TAKE ME TO THE GATHERING

The Gathering is all about sharing our love for whisky, and we’re delighted to release some specially selected bottlings for the occasion, including casks which was sampled and approved by members!

HERBSTLICHES PICKNICK MIT ZITRONENKUCHEN

Cask No. 9.212

Back in 2020, we sent out samples, hosted events, and invited members to submit tasting notes and names for this cask. The entries were used by the Tasting Panel to create the final tasting note which appears on the bottle and in the Outturn, and our Austrian member Wolfgang Muellner came up with this uniquely descriptive name. We hope you all enjoy it as much as our sample group did!

Westward “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #277 Cask Strength Single Barrel ~ American Single Malt Whiskey News

Westward ” K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #277 Cask Strength Single Barrel American Single Malt Whiskey (750ml)

$99.99 View

Westward has long been producing some of the finest American Single Malts available due to a few very intentional choices and Scottish-like climate. We’ve selected one of their oldest available casks and it’s a classic. Westward only uses Pacific Northwest grown barley and it’s all malted just 10 miles from the distillery at Great Western Maltings. This two-row barley is malted to spec – high color pale malt – which would be something akin to a medium or medium + coffee roast. This brings out an array of beautiful toasted flavors ranging from filberts, almonds, and coffee to chocolate nibs and cereals. Perhaps the biggest flavor differentiator is in the yeast choice. The vast majority of distillers use an highly efficient distiller’s yeast, not so here. Westward employs the Chico Strain ale yeast – the very same yeast that accounts for Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale’s famous flavor. Combine that with a low and slow 5 day ferment and the tropical fruit esters in the whisky are off the charts. Sweet mash leads to a little extra variation from barrel to barrel making the selection that much more special. Our barrel was aged in brand new #2 char 100% American oak for over 5 years in Clackamas, OR. The predominantly cool and wet climate with a short hot summer isn’t all that different from Scotland allowing for that ester development combined with barrel extraction that makes great single malt so special. Distilled 4-21-16. Bottled 6-10-21. 126.8 Proof.

The Whisky Shop “Just landed: Ardnamurchan AD/07.21:05” – Scotch Whisky News

The latest batch from Ardnamurchan…

Another anticipated release from the much-loved Ardnamurchan Distillery, AD/07.21:05 is a 50:50 mix of peated and unpeated spirit with a marriage of 35% maturation in sherry casks, and the remaining 65% in ex-bourbon casks. A more-ishly fruity, sweet and savoury dram with a pinch of salt and a fresh wisp of bonfire smoke.

Ardnamurchan AD/07.21:05 Description

Another highly anticipated release from the much-loved Ardnamurchan Distillery. This single malt whisky is a 50:50 dram, meaning that the spirit is an equal mix of peated and unpeated liquids – 35% of the spirit underwent maturation in sherry casks, and the remaining 65% in bourbon casks. What this has achieved is a remarkably multi-faceted dram that has total harmony in flavour. Free from chill filtration, this has a strength of 46.8% abv and is a natural colour. Hailing from the most westerly point in the British Isles, prepare to experience the coplexity of this coastal dram.

The nose gives aromas of fresh, zesty lemon, with marshmallows and caramel. Sweet and savoury notes combine on the palate, with oily, salty peaches, pastry, and sea salt. The finish is splendid, and resembles the dramatic environment of the Ardnamurchan Distillery in Lochaber, with further sea salt, before a gentle bonfire smoke finish.

F. Paul Pacult Releases 7th Book: BUFFALO, BARRELS, & BOURBON: The Story of How Buffalo Trace Distillery Became the World’s Most Awarded Distillery – American Whiskey News

F. Paul Pacult’s Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon Set to Publish September 8th

The saga that chronicles a remarkable whiskey-making legacy, born  on a low bank of the Kentucky River, where for millennia vast herds of buffalo crossed searching for richer pastures

Hawthorne, NY (August 31, 2021) – The world’s most respected, honored, and trusted spirits authority, F. Paul Pacult, is set to release his seventh book, Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon: The Story of How Buffalo Trace Distillery Became the World’s Most Awarded Distillery on September 8, 2021.

Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon tells the compelling story of Buffalo Trace Distillery, located in Frankfort, Kentucky. With chapters ranging from “…As Crooked as a Dog’s Hind Leg…” to “Resistance is Futile” this book delivers in depth storytelling, pictures, timelines, sidebars and more. It spans the time of Daniel Boone’s late eighteenth century explorations in uncharted Kentucky through the trials of the U.S. Civil War, two world wars, Prohibition, and the Great Depression to the present era. Pacult’s meticulously researched account explains why Buffalo Trace Distillery has won more than 1,000 awards from around the world for whiskey distilling excellence.

Described in Imbibe magazine (May/June 2020) as “an all-knowing spirituous oracle, a J.D. Powers of liquor”, F. Paul Pacult is a critic, journalist, educator, and the creator of F. Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal who has been writing about spirits since 1989. His previous books have included Kindred Spirits, American Still Life, A Double Scotch, and the recently released The New Kindred Spirits.

Respected industry influencers who have praised Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon:

“This book is more than just a history of a world-class distillery. Pacult uses the story of Buffalo Trace to tell the very story of bourbon itself — the very story of Kentucky itself — with expert verve and wit. An immediate classic.”

Clay Risen, author of American Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye: A Guide to the Nation’s Favorite Spirit

“I could listen to Paul Pacult tell stories about the Buffalo Trace Distillery for days on end. That’s a lot to ask of a guy, though, so I read his engaging book instead. And man, did it ever speak to me. It’s an exhaustively researched and deftly written historical tome that is guaranteed to make you thirsty. With Buffalo, Barrels & Bourbon, Paul Pacult continues his longtime reign as America’s finest spirits scribe.”

Dan Dunn, author of American Wino: A Tale of Reds, Whites and One Man’s Blues

“Historically, a “buffalo trace” was the path ground away by herd of migrating bison. There were no maps to guide the pioneers along those trails, but in Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon, Paul has provided an excellent map to the trail of one of Kentucky’s legendary distilleries. While the Buffalo Trace brand may be just a couple of decades old, it is built on a legacy dating back to the days of the pioneers and Paul’s extensive research provides the definitive guide to the story of Buffalo Trace from the Lees, Taylors, and Staggs to today’s award-winning distillers.”

Mark Gillespie, Host/Executive Producer, WhiskyCast

The ideal  book for any whiskey lover, Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon will be released in hard copy and E-book version on September 8, 2021 and will be available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Indiebound, Bookshop.
