News From The Adelphi Distillery Company – Scotch Whisky News

untitled1

Dear all,

It has been a few months since you last received an email from us but I can promise you that we have been hard at work sourcing and bottling some very exciting new whiskies.

In February we bottled the following new whiskies:

Bowmore 2001 8yr old refill sherry (limited UK stock available)
Bunnahabhain 2000 9yr old 1st fill sherry (previous Dancey Man offer, limited UK stock available)
Bruichladdich 1990 19yr old refill bourbon (very limited UK stock available)
Glenlivet 1978 31yr old refill bourbon (UK stock available)
Glenallachie 1973 36yr old refill bourbon (very limited UK stock available)
Aultmore 1974 35yr old 1st fill bourbon (sold out)

This was followed in March by some more bottlings:

Breath of the Isles 1995 14yr old refill bourbon (UK stock available)
Macallan 1995 14yr old refill sherry (sold out)
Longmorn 1992 17yr old 1st fill bourbon (UK stock available)
Bunnahabhain 1968 41yr old refill sherry (UK stock available)

If you would like prices on any of the above, just let me know. For this month we would like to offer one of the best Longmorns we have ever tasted. From a 1st fill bourbon hogshead, this has a great colour and is packed full of flavours.

Longmorn 1992 £66.98 inc. VAT
17 year old Speyside 53.9% vol

1 of only 186 bottles from cask no. 48430

Our overall comment on this malt was ‘a sunny day in the Highlands’. The deep gold colour suggests that the ex-Bourbon hogshead it is drawn from is 1st fill.

The first impression is gorse flowers, macaroons and almond paste, with fragrant jasmine behind, some ash, and after a while, light sponge.

Water introduces a pine-like note, heather flowers, yielding to buttery tablet with tinned mandarins.

The latter give a fresh acidity to the taste, which starts sweet, but not cloying and drying elegantly to a medium length finish. Well balanced and stylish.

In addition to this, I am delighted to announce the launch of Adelphi’s Fascadale 10yr old single Island malt 46% Batch 2. Batch 1 was a huge success and we are delighted to have been able to secure another excellent 10 casks for batch 2. This is due to be bottled next week and should be available in most of your stockists by the middle of May. The price is still to be confirmed, but please let me know if you would like to be notified when it is released.

Furthermore, we are planning a 3rd whisky for this range (to accompany the new Fascadale and the sadly departed Laudale) – more news next month!

Whisky travel continues: Holland for a week in March, Washington DC for a weekend earlier this month, and Limburg this weekend.

I look forward to seeing some of you in Limburg this weekend and/or Speyside next weekend.

All the best,

 Alex.

(LFW reports);

Carn Mor bottlings are a little bit special for their presentation, a nice, different tapered bottle with antique label and subtle ‘fluff’ and a none-too-fussy box gets the thumbs-up from me.

Here’s a classic Glenrothes, bourbon cask matured and delicious. An oily nose, glenrothes-fruity with a distinct whiff of household-cleaner smoke, very inviting and with water a sherbet sweetness rises.

Taste is all fruitiness, oranges and tropical fruits with cream, a passion fruit Solera (ice cream lolly). Very enjoyable.

On the flavour map I’d plonk it in square D4 Complex, Light and Delicate.

Loch Fyne Whiskies Stocks Mortlach G&M 1938 70yo 20cl – Scotch Whisky News

logo1_fine11

Mortlach G&M 1938 70yo 46.1%alc. 20cl

Please note that this is a 20cl bottle

Believed to be the oldest Scotch ever bottled!

The 70cl bottle at £10000 will be released soon.

(Loch Fyne Whiskies reports);

A very robust aroma, no difficulty with ageing here at all. Oak first, but then an overture of oak and tobacco, old Victorian Scottishness (gunrooms, worn tartan carpet, tobacco stained paintwork, wet leather and stuff like that). Then the smell that that old-style green garden string has – tarry, and now potting sheds with geraniums. Overall it’s the smell of whisky you recall from you childhood days.

Absolutely marvellous! The list goes on and is probably endless, ooop! here’s a little peat now, oh! and some toffee! Flippin’ heck this is a new experience completely.

It can’t just be suggestion but these ancient whiskies really do drum up evocative images of the time they were made, compare the Springbank 1919 (old army belts), this 1938 has a more Victorian feel, certainly in black & white. Ace.

Hard to place on the flavour map, rich anyway.

New Glenfarclas 40 Years Old Launched – Scotch Whisky News

gf_logo

New Glenfarclas 40 Years Old Launched

Glenfarclas have added a new 40 Years Old whisky to their portfolio of premium Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Glenfarclas 40 Years Old has been bottled at 46% vol. from casks filled in the late 1960s, and selected by George S. Grant, Director of Sales and the sixth generation of the family which own and manage the distillery.

With good stocks of casks filled in the 1960s, the distillery is now able to offer whisky with a 40 years old age statement as part of their core range. This whisky will be available worldwide, with a quarter of production destined for North America.
George Grant’s tasting notes for this new expression read: ‘The nose is reminiscent of relaxing in an old leather armchair, while eating walnuts and chocolate-covered raisins. It has a sweet initial taste – orange segments dipped in liquid chocolate – then a lovely flavour of burnt brown sugar at the back of the mouth. The dry finish oozes big tannins and more rich dark cocoa beans. Let this whisky breathe a little or add a drop or two of water to fully open up the dram.’

Glenfarclas 40 Years Old will be formally launched on the 29th April 2010, with a consumer tasting at the distillery during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Places at this unique tasting, hosted by George Grant, are available to book via the festival’s website.

Glenfarclas 40 Years Old is presented in the Glenfarclas amber bottle and a ruby gift tube, with a design akin to the Glenfarclas 10 Years Old. By deliberately not over-packaging this old whisky, J. & G. Grant are able to offer the Glenfarclas 40 Years Old at a competitive UK recommended retail price of GBP 350.00. As George Grant explained, ‘Compared to other whiskies of a similar age, this has been priced to open and enjoy.’

For those looking to try before purchasing a bottle, The Coburg Bar at the Connaught Hotel, in London’s Mayfair, and the Mash Tun Pub in Aberlour, Speyside, are already offering drinkers the chance to enjoy this exceptional whisky by the dram.

William Grant & Sons Ltd 25 Year Old Blend Commemorate Centenary – Scotch Whisky News

Girvan Distillery

THE SPIRIT OF CELEBRATION

Grant’s launches rare and distinctive ultra premium expression to commemorate centenary

Family-owned distiller William Grant & Sons Ltd. today announces the launch of Grant’s 25 Year Old, the ultra premium blended Scotch whisky designed to complement Grant’s award-winning range.

Grant’s 25 Year Old celebrates over a century and five generations of the Grant’s family, as well as their collective contribution to creating the finest Scotch whisky.  It marks 100 years since Charles Gordon (son-in-law of William Grant) set off on a 12 month trip to take Grant’s to the world – sowing the seeds for what has become the world’s most loved family whisky brand.

Expertly blended by Master Blender, Brian Kinsman, this rare and patiently crafted blend contains some of the world’s most highly-prized and distinctive malt and grain whiskies, including the first ever laid down at Grant’s Girvan distillery as well as rare whiskies from distilleries no longer in existence. Each individually numbered batch has been married in oak tuns for several months for enhanced depth and complexity, producing an exceptional whisky full of warmth and character.

“This exceptional 25 year old blended Scotch whisky is our way of celebrating each family member’s contribution to the success of Grant’s whisky and our unique family history,” comments Peter Gordon, the fifth generation descendent of the distillery’s founder, William Grant and current company Chairman. “Distilled in Girvan – a site built by our current life president Charles Gordon – Grant’s 25 Year Old contains 25 whiskies from every region of Scotland with the most unique element being our Girvan Grain – the backbone of all our blends.”

Encased within an individually hand-finished cobalt blue presentation box adorned with champagne gold engraved metalwork, Grant’s 25 Year Old is presented in a bespoke glass bottle designed to perfectly showcase the rich amber of the whisky.

The embossed tree on the bottle represents the contributions of many branches of the Grant’s family and reflects the time, care and craftsmanship that are the key ingredients of this fine and exceptional blend. The heavyweight glass, tactile emboss and deep base give a substantial feel in the hand and the finely engraved stopper proudly crowns what is Grant’s most prized whisky to date.

Just over 2,000 bottles of Grant’s 25 Year Old will be available exclusively in the world’s most prestigious airports from June 2010 until the end of 2011, before a limited number will travel from the distillery to select retailers and high-end establishments around the world. It has a recommended retail price of £145 per bottle.

Notes to Editors

Grant’s 25 year old

As you would expect from a precious blend of such age, it exudes elegance and refinement. In the glass, it glints deep bronze, its character immediate on the nose with deft balanced notes of fragrant summer peach blossom and polished leather. On the palate, there is cinnamon and a touch of ginger bite along with a fresh and mellow sweetness, followed by a finish of spices that lingers on the tongue.

Notes: Spicy cinnamon and a touch of ginger along with a fresh and mellow sweetness

Grant’s is produced by William Grant & Sons, an award-winning family-owned distiller founded by William Grant in 1886 and today still controlled by his direct descendants.  The deliciously complex and smooth taste of Grant’s Blended Scotch Whisky is down to the way it is made from a recipe created more than 100 years ago by William Grant. Passed down from generation to generation, today it is the expert skills of our Master Blender along with a team of craftsmen, who keep alive William Grant’s pioneering spirit and his passion for blending the finest whisky.

Grant’s award-winning range of cask finished and aged blended Scotch whiskies include Grant’s Family Reserve, the world’s oldest and most popular family owned Scotch. Grant’s Cask Reserves, created by ‘finishing’ Grant’s Family Reserve in either ale or sherry casks before bottling and Grant’s 12 Year Old is the only blended whisky to spend an extra finishing period in American oak casks, producing a full bodied Scotch of exceptional richness.

Five generations and over 100 years since its creation, Grant’s Family Reserve Blended Scotch reasserted its credentials as one of the whisky industry’s greats by scooping Gold at the prestigious 2009 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). The International Wine and Spirit Competition Medals and trophies are the most prestigious honours awarded in the trade, representing the best of the best in the world of wine and spirits.

About Murray McDavid

Murray McDavid are Independent Bottlers with a difference. The tradition of independent bottling goes back 150 years and was, until fairly recently, the only source for many of Scotland’s finest malts. The practice of distilleries bottling their own malts started in the 60s, but only became a major event in the last few years. Independent bottlers offer the consumer many things. They offer the opportunity to taste some of the more esoteric malts not bottled by their owners. They offer the chance to try well known and widely available brands at a different age, a different strength, possibly even a different type of barrel than the distillery bottled product.
