The Gauldrons unveils first Limited Edition Release – The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish – Scotch Whisky News

The Gauldrons unveils first Limited Edition Release –

The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish

Leading distiller, blender and bottler, Douglas Laing & Co, today announce the first ever Limited Edition under their award-winning Campbeltown Malt Scotch Whisky brand: The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish.

Joining the core expression which launched in 2017, The Gauldrons Sherry Edition is strictly limited to no more than 2,125 bottles. A marriage of Single Cask Single Malts exclusively from Campbeltown, the Blended Malt enjoyed a finishing period in specially selected Spanish Sherry Casks. Such is the philosophy of the Douglas Laing family business, the small batch bottling is offered at a high alcohol strength of 46.2% and is without colouring or chill-filtration.

The Gauldrons, inspired by the eponymous dark sandy coves on Campbeltown’s west shores, literally means “bay of storms”. It was here King Robert the Bruce, having been defeated by his enemies, was inspired watching a spider building his web with great patience but great difficulty, to try, try and try again. The spider has become synonymous with the core The Gauldrons expression, featuring too on this new limited edition.

Packaged in a sleek black bottle, red colourways bring to life the Sherry cask maturation, hinting at the rich character of the Scotch Whisky inside. Gold foil detail and a mini booklet, placed around the bottle neck, complete the product’s premium packaging.

Commenting on the new release, Cara Laing, Marketing Director, said: “We’re thrilled to launch the first ever Limited Edition for The Gauldrons. The classic Gauldrons spirit is always a standout dram for us, earning rave reviews from the industry and delighting consumers at events the world over. Experimenting with these exceptional-quality Sherry casks has resulted in a classically Campbeltown dram with smoky sweetness balanced by rich spices, and we truly can’t wait to share it with whisky aficionados across the globe.”

The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish will be available from specialist spirits retailers and online from late April 2022. It is expected to retail at £60.00.

Tasting notes

A remarkably sweet nose with toffee apples, marshmallows, caramelised sugar and candyfloss.  The palate delivers crème brûlée, evolving to ginger, nutmeg and red apple with lingering smoked barley. A sharp finish with tangy orange sweets, stewed red fruits and black pepper covered strawberries

A K&L Exclusive Speyside 15 Year Old from a Legendary Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

A Sublime Rarity from a Beloved Speyside Standout
2007 Mortlach 15 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($109.99)
“A fabulous, contemplative whisky and a thrilling contrast to the vibrant, fruity, mid-aged Highlanders we’re bringing in this year.” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

Fresh off their latest pilgrimage to the old country (i.e. Scotland), the spirits team is feeling inspired, and their latest haul is full of can’t-miss treasures that will have any Scotch collector beside themselves with joy. Today we’ve got a sublime, aged Speyside specimen from a distillery that we rarely see bottled as a single-malt and almost never see with this kind of age on it. The Mortlach 15 Year Old K&L Exclusive Cask from our friends at Old Particular is one for the thinkers and the patient drinkers among our Scotch fans. Mortlach’s well-earned reputation as one of the more brooding, dark-hearted malts out there is on full display in this bruiser. Spirits buyer Andrew Whiteley sums it up nicely when he observes, “You’ve got to want it, to take the time to coax it out.” Aeration, water, and a great deal of waiting bring out a spectacularly weighty and wide-ranging profile that pays full respects to the quintessential character of the Beast of Dufftown. It’s a stirring and serious dram that will require something of you, but the rewards are very much worth the effort, and then some.

2007 Mortlach 15 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($109.99)

K&L Notes: The Mortlach distillery is one of Scotland’s very best. Located in the heart of Speyside, this special distillery is very rarely found as a single malt. The little valley at the southern edge of Dufftown has been the location of a licensed distillery since 1823, but it was most likely the site of illicit distillation long before that. It was Dufftown’s first legal distillery after excise reform and would anchor the town as one of Scotland’s most important distilling communities. The spirit was prized from the very beginning and was purchased by John Walker & Sons exactly 100 years after its founding. It remains a core element in the entire Johnnie Walker line, but the distillery did not get a widespread single-malt expression until 2014, when two NAS expressions and two expensive, age-stated offerings were released. They’ve since retooled the distillery line, and it remains one of Diageo’s most well-regarded offerings despite recent price increases. This little cask represents a continuation of stocks that we’ve bought several times over the years starting in 2014, now with significantly more age. At 15 years, we’re starting to see the malt’s more mature characteristics take shape, which is particularly interesting without a huge amount of oak or sherry to obscure the character.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: October 13, 2021

It’s not often we get a ‘naked’ Mortlach. It smells dense, if that’s a thing. It’s a bit cliché to say Mortlach is brooding, but there it sits, just all packed tight into the glass. You’ve got to want it, to take the time to coax it out. It’s not a particularly meaty expression at first nosing, very unlike the recent Sovereign 10-year bottling we had in stock briefly. There is a bit of zesty citrus fruit on the nose buried under a layer of dew-soaked grass. It conjures an ocean breeze on a foggy morning when you add some water. The palate is very full and mouth-coating, almost a touch waxy. There is a stony, crushed rock component. Over time, richer flavors of cocoa and fatty pork belly begin to come through. The morning dew on the grass dries off into a much more complex bouquet of thyme, marjoram, and alfalfa. Just as you finish your glass, you are treated to more fresh fruit and vanilla, and a dollop of honey. You’ll have to go back for a second pour to unlock the rest of this dram.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: September 10, 2021

We’re getting pretty used to having young Mortlach in our selection. It seems like these refill hoggies are relatively available in the 8-10 year range. This is a bit of a different story, moving into a different age range, which seriously changes the complexity of this special malt. The color is pale straw. It’s definitely not a fruity one and starts pretty subtle. With some air and a few drops of water though, this big old malt starts to come to life. The darker malt character that comes out is slightly tamed by some bitter citrus peel, cacao, lightly roasted espresso beans, and some snappy saltiness. On the palate, it’s richly textured and somewhat savory although not fully into the bouillon side of Mortlach. This one needs time and air to really start giving everything it’s got on the nose, definitely one to avoid for the rushed drinker. Surprisingly, the palate is really open and complex, but the nose takes time to match. A fabulous, contemplative whisky and a thrilling contrast to the vibrant, fruity, mid-aged Highlanders we’re bringing in this year.

Loch Lomond Whiskies Unveils Striking New Packaging as it Accelerates International Growth – Scotch Whisky News

Loch Lomond Whiskies Unveils Striking New Packaging as it

Accelerates International Growth

Independent multi award winning distiller, Loch Lomond Whiskies, has unveiled a spectacular new design for its packaging as part of further significant investment into the brand.

The refresh marks the next chapter for the whisky distiller which can trace its roots back to 1814 and has since grown to become one of the most diverse, adept and capable distilleries in Scotland.

The bold new packaging initiatives underlines the continuing ambition of the brand, and its parent The Loch Lomond Group, to further grow its already impressive sales and presence internationally.

Loch Lomond Whiskies sees the entire portfolio of whiskies, including its collection of three 12-year-old expressions, its limited edition “The Open” expressions, and its older age single-malts, all unveil a striking new look.

Both primary and secondary packaging have been re-designed using richer and deeper colour tones and bolder fonts to improve the products’ visibility and impact on shelf. A new contemporary bottle design which includes detailed embossing to improve tactility, has also been introduced helping to drive significant premiumisation and create clear differentiation from other whisky brands in the market.

In addition to the new visual designs, Loch Lomond Whiskies has undertaken work to update its pack copy to reinforce its brand storytelling, showcase its history, heritage and its strong connection to the stunning Loch Lomond area, and highlight its signature style of fruit, honey and soft smoke.

The significant investment in the brand has been delivered across all of Loch Lomond Whiskies’ domestic, international and GTR ranges. The premium aged range also benefits from an elevated bottle style, with metalized labels and shoulder coins and mirrored on a crystal style with heel embossing.

Colin Matthews, CEO of The Loch Lomond Group said: “Since the founding of our business over 200 years ago, the generations of people behind our brands have been doing things differently with great success.

“We continue to have this incredible ambition and passion to not only produce fabulous award-winning whiskies but to always be imaginative and innovative in our approach to creating exceptional whisky, and striking and relevant packaging has always been part of this.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen very significant growth in our brand across the world, and as we look to continue to both excite existing consumers and engage new ones, both at home and abroad, it is important that our products stand out on from the rest and clearly communicate our heritage, history, quality, brand story and signature style of fruit, honey and soft smoke.

“This major refresh and investment is an important step in our continued growth strategy which underpins our position as an exciting, accessible and high quality malt brand. It also supports our partners, and our sales and marketing teams, across the world as we continue to engage all consumers and build on our quality reputation and awareness across all markets”

As one of only four distillers in Scotland to have its own onsite cooperage, and using a combination of traditional swan-neck, and its straight-neck-stills, Loch Lomond Whiskies has a whisky-making capability like no other in the country.  The straight-neck stills, which are entirely unique to The Loch Lomond Distillery, give Master Blender Michael Henry greater control over the distillation process, allowing him to carefully create the flavour profiles, providing an overall portfolio of exceptional single-malt whiskies which are under scored by its signature style.

Loch Lomond Whiskies is the official Spirit of The Open, having agreed a prestigious five-year partnership with The R&A in 2018, which extends to this year’s 150 Year Celebration of The Open at St Andrews.

The transition to the new packaging will begin from 20 April, with the global roll out following in line with distribution schedules.

VCL Vintners Launches NFT Marketplace, Metacask, And Completes First Auction from The Vanishing Spirits Line in Under an Hour

VCL Vintners Launches NFT Marketplace, Metacask, And Completes First Auction from The Vanishing Spirits Line in Under an Hour

VCL Vintners, London’s leading whisky cask broker among millennial investors have launched their cask-based NFT collection, The Vanishing Spirits line with Ernie Button, on NFT marketplace Metacask allowing for investors to bid for spirits backed NFTs. Metacask becomes the first marketplace focusing on the issuance and trading of whisky casks as NFTs. With their first auction from the Vanishing Spirits Line going live on April 5, they are setting a benchmark for investment and a statement of intent across the industry.

By launching Metacask, it allows individuals to be able to buy whisky casks and works of art and use a digital artefact as a proof of ownership. Instead of a paper-based delivery order, you are now able to take part in auctions and sales of NFT casks and use the NFT itself as a proof of ownership – knowing that the physical cask is safely existing within a HMRC-regulated facility, under Scottish law. The goal of Metacask is to take away this need for private brokers to store proof of ownership on private databases, and to begin storing this information on somewhere far more decentralised and far more accountable, the blockchain.

There are no restrictions placed on who can participate in purchasing casks on Metacask due to the asset being considered a property, however there is a know-your-customer check, executed digitally,in place to ensure that individuals are eligible to purchase NFTs. This is paramount and unique to Metacask and will ensure the validity of purchaser, as they will be the owner of a tokenised physical asset held in bond.

The Vanishing Spirits line is a collection of eleven single malt whisky casks, which have all been paired with a unique NFT of the whisky distillate, which comes from the whisky cask itself. Metacask has already hit the ground running by selling the first cask in under an hour, via a Dutch auction. The token used was CSPR, selling for 99,580 CSPR tokens; the equivalent of $8,960.00 USD according to prices on 6 April 2022.

Metacask look to sustain momentum with the launch of their second cask at an auction appearing on April 7 at 12:00 CET. The 2020 refill standard Hogshead from Glen Elgin features alongside an NFT.

The first 10 casks released for auction are a mix of casks from the most important production areas in Scotland. The casks are all relatively new makes and each NFT will show information about the cask, including the unique reference number. Last tested values will also be available unless it is a new make. The eleventh cask is the most special cask from the Vanishing Spirts line; it is the only one which will be revealed when the token is minted in time for its auction.

Award-winning Phoenix-based photographer, Ernie Button, is instrumental to the gravitas of this project, with nearly 15 years’ experience in whisky distillate photography. The inspiration for this ethereal and otherworldly set of designs came to him one day when putting away his scotch whisky glass, he left it out overnight, and when he came back the next morning, he realised there were patterned fine lines on the bottom of the glass where the tiny dregs of whisky had dried. Given the right conditions, nearly all aged whisky will produce these lines, Ernie has since experimented with this and through playing with time, age, and humidity amongst other factors, he created ‘The Vanishing Spirits’ collection. A truly timeless and unique set of photographs to accompany a cask that now belongs to legacy itself.

Prior to the launch of Metacask, VCL had completed a world record auction of a sale of a cask whisky distilled at The Macallan Distillery in 1991. It was paired with a work of art by Trevor Jones and the final sale price of this was just over $2.3 million. This was the first sign that blending both original pieces of art with the whisky market could transcend expectation, and since this landmark auction, there have been multiple others including artwork from Ruben Frosali and now, photographer Ernie Button.

Commenting on the launch of The Vanishing Spirits line, CEO and co-founder, Stuart Thom, said “The whisky market has seen phenomenal growth over recent years, with no signs of a slowdown. The Vanishing Spirits line will give owners a contemporary, 21st century way to connect with their whisky and art. Our goal is to bring this asset class to as many people as possible and increase their awareness and understanding of it through new technology; blockchain technology is the future. NFTs have been transforming the art market over the years, particularly to younger buyers and this is an exciting opportunity to bring whisky to them.”

Malt Messenger by Andrew Ferguson – April 27, 2022 – The G&M Generation Glenlivet 80 Year Has Arrived & More! – Scotch Whisky News

It seems like ages ago, we announced the imminent arrival of the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 80 Year, at 80 years of age, the world’s oldest whisky. It was 6 months ago to be precise, in October of 2021. We had originally planned to launch it in late Fall 2021 or early in 2022. But as with many things, the pandemic got in the way.

In the interim, Macallan has launched an 81-year-old to claim the record for oldest whisky. The whisky, it should be noted was all but certainly sourced from Gordon & MacPhail. Even though the Glenlivet 80 Year only held the title for the oldest whisky ever bottled for just a year and a half, it is still in rare company, and will forever hold the title of the world’s first 80 year old whisky.

Richard Urquhart, Gordon & MacPhail Head of Sales (Americas), and the 4th generation of his family to own and operate the company will be joining us today to launch the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 80 Year in-store. We invite you to drop in between 4 and 6PM to meet Richard, view the bottle (possibly your only chance), and sample a couple of Gordon & MacPhail whiskies… not the 80 year though!

A little over a decade ago, Kensington Wine Market was selected by Gordon & MacPhail to launch the Generations Glenlivet 70 Year. A sister cask to the 80 Year, and also at the time of its bottling, the oldest whisky ever bottled. I thankfully kept a tiny sample of the Glenlivet 70 Year from a press kit for a special occasion, and as such, was able to sample the two whiskies side by side. The video of the tasting is on our KWM YouTube page!

As always, in the event of a discrepancy in price, the point of sale at KWM will be taken as correct. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions, comments, or requests (but online ordering works too, in fact, it might be faster…).

Wishing you all a Happy Easter & Passover from your friends at Kensington Wine Market.

Sincerely,

Andrew Ferguson

G&M Generations Glenlivet 80 Year – 44.9% – First fill Sherry Butt Cask #380 – Distilled: 3 February 1940 – Bottled: 5 February 2020 – My Tasting Note: “Nose: deep, antique-y (as you’d expect), old school sherry tones; creme caramel, creme brule and toasted coconut; soft elegant leather, damp cigar tobacco, and high cocoa content dark chocolate; Australian licorice and Christmas cake; ripe mango, papaya and grilled pineapple; candied orange peel and dried apricot; you can tell its old, but also far from over the hill. Palate: round, rich, decadent, and distinguished; still antique-y, this is a fine example of old school sherry matured whiskies, but also far from over the hill, with none of the telltale signs of over oaked spirit; juicy tropical fruits, more mango, papaya, melon, and grilled pineapple; some kiwi fruits, fig and apricot jams too; Manuka honey, treacle toffee, dark chocolate, and Christmas cake; old Armagnac, polished old leather sofas, and Cuban cigars; some faintly musty-earthy dunnage notes slide in with delicate spices. Finish: warm, coating and elegant with soft smooth sherry tones, dark chocolate, subtle spices and tropical fruits. Comment: what is most remarkable about this beautiful whisky, is how well it has aged; it is more sherried than the Generations Glenlivet 70 Year, but as with its sister cask bottling still vibrant and far from over the hill; it is an absolute treat and a real privilege to have had the opportunity to sample this whisky; well done Gordon & Macphail!” – $140,000.00 – 93pts Angus @WhiskyFun.org

30TH ANNIVERSARY WHISKY FESTIVAL NIGHT 1

·     Date: Thursday, May 19, 2022

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $80

·     Pick-Up Date: No pickups… it is in person!

Our Fall and Spring Single Malt Festivals pre-Covid were, to say the least, a hot ticket. Often they would sell out so quickly that we felt compelled to offer a second night. And given that Covid isn’t completely behind us yet, it doesn’t feel right cramming 100 of our whisky friends into the shop just yet. Accordingly, we are offering two more or less identical 30th Anniversary Whisky Festivals, one week apart, for a smaller crowd than usual, to give as many of our whisky friends as possible a chance to attend. As always, our neighbour Peasant Cheese will be lining your stomachs with delicious cheese, charcuterie, sausage rolls, and other treats! Both Festivals are limited to 70 participants and we are asking people to only register for one date or the other, and not both, out of respect for other customers. Thursday, May 19, 7 PM – 9 PM.

We recently received a very cool range of whiskies from our friends at Whiskybase, who are best known for their “Fishes of Samoa” series of Archives bottlings. We’ll be joined in the tasting by CJ and Abby of the Whiskybase team as well as their Canadian importer Igor Kossov. Our range will include: Balcones 2017, Benrinnes 1997, Burnside 1996, Glentauchers 1989, Glentauchers 1996, Irish 1990 and Secret Speyside 1998. Thursday, May 26, 7 PM – 9 PM.

·     Date: Monday, May 30, 2022

·     Time: 7 PM

·     Cost: $215

·     Pick-Up Date: Ready now!

We wanted to do an epic range of 30-year-old whiskies, and whiskies from 1992, the year we opened to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. We also liked the idea of hosting the tasting on the 30th… just for effect. Our range includes a few bottles we held back just for a special tasting. Our full range is: Archives Secret Speyside 1990, Bowmore 30 Year, GlenAllachie 30 Year, Glenfarclas 30 Year, Peat’s Beast 30 Year, Signatory Jura 1992, Whisky Fassle Aberlour 1990 30 Year and Whisky Fassle Glen Keith 1992. The tasting also includes a special KWM 30th Anniversary Logo glass… provided they arrive in time! Monday, May 30, 7 PM
