NORTH HIGHLAND BLEND BATCH 2

Hot on the heels of the popular North Highland Blended Malt, the Thompson Bros. have knocked together another batch! Utilising the same distillates as Batch 1, both matured in refill Hogsheads.  The highland malts were then juiced up in a very, very freshly emptied refill sherry butt, resulting in fuzzy stone fruit flavours and early 2000 Supermarket deals.  The blend has been slowly diluted in a cask to an extra quaffable 44.4%ABV.

NOSE: Kiwi, starfruit, crushed white grapes, Loire Chenin Blanc, wet marble, lemon juice and a hint of salty brine. Sharp gooseberries, osmanthus flower and oak char.

PALATE: Citrus peel; Bergamot and grapefruit, some wood spice & charred oak. Pineapple, green pepper, blackthorn salt, white grape juice, chamomile and starfruit.

FINISH: Big lemony hit with chamomile, kiwi & white pepper. Great length and a gentle waxiness.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces 2024 Parker’s Heritage Collection® Limited Edition Bottling – American Whiskey News

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces 2024 Parker’s Heritage Collection® Limited Edition Bottling

18th Edition of the annual ultra-premium release is a 14-year-old Malt Whiskey Finished in Reconstructed Heavy Toast Cognac Barrels

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (August 27, 2024) – Heaven Hill Distillery announced today the release of the 18th edition of the Parker’s Heritage Collection® featuring a 14-year-old Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey Finished in Reconstructed Heavy Toast Cognac Barrels. The 18th Edition is an allocated product and will be available nationally and internationally in limited quantities at the suggested retail price of $169.99. Like previous editions, a portion of the proceeds will continue to support ALS research and patient care in honor of Parker Beam, late Master Distiller Emeritus.

This edition is made possible due to the continued partnership with Master Blender Alain Royer, who Heaven Hill has partnered with on two previous Parker’s Heritage Collection releases. It is comprised of 14-year-old Malt Whiskey that was barreled in March 2009. The 128 Malt Whiskey barrels were dumped and then finished in 56 larger, reconstructed heavy toast Cognac barrels for almost four months. The original Malt Whiskey barrels are from the fourth floor of Rickhouse O and the sixth floor of Rickhouse Q. Once re-barreled, the Cognac barrels aged in Rickhouse H1 on the fifth floor. The mashbill for this edition is comprised of 65% malted barley and 35% corn and bottled at 107 proof.  The Whiskey is described as rich and velvety with flavors of molasses and bittersweet chocolate followed by cloves and nutmeg. At bottling, the liquid was non-chill filtered to preserve the natural flavors of the aging process.

“We are excited to continue to work with Alain Royer as we look for more ways to innovate with barrel finished products,” said Susan Wahl, Vice President of American Whiskey at Heaven Hill. “In honoring Parker’s enduring legacy, Heaven Hill Distillery remains steadfast in our commitment to uphold the high standards he set. With this latest expression, we celebrate Parker’s influence on and dedication to innovating outside of Heaven Hill’s traditional Bourbon mashbills by crafting a Whiskey that embodies his spirit as we continue to support ALS research and patient care.”

The late Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam, for whom the acclaimed series is named, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2010. Since 2013, proceeds from sales of the Parker’s Heritage Collection have raised more than $1.3 million dollars toward ALS research and patient care through contributions made by Heaven Hill for each bottle purchased. With this edition, Heaven Hill will again contribute a portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold to the ALS Association. Packaged in the same upscale 750ml bottle as the previous seventeen editions, but with a garnet-colored label, the newest Parker’s Heritage Collection is available in a three-bottle case and will arrive at retail locations starting in September. With previous releases having won multiple awards from Whisky Advocate, Whisky Magazine, the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the series stands as some of the most critically lauded American Whiskeys in recent memory. Past bottlings have won awards ranging from “Best Special Barrel Finished Bourbon” and “Best North American Whiskey” to “American Whiskey of the Year” and “Best of Show, Brown Spirits.”

New “ULTRA” Releases from Murray McDavid at Aberdeen Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

Murray McDavid brings you exceptional vintage Scotch whiskies created over decades. These ULTRA-aged whiskies have been matured in oak casks lying quietly in dark, atmospheric Victorian warehouses in Scotland – they are a true product of TIME. Whilst the busy world outside has rushed by, the precious spirit inside these casks has slowly and silently developed remarkable depth and beautiful flavours, that go far and beyond.

Caperdonich 50 Years Old
Distilled in 1972, this Caperdonich spirit was filled into an American oak hogshead to start its epic journey. The mellow nature of American oak has been the perfect vessel to elegantly evolve and enhance the classic flavours of this heritage single malt. At 50 years old, this surviving cask of rare, vintage Caperdonich Distillery spirit has been fondly nurtured over decades as it’s matured into a charming and characterful dram, representing a bygone era. A beautiful bouquet of fresh peaches and apricot cream, sweet barley sugars and vanilla pods are followed by pineapple cubes, sweet ginger and pine. Intensely tropical and vibrant aromas follow on the palate and, after a little time in the glass, the whisky blossoms to reveal sumptuous honied cereal and buttery pastry, that deliver a delicious fruity and satisfyingly long waxy finish. All orders will be shipped from the 9th of September.

Macallan 30 Years Old

This rare and precious Macallan spirit started its 30-year journey in an American oak ex-bourbon hogshead. It then lay for seven years in an Oloroso Sherry cask, where it was elegantly infused with mellow fruitiness. To conclude its three-decade journey and to add a layer of opulence, it was finally filled into a PX Sherry cask from Murray McDavid’s wood partners Ximénez-Spínola in Jerez, Spain.  Indulgent fresh honeycomb and sweet toffee aromas gently rise from the glass, followed by creamy barley sugars that bind beautifully with a hint of fig and pastry. Moreish baking spice of cinnamon and nutmeg follow to tingle the palate, along with milk chocolate and a suggestion of coffee and ginger biscuits. The satisfying finish is generous, leaving you with a memorable kiss of sweet Sherry.   The orders will be shipped from the 9th of September.

Glen Scotia 33 Years Old Ultra
This rare 33-year-old Campbeltown spirit was distilled in 1991. It was initially filled into an American oak ex-bourbon hogshead, where this hearty single malt rested and gradually mellowed during its first two decades. In 2011, it began its next chapter of maturation and flavour development when it was carefully transferred into a French Vosne-Romanée red wine barrique from the world-famous and highly celebrated wine-producing region of Burgundy. Intense aromas of baked plum and fruity tamarind spice are beautifully paired with cherries, dark chocolate and faint suggestions of a freshly cut cigar. The rich and herbaceous wild berries follow through to juicy raisins and salted caramel in the robust and complex palate. Ripe berries, nutmeg, brown sugar and dried stone fruits finish this spectacular, charismatic dram. All orders will be shipped from the 9th of September.

Scotch Malt Whisky Society ‘Get ready for the next epiphany’ – Scotch Whisky News

Have you ever come across two whiskies that seem like identical twins – same distillery, same date of distillation, even the same cask type – yet each has its own distinct character? Even with the same origins, time treats each single cask differently, creating unique outcomes even when they start out with the same origins.

It’s a form of nature and nurture in a bottle – the same beginning, but a journey that shapes the whiskies in different ways. These non-identical twins are all perfect examples of how whisky keeps us intrigued and coming back for more.

New Linkwood, Benrinnes & Mannochmore at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Benrinnes 12 Year Old “Cane & Grain” (Mahler-Besse) Single Cask Plantation Rum Barrel Aged Cask Strength Non Chillfiltred Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $79.99 View

Benrinnes is a historical and unique distillery in the Speyside region. Founded in 1826 and completely destroyed by a flood in 1829, the distillery was rebuilt in 1835 a few kilometers from the original site. Once again devastated by flames in 1896, it was entirely reconstructed in 1956. Benrinnes gained international recognition for the finesse of its whiskies produced through unique 2.5-ish distillations and traditional worm tub cooling. This incredible barrel of Benrinnes was purchased exclusively by the renowned Bordeaux Negociant Mähler-Besse. Aged for its entire 12 years in barrels that had previously held rum from the famous Plantation Rum producer based in Cognac. Distilled on June 10th, 2010, it was bottled in 2022 without coloring or chill-filtration at a natural cask strength of 56.2% abv.

2009 Linkwood 13 Year Old “Cane & Grain” Single Cask Ruby Port Cask Aged Cask Strength Non Chillfiltered Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $79.99 View

Renowned for the quality and aging potential of its whiskies, the Linkwood distillery was founded in 1821 outside of Elgin. Just 2% of its production is designed for single malt production, while the remaining portion in the various Diageo blends like Johnnie Walker. Disilled in November of 2009 its spent 13 years maturing in high quality Ruby Port casks, and was bottled in January 2023 at cask strength of 58.2%. Bottled straight from the cask, this single malt is non-chill-filtered, and no colorants have been added. It was bottled exclusively for famed Bordeaux negociant Mähler-Besse. This single cask yields 277 bottles. K&L is the exclusive US source.

2008 Mannochmore 14 Year Old “Cane & Grain” Single Cask Marsala Barrique Aged Cask Strength Non Chillfiltered Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) $89.99 View

The relatively young Mannochmore distillery was built in 1971 by Haig & Co. A stone’s throw from Glenlossie and a skip, hop, jump to Longmorn, its part of a group of core workhorse malts in northern Speyside that don’t get much fanfare outside of concoisseur and collectors circles. Only a tiny fraction of its production is destined for single malt production and even fewer sold as single casks. Their 3 sets of paired stills produce a fruit forward malty style of whisky that works wonders in high quality oak like this one. Distilled on February 5th of 2008 and aged for 14 years in freshly dumped Marsala barrique it was bottled in January 2023 at 51.6%. This single cask produced just 299 bottles bottled exclusively for famed Bordeaux negociante Mähler-Besse. Bottled straight from the cask, this single malt is non-chill-filtered, and no colorants have been added.
