2006 Bunnahabhain 15 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Bourbon Barrel Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $109.99 View

2005 Glengoyne 16 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $79.99 View

The Glengoyne distillery straddles the official dividing line between the lowlands and the highlands, but the famous distillery’s credentials have never been questioned. Founded in 1833 and not ceasing operation during the several industry crises and closures, the Glengoyne Distillery has long been associated with sherry matured single malt production. The distillery name, an anglicization of the term Glen Guin, means to the valley of the wild geese. The distillery received the Royal Warrant to supply the household of the Queen Mother in 1984 and the distillery’s current bottlings still feature the warrant prominently. The distillery boasts long fermentation and a very slow distillation intended to enhance the sweet fruity character of the spirit. While the distillery is typically filling European and American Oak seasoned with sherry, this unusual expression exemplifies the true nature of the spirit perfectly. At a lovely point in its maturation with a nice somewhat active hogshead not completely masking the character of the spirit, few single casks will offer as much inviting fruity character and approachable flavors. A particular strong value considering the current prices of the core range and while some Glengoyne lovers might prefer this whisky matured in Sherry, few would plausibly deny the inherent quality of this exceptional spirit in this rarely seen style.

2009 Talisker 11 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $119.99 View

What can we say about these exceptional Talisker stocks except that we simply wish we could get more. The special distillery on Skye was once completely off limits for independent bottlers. We bottled the first IB Talisker we’d seen in decades back in 2014, a young 5 year old that was unbelievable good. Now more than a half decade later, those same stocks are incredibly still available and significantly more mature. This gorgeous Talisker exemplifies everything we love about the magical distillery. Truly born of the sea, the character of Talisker is distinct from all other peated malts. Wild and complex, it’s very difficult to get a similar experience from even the finest Islay distillery. This one does love water so don’t avoid a few drops or you’ll be leaving at intermission.

1991 North British 30 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Bourbon Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml) $149.99 View

Once a bastion of ridiculous value, the single grain market has seemingly jumped the shark over the past couple of vintages. Supplies are tight and prices are high, but occasionally we come across casks that still far outpace their price point in terms of quality. This 30 year old North British is exactly that. One of the more complex grains we’ve had in some time, it was aged for three decades in a fresh bourbon barrel, which likely accounts for the exceptional quality. The North British distillery was established in 1885 not far from Edinburgh Castle. Now controlled as a joint venture between Diageo and Edrington, it can produce upwards of 65 million liters of pure alcohol per year from mostly corn. The exceptional size of this distillery does not proclude it from making high quality grain and while most of the production is used in Famous Grouse and Johnnie Walker, we occasionally get access to product of high quality at reasonable prices. The key, it would seem, to producing high quality grain seems to be using high quality wood and allowing long maturation. This is exactly what we’ve got here. A gorgeous creamy and very approachable old grain for a very solid price.

1990 Isle Islay Malt 30 Year Old “Redacted Bros.” (Thompson/Dornoch) K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $299.99 View

The hits never end from the excellent team in Dornoch. This treble of casks from a famous, undiclosed distillery on the southern coast of Islay represents some of the finest values we’ve ever come across. Even considering the extreme inflation in prices on old Islay malts, we would have never previously been able to offer casks of this quality from this exceptional traditional distillery at this price. But thanks to the incredible network that the Thompson Brothers have developed we’ve been able to garner unprecedented access. An exceptional example of the heavily peated style after 3 decades in barrel, unsullied by wine barrels or finishes of any type. Few whiskies offer more distinctly charming examples of this sought-after style. This exceptional cask was distilled in November of 1990 and bottled just before it’s 31st birthday in 2021. It was bottled at cask strength without chillfiltration at 100.4 proof. Sold exclusively at K&L Wine Merchants, the old hogsheads turned out just 252 bottles.

Scotch Malt Whisky Society ‘Peaty Festival Finale’ – Scotch Whisky News

PEATY FESTIVAL FINALE

BOOM…our two Islay Rare Releases have landed, as a spectacular finale to our Flavour Hunters Festival. Islay is the only region where we’ve bottled two festival whiskies this year, and although they’re both in our Peated Flavour Profile, these whiskies show how different island drams can be.

Rare Release 53 brings a great mix of full-on Islay peaty character with dark, nutty and sweet oloroso sherry. Left to mature over the course of 17 years in less active hogsheads, Rare Release 3 is an elegant take on a Peated Islay whisky with beautiful herbal peat smoke along with exotic fruits.

Keep on scrolling to discover more or click over to our website to explore more peaty characters… or try something a little different from our Oily & Coastal profile.

Glenfarclas 40 Year Old Distillery Bottling Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Glenfarclas 40 Year Old Distillery Bottling Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

$1,199.99 View

SKU #105954995 points Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Glenfarclas has a proven track record for aging very well. I’ve enjoyed some amazing 25 and 30 year old expressions, in addition to some older vintage offerings. Does this new 40 year old follow suit? Absolutely! It’s complex and well-rounded, with great depth and no excessive oak. Lush, candied citrus (especially orange), old pot still rum, maple syrup, fig, roasted nuts, and polished leather, with hints of mocha, candied ginger, and tobacco. A bit oily in texture (which I find soothing) with good tannic grip on the finish. A classic, well-matured Glenfarclas — and a very good value for its age. *Editor’s Choice* (JH, Fall 2010) Inner quote mark

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark There aren’t many 40-year-old Scotches out there. This one makes its age known with a deep nut-brown color and a modest booziness on the nose, in addition to deep toffee, cocoa and hazelnut aromas. Oak is the dominant flavor, finishing with dry cocoa and leather accents. Water helps tease out additional orange peel, nutmeg and toasted coconut tones. Velvety feel. (KN) Inner quote mark (12/2011)

K&L Notes

Glenfarclas is one of the Highlands’ finest, but somehow they managed to get the extra old whisky out for less than $500, which makes this, in my opinion, one of the finest values in single malt…period! (David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits buyer).

  • 2022 Single Cask #11: Balcones Distilling Texas Single Malt Aged in a Tequila Barrel(126 btls): SRP, $120

In addition to the above new single casks, Lost Lantern will be releasing a limited amount of distillery partner exploration bundles. The collections will include multiple releases from a single distillery to help whiskey lovers explore each distillery’s range. Bundles range from $140 – $320.

“The Lost Lantern Summer 2022 Collection emphasizes comparison, showing the full range of the distilleries we work with and what we as an independent bottler add to that conversation,” explained Lost Lantern Co-Founders Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski. “All seven casks in the new collection are meant to be points of comparison: sometimes to each other, sometimes to previous Lost Lantern releases, sometimes to the distillery’s own releases.”

Single casks are an essential piece of the Lost Lantern model, inspired by the long tradition of independent bottlers in Scotland. Since their debut in October 2020, Lost Lantern has released 29 one-of-a-kind single casks from 16 of the finest distilleries in the United States: Santa Fe Spirits (NM), Cedar Ridge (IA), New York Distilling Company (NY), Ironroot Republic (TX), Whiskey Del Bac (AZ), Balcones (TX) Watershed (OH), Boulder Spirits (CO), Spirit Works (CA), St. George Spirits (CA), McCarthy’s (OR), Smooth Ambler (WV), Starlight (IN), Westward (OR), Frey Ranch Distillery (NV), and Dad’s Hat (PA).

ABOUT LOST LANTERN’S SUMMER 2022 SINGLE CASK COLLECTION

Lost Lantern’s single casks show that the best whiskey reflects where it’s made, how it’s made, and who made it, and demonstrate that compelling whiskey comes from across the United States.

2022 Single Cask #5: McCarthy’s 3 Year Old Oregon Peated Single Malt Whiskey

(1240 btls | 114.1 Proof): SRP, $90

McCarthy’s is arguably the first American single malt. This fresh, approachable, heavily peated single malt is made from U.K. barley malted with Islay peat and was fermented, distilled, and aged in Oregon. It was aged for 3 years and 11 months in a second-fill 228-liter Oregon oak cask and has notes of leather, oak, iodine, and maple syrup-drizzled vanilla ice cream.

2022 Single Cask #6: Frey Ranch Distillery Nevada Three Grain Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(196 btls | 118.2 Proof): SRP, $100

Colby and Ashley Frey have transformed Frey Ranch, a fifth-generation family farm in the watershed of the Sierra Nevada, into one of the most exciting distilleries in the country. Frey Ranch grows all the grain for all of its whiskies, making it one of the only true estate distilleries in the U.S. This 5-year-old straight bourbon is one of the first three-grain whiskies ever to come from Frey Ranch. It has notes of chocolate, clove, spearmint, and balanced oak and is more spice- and fruit-driven than their traditional four-grain style.

2022 Single Cask #7: Starlight Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(208 btls | 116 Proof): SRP, $80

Located just across the Ohio River from Kentucky and only about 20 miles from Louisville, Starlight Distillery is part of Huber’s Orchard & Winery, an Indiana institution since 1843. This straight bourbon whiskey was aged for 4 years in a 53-gallon barrel and has flavors of lemon zest, cinnamon strudel, nutmeg, and creamy vanilla.

2022 Single Cask #8: Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey

(188 btls | 127 Proof): SRP, $90

Pennsylvania has a long and historic distilling tradition dating back to the colonial era, but by the 1990s, Pennsylvania rye whiskey had disappeared completely. Mountain Laurel Spirits, better known by its flagship brand Dad’s Hat, has brought this tradition back to life. This straight rye whiskey, Lost Lantern’s first from Dad’s Hat and first from Pennsylvania, was aged in a 53-gallon barrel for 5 years. It is fresh and grassy, with spearmint on the nose and candied orange, chocolate, and clove on the palate.

  • Comparison Cask: 2022 Single Cask #9: Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in a Vermouth Cask

2022 Single Cask #9: Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in a Vermouth Cask

(119 btls | 119.9 Proof): SRP, $110

This release was made by finishing 4-year-old Dad’s Hat straight rye whiskey for 5 months in an ex-vermouth cask, which amplifies and builds upon the sweeter elements of the underlying rye whiskey. It has apricot and spearmint on the nose, and a rich palate that balances big baking spice, citrusy sweetness, and fresh green grass. A unique and deeply flavorful twist that shows how the right finish can naturally complement a whiskey.

  • Comparison Cask: 2022 Single Cask #8: Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey

2022 Single Cask #10: St. George Spirits California Single Malt Whiskey

(215 btls | 106.7 Proof): SRP, $160

Founded in 1982 and located in Alameda, California, St. George is the country’s first craft distillery and is renowned for its commitment to experimentation, innovation, quality and precision, fresh and flavorful local ingredients. When they released their first single malt whiskey in 2000, they were blazing a new trail. More than twenty years later, they still do. Distilled on a pot still and aged for 3 years and 10 months in a new oak cask, this whiskey is a beautiful intermingling of soft, floral flavors with gentle oak, clove, and nutmeg notes.

2022 Single Cask #11: Balcones Distilling Texas Single Malt Aged in a Tequila Barrel

(126 btls | 129 Proof): SRP, $120

Balcones is a pioneer, not just in Texas Whiskey but across the board. Their experiments with mashbills, barrel finishes, barrel sizes, and new techniques have helped break new ground in American whiskey. Cask #11 is no exception. It spent 5 years in a used tequila cask that previously held Balcones Rumble, a spirit distilled from honey, sugar, and figs. This style-bending whiskey, born and raised in the Texas heat, marries clean and elegant single malt with unusual flavors rarely seen in whiskey. It has butterscotch, graham crackers, and chili chocolate on the nose. The light, spicy palate has honey, lemon pepper, and even hints of lime. Perfect for summer.

BIG PEAT WELCOMES UNPREDICTABLE ISLAY WEATHER WITH BEACH BBQ LIMITED EDITION FOR FÈIS ÌLE 2022 – Scotch Whisky News

BIG PEAT WELCOMES UNPREDICTABLE ISLAY WEATHER

WITH BEACH BBQ LIMITED EDITION FOR FÈIS ÌLE 2022

Award-winning Islay Malt, Big Peat, today reveals his special bottling for Fèis Ìle 2022: Big Peat Beach BBQ Edition.

Offered at a natural cask strength of 54.2%, the new release is strictly limited to 3,000 bottles globally. Fans of the “cult” Islay Malt can expect tasting notes of “smoky, maple-cured bacon”, “charred oak” and “chewy salted toffee”.

The limited edition Scotch Whisky is packaged in a premium gift tube, with the brand’s “signature” yellow colourways complemented by deep navy. Big Peat himself is shown at the helm of the barbeque, grilling smoky meats to pair with his Islay Malt, amidst a tempestuous Hebridean rainstorm. Gloss varnish brings to life the raindrops on the packaging in a tactile, eye-catching finish.

In support of the launch, the team behind the iconic Islay Malt brand have partnered with the artisan pizza restaurant in Islay’s capital of Bowmore – the aptly-named “Peatzeria”. Together, they’ll host two exclusive, now sold-out tasting sessions during Fèis Ìle, where ticket holders will get the chance to sample different Big Peat expressions and even an extremely old and rare Port Ellen Malt, paired with fresh local delicacies.

Available exclusively via DouglasLaing.com, Islay Malt enthusiasts are also presented the chance to purchase one of just 70 Big Peat tasting packs, culminating in an interactive online tasting on 20th June.

Commenting on the special edition bottling, Cara Laing, Marketing Director, said:

“An authentic Scottish summer doesn’t always bring blue skies and golden rays, but come rain or shine, our feisty Ileach fisherman is ready to embrace a smoke-filled beach barbecue in celebration of Fèis Ìle! Hand-selected for their charred meat, salty sea-air flavour profile, this remarkable limited edition is a marriage of Single Cask Single Malts, only from Islay. Big Peat looks forward to headlining the Islay Festival with a series of tasting events, both in person and online, bringing the true taste of Islay to whisky enthusiasts the world over. After all, he is Seriously Committed to SMOKE!”

Big Peat’s Beach BBQ Fèis Ìle 2022 Limited Edition will be available from specialist Whisky retailers in the UK, Europe and Asia, plus online retailers, from May 2022. It carries a suggested retail price of £55.00 / €65.00.

Compass Box “Discover Vellichor…” – Scotch Whisky News

We’ve always thought there was something magical about stepping into an old bookshop.

The dusty, hushed atmosphere. The scent of long-forgotten stories. That feeling of being transported to a secret little corner of the world. This limited edition whisky was made in pursuit of that feeling. It’s an emotion translated into liquid.

The term Vellichor was coined by author and artist John Koenig*, meaning “the wistfulness of a second-hand bookshop”. The search for its whisky equivalent was undertaken by our whiskymaker James Saxon.

The enigmatic character of Vellichor is made from incredibly rare, treasured and highly sought-after parcels of whisky, starting with a 23-year-old whisky from the Macallan Distillery. This has been combined with some prized parcels, ‘first editions’ in our eyes to create the multi-sensory experience of reading printed works. Learn more about the full recipe here.

A complex, bookish perfume. Evokes thoughts of leather, polished furniture, and well-worn pages.

Flavours of heathery smoke, vanilla and caramel give way to waxy notes and sweet, tannic mixed dried fruit.

Whisky and old books are well-suited for a reason: it’s a chemistry they share. According to Nose Dive by Harold McGee**, the chemical compounds vanillin, furfural and guaiacol are part of what creates the distinctive smell of old books. These very same compounds can also be found in aged whiskies, like those in Vellichor.

Vellichor is available from our web shop and select specialist spirit retailers. Head to Wine Searcher or contact us for help locating your nearest stockist.
