At long last, our KWM 2022 Whisky Calendars are nearing completion. If you have already purchased or pre-ordered your KWM Calendar, you should be able to pick it up beginning on Saturday, November 12 in-store.

Out-of-town orders requiring packing will be ready beginning on Monday, November 14. You should have already received an email with some details on how to request packing. Please complete the form, even if you think you have already given us instructions as it will help us streamline the packing process.

If you haven’t already ordered a KWM 2022 Whisky Calendar, the good news is we still have some left… and we’ll have stock on hand for in-store purchasing beginning on Saturday!

Tickets are also now on sale for the 10th Annual MS Calgary Whisky Festival, on Thursday, January 18, 2023. After a 2 year hiatus, Calgary’s largest whisky festival is back!

THE KWM 2022 WHISKY CALENDAR – AKA 25 DAY OF DRAM FINE WHISKY – IS BACK!

Our KWM 2022 Whisky Calendar will be ready for pickup and in-store purchase beginning on Saturday. We always over-order products when planning our Calendar, as something always goes wrong. Despite ordering most of the items over a year ago some products never shipped, and others were late. We couldn’t be 100% certain of the final product list in this year’s Calendar until we had 25 whiskies in hand, which finally we will have on the weekend.

1/3 of the whiskies in this year’s Calendar are from producers we haven’t featured in any of the 8 prior editions of the KWM Whisky Calendar. The Calendar also includes 3 KWM single casks, and the oldest SMWS whisky I can remember, from one of my favourite distilleries…

One of the things I am most excited about this year is our bonus trip down memory lane, waxing nostalgiac on 25 of the most memorable single casks we’ve bottled in our 30-year history!

THE CALGARY MS WHISKY FESTIVAL IS BACK

THE GLENDRONACH REVEALS DEPTHS OF SHERRY CASK MASTERY WITH LATEST RELEASE 

The GlenDronach Distillery, hidden in the fertile landscape of the Forgue valley, deep in the east Highland hills, has released its latest richly sherried Single Malt.  The GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 11 boasts exceptional depths of sherry wood maturation, continuing the legacy set out by distillery founder James Allardice in 1826, which marries Highland spirit to Spanish oak.

The GlenDronach Cask Strength offers connoisseurs a deep insight into the distillery’s character, by bottling at the whisky’s natural cask strength, as was the custom before the turn of the 20^th Century.   This eleventh batch of The GlenDronach Cask Strength is a richly sherried Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured slowly in fine Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks.

Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie intricately composes each marriage of The GlenDronach Highland Single Malt for the deepest colour, with the exquisite duality of the Andalucían casks bringing depth, character and complexity to the robust Highland spirit.

She commented: “This eleventh batch of The GlenDronach Cask Strength embodies The GlenDronach‘s celebrated style of Spanish Oak maturation in fine Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía.

“Add a drop or two of water to this latest expression to reveal a cornucopia of flavour – from richly spiced bramble wine and treacle toffee, to lingering Seville orange peel and nutmeg layered with caramel and maraschino cherry.”

As with all expressions of The GlenDronach, all of the natural colour is drawn from slow maturation in Spanish oak casks.

For the many hundreds of collectors worldwide who have been waiting for this moment, thank you for your patience.  The 10th release in the Kylver series is finally upon us, and it will be available to buy from our webshop from 12:00 UK time (GMT) on Thursday 10th November.

How time flies… the tenth instalment in Wolfburn’s flagship collectors’ series is a significant milestone for the distillery and to mark it we have crafted a very special dram indeed. Created from a unique combination of one of our very first Oloroso hogsheads, married with two first-fill bourbon barrels, and with the addition of a tiny – and incredibly mature – Oloroso octave, it is sweet, dark and luxurious.

The oldest of these casks is over nine years of age and the youngest almost eight years – so this is also the longest-matured Kylver release ever.  There are 979 bottles in total, all individually numbered.

NOSE

Rich and sweet. Demerara sugar meets hazelnuts and toffee. Wait a moment and secondary flavours also shine through: dark chocolate and caramel, to name just two.

PALATE

The texture is creamy and luxurious. Savour it for a moment and you’ll find butterscotch and marzipan come to the fore, closely followed by a dark chocolate tang and just a hint of cinnamon.

FINISH

Our first official single barrel from the wonderful and unique Campeltown distiller Glen Scotia. For many years this small distillery across town from the famous Springbank Distillery remained in obscurity. Their new owners have revitalized the property and begun releasing exciting and unusual cask strength editions. This is the very first single cask we’ve been offered and while it may seem young, it’s not at all lacking in flavor. Distilled in 2013 and aged in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to fresh dumped Demerara rum cask for over a year, it was bottled in early 2022 at a natural cask strength of 58.4% alc by vol. This gorgeous whisky offers a unique take on the often earthy, rugged Glen Scotia malt. Wild aromas of caramelized sugar, salt candies, zesty lime cordial, and dried fruits are balanced by a vibrant ginger component. Sweet tropical aromas of pineapple and coconut persist through the palate. All in all, this is one of the finest Scotias we’ve ever come across. We’re grateful to be one of the only stores getting single casks from this special distillery and honored to have been able to pick such an intriguing and unique barrel. The Fortuna Brand was once one of the most sought-after and well regarded names in Kentucky. Founded by Phil Hollenbach in the 1870s and distilled at the once famous Glencoe Distillery, the Fortuna brand is finally back. Reimagined by the Rare Character team, Pablo Moix, Andy Shapira and Pete Nevenglosky, the goal of the brand has remained the same for more than a century, to share “the taste of good fortune.” Hollenbach was a legendary gentleman, having emigrated from Germany in 1869 he was running a successful blender and bottler by the late 1870s. His partners, the Stitzle Bros., distilled Fortuna and Glencoe at the facility in Louisville until at least early 1900s. The modern story is much the same. The greatest bourbon brands are great because of the exacting commitment to quality of their owners. There’s no question that Rare Character has been able to source top tier juice for this special product. Beyond the quality of the spirit, each batch is carefully blended by Pablo Moix, one of the world’s most experienced palates, to mimic the character of an original bottling of the Fortuna Brand. That’s right, Pablo meticulously puts each 6 barrel batch head to head with the original Glencoe juice to get as close as humanly possible to that legendary pour. Batch was bottled in late September of 2022. We’re proud to be selling Fortuna in California and we’re extremely excited to share this special product with our customers.

Lux Row Distillers introduces Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey

Newest addition to the Ezra Brooks brand family will be available in limited quantities starting in November

ST. LOUIS (Nov. 1, 2022) – Lux Row Distillers announced the newest variant in the Ezra Brooks brand family: Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey. A limited allocation of 3,000 six-pack cases of Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey will reach retail shelves across the country later this month at a suggested retail price of $79.99 per 750 ml bottle.

Like other members of the Ezra Brooks brand family, Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey is distilled using the highest-quality ingredients and charcoal filtered for mellow flavor and a smooth finish. Old Ezra 7-Year Rye features two rye mashbills (51% rye whiskey and 95% rye whiskey), is aged a full seven years and is bottled at full proof (114 proof, or 57% ABV) to deliver a full, complex flavor.
