CRAGGANMORE DISTILLERY

25 Year Old 1995 Old & Rare

£279.79

Cragganmore 25 Year Old 1995 vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Single sherry butt bottled April 2021 by Hunter Laing & Co. for the Old & Rare series. 298 bottles. This burnished gold coloured whisky has a deep, rich, sweet nose of treacle, dried fruits and butterscotch. On the palate it is full bodied with a slight tongue prickle alongside stewed prunes and sultanas, all leading to a long, satisfying finish with a fruity aftertaste.

Cragganmore Distillery in 1869 in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside whisky region. This is a malt whisky distillery equipped with four very short stills and is one of the few Scottish malt whisky distilleries that continues to cool its new spirit in traditional worm tubs. The few distillery bottlings including Cragganmore 12 Year Old and Distillers Edition are well enhanced by those of independent bottlers.

K&L Exclusive: A 14-Year-Old Speyside Cask at Outstanding Pricing – Scotch Whisky News

A One-of-a-Kind Speysider from the Incomparable Signatory
2007 Glen Elgin 14 Year Old “Signatory K&L Exclusive” Hogshead Cask Strength Collection Speyside
Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($89.99)

“If you love malt for malt’s sake, this cask is too good to skip.”
— Andrew Whiteley, K&L Spirits Buyer

Oh, Signatory. Will the hits ever stop coming? Hopefully not, as this latest installment from our incredible independent bottler shows yet again what kind of singular, absolutely stirring whiskies they seem to unearth in their warehouses on a regular basis. The Glen Elgin distillery has long played a significant role in many well-known blends, but it’s only recently started to gain traction under its own name as collectors have discovered what distinctive and characterful malts come off the old worm tub stills at this under-the-radar Speyside gem. This 14 Year Old is a monument to malt itself and a testament to what long, patient fermentations and distillations can achieve. While the pale color may suggest an ethereal, high-toned dram, it’s anything but that. Spirits buyer David Othenin-Girard explains, “Oily and chewy with tons of honeyed sweetness up front … it’s almost shocking how fun this is right out of the bottle … Utterly perfect for those who appreciate the malt-driven character that this relatively naked Speysider can offer.” There are few, if any, like it in the market, and at a stellar, sub-$100 price, it will provide an unmatched drinking experience to single malt aficionados everywhere.

2007 Glen Elgin 14 Year Old “Signatory K&L Exclusive” Hogshead Cask Strength Collection Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($89.99)

K&L Notes: While many distillery owners prefer shell and tube condensers because they are cheaper and easier to maintain, it is no secret that, for many great malts, a worm tub is critical to the final character. Glen Elgin is a classic worm tub distillery. Juicy fruit and palate weight are the major hallmarks of Glen Elgin, situated in Speyside’s small hamlet of Fogwatt. The distillery has very long fermentation times (ranging from 80-120 hours) and an unusually clear wort. Combine that with very slow distillations and you have a vibrant, fruity malt. Condense that fruity malt in a slow, meandering worm tub, and you’ve got robust body. This somewhat paradoxical profile has lead Glen Elgin to be prized by blenders and have a cult following among single malt enthusiasts. Fortunately for K&L customers, Signatory has secured a choice cask for us. Aged 14 years, matured in hogshead. Distilled on 5/1/2007. Bottled 5/21/2021 53.2%ABV. Cask No 800253. It’s big and rich with bushels of stone fruit and chewy malt.

Don’t let the pale straw color of this malt fool you. It’s a rich tapestry of fruit and grain with just a light veil of wood. The nose is full of fleshy ripe fruits ranging from nectarine to pear to golden apple. If grain ripened like a fruit, this would be ripe malt as well. A delicate savor feels almost like the crunch of hot, freshly fried tempura. It’s chewy and satisfying, yet somehow light. The palate is thick with malted barley and a fresh snowy blanket of citrus zest. If you love malt for malt’s sake, this cask is too good to skip.

Slowly but surely the fabulous Glen Elgin distillery is gaining fans. We likely have our friends at Compass Box to thank for producing several excellent blends that highlight the gorgeous and nuanced character of this semi-rare distillery. We bought a few barrels from an excellent lot of ’95s nearly a decade ago, and over that period have yet to come across one that suited our tastes. This one, however, offers the perfect snap shot of a malt-driven Elgin at an altogether reasonable price. Similar whiskies sell at competitors’ shops for $30-$40 more, and none will deliver the purity and zest of this supple offering. The color is pale straw. Slightly shy at first, but with just a few minutes in the glass the nose opens up exceptionally. A pure, linear maltiness encompassed by golden raisins, flecks of cacao, salted caramel, and Barlett pear skins. On the palate, utterly pristine pear and pointed white pepper. The texture is much richer than the color would imply. Oily and chewy with tons of honeyed sweetness up front moving toward roasted almonds and pithy citrus on the back. It’s almost shocking how fun this is right out of the bottle, but with a splash of water it explodes with tropical fruit aromas. Kiwi, papaya, yuzu! On the palate, it’s still got plenty of weight and adds a toasted vanilla character. Utterly perfect for those who appreciate the malt-driven character that this relatively naked Speysider can offer.

Dram fine support for air ambulance island lifeline – Scotch Whisky News

Dram fine support for air ambulance island lifeline

Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) is raising a toast to two of the most respected names in the world of whisky after receiving a £20,000+ donation to support its crucial lifeline to the country’s islands.

Master Distiller Jim McEwan and Dramfool staged a series of special events to mark Jim’s retiral after a lifetime in the whisky industry.

Living on Islay, Jim and his family know first hand the value of air ambulance support for island and outlying communities and he had no hesitation in naming SCAA to receive funds raised during his swan-song sell-out events.

A virtual Masterclass tasting and a special single cask bottling were among the events which attracted support from whisky enthusiasts throughout the world.

Dramfool’s Bruce Farquhar explained that the support from Jim’s army of fans was “overwhelming” with global interest particularly piqued by the single cask bottling of Jim’s beloved Bruichladdich from his personal collection released to celebrate his contribution to the whisky industry.

“We were absolutely blown away by the interest and support we received for the online event and the special bottling,” he said. “Having more than 260 people over at least eight time zones and 12 countries tune in for tasting was amazing.

“Then to sell 314 bottles of the celebration Bruichladdich in just seven minutes was beyond all expectations – among the fastest sellouts of any release we’ve ever had.

“It is this enthusiasm and affection for Jim McEwan, Islay and the work of Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance that resulted in such outstanding support from our clients.”

As Jim joined Bruce Farquhar and Colin Fraser from Dramfool to present a cheque for £20,549 to SCAA, he expressed his pleasure at being able to support a charity close to his heart.

“I’ve worked in Scotland’s greatest industry all my days and now, as I hand over to the next generation, it seems appropriate to give something back to a charity that has proved a lifesaver to the people of Islay and other remote communities across Scotland,” said Jim.

Islay-based SCAA volunteer Katherine Urquhart accepts the cheque from (from left) Bruce Farquhar, Jim McEwan and Colin Fraser.

“Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance is funded solely from public donations and it’s crucial that we all try to help fund its life-saving flights. Everyone who supported our special events is helping to keep these guys in the air.”

Nick Harvey, Director of Fundraising and Communications at SCAA, said the support shown by Jim and Dramfool would help save lives.

“SCAA is a regular visitor to islands such as Islay and Jura to tend and airlift those seriously ill or injured,” he said. “Our pre-hospital care and speed in getting patients to mainland care can literally prove a lifesaver.

“We’re extremely grateful to both Jim and Dramfool – and the many hundreds who supported the events – for recognising the value of SCAA’s life-saving service. Our thanks to everyone concerned.”

JOURNEYMAN DISTILLERY’S HISTORIC COLLABORATION WITH THE FIELD MUSEUM IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT O’HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – American Whiskey News

JOURNEYMAN DISTILLERY’S HISTORIC COLLABORATION WITH THE FIELD MUSEUM IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT O’HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Take the spirit of history on your travels

THREE OAKS, MI (November 9, 2021) — Journeyman Distillery is thrilled to announce that its artisan collection of Field Spirits, created in collaboration with the Field Museum, is now available for purchase at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport Terminal 1, just in time for holiday travels and shopping. First released in 2018 in celebration of Chicago’s Field Museum’s 125th anniversary, this series of historically-created spirits include a gin, vodka and rye whiskey made from botanicals that were first collected for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

Crafted using locally-sourced Midwest grains and water from the distillery’s untreated underground aquifer, Journeyman Distillery prides itself in being exceptionally American.

Field Rye is made by macerating Journeyman’s most-awarded and best-selling Last Feather Rye whiskey with black mission fig, one of the world’s oldest sweeteners. By resting in the Last Feather Rye for more than three months, the black mission fig imparts subtle, all-natural and complimentary flavors of sweet melon, banana and strawberry to the spicy and fruity characteristics of the rye and is certified organic, kosher and gluten-free.

“It was an incredible opportunity to collaborate with the Field Museum, which has resulted in three historic, artisanal spirits that honor the Museum’s and the city of Chicago’s agricultural history. Distilling is all about history and preservation, and using the world’s oldest flavors to create the finest spirits is what Journeyman is all about,” says Journeyman Distillery founder Bill Welter. “A ‘Journeyman’ is also an adventurer who embarks on great unknown adventures, making it quite fitting for this collection to be available at O’Hare – for all kinds of journeys.”

“The partnership the Museum has with Journeyman continues to be incredible. It is rare to find a group of people who are as dedicated and invested in creating not just a product, but an experience with such authenticity and I am thrilled we get to share that now with travelers at O’Hare”, said Megan Williams, Director of Business Enterprises at the Field Museum.

Whether purchasing a gift on the way through town or restocking on the way back in, Field Spirits will be ready to travel and available at O’Hare International Airport as of November 20, 2021. Field Rye (SRP: $59.99)
