“A wheated bourbon from the old Stitzel-Weller distillery. A gentle, richly-textured whisky, loaded with fruit and spice. Black raspberry jam, caramel apple and papaya, along with warming cinnamon and subtle teaberry, on nutty toffee, nougat and creamy vanilla. Spicy, polished oak finish. Superbly balanced, sophisticated and very drinkable. An outstanding whiskey!”

The Enduring Legacy Of Dewars A Company History by Ian Buxton – Scotch Whisky News

dewars

The Enduring Legacy Of Dewars- A Company History
Ian Buxton

The rags to riches story of John Dewar & Sons is probably the most colourful of any whisky company, largely owing to the remarkable talents of John Dewar’s two sons, John Alexander Dewar (who finished as Lord Forteviot) and his brother Thomas (who was created Lord Dewar of Homestall) – and as such provides a fascinating insight into the Scotch whisky industry during its formative and most colourful era.

The Dewar’s story is also a benchmark study in the history of advertising and marketing, in which dark arts Tommy Dewar was a pioneer. “If you don’t advertise you fossilise”, was one of his aphorisms, as were “advertising is to business what imagination is to poetry” and “keep advertising and advertising will keep you”.

In this extensive company history, leading whisky writer Ian Buxton tells the story for the first time, building on unique access to the Dewar company archives and bringing the story from the firm’s foundation in 1846 right up to the present day.

To quote Charles MacLean’s Foreword, “This is not only a beautiful book, it is engaging and informative.”

CONTENTS

Foreword by Charles MacLean

1. History: “Most men are great believers in heredity until the son makes a fool of himself.”

2. People: “No two men are alike, and both of them are glad of it.”

3. Aberfeldy Distillery: “We have a great regard for old age – when it is bottled.”

4. Dewar’s Blends: “We never brag about our long lineage, except upon the label.”

5. Awards: “The quality of the article should be its greatest advertisement.”

6. Timeline: “The only thing you can get in a hurry is trouble.”

Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V Available in British Columbia – Scotch Whisky News

Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V
PRICE: $599.00
CSPC: +952556
STATUS: Specialty Regular
SIZE: 3 x 750ml per case

In an already glittering crown of perfection, rests a natural phenomena, crafted by man, into a work of priceless value and rarity –Jim Beveridge, Master Blender, Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V Edition celebrates the first Royal Warrant granted to John Walker and Sons Ltd. to supply Scotch whisky to the British Royal Household in 1934, in recognition of the quality and appeal of its whisky. This exquisite spirit is handcrafted from rare whiskies produced only in distilleries that operated during the reign of King George V (1911 – 1936), including several which no longer exist.

Features some of the world’s rarest and most valuable whiskies, including whisky from the famed Port Ellen distillery, the stills of which are no longer operational.  Port Ellen represents a lost generation of Islay Whiskies and the smokiness, the peatiness is of a fundamentally more profound, complex nature than any other Islay Whisky.  Carefully handcrafted to recreate the Johnnie Walker blending style from the King George V era.  Oak casks dating back to last century have been used to age these precious whiskies from the four corners of Scotland. The result is a highly distinctive whisky, smooth with age, without the tannins associated with younger oak casks.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Profound smoky initial aroma followed by sweet, fresh fruit (apples, pears, bananas), malt characteristics; developing into rich dried fruit / spicy complexity (raisins, figs, cinnamon).

Palate: Smooth with a rich, fruity sweetness. Warming with subtle flavours of sandalwood and smoke.

Taste: Powerful, complex, rich and smooth

Finish: Mouthwarming and lingering rich peaty finish.

With Water: Releases new flavours, more fresh fruitiness and more smoke on the palate. Outstanding.
