Ardbeg 25 Year Old – 2022 Edition – Limited Stock… – Hard To Find Whisky News

ARDBEG

25 YEAR OLD

ISLAY SINGLE MALT 2022 EDITION

70cl | 46% ABV

This supreme expression proves unequivocally that age cannot tame Ardbeg’s smoky power. But it can yield some of the most complex and majestic flavours ever to burst forth from the Ardbeg Distillery. Bottled from incredibly rare casks filled during some of the Distillery’s darkest days, this is Ardbeg at its most intricate, balanced and beguiling.

Nose: A pungent burst of smoked cream, peppermint and toffee, with Ardbeg’s classic fennel and pine resin. Distant earthy bonfires mix with herbal and fruity (banana and tropical) notes, along with fragrant candle wax.

Palate: An extremely vibrant, hot peppery mouthfeel leads into a burst of sherbet lemon sweetness (candied apples, pears and orange), hints of carbolic soap and tar, more creamy toffee, aniseed and chilli pepper.

Finish: A long, mellow, lingering aftertaste, with lots of cream, fudge and delicate antiseptic notes. An elegant, soothing style of Ardbeg.

Cardrona Distillery Unveils Special Release to Celebrate Seventh Birthday – Middle Earth Whisky News

Cardrona Distillery Unveils Special Release to Celebrate Seventh Birthday

New Zealand’s award-winning Cardrona Distillery is celebrating a milestone seventh year of production tomorrow [Saturday 5th November] by introducing an outstanding new single malt whisky to its luxurious range of small batch spirits – The Otago Pinot Cask.

The celebratory release is an exquisite marriage of four locally sourced, hand selected Felton Road Pinot noir casks. The result is an extraordinary dram from a New World Master. With only 1,217 bottles available, the distillery’s first 700ml bottle is the perfect gift for any discerning whisky lover keen to explore New Zealand’s leading-edge contributions to the art of distilling.

A Cardrona’s spokesperson explains:

“Cardrona Distillery uses a revolutionary method to preserve the casks’ rich Pinot noir seasoning, bringing them to the distillery within hours of the wine leaving the barrel and immediately charging them with new make spirit.

The casks are then matured in the extreme environment of the Cardrona Valley, which itself plays a vital part in the maturation process. Temperatures can vary from -10°C in winter to a soaring 40°C in summer, and at 600m above sea-level with zero humidity – there really is nowhere on earth quite like the Cardrona Valley. The elements have all played a part in this expression, melding the spirit into a simply extraordinary whisky. We can’t wait for the UK’s discerning whisky afficionados to sample a dram.”

The Cardrona Day Special Release: 2022 Otago Pinot Cask is non-chill filtered and naturally flavoured. RRP £175

Tasting notes

Colour: warm rose gold

An Incredible Exclusive Cask Duo from Signatory – Scotch Whisky News

Singular K&L Exclusive Casks from Benrinnes & Caol Ila

“This Benrinnes is an absolute dream for someone looking for a malt-driven Speysider of the highest order.” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

“This is a classic cask in the exceptional category … and a great example of why Caol Ila maintains its place of honor and love among drinkers around the world.”
— Andrew Whiteley, K&L Spirits Buyer

A veritable treasure trove of exclusive casks is now hitting our shelves just in time for the holidays, and one of the biggest contributors to the haul is Signatory, our beloved independent bottler out of Pitlochry. These latest entrants in an already stacked single-cask inventory hail from two of Scotland’s most distinguished distilleries, both seeing time in impeccable, first-fill bourbon barrels. The Benrinnes 13-Year-Old is a lovely expression of the distillery’s contemporary style since they changed distillation methods a few years back, and as spirits buyer Andrew Whiteley notes, it’s “a harbinger of what will be Benrinnes assured future glory.” Meanwhile, the highly sought-after and equally elusive Caol Ila makes an appearance in the form of a spectacular 12-year-old that “is pure and crystalline with the perfect level of peat,” according to David Othenin-Girard. Each cask offers that rare combination of quintessential distillery character, top-quality barrel influence, and a sweet-spot age statement that all come together in incredible values that any savvy connoisseur can cherish.

2009 Benrinnes 13 Year Old “Signatory” K&L Exclusive 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) ($79.99)

K&L Notes: The lovely Benrinnes distillery is one of Speyside’s best-kept secrets. Founded in 1826 by Peter McKenzie, the distillery is a stone’s throw from several household names like Glenfarclas and Aberlour. After being destroyed in a fire, the site was rebuilt in 1835 by John Innes under the name, “Lyne of Ruthries”. It became part of the Dewar’s family in 1922 but was subsequently purchased by the predecessor to Diageo and now is used as part of the famous Johnnie Walker blends. Once the home to an unusual triple-distillation process, the distillery switched to a more typical double-distillation in 2007. That doesn’t mean the malt is any less delicious. It produces a pure and fruity spirit that loves American oak. This lovely cask from the wonderful Pitlochry-based bottler is as classic as a Benrinnes can get. A beautiful nose of fruit and fresh malt. Vibrant and open on first nosing, it loves a few drops of water to further soften and will give any Speyside lover an absolutely sublime experience.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: October 27, 2022

The arrival of Signatory casks always serves to remind me why I love Scotch. The quality of Signatory’s stocks and wood management is extraordinary. Here we have a 13-year-old Benrinnes, distilled in 2009 and filled into a choice first-fill Bourbon barrel, and everything is on point. This isn’t quite as meaty and rich as Benrinnes of old, since they ditched their complex partial triple distillation in 2007, but this is more a harbinger of what will be Benrinnes assured future glory. Yielding just 190 precious bottles, this cask has a nose that screams of late summer days on a small farm. It is orchard fruits and fresh grain, sweet with a season of ripening. A grassy note with just a touch of earthy funk harkens back to Benrinnes’ classic style, but this is somehow sweeter and cleaner. Perhaps the first-fill barrel has something to do with it. Big caramel and butterscotch overtones with fresh vanilla pod cruising underneath play a sizable role. On the palate, fresh cream and more sweet grain are undergirded by a layer of peppery spice and honey. The palate is oily and rich—another hallmark of the house. The finish is medium in length, bright and clean like the nose. In a world where we’re seeing many a distillery bottling of 12-year creep well into triple digits, this 13-year-old cask-strength version of a classic Speysider at a reasonable price is a welcome addition to our shelves and is here just in time for holiday festivities.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: October 21, 2022

We’ve had so much fun selling Signatory over the years that I was disappointed we weren’t able to visit the wonderful warehouses at Pitlochry this year. But our friends Andrew and Des have pulled out all the stops, making sure we got access to incredibly high-quality stocks. We’ve had to fight to get the prices down from the stratosphere and have settled on what I would consider extremely reasonable prices for this set of casks, which will look high compared to some of our direct imports, but when you factor in the quality of the distillers and the barrels themselves, I believe they offer exceptional value. This Benrinnes is one of more than twenty casks from the excellent distillery that we’ve bottled over the years. Compared to some of the lower-flavored refill hoggies we’ve bottled previously, it’s got tons of personality. Still well within what we’ve come to expect, but more proof that seeking out first-fill barrels is always worth the premium. The color is a lovely yellow gold. The nose is a huge mélange of wild honey, ripe Bartlett pear, sweet cereal grains, hints of citrus oil, and fragrant yellow heliotropes. On the palate, it’s creamy and bright, offering more honey and sweet orchard fruit. A warming finish which adds bits of clove and vanilla. With a drop of water, the honey becomes even more pronounced as does the citrus. You can see the oily richness interact with the water, adding viscosity. On the palate, more vanilla and balancing woodiness comes through—bits of bitter herbs and evergreen. This Benrinnes is an absolute dream for someone looking for a malt-driven Speysider of the highest order. It drinks well beyond its age and price point.

2010 Caol Ila 11 Year Old “Signatory” K&L Exclusive1st Fill Bourbon Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) ($99.99)

K&L Notes: Two classic sites of consistent quality come together for this impeccable cask. Signatory—Pitlochry’s famous independent bottler—and Caol Ila, the Diageo-owned distillery tucked away just north of Port Askaig on Islay’s eastern shore. This distillery has played so many important roles throughout its history. Before the distillery began releasing its own age-stated products in the early 2000s, it was quietly blended away into the Johnnie Walker brands (among others), and single malt enthusiasts had to find independently bottled examples. Fortunately, due to the large capacity, there was no shortage of these IB casks available. Today, as the popularity has soared and Diageo claims more of the distllate for their own OB releases, it’s been harder to find prime examples of this wonderful distillery on the independent market. Fortunately for us, Signatory has been locking down these choice casks for a long time. Aged for 11 years in a first-fill bourbon barrel, this is classic Caol Ila with its mix of bright fruit, sea salt, and crab shell, and gentle wafting smoke all in abundance. Bottled at cask strength of 55.8% ABV and without color or chillfiltration. Cask No: 316322. Distilled on 09/20/2010, bottled on 06/14/2022. Yield 222 Bottles.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: October 21, 2022

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a sucker for Caol Ila. You know why? Because it’s freakin’ consistently amazing. The distillery produces such a wildly peated yet approachable malt, I’m often finding myself wondering why the owners of this distillery refuse to make it more prominent. They seem to have plenty of whisky to go around to our various suppliers, and while we know that Johnnie Walker sucks up a fair bit of the production, it seems like they only want to focus on their other Islay legend, Lagavulin. While they seem to ignore this special distillery, we certainly won’t! We’ve bottled countless casks from various IB bottlers in any number of variations, but it’s hard to argue that a great first-fill bourbon barrel isn’t the ideal vessel for this awesome malt. The color is a pretty pale gold. The purity of flavor and freshness are unprecedented. Lemon peels, linalool, saltwater spray, clean wool, clean white smoke, and crushed limestone. On the palate, it’s more smoldery than the nose might imply, but still with plenty of citrus and salt. Very richly textured and rather oily. All of it drawn together with a bright-green peat smoke. The addition of water brings out the saline, hints of salted fish coupled with more citrus and now some pine. On the palate, the texture is even richer with a sweet malt balancing the smoke perfectly. This one is pure and crystalline with the perfect level of peat. An absolutely lovely cask that would be hard to replicate with lesser-quality wood.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 20, 2022

The single malt drinker’s love affair with Caol Ila is easy to understand. Bottlings, be they official releases or independent casks, are almost always good, and often they are exceptional. This is a classic cask in the exceptional category. Just a clean and flavorful bourbon barrel is all this special distillery needs to shine. The vanilla and caramel notes of the barrel are the perfect pedestal to exalt the fruit, smoke, and salt of the malt. It pours the color of Manzanilla Sherry. The first nosing offers Bartlett pear, baked Granny Smith apples, succulent yellow peach, and a fine mist of sea spray with a light smoke in the air. The palate is outwardly sweet—a little honey meshed with the vanilla and butterscotch of the bourbon barrel conspire to highlight more fruit pie with a focus on the flaky, buttery crust that wasn’t so much in the nose. A salty broth of crab shell adds mineral and savory interest, as does the sweet smoke which is much more robust on the palate and finish than in the nose. It’s a lovely dram and a great example of why Caol Ila maintains its place of honor and love among drinkers around the world.

Glenmorangie extends technicolour brand campaign shot by Miles Aldridge – Scotch Whisky News

Glenmorangie extends technicolour brand campaign shot by Miles Aldridge

— Whisky invites drinkers to explore new corners of its delicious and wonderful world —

Last year Glenmorangie Highland single malt Scotch whisky welcomed drinkers into its wondrous world with a colourful brand campaign shot by celebrated photographer Miles Aldridge. It so delighted global audiences, that Glenmorangie is extending the campaign with six new scenes, inviting people to share the simple joy of its delicious whisky. Created in partnership with Aldridge and communications agency DDB Paris, with the tagline “It’s kind of delicious and wonderful”, the campaign’s continuation invites global audiences to explore new corners of Glenmorangie’s world, from November 2022.

Glenmorangie’s whisky creators are endlessly imaginative in their quest to dream up delicious whiskies. They craft their more delicate, fruity spirit in stills as tall as a giraffe, to create more space for taste and aroma. Then they age it in the world’s finest casks – all to bring joy to whisky lovers old and new. The desire to share this delicious enjoyment more widely, remains at the heart of Glenmorangie’s extended campaign, which depicts moments of indulgence enjoyed with friends or alone. Like their predecessors, the new scenes are rooted in the brand’s bold orange hue, and saturated with colour, a realm in which Aldridge is admired worldwide. With its more wonderful version of reality, the brand invites people to immerse themselves further in Glenmorangie’s world.

The campaign won hearts and minds around the globe when it launched in late 2020, and was described by Adweek as “a delightfully unexpected technicolor dream”.  Caspar Macrae, Glenmorangie Global Marketing & Business Director, said: “We’re so delighted with the impact of the campaign so far, and how wonderfully it has reflected our brand and our whisky, that we wanted to extend it further for drinkers to enjoy. With these new scenes, we’re inviting the viewer to step even deeper into the world of Glenmorangie, where everything is ‘kind of delicious and wonderful’.”

From a hot-air-balloon ride with friends to a visit to a barber shop or a trip to the fortune teller, each of the new scenes showcases a moment of delight, seen through Glenmorangie’s lens. Featuring drinkers enjoying Glenmorangie Original, Glenmorangie Lasanta or Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, either neat, over ice or in different cocktails, they hint at the kind of indulgences large and small, so yearned for in Covid times.

Alexander Kalchev, Chief Creative Officer at DDB Paris, DDB said: “In the aftermath of the pandemic, we all have new appreciation for being able to spend time with friends, travel and treat ourselves. And we wanted to draw on that in the campaign, by celebrating moments of pleasure spent together, as well as elevating small moments you can have at home. Of course, working with Miles brings a wonderful richness and detail to the storytelling, which we hope will draw the viewer deliciously into Glenmorangie’s universe.”

Aldridge made it his mission to further elevate each occasion into a more wondrous version of itself, increasing his focus on the moving image, used larger sets and added playful, visual nods to Glenmorangie’s brand symbol, the giraffe, and anagrams of its name. He said: “Ambition really flexed its muscles through every concept. We were able to expand and think big and supersize everything. For example, the scene with the woman in the greenhouse, began with just a woman in a greenhouse. But then, it became interesting to me that she would have a greenhouse so big, it would have two floors and that she would need to ascend stairs to reach a gigantic plant creation. The use of visual clues to the brand: giraffes… anagrams… is far wilder and bolder. I genuinely don’t think consumers will have seen anything like this campaign before. It works in such an original way.”

To celebrate the launch of the new campaign in the UK, Glenmorangie will be opening its first ever ‘Wonder Hotline’ – an immersive pop-up phone box in Spitalfields Market, Shoreditch, running from Tuesday 15th until Saturday 19th November.

Adventure seekers are invited to step inside the bright orange phone box and answer a series of wild and wonderful questions; their answers will direct them to a local drinking hot spot to enjoy a free Glenmorangie cocktail – bars include: Cocktail Trading Company, Light Bar, Coupette, Milroy’s and Seed Library.

The Glenmorangie Wonder Hotline has been designed with floral artistry from LADYGARDEN and coincides with a takeover of the iconic Ebor Street mural with artwork created by Miles Aldridge.  Whisky-loving guests can also sample Glenmorangie cocktails alongside treatments booked directly at Taylor Taylor and Townhouse Nails between Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th November.

About Glenmorangie:

Glenmorangie’s Highland whisky makers use endless imagination and five key ingredients – wood, water, barley, yeast and time – to dream up delicious single malt whiskies. Known as the Distillers of Tain, they’ve been honing their craft for more than 175 years. In Scotland’s tallest stills, whose necks are as high as a giraffe, they produce a delicate and fruity spirit, ripe for experimentation. Led by Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden, this crackerjack crew are on a mission to bring new flavours and possibilities to the world of single malt.

About DDB Paris:

DDB is an international advertising agency, partially based in Paris (Omnicom Group). DDB is a full service integrated communication agency which combines creativity, culture and technology to bring to life ideas that unleash the business of brands. Working with brands in France and worldwide, DDB Paris accompanies Glenmorangie since 2018 on its global communication actions.

About the campaign narrative:

Created in partnership with DDB Paris and Miles Aldridge, the campaign’s extension features seven moments of indulgence, elevated in the wonder-filled world of Glenmorangie. Shot in vivid technicolour, with an emphasis on Glenmorangie’s signature orange hue, each scene contains playful visual clues to the brand’s identity through drinks, anagrams of the word “Glenmorangie” and giraffe motifs (a homage to Glenmorangie’s brand symbol).

The details of each scene are as follows:

The Hot-Air-Balloon Ride

Three friends take a ride in a hot-air balloon in the evening. They land in the desert and watch the sun setting together, as they enjoy Glenmorangie cocktails. On the balloon’s basket is a sign reading “A Glee Morning”, an anagram of Glenmorangie. The brand’s signature giraffe can be glimpsed on the ice bucket.

The Barber’s Shop

A customer enjoys a neat serve of Glenmorangie in the barber’s chair, with a picture of a giraffe hanging on the wall, and the Glenmorangie anagram ‘Enamoring Gel’ displayed on hair care products. But when raises his glass to the mirror after his cut, his reflection is not quite as expected…

Pinball

A young couple play pinball in a technicolour bar. On the side of the pinball machine is the Glenmorangie anagram “Mega Neon Girl”, while the game itself features giraffes, hot air balloons and drinks, with the girls’ final score 1843, the year Glenmorangie’s Distillery was founded. The cocktail is poured over a sphere of ice, in a playful nod to the pinball itself.

Home Cinema

A man relaxes on the sofa at home in formal wear with his bow tie undone, watching a film featuring hot air balloons and the Glenmorangie anagram ‘A Ginger Lemon’, with his dog by his side. On a side table is a lamp with a stand shaped like a giraffe.

The Fortune Teller

A group of friends pay a visit to a fortune teller, who is equipped with a crystal ball and tarot cards featuring cocktails and giraffe symbols. She predicts a cocktail for each of them, which then magically appears. A book on the table is titled with the Glenmorangie anagram ‘Gleaming Reno’.

The Green House

A woman ascends the stairs in a glass house filled with exotic plants. She makes her way past a topiary giraffe and a table featuring Glenmorangie and a cocktail shaker, and plucks from a bush the perfect garnish of berries for her drink. Signage amid the greenery sports the Glenmorangie anagram ‘Gleaning More’.

About the soundtrack:

The track used on the film campaign assets is Cold Little Hearts by Mercury Prize-winning British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka.

About the making of the campaign:

The campaign’s new scenes were shot in Prague in February 2022. Designed and built by much of the same team as had helped to create the original scenes, the new set was highly technical, with scenes ranging from a two-storey green house to a hot-air balloon ride.

About where to the campaign will be available:

The campaign will appear globally in print, digital, digital out-of-home and social media.

About Glenmorangie’s brand symbol:

The giraffe has long been Glenmorangie’s brand symbol, as it is the same height as the necks of the Highland Distillery’s copper stills. The tallest in Scotland, their height makes Glenmorangie’s spirit wonderfully light and fruity. But although the giraffe is known and loved at Glenmorangie and across the world, few are aware of the threat it faces in the wild. Numbers have fallen by 30% in just 30 years – and some types of giraffe are now critically endangered. Knowing how urgently the giraffe needs help, in early 2020 Glenmorangie pioneered a three-year conservation partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation charity, the leading international charity dedicated to giraffe conservation and management in the wild. In this way, Glenmorangie is supporting efforts to protect giraffes in the wild in Africa.
