New Limited Release from Lochlea Distillery! – Abbey Whisky News

It’s hard to believe that we’re now onto the ‘Second Crop’ of Sowing Edition from Lochlea distillery!

This latest limited release was crafted from 1st fill ex-bourbon barrels located higher up in the Lochlea warehouse than the single malt that was used to produce the 2022 edition. The extra heat up high gives for a faster maturation and combined with the older spirit resulted well and is said to show a clear progression from the previous year’s edition.

It’s fabulous to watch Lochlea distillery grow, this latest release sounds like another great single malt from this exciting Lowland distillery.

*UPCOMING RELEASE* 21 year old American Oak ex-Bourbon, HH0229 – Tasmanian Whisky News

The Sullivans Cove 21 Year Old, HH0229

“Our goal is to make the best whisky that we can, but what’s a goal if you don’t stick to it? This whisky symbolises our commitment to just that. Sticking to a whisky, one barrel at a time, for 21 years. That’s just over 7,700 times the sun rose and set on this barrel, 7,700 opportunities a Distillery Manager of the past could have decanted and sold it. It takes a lot of patience.”

– Heather Tillott, Distillery Manager

HH0229 tells a story two decades old, born by the waterfront in our first home, this cask has been with us from the very early days of our distillery. The benefits of long term maturation are abundant in this cask. It has passed through the hands of trusted Distillery Managers over the years, and it is only now, when it has reached its peak of flavour and harmony, that we pass it to you.

HH0229 breaks the mould of what you expect to taste in a 21 year old whisky. Our textural and fruity Sullivans Cove spirit meets an astoundingly soft touch of confection-driven American oak. At an incredible 21 years old, HH0229 was matured in an American oak ex-Bourbon barrel, bottled at 48.3%, and with a yield of just 209 bottles.

A fine example of this era of Sullivans Cove production in its tropical-sweet earth-textural nature. It’s absolutely delicious, tropical bliss.” – Heather Tillott, Distillery Manager

Deep amber in colour, the nose opens with immediate sherry cask influence – rich red fruit, cocoa, cherry, pecan, caramel and sweet pipe tobacco.

On the palate it is intense and expressive, with dark chocolate, espresso, citrus, polished wood, more fragrant tobacco and an all-encompassing Islay peat smoke. With time in the glass and a few drops of water added more herbal notes and a sea-breeze/oyster freshness are apparent.

The finish is never-ending, with old fishing nets, tar, honey, black tea and chocolate almonds lingering on. Truly a wonderful example of the legendary Port Ellen Distillery’s output.

Port Ellen Distillery was established by Alexander K. Mackay on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay at Port Ellen in 1825. Port Ellen was a malt whisky distillery but closed in 1983 and whilst some of the distillery buildings remain Port Ellen drum maltings occupy part of the site. During the winter of 1823-24 James Fox tested his newly designed spirit safe at Port Ellen Distillery prior to its introduction in all Scottish licenced distilleries by 1825 in order to comply with enactment of the Excise Act of 1823. Thus Port Ellen Distillery was the first Scottish distillery to install a spirit safe and James Fox was paid £428 for his work. Official bottlings of Port Ellen single malt whisky include the Port Ellen Annual Release and independent release from Hunter Laing & Co. are highly prized.
