About Deanston

Deanston prides itself on community. It was one of the things that persuaded founder Brodie Hepburn to take the risk and covert a disused cotton mill into a whisky distillery. From the kinship of distillers, to present day innovators, to the growing community of Deanston lovers across the world. There is community and character in every single bottle of Deanston whisky.

Deanston Distillery is housed in a massive, tall, austere stone building on the bank of the River Teith near Doune, Perthshire. Formerly a cotton mill, designed by Sir Richard Arkwright – one of the Fathers of the Industrial Revolution – it was built in 1785 and operated until 1965.

Inspired by David Dale’s mill community at New Lanark, in 1811 the owners built a comfortable model village close by to house the mill workers, complete with a school, post office, communal wash house, grocery shop and savings bank. It was also the first village in Scotland to have electric lighting, in 1813 – 45 years before its neighbour, Doune, and even some months before Westminster Bridge in London. By the 1840s Deanston Village had 4,000 inhabitants, over a quarter of whom worked in the mill. Much of the village is now listed as being of special architectural and historic interest.

For Brodie Hepburn, whisky brokers in Glasgow and owners of Tullibardine and Macduff Distilleries, conversion of the mill into a distillery was a no-brainer. It already had a water turbine in place, driven by water from the river and there was plenty of excellent space for maturing casks. All that required to be done was to remove four solid floors to make way for two pairs of stills. In partnership with the mill owner, James Findlay & Company, the distillery commenced production in 1969, employing many of the local community.

Compass Box Whisky was established by John Glaser in 2000. It’s first commercial release was the blended grain Hedonism, offered the same year. Peat Monster was launched four years later, comprising heavily-peated Islay and medium-peated Highland malts, which went on to become the company’s best-seller. The original version of The Spice Tree blended malt was marketed in 2005, but withdrawn the following year, being replaced by a variant with heavily-toasted cask heads instead of the staves disapproved of by the SWA. The Great King Street range of blended Scotch whiskies was inaugurated with Great King Street Artist’s Blend in 2011, followed by Glasgow Blend in 2014. The Team of Compass Box will be down in Milroy’s of Soho in this particular evening talking us through the line-up below:

Craigellachie & Aberfeldy Scotch Tasting at the Whisky Shop #SFO – Scotch Whisky News

Friday, December 2nd, 3PM – 6 PM

Craigellachie & Aberfeldy Scotch Whiskies

Come by for a taste of new and rare single malts presented by whisky experts and distillery ambassadors. Craigellachie single malt is considered “the rock at the heart of Speyside,” yet is anything but your typical ‘Speyside’ whisky. Considered old fashioned even in 1891, its fruity, muscular flavour stems from the use of traditional worm tub condensers, producing a full, yet aromatic, character that defies expectations.

Perthshire distillery Aberfeldy is perhaps best known for their contributions to blended scotches, producing beautiful balanced single malt whisky since 1898. Often referred to as ‘the golden dram’ in blended malts, their core expressions are rare to find and enjoyed the world over.
