Glen Moray tees up new golf partnership with the Senior Open

Speyside single malt also backs Paul Lawrie’s Tartan Pro Tour

Edward Kitson, Championship Director, The Senior Open; Jamie Stewart, Commercial Director, LMB-UK

Glen Moray single malt Scotch whisky is taking a swing at the world of golf after being unveiled today (30th May) as the new Official Whisky of the Senior Open presented by Rolex.

The three-year, six figure partnership will commence this summer when the prestigious championship – Europe’s only senior major – returns to the home of golf in Scotland and the spectacular setting of Carnoustie Golf Links.

Taking place from 25th to 28th July, an expected crowd of 35,000 spectators can look forward to visiting Glen Moray’s whisky bar in the Championship Village – alongside four days of world class play and a rare opportunity to see some of golf’s greatest legends in action.

The Glen Moray team – including Global Brand Ambassador Iain Allan – will be on hand with some first-class hospitality, serving up a taste of the distillery’s famously smooth and fruity single malt whiskies, plus a specially commissioned cocktail designed to refresh fans over the four-day event.

In additional news, Glen Moray has also been confirmed as the official whisky of the Tartan Pro Tour: the Scottish-based development tour for male and female golfers, founded by golfing icon and The Open Champion in 1999, Paul Lawrie.

Teeing off in May 2024 and touring 13 Scottish golf courses during the year, Glen Moray will be on hand with the drams at each – as well as being title sponsor of the brand’s ‘home leg’ event at the Nairn Dunbar Golf Course near the distillery.

Crafted in the historic town of Elgin since 1897 and now one of the UK’s top selling single malt whiskies, Glen Moray will be supporting its new golf partnerships with a marketing campaign that explores the deep Scottish roots shared by whisky and golf, and the joys of a ‘Classic Round’ – both of golf and of whisky. This will be rolled out across advertising, digital and PR channels as well as a range of trade activations around the UK.

Jamie Stewart, UK Commercial Director of Glen Moray parent company LMB-UK said: ‘We are thrilled to be joining the Senior Open Championship and an event that is renowned for its world class golf and convivial atmosphere, set within some of the UK’s most famous courses. Golf and Scotch whisky have so much in common, from our reputation as Scottish icons around the world to our shared ability to gather friends together to enjoy good times. As the Championship’s official whisky, we are very much looking forward to celebrating these shared values, and to introducing our single malt whiskies and the story of Glen Moray to golf fans. We’re also very proud to be backing Scottish golfers at the early stage of their career through our partnership with Paul Lawrie’s Tartan Pro Tour.’

Edward Kitson, Championship Director at the European Tour Group, added: ‘The Senior Open presented by Rolex is where legends of the game test their skills on some of the finest courses in the UK. It’s only fitting that a legendary Scottish whisky will also be there. We look forward to working together to showcase their products to the thousands of fans at Carnoustie, who can sample Glen Moray’s single malt whiskies when taking a break from watching the on-course action.’

Paul Lawrie also welcomed Glen Moray to the Tartan Pro Tour’s stable of sponsors. He said: ‘It’s great to have the support of Glen Moray as an event sponsor. We look forward to the Tour’s first visit to Nairn Dunbar Golf Club on the Moray Firth, close to the Glen Moray Distillery. The Tartan Pro Tour is becoming ever more popular for players aspiring to the highest levels of professional golf and having a global brand like Glen Moray backing the sport – through both the Tartan Pro Tour and the Senior Open – is great news.’

The Senior Open presented by Rolex is jointly owned by the European Tour Group and The R&A and is staged each July at one of the UK’s most iconic golf courses.

Crafted in the heart of Speyside since 1897, Glen Moray’s smooth, fruity single malt whisky embodies the classic Speyside style. It has been made on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin for over 125 years using skills passed down through the generations and a process that includes double distillation in copper stills and careful ageing in traditional warehouses. The distillery’s craftsmen are experts in maturing and marrying many different types of casks, creating the array of flavours which inspire Glen Moray’s extensive range. Inclusive and inviting, Glen Moray is perfect for enjoying on its own and in cocktails, by whisky aficionados and new whisky fans alike.

The Senior Open Presented by Rolex

The Senior Open Presented by Rolex will take place at Carnoustie Golf Links for the first time since 2016 as the iconic Scottish venue hosts Europe’s only Senior Major Championship from July 25-28, 2024.

Carnoustie previously hosted the Championship in 2010 and 2016, with Germany’s Bernhard Langer triumphing first, then England’s Paul Broadhurst winning his maiden Senior Major most recently.

The 2023 Senior Open saw Germany’s Alex Čejka win the Senior Claret Jug for the first time, prevailing over Pádraig Harrington in a play-off.

Langer became the first golfer in history to win The Senior Open four times with his victory in 2019 at Royal Lytham & St Annes – moving ahead of Gary Player and Tom Watson with whom he previously shared three wins. The German also broke his own record of Senior Major Championship victories – securing his 11th at Royal Lytham & St Annes and since adding a 12th at the 2023 U.S. Senior Open.

Čejka’s victory in 2023 was the seventh consecutive European success in this event, adding to Langer’s victories in 2017 and 2019, Broadhurst’s win in 2016, Miguel Angel Jiménez’s triumph in 2018 on the Old Course at St Andrews, Stephen Dodd’s victory at Sunningdale in 2021 and Darren Clarke’s success at Gleneagles in 2022.

The Senior Open was introduced in 1987 at Turnberry in Ayrshire when Neil Coles, the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the European Tour group, won the inaugural title. This led, two years later, to the formal inception of what is now the Legends Tour.

SECURE A BOTTLE OF THE HEARACH

Bottles of The Hearach single malt whisky are presented in four different boxes, each featuring its own combination of photographic portraits. The word ‘Hearach’ means a native of Harris in Gaelic, so it was only right that we turned our lens upon our fellow islanders to capture the character of our local community.

Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be introducing them to you here in the Journal and on our social media channels, and sharing a little of their story. There are nineteen men and women in total, and together they’ve helped us embody the best of what it means to be a Hearach…

Laphroaig Scotch Whisky Introduces Càirdeas 2024 Cask Favourites – Islay Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig Scotch Whisky Introduces Càirdeas 2024 Cask Favourites

We are pleased to announce the introduction of the new Laphroaig Càirdeas 2024 Cask Favourites Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Available in US as of late June, the bottle is offered at 52.4% ABV and at a suggested retail price of $109.99 (700ml). Available on ReserveBar, preorder is live now.

For more than two centuries, Laphroaig’s master craftsmen have worked to shape this richly flavored Scotch whisky. This 10-year-old Càirdeas edition was created by Master Blender, Calum Fraser, to pay homage to the first Càirdeas offerings that made Laphroaig what it is today – a rich and distinct Scotch whisky.

Laphroaig Càirdeas 2024 Cask Favourites celebrates 30 years of friendship, a ten-year-old expression that pays homage to Laphroaig’s well-loved releases: 2019’s Triple Wood and 2021’s PX Cask. Married together by Master Blender, Calum Fraser, as an aged statement celebrating the very first Càirdeas expressions.

Developed in ex-Bourbon barrels, this single malt combines the distinctive peaty flavor of Laphroaig with notes of freshly ground ginger, charred citrus fruits, and a whisper of bonfire notes embers through on the finish. The celebratory malt is bottled at a fixed strength for a memorable experience to share with friends.

Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries that still uses a traditional malting floor, and this is where Laphroaig’s Càirdeas malt starts its life. It begins as malted barley, gently dried and infused by the thick smoke from our signature cold smoking process in our ancient peat kilns. It’s then mixed with the crisp waters of the Kilbride Stream, one of Islay’s unique natural features, before being distilled. The spirit is matured twice — first in over-charred first and second-fill ex-Bourbon barrels and quarter casks before being finished in PX casks, adding fruity sweetness, resulting in a whisky of greater depth, designed to be savored.

TASTING NOTES

Bold, pale gold in color.

Packed with quintessential smoky peat and charred citrus fruit aromas.

With notes of caramelized sugar and cinnamon dominate the nose.

Followed by delicate notes of hazelnut and honey sweetness.

A tannic oak paired with earthy peat and subtle sea-salt bring the whisky to a finish.

Laphroaig Scotch whisky has been dividing opinions since 1845, when Donald and Alexander Johnston first opened their distillery on the Isle of Islay. Its unique smoky taste can be attributed to the island’s peat. Rich in moss, lichen and heather, this peat is unlike anything found on the Scottish mainland. Good whisky needs good water, and the distillery has its own supply in the Kilbride stream which flows through the peat beds. It also needs experience, and with the wisdom of two centuries of craftsmanship, each expression of Laphroaig is a true masterpiece.
