The Whisky Exchange Amrut Special Reserve Bottling – Indian Whisky News

Amrut Special Reserve Tasting Notes

AUTHOR: Tim F

After a slight (ok, considerable) delay, the final TWE 10th anniversary bottling has finally arrived. Amrut has been one of the major success stories in the UK market over the last couple of years, and we’re delighted to present our own Amrut Special Reserve from this up-and-coming superstar distillery.

Amrut Special Reserve Cask Strength, TWE 10th Anniversary, 63%

Nose: Rich, with strong natural caramel and malt loaf aromas. Honeysuckle, baked pastry and polished wood. A couple of minutes’development brings baked apple and clove oil – leave it for longer and notes of damson sponge cake and an almost rum-like molasses quality emerge. Water adds a creamy character and reveals the sponge more quickly.

Palate: Good weight. Very, very powerful, dry and warming at cask strength, with roasted malt flavours, assertive oak and a strong dash of black pepper. Water, however, brings out a delicious honeyed malt character, with bourbonesque notes of seasoned wood, scones, plummy fruits, a wisp of woodsmoke & leafy hints. A picnic on a park bench.

Finish: A bit too hot to handle at full strength. When water is added (and this swims very well), the finish becomes a far more pleasing intermingling of honey, malt and oak.

Comment: A mature malt, confident and well-rounded. Possibly a bit over-assertive at its eye-watering full strength, but it really blossoms with water. A hugely enjoyable unpretentious dram, more than making up in exuberance what it might lack in sophistication.

OK, enough from me – have a great weekend.  I’m off to Wales for a week with my good lady – will post again when I get back.

Cheers,

Tim

Have a great week off Tim!

Introducing Highland Park Saint Magnus – Scotch Whisky News

august-magnus-top-banner

A note from Gerry Tosh:

I wrote in November of last year from deepest darkest Canada in some bar Cadet Wheelock led me astray in (shame on you Wheelock) about Earl Magnus, a high-strength, limited edition Highland Park which followed hot on the footsteps of Hjarta. Earl Magnus was the first of a trilogy; it sold out very quickly and has recently been awarded Gold Best in Class at the International Wine & Spirits Competition.

It is my great privilege to introduce to you the second in the series; Saint Magnus is a vatting bottled at 55% abv. The whisky has been largely matured in Spanish oak casks, of which approximately 20% were first-fill. The youngest whisky in the vatting dates from 1998.

Saint Magnus is one of six saintly Norsemen born in the 11th and 12th centuries when the Orkney Islands belonged to Norway. Saint Magnus was murdered by his treacherous cousin Haakon and was canonized only 20 years later. His influence spread far and wide; more than 20 churches have been dedicated to Saint Magnus. The forename became popular in Orkney, most notably in the case of Magnus Eunson, our man forever associated with the founding of Highland Park distillery in 1798.

magnus-bottle
The whisky has been created by my mate Max MacFarlane, Whisky Maker extraordinaire, and is bottled at 55%. These are his thoughts on the tasting notes for Saint Magnus:

Appearance: Copper toned honey, clear and bright.

Nose: At natural strength there is terrific intensity with classic dried fruits and honey sweetness. Thereafter glorious notes of cinnamon, dried apple and hints of exotic fruits emerge, followed by a whiff of aromatic smoke.

Palate: Immediately intense and rich, the whisky lingers on the palate emphasizing the perfect balance between sweetness and aromatic smoke.

Finish: Long and gently smoky.

Saint Magnus is available at £85 per bottle and is limited to 11,994 bottles.

Loch Fyne Whiskies Stocks Ballechin #5 (peated Edradour) – Scotch Whisky News

logo1_fine3

Ballechin #5 (peated Edradour) OB 46%alc.

LFW comments;

The Festival of Ballechin, here at Loch Fyne Whiskies, celebrates the arrival of a new bottling and we are clearing up after the arrival of the latest of Andrew Symington & Edradour’s ‘Discovery Series’. Much-peated Ballechin #5 is hewn from a Marsala cask offered at 46%, unchillfiltered and, as it says on the tube, is “natural colour” – unlike the colour of the tube, which is not natural.

Contrasting with #4 (from Oloroso sherry wood) the sweet, fortified, Italian wine cask has not contributed much to the whisky; it’s primarily peaty, not so much neat on the nose but when tasted and nosed with water it’s very peaty. There are distinct fruit notes (as cherry Tunes® – menthol sweets) and other esters with water added. Overall it’s sweet peat and will be another big seller in the shop – after the application of a petit gout…

On the flavour map it’s in D10:
on the smoky side of Light and Smoky

Douglas Laing September 2010 Provenace Bottlings – Scotch Whisky News

provenance_range

Dear Customer,

For our September releases we are pleased bring to your attention three (3) new bottlings under the PROVENANCE label.

Tasting Notes:

PRV 0642 Mortlach 12 Year Old
Spicy and citric initially on the nose –it warms to homebaked gingerbread, jam and honey. The crunched sugar style palate is equally sweet, still spiced and enticing with a finish that roundly brings together all those flavours on burnt toast. (F)

PRV 0644 Arran 12 Year Old
Opens fresh and fruity on the nose with fresh apples & pears – running to a stewed fruit quality plus toffee. The palate is round and sweet with a gristy character and carries a honey and vanilla character. The finish is light and pleasing, still sweet & fresh. (J)

PRV 0648 Laphroaig 9 Year Old
Opens distinctly sweetly with honey and vanilla plus distant smoke and its beach bonfire quality appearing late. The palate is clean and fresh, still sweet and slowly develops to burnt cookies and soft tar. Sweet smoke, soot and dry ashes continue on the finish, where they run and run. (J)

We hope you will appreciate this new selection.

All best wishes,
Fred H Laing
