A New Limited Expression From The Dalmore – Scotch Whisky News

dalmore-stag1

The dawn of a new Dalmore.

The dawn has been worshipped by civilisations for millennia. It is fitting then, that Eos, Titan goddess of the dawn, should lend her name to our 59 year old single malt, an expression to be equally revered.

Sister to Selene, our highly prized 1951 vintage, Eos was selected from the same two outstanding sherry casks. Having been left to slumber for another year, the whiskies are now even more intense and evocative.

Just 20 decanters will ever see the light of day. To find out more about The Dalmore Eos, please visit www.thedalmore.com/eos or email eos@thedalmore.com.

Availability varies by market.

If you’d like to join The Dalmore Custodians, a select group of individuals with an appetite for exceptional single malt, please visit www.thedalmore.com and follow the links.

SOLSTICE AND HORIZON – TWO NEW WINTER WARMERS FROM BENRIACH – Scotch Whisky News

SOLSTICE AND HORIZON – TWO NEW WINTER WARMERS FROM BENRIACH

IT’S the winter solstice today (December 21), so it’s serendipitous that BenRiach is launching two exciting new products bearing these inspirational names.

Launched on the shortest day of the year, BenRiach Solstice, with its connotations of re-birth and celebration, is a perfect malt for the midwinter, a 15 year-old heavily-peated port while BenRiach Horizons is a 12 year-old triple-distilled malt – a new and original product line which has never been done before by BenRiach.

The bottling strength for both 70cl bottles is 50%. Both are cased in a rigid gift box and a limited quantity is available worldwide.

Marketing Manager Kerry White explained: “These are two incredibly exciting new products to be savoured on cold winter nights.

“Unusually for a Speyside distillery, we distil whisky from both styles of malted barley, non-peated and peated, enabling us to capture the defining taste and aroma of peat reek in a few special bottlings.

“BenRiach Solstice is one such expression. Distilled from heavily-peated malted barley, the whisky has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in Aged Tawny Port pipes sourced from Portugal’s Douro region. The overall maturation period, across both styles of wood, is a minimum of 15 years.

“Horizons, the 12 year-old triple-distilled BenRiach, is one of the most unique whiskies to be released by the distillery. Traditionally, most single malt whiskies are distilled twice, but during the late 1990s BenRiach experimented with some limited production runs of triple-distilled whisky, and we have allowed the whisky to mature for a minimum of 12 years before giving you the opportunity to sample the fruits of our labour.”

Kerry added: “Triple-distilled means the raw spirit produced comes off the still at a higher alcohol strength, and the whisky is more fruity and floral than a traditional double-distilled BenRiach – quite different in character, and certainly a rarity amongst single malt whiskies.

“Originally matured in ex-bourbon barrels, the triple-distilled BenRiach has been allowed to finish in Oloroso Sherry casks, and has derived a number of distinctive flavours and aromas specific to the sherry casks.”

Claymore Newsletter #6 – 1975 Dallas Dhu Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

The Claymore Times

~ All The News That’s Fit To Drink ~

 Hello malt lovers

Here’s another wee whisky that the LCBO has just put on their shelves (5 stores only), a very rare 1975 DALLAS DHU  from a distillery that went silent in 1983.  Fortunately we still had a few bottles put aside and some have been shipped to Canada for release this week. Very limited numbers, if you’re a collector you may wish to buy two bottles – one as an investment and the other to enjoy.

I know what you’re thinking, “how come all these whiskies are so expensive?” and this one is no exception at $250 per bottle but, don’t be dismayed we have a 10yo Benromach coming over for Robert Burns day in January which is not only priced very reasonably (without being parsimonious) but it’s also being called ‘dead sexy’ by some connoisseurs.

Let me know if you’re attending any tastings locally and I’ll publish to the group and try and join you.

Regards,

Bill

1975 Dallas Dhu (LCBO # 208603)

History

Dallas Dhu was the idea of an entrepreneur named Alexander Edward. In 1898, he built two new distilleries on land outside Forres – Benromach and Dallasmore. Both were in response to the demand for malt whisky for blending.
Before Dallasmore went into production in 1899, Edward sold the distillery to the Glasgow blending firm of Wright & Greig Ltd. They wanted  the distillery to ensure a supply of malt for their popular blend, Roderick Dhu. To emphasise the link, they changed the distillery’s name to Dallas Dhu.

The distillery employed a manager, a brewer, and a number of other staff – around 15 men in all. These were divided up into different groups, each headed by a lead man. Workers included the maltman, the mashman, the stillman, the warehouseman and the cooper. The men were expected to turn their hand to anything from unloading barley and shovelling peat to rolling out the barrels. The exception was the taxman, he was employed by Customs and Excise and not the distillery, although the latter had to provide him with a house and office!

Dallas Dhu Distillery produced whisky from 1899 to 1983. The first barrel was filled on 3 June 1899, and the last on 16 March 1983. In the intervening years, it had a chequered existence. During the First World War it was closed. After the War, Wright & Greig sold it to J. P. O’Brien & Co Ltd of Glasgow, but they went into liquidation in 1921, and Dallas Dhu was sold to Benmore Distillery. The new owners invested heavily in developments to the site, including a new railway siding. But the Great Depression forced closure in the early 1930s. Soon after reopening production, the distillery was badly damaged by fire, on 9 April 1939. Production began again in 1947, but was finally closed in 1983, largely because of a water shortage caused by prolonged drought.

HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERIES ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF 2001 EDITION OF EVAN WILLIAMS SINGLE BARREL VINTAGE BOURBON – American Whisky News

HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERIES ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF 2001 EDITION OF EVAN WILLIAMS SINGLE BARREL VINTAGE BOURBON

2001-vintage

The 16th Annual Edition of the Award-Winning Vintage-Dated Bourbon to Begin Shipping After Holidays

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –   Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. announces the release of the 2001 edition of its highly acclaimed Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the 16th annual release of the series.

The world-renowned Single Barrel Bourbon has garnered many prestigious awards, including “Spirit of the Year – American Whiskey” from Food & Wine; “Domestic Whiskey of the Year” by Malt Advocate; and “Whiskey of the Year” by The Spirit Journal, the first Bourbon upon which the publication has bestowed this prestigious title. “Even though the mashbill—the grain recipe—is the same from year to year, we try to achieve a particular flavor profile with each vintage,” noted Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam, who along with his son Craig produces and selects each vintage from among Heaven Hill’s 900,000 barrels of aging Bourbon.  “And judging from the critical acclaim it’s received, it seems like we’ve been pretty successful with the vintage-dated concept behind Evan Williams Single Barrel.”

Heaven Hill, the nation’s largest remaining family-owned and operated, independent spirits producer and the world’s second-largest holder of aging Bourbon, offered a sneak peak of the latest vintage in the landmark series for 500 members of its Bardstown Whiskey Society in an elegant setting at Louisville’s famed Derby Museum at Churchill Downs back in November.

As with the previous 15 vintages, which are now highly sought after collector’s items, each bottle of the 2001 edition of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon is marked with the exact date that it was placed in oak and bottled, in addition to the exact serial number of the single barrel from which it was drawn.

The 86.6 proof Bourbon is matured in natural open-rick warehouses under the careful supervision of Heaven Hill’s father and son Master Distillers, who monitor the progress of each year’s vintage to ensure it maintains its intended flavor profile and superb quality.  This new edition features the traditional corn, malted barley and rye mashbill, and stringent selection of barrels from the top three floors of the rickhouse, that are the hallmarks of all of Parker and Craig Beam’s Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbons.  The 2001 edition will be available nationally beginning in January 2011 at an average retail price of $25.99 for a 750 ml bottle, which is why it has also been named a “Best Buy” award winner by Malt Advocate and Wine Enthusiast magazines, among others.

Founded in 1934, Bardstown, KY-based Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. (www.heavenhill.com) is the nation’s largest independent, family-owned and operated spirits producer and marketer and the world’s second-largest holder of Kentucky Bourbon. Heaven Hill’s diversified portfolio of brands includes The Christian Brothers Brandies; Evan Williams and Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys; Burnett’s Vodkas and Gin; Hpnotiq Liqueur; PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur; Lunazul and Two Fingers Tequilas, and Dubonnet Aperitif.

Heaven Hill reminds you to “Think Wisely. Drink Wisely.”

A Note From Martin Armstrong At Whisky Broker – Scotch Whisky News

website-logo-with-background

A lot has changed since the 4th October when I first offered 5 barrels each of Aberlour, Tomatin and Linkwood. Since then, I’ve been able to offer more of these, as well as 4yo Balmenach, 4yo Miltonduff and 7 yo Craigellachie. For all you peat fans out there I managed to purchase 5 barrels of 10yo Caol Ila, but due to demand have had to go back twice for more. I’m awaiting delivery of 5 barrels of 1991 North British Grain Whisky and 5 hogsheads of 1991 Grain Whisky from the recently closed Port Dundas. For the serious whisky drinker I’ve also been able to make available 19yo Cragganmore (now sold), 26yo Linkwood, 27yo Balmenach and 28yo Mannochmore. Finally for those wishing to invest in the future, I purchased 5 hogsheads each of New Make Spirit, distilled at Royal Brackla and Glenfarclas Distilleries in early 2010.

I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has purchased a cask so far (approaching 80 casks gone) and I’d really appreciate it if you could spread the word to any of your friends who might be interested.

The Port Dundas Grain whisky may not be of interest to everyone but as the distillery was closed earlier this year, it may become very rare in the future.

Also coming in 2011 are hogsheads of the following, Balmenach January 2008, Tomatin January 08, Glenburgie March 08, Knockdhu April 08, Auchriosk April 08 and Benriach April 08.

If there is anything you would like to see available, please let me know and I’ll keep an eye open for it. Please write a comment on the guestbook of my website, especially if you have purchased a cask. Finally, if you have any website related suggestions, don’t hesitate to send me an email.
