Ultra-Rare, Collectible Scotch: 30 Year Old and 50 Year Old Glengoyne Single Malts – Scotch Whisky News

Glengoyne 30 and 50 Year Single Malts:
A Can’t-Miss Pair of Supremely Rare, Aged Whiskies

Extremely limited availability on definitive collectible bottlings

It’s safe to say we won’t see an offer like this again soon, if ever. This one is for the collectors, the true enthusiasts for whom fine Scotch whisky is a lifestyle. From the much adored distillery that straddles the line between Highland and Lowland (literally and figuratively), these two sublime, old drams from Glengoyne are here for one reason—to take the greatest Scotch collections to new levels. The 30 Year Old is the quintessential expression of the “The Glengoyne Way”, as it’s known at the distillery. This refers to the longest, slowest distillations in Scotland, using only local fuel (no imported peat), and aging in strictly selected, well-prepared Sherry butts. Three decades of patience have yielded a remarkable whisky of epic complexity and singular character. As the distillery itself does, this whisky walks the tightrope between regional styles, becoming something all its own. For the truly committed, the extremely rare 50 Year Old is a coup de grâce in any collectors’ arms race. Only 150 individually numbered bottles were filled, and only 20 will arrive in the U.S., making it one of the rarest whiskies in the market. Crafted from a selection of the oldest casks in the distillery’s stocks, the youngest whisky in the bottle is a spry five decades, with some older than that. With extremely limited availability, the window of opportunity is short, so seize this chance to redefine your Scotch collection in a once-in-a-lifetime way.

*These items are expected to arrive for pickup or delivery by late 2021

Glengoyne 30 Year Old “Limited Edition” Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($950.00)

The Glengoyne 30 year is the culmination of decades of decisions designed to make the very best possible single malt. Using 100% Oloroso Sherry casks, a mixture made up mostly of first fill and also old refill butts, selected for their quality 3 decades ago. The Glengoyne malt is distilled extremely slowly to encourage fruity richness and superb texture. Only a few thousand bottles are deemed worthy of the quality demanded of this special spirit. Glengoyne is one of Scotland’s most “green” distillers and is committed to using 100% recycled packaging materials, most of which are sourced locally.

Glengoyne 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($32,000.00)

A very limited release of only 150 bottles worldwide, each individually numbered to highlight this exceptional whisky and the oldest ever Glengoyne Single Malt. Only 20 bottles will be available in the USA. Glengoyne 50 year old was created by vatting together some of the very oldest casks from the distillery warehouses. Casks were initially married in 1997 and lay slowly maturing in American oak Sherry butts and a refill hogshead for 23 years before being married again in 2020 and bottled later that year.

First annual batch release of Benromach 40 Years Old single malt Scotch whisky released – Scotch Whisky News

First annual batch release of Benromach 40 Years Old single malt Scotch whisky released

Benromach Distillery in Speyside has unveiled the first annual batch release of its 40 Years Old, with just over 1,000 bottles available worldwide.

Bottled at a cask strength of 57.1%, this rare single malt whisky is natural in colour and was laid down in 1981 before spending four decades maturing in the finest first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. The result is an exquisite single malt and the oldest expression released in Benromach’s new look line up which was launched in June 2020.

Benromach is a traditional Speyside distillery owned by a family intent on producing single malt using time honoured methods. Its small team of distillers rely entirely on their expertise and senses to make the finest handmade whisky. A small number of casks maturing in its dunnage warehouses were selected for this first annual batch release, with a further release planned each year.

Keith Cruickshank, Distillery Manager at Benromach, said: “This is the first time we have added a higher aged expression into our portfolio as an annual batch release. Each batch will be bottled at natural strength and will reflect the nuance and character of the casks selected for bottling each year.

“Our first Benromach 40 Years Old displays rich ginger and stewed fruit aromas, Seville orange, red apple and demerara sugar flavours before finishing with citrus zest and a subtle hint of charred oak. It truly is something special.”

The single malt is displayed in a striking black stained solid oak wooden box with copper- coloured detailing and printed metal plaques. The deep amber single malt is presented in the bespoke Benromach bottle which features a heavily embossed and gold foiled label to complete the quality feel.

Benromach 40 Years Old is priced at £1,500. Prices in international markets may vary due to local taxes and import duties.

About Benromach Distillery

Originally built in 1898, Benromach Distillery was brought back to life when the Urquhart family realised a lifelong dream to own a distillery and purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five-year period before it was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Rothesay in 1998.

In reopening Benromach Distillery, the Urquhart family wanted to create a single malt whisky that has a classic Speyside character: beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke.

Benromach Distillery is located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres. Its five-star visitor centre is currently closed but is planned to reopen in the spring of 2022 for tours and tastings. Benromach Distillery is a member of the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail.

The Whisky Exchange “Everything You Need To Know About Whisky (but are too afraid to ask)” – Whisky News

After more than a year of planning, months of writing and weeks of proofreading, we are very proud to announce the launch of a very special project: our first-ever book – Everything You Need To Know About Whisky (but are too afraid to ask), by Nicholas Morgan.

At The Whisky Exchange, we’ve been talking about writing a book about whisky for years, but could never find the right person to take up the mantle of actually writing it. However, when Dr Nicholas Morgan announced his retirement from Diageo – where he had been working in whisky communication for decades – the perfect author became available.

We didn’t want the same sort of whisky book that others have written in the past, instead wanting to head away from that well-trodden path with something that both looked and sounded different, with new viewpoints that aren’t often explored in whisky writing. With three decades of working in the industry for the largest producer of Scotch whisky, Nick certainly has a unique take on the whisky world compared to most whisky writers.

Working with Nick, publisher Ebury Press (a non-fiction division of Penguin) and illustrator Jonny Wan, we have created something quite different from other whisky books. It’s beautifully presented and packed with information you won’t find anywhere else. It’s not a book of whisky recommendations and it won’t give you a still-by-still breakdown of different distilleries, but is full of whisky and the people who love it.

I managed to grab Nick Morgan for a quick chat last week, and we talked about him, how he came to be involved with the project, and all about the book itself.

Everything You Need To Know About Whisky (but are too afraid to ask) is available now exclusively from The Whisky Exchange, and will appear in book stores in September.

Glenury Royal Distillery was established to the north of Stonehaven in 1825. Only three distilleries in Scotland have been permitted to use ‘Royal’ in their title and it was granted to Glenury in 1835 by King William 1V. Glenury Royal was a malt whisky distillery which operated from 1825 with just two stills until they were increased to four in 1965. The distillery closed in 1985 and was demolished in 1993 but the square support base of the round brick chimney remains with a plaque attached. The site is now a private housing estate on the edge of Stonehaven. Glenury Royal Distillery is a lost Scottish Highland malt whisky distillery.

James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail began their business in Elgin in 1895 with John Urquhart joining the workforce at that time, to become a partner in 1915 when MacPhail retired. When Gordon died in 1817 the Urquhart family took over the business. This independent family business prospered and built up a stock of good quality casks from a wide range of distilleries over the years. In 1993 they purchased Benromach Distillery. Brands include Connoisseurs Choice, Cask Strength, Rare Old and Speymalt.

BENRIACH KEEPS TRADITION ALIVE WITH FIRST EDITION OF MALTING SEASON – Scotch Whisky News

BENRIACH KEEPS TRADITION ALIVE WITH FIRST EDITION OF MALTING SEASON

Celebrating traditional methods dating back to the earliest days of Benriach Distillery, Benriach Malting Season will be the first expression in a century to be produced entirely using barley malted from the Speyside distillery’s historic floor maltings.

The floor malting method is a highly skilled process requiring the delicate and skilled hand of Benriach’s team of dedicated craftspeople. After being steeped in water, the barley is spread across the malting room floor and turned by hand over several days to allow for optimum germination of the barley. Using their keen eye, the malting team decides when the barley is ready to move to the kiln and the iconic pagoda shaped chimney comes alive.

The first edition of Benriach Malting Season is two-cask matured in bourbon and virgin oak barrels to bring out the wholesome, creamy flavour we find in the distillery’s floor malted spirit, giving a beautiful barley gold colour to the liquid. The expression boasts a rich aroma of barley sugar, almond fudge and poached orchard apple with smooth, rounded flavours of vanilla and honeyed pear, with a lasting nuttiness of slowly kilned malt.

For each new edition of Malting Season, Master Blender Rachel Barrie, will carefully select the type of barley and bottling strength, making each annual edition a truly unique expression in its own right. This inaugural release is made from concerto barley and has a bottling strength of 48.7% ABV.

Stewart Buchanan, Global Brand Ambassador at Benriach, commented:

“Passed from distiller to distiller throughout the generations, the floor malting process keeps a traditional part of the whisky making process alive with Benriach being one of only seven distilleries in Scotland to continue the practice of floor malting. Distilling spirit from barley malted here on site is a true labour of love and something we are passionate about keeping alive here at Benriach as an ode to our creative whisky making heritage.”

Rachel Barrie, Master Blender at Benriach Distillery, said:

“At Benriach, we never stop exploring how fruit, oak and barley flavours intertwine and mature in our broad range of eclectic casks. The unique process behind Malting Season allows the cereal flavour from the concerto barley to pull through and when married with the creamy, wholesome flavour from being two-cask matured in bourbon and virgin oak barrels, creates a truly unique expression.”

The first edition of the small batch release is comprised of 23 barrels, all distilled on 2nd November 2012, yielding 6672 bottles in total. Timing of product availability will vary by country.

About Benriach Distillery

A Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky as intriguing and extraordinary as Benriach could not have come to be without a unique whisky making heritage, dating from 1898, when founder John Duff built his distillery. Ruggedly beautiful, Benriach stands on the site of the old Riach farm in north Speyside, drawing water from a mineral-rich aquifer, deep beneath the distillery.

Thanks to a long-standing tradition of distilling three styles of whisky; classic unpeated, Highland peated and triple distilled, together with an eclectic selection of casks from around the world, our whisky makers are able to explore the full flavour possibilities of Single Malt, creating some of the richest, most multi-layered whiskies in Speyside.

This tradition continues today, under the guidance of Master Blender, Rachel Barrie. Benriach is the story of a hidden Speyside gem, quietly revealing its treasures to be discovered and savoured.

Heaven’s Door 6 Year Old K&L Exclusive Barrel #75 Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey – American Whiskey News

Heaven’s Door 6 Year Old K&L Exclusive Barrel #75 Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

 $59.99

It’s finally happening! All of that MGP, which brands put down more than a half decade ago, is starting to come of age. Of course, if this said Smoke Wagon on it, we’d probably sell the stuff out in a matter of minutes. But a new brand, without a record of selling cask strength barrels might be a bit of a sleeper. With the mature MGP stocks having been bottled years ago, this release marks the beginning of a new era. Our allocations from the legacy producers just down river are being cut left and right, so we’ve jumped head first into any good MGP cask we could find. And while 4 year old MGP can be delicious, there seems to be a BIG quality difference in just two years of additional aging. That’s why the prices nearly double on the brokers market between 4-year-old and 6-year-old stocks. Just 2 more years in the warehouse does make a huge difference. This lot of two barrels is bottled by Heaven’s Door, the brand founded by Folk Legend Bob Dylan. It was barreled on May 30th of 2015 and bottled on June 14th of 2021, a few weeks after its 6th birthday. Using the MGP 21% Rye Bourbon mashbill and an ISC #3 Medium toast, this barrel is a great reminder of why MGP should always be considered one of the country’s great distillers. These Heaven’s Door barrels are rich and complex, yet nicely balanced between the sweet toasted oak and bold barrel spice. This is one of the best new barrel programs on the market.

Talnua Distillery Releases Two New Expressions of American Single Pot Still Whiskey – American Whiskey News

Bourbon Cask & Stave Series Whiskey

Talnua Distillery Releases Two New Expressions of American Single Pot Still Whiskey

Talnua Distillery is releasing two new expressions in August 2021, their Virgin White Oak Cask and Bourbon Cask & Stave Series. Both releases feature American Single Pot Still Whiskey, with a mashbill of un-malted and malted barley, and are triple distilled following old world customs. The unique maturation techniques of each expression set the two distinctly apart.

The Virgin White Oak Cask release is matured in new charred 53 gallon American white oak barrels. The marriage of old world distilling processes with traditionally American new char maturation results in a whiskey unlike any other. A true example of Gaelic tradition meeting American pioneerism.

Tasting notes overview: A rich expression full of brown sugar and maple notes on the nose with a coating mouthfeel of caramel, allspice, and long drawn out finish. Through the bold virgin oak notes dance the spicy undertones of the unmalted barley in the mashbill.

The Bourbon Cask & Stave Series is aged using a process inspired by winemakers. From the beginning of maturation, virgin charred oak staves are introduced into second-fill bourbon cooperage, allowing for a diversity of flavor traditionally unachievable from a single cask. The controlled oak additions lend to a more grain forward whiskey reminiscent of its Irish cousins.

Tasting notes overview: An elegant dram full of vanilla bean and delicate esters on the nose that meet a bright, grain forward palate. The oak notes of the charred and toasted staves peek through, marrying with the ex-Bourbon cask sweetness finishing with a slight white peppercorn spice on the tongue.

Both releases are aged a minimum of three years and will be bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) in sophisticated gold foil labels and sold inside attractive paper tubes. Beginning August 20, 2021 the release will become exclusively available at the distillery location until September 20, 2021, after which the release will be available at both the distillery and key Colorado retail locations. See the locator map on Talnua’s website for details. Supply is limited to less than 150 bottles of each per month through the end of 2021.

About Talnua Distillery

Talnua Distillery is an artisan small batch distillery that proudly hand crafts each of our spirits. Established in 2017, we embarked on a mission to define a new chapter of whiskey history with the introduction of our American Single Pot Still Whiskey.

True to gaelic-style distilling practices, and unique to the new world, our spirits are produced using a mashbill of un-malted and malted barley and triple distilled in copper pot stills. Located on the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the altitude, changing seasons, crystal clear mountain spring water, and local barley all lend a uniquely American terroir to our products.

We are honored to carry on the traditions of our Irish ancestry and are proud to be leading the way as America’s First Single Pot Still Distillery.

It all began with husband and wife team Patrick and Meagan Miller. In a Galway pub on their honeymoon, they sat watching the 2011 Ireland vs. USA Rugby World Cup Match. An eager bartender was thrilled to share with them the first single pot still whiskey to be released in decades. He regaled them with the history of this nearly extinct style of whiskey and with the passion that one day, single pot still would regain its rightful place on the world stage. The love affair was instant, and the couples’ passion was forever ingrained in the story of single pot still whiskey.

With family history rooted in Irish ancestry, the couple returned to Ireland every year and knew that single pot still whiskey would forever be a part of their story.  Knowing that single pot still whiskey was not yet available in the US they set out to create the first Single Pot Still distillery outside of Ireland. They wanted to bring this style of whiskey to America and imbue it with the nation’s terroir while honoring Gaelic distilling traditions, the immigrant soul, and the pioneering spirit of the American people.

Our whiskeys and gins are produced using Single Pot Still distillation methods with a mashbill of 50% un-malted / 50% malted barley and triple distilled in copper pot stills. We age in the finest oak casks to mature every drop.  For more information on Talnua Distillery and the two August 2021 releases, please visit www.talnua.comwww.facebook.com/TalnuaDistillery, or www.instagram.com/talnuadistillery
