couple. Only 271 bottles produced.

2007 Cromarty’s Firth (Dalmore) 13 Year Old “Hepburn’s Choice” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($59.99)

TThe Dalmore Distillery is in Alness, a short drive north from Inverness on the firth of Cromarty. The North Coast boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Scotland and is quickly becoming a world-renowned destination for Scotch lovers and driving enthusiasts alike. Amazingly, this is the first Dalmore we’ve ever bottled for the shop. We don’t see much Dalmore on the open market at all and when we do it’s nearly triple the price we’d ever pay. The Dalmore brand gets a bad rap from some of the whisky cognoscenti, thanks to their high prices, low abvs and ubiquitous use of caramel coloring. There’s some inexplicable desire to be seen ultra-luxurious, perhaps another Macallan of sorts, but of course, there can only be one luxury Highlander! And so Dalmore remains relatively obscure to the broader market and our understanding of the spirit is limited because we rarely get to taste it in its natural, cask-strength form. Indeed, almost all the Dalmore we get has some sherry or other wine cask finish incorporated in its composition. This, on the other hand, is Dalmore “au naturel.” It’s aged for just over 13 years in a refill hogshead and bottled, as all our single casks are, at cask strength without chill filtration or additives of any kind. The whisky is classically Highland with wisps of vanilla, creamy orchard fruit, some bright refreshing maltiness and a twinge of salty sea air. This cask includes one tiny drop of 13 yo Teaninich to get us in the blended malt category.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: January 12, 2021

This whisky is literally the first Dalmore we’ve ever bottled for the store. That’s not because we haven’t seen other casks of Dalmore in our years of searching Scotland, it’s because normally when we see one—even a young hogshead one like this—they’re typically outrageously expensive. I haven’t been able to figure out if that’s the power of the brand itself or simply the rarity and reputation of the whisky. Maybe it’s a chicken and the egg issue. Needless to say, when we can sell a cask strength single barrel for less than the distillery’s 12 year at 80 proof, we’re all ears. But this whisky isn’t just about the details on paper, it’s about experiencing a really high quality malt, in its natural form, for maybe the first time. Let’s have a taste. Immediately the purity and power are clear. Pure malted barley, just freshly toasted. The rawness of yeasty dough, hints of bitter almonds and grapefruit peel. On the palate, darker roasted barley, some herbal/vegetal flavors, relatively dry with almost bitter chocolate striking the mid palate. Like all these youngish hogsheads, we are obligated to taste this with a bit of good quality water. Just a few drops brings out more bitter citrus, hints of honey and fresh leaves. The palate becomes significantly spicier at first but with a few more drops it mellows. Still as it fades a long, big peppery spice takes hold. Despite the light color the flavors are DARK. Caramelized barley sugars, bitter chocolate, earthy wood, roasted spices. Not for the faint of heart by any means, but if you like a big rich and spicy malt driven whisky, you’ve might have found your poison. I actually like this right out of the bottle as much as with a bit of water, but it does hold its water well and continue to open and change with each drop you add. A really fun one to play with and a great value to say the least.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 10, 2020

This bottle is a coup for Dalmore fans. It’s impossible to get the spirit direct from the distillery without being proofed way back and laden with sherry (or for a reasonable price…). Here we have it all—refill hogshead lets the spirit shine. No coloring, no filtration, no water added. It’s unadulterated Dalmore and it’s damn near perfect. Vanilla custard, vanilla shortbread, and vanilla beans dominate the nose. A bit of fresh hay resides in the background. The palate is vivacious. It’s got spunk, zip, pluck, whatever you wanna call it, it’s alive and kickin’. Frankly a quality I don’t associate with the ultra rich and smooth OBs (not bad, just different). To me this is exciting and engaging in a totally different way. We have been offered a few Dalmore casks in the past, but the price is typically prohibitive. With Scottish partners and the tariff free teaspoon, this was too good to pass up.

MORE GREAT DEALS

If you missed last weekend’s Year-End Inventory Sale, or if there were a few deals you regret missing out on, I have some good news for you. We have a selection of whiskies still on sale that you can take advantage of.

A few of these deals are carryovers from our Year-End Inventory Sale, like the Talisker Distillers Edition, Bowmore 18 Year, Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or, Craigellachie 13 Year and Aberfeldy 21 Year. We got a really good deal on these whiskies, so we are passing on the savings.

There are also some new ones though, like the BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 2 and Peated Cask Strength Batch 1. BenRiach has retooled their look, and they are clearing out the inventory before launching the new packaging. Then there is the Tomatin 1988 1st Edition, a 25 year old whisky we are able to offer for a whopping 45% off. It is old stock found lingering in a warehouse in the States… We were offered a deal we could not refuse to take some on!

This is not a complete list of everything currently on sale, but rather some highlights. You can find that on our website by scrolling through all of our sale items!

NEW – Tomatin 1988 1st Edition

This is Batch 1 of Tomatin’s 1988 vintage, which was matured in Bourbon and Port Pipes before bottling at 46%. This is old stock, found in a warehouse in the US, and we were offered a very good deal to help clear it out… That’s why it is nearly 50% off! 87.73pts Whisky Base, this is without question one of the best deals we have right now; and you won’t see Tomatin this old at this price, ever again!

Was $490 – SAVE 45% – Now $269.49!

NEW – BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 2

BenRiach has revamped their packaging and image, and accordingly, they are trying to clear out the old packaging in Alberta. So they put it on sale, and when we get a deal, you get a deal… Batch 2 – the current release – is bottled at 60.6% ABV. The whisky within was aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon, ex-Oloroso Sherry, and Virgin Oak Casks. 87-88pts Whisky Base.

Was $115 – SAVE 25% – Now $86.24!

Stock arriving Wednesday!

NEW – BenRiach Peated Cask Strength Batch 1

Batch 1 of the BenRiach Peated Cask Strength is bottled at 56% ABV. As the name would suggest – it is peated. It has been aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. New-ish though it is, it is not in line with BenRiach’s newly revamped branding, so the importer put it on sale. And when we get a deal, you get a deal!

I can’t lie, we stocked up on this when the importer put it on sale. The Bowmore 18 Year is one of the best value sherried Islay malts at full price. When we can offer it at 20% off, it’s a steal. Curt has added a recent tasting note on our website. “Seemingly gone are the lavender-heavy days of distillation; we’re back in full-on fruit mode. And the smoke? Bold enough to provide an unwavering backbone, yet gentle enough to expand the appeal well beyond the peat-addicted masses. “

Was $125 – SAVE 20% – Now $99.99!

Aberfeldy 21 Year

Billed as one of “The Last Great Malts”, Aberfeldy is a hidden gem from the Highlands. Just downstream from Loch Tay the distillery is nestled in the foothills of the Grampian mountains. The bottling strength is only 40%, but the whisky is stunning and very complex. It is one of the best-priced distillery bottled 21-year-olds at full retail, at 20% off, it screams bargain!

Was $180 – SAVE 20% – Now $143.99!

Mortlach 16 Year

This 16-year-old Mortlach was inspired by the distillery’s long lost, but beloved, “Flora & Fauna” bottling from the 90’s & 2000s. Part of the newly revamped Mortlach range released in 2018 after the disastrous prior range. Matured exclusively in ex-sherry and bottled at 43.4%, at 25% off this is a great value malt.

Was $140 – SAVE 25% – Now $105!

Talisker Distillers Edition 2018

Take that punchy, peppery and peated profile that so perfectly embodies what Talisker is all about, then wrap it in the sweet, creamy and fruity warmth of ex-Amoroso Sherry Butts for another year or so. What you get in the end is exactly what you’d expect, but also something that is so much more than the sum of its parts. Fear not, though. The nippy and beautifully oceanic Talisker we adore is still present and accounted for.

Was $120 – SAVE 25% – Now $90!

Loch Lomond The Open Special Edition

Bottled to mark the partnership between Loch Lomond Distillers and The Open. Matured in three types of American oak and bottled at 46%. The whisky offers a balanced mixture of peat, fruit, vanilla and smoke. A sign of greater things still to come from the Loch Lomond Distillery!

Was $73.99 – SAVE 30% – Now $51.79!

Elements of Islay Peat Pure Islay

This whisky oozes value at $50 (500ml bottle) and is a steal at $37.49. “PEAT Pure Islay is the companion to PEAT, trading its feisty full strength for a more approachable and easy-sipping 45% ABV. Packed with Islay smoke, it’s still a go-to whisky for both cocktails and long drinks, as well as being an excellent dram to sit with long into the night. Created using whiskies from a handful of distilleries from across Islay, PEAT Pure Islay is a well-balanced and easy-drinking everyday whisky to keep all smoky dram fans happy.”

Was $50 – SAVE 25% – Now $37.49!

Tomatin Contrast

This is a very interesting two half bottle release from Tomatin Distillery which shows the contrast between ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels and their influence on Scotch. The distillery vatted whiskies from 4 decades, and then further matured it in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry before bottling at 46%.

Was $210 – SAVE 35% – Now $136.49

Jura Seven Wood

Not content with double wood or triple wood, Jura has gone right to SEVEN WOOD with this bottling. Not just a made up golf club, the Jura Seven Wood Single Malt Scotch comes from the Jura distillery on – get this – the Isle of Jura. The Jura Seven Wood is composed mostly of unpeated Jura Single Malt plus a small portion of peated Jura as well. It is aged in a combination of American Oak ex-Bourbon barrels and SIX different French Oak Barrels. Bottled at 42%.

Was $122 – SAVE 35% – Now $79.29

Port Askaig 100 Proof

Port Askaig is a line of mystery Islay single malts. The whiskies are reputed to come from the Caol Ila distillery. The 100 Proof is a no age statement whisky bottled at 57.1% (100 British Proof). It is named for Islay’s ancient ferry and fishing port on the island’s north-east coast.

Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or

This whisky was born from the memory of entering a pastry shop for the very first time. It’s about that first moment of finding your senses deliciously overwhelmed, breathing in the sweet scents and wishing you could take a bite of every creamy, flaky treat you see. In Nectar D’Or you can taste it all. To create it, we take the delicate, fruity spirit of our giraffe-high stills and age it in American oak bourbon casks along with casks that once held Sauternes sweet white wine.

Craigellachie 13 Year

Part of the Last Great Malts series from Bacardi/Dewar’s – this 13-year-old from Craigellachie Distillery is bottled at 46% ABV. This 13yr old along with the rest of the Craigellachie official prime-numbered lineup was introduced in 2014. The whisky was a hit in our 2020 KWM Whisky Calendar and is a very good value at $80/bottle. At 30% off it is a steal!
