November relaxed Maltstock news!

Some relaxed news

We can hardly believe it’s already been six weeks since Maltstock! We’re still enjoying all the feedback since it was very positive indeed. It was great to see so many relaxed happy people. Your appreciation was also shown by the record number of early bird tickets sold. Amazing!

If you have ideas on how we can further improve, please do send us your feedback.

On our Facebook page you can find some very relaxed photos taken by Rolf, The Whisky-Photographer. And we would love to see yours as well, so please post them!

A big thank you to all our speakers and sponsors for making this edition possible and successful. What a fantastic masterclasses and “Drink with sessions” we enjoyed. And the Saturday evening story telling was (un)believable!

Maltstock 2023

Next year we will be back at our regular venue in Overasselt! Although we were very happy that we found a suitable venue this year, nothing beats the relaxed atmosphere of “het Buitencentrum”. The Ukrainian refugees will be relocated the coming months. Hopefully to more suitable accommodation. So business as usual again next year!

As mentioned we have sold a record number of early Bird tickets. But fear not, we still have tickets available. So you can still come and join the relaxed fun. Simply get your ticket here: https://www.maltstock.com/shop

Festivals

Twp weeks ago we were at the always so relaxed WhiskyBase festival. What amazing show these guys put up. It really is such a relaxed festival. Do check their website for next years tickets, because you should not miss it (we recommend the Sunday, even more relaxed)! Big thank you as well to Jürgen and Steven for their very relaxed assistance.

The next festival where you’ll find us is The Hague, 18-20 November. Always great to see so many old and new relaxed friends there. Stop by at our stand for a relaxed dram. The team will be there, together with some of our volunteers and you can even chat to some of our Maltstock visitors! Very happy to have Silvia and Dominique present to tell you about Maltstock from a visitor perspective. And a few people from our team are also still hosting the whisky trails.

Hope you have a wonderfully relaxed weekend!

Cardrona Distillery Unveils Special Release to Celebrate Seventh Birthday – Middle Earth Whisky News

Cardrona Distillery Unveils Special Release to Celebrate Seventh Birthday

New Zealand’s award-winning Cardrona Distillery is celebrating a milestone seventh year of production tomorrow [Saturday 5th November] by introducing an outstanding new single malt whisky to its luxurious range of small batch spirits – The Otago Pinot Cask.

The celebratory release is an exquisite marriage of four locally sourced, hand selected Felton Road Pinot noir casks. The result is an extraordinary dram from a New World Master. With only 1,217 bottles available, the distillery’s first 700ml bottle is the perfect gift for any discerning whisky lover keen to explore New Zealand’s leading-edge contributions to the art of distilling.

A Cardrona’s spokesperson explains:

“Cardrona Distillery uses a revolutionary method to preserve the casks’ rich Pinot noir seasoning, bringing them to the distillery within hours of the wine leaving the barrel and immediately charging them with new make spirit.

The casks are then matured in the extreme environment of the Cardrona Valley, which itself plays a vital part in the maturation process. Temperatures can vary from -10°C in winter to a soaring 40°C in summer, and at 600m above sea-level with zero humidity – there really is nowhere on earth quite like the Cardrona Valley. The elements have all played a part in this expression, melding the spirit into a simply extraordinary whisky. We can’t wait for the UK’s discerning whisky afficionados to sample a dram.”

The Cardrona Day Special Release: 2022 Otago Pinot Cask is non-chill filtered and naturally flavoured. RRP £175

Tasting notes

Colour: warm rose gold

Nose: black amber plum and nectarine

Taste: raspberries, poached nectarines, toffee, roasted cashews and baking spices.

About Cardrona

Cardrona is a unique brand, distilling hand-crafted luxury spirits in New Zealand’s stunning Southern Alps to share with the world. The Cardrona story is infused with the magic of the Cardrona Valley and the incredible vision and determination of founder, Desiree Reid, who sold her family farm to pursue her dream of building a modern, family-run distillery in her native New Zealand. She chose the Cardrona Valley for its unspoilt tranquillity, crisp clean air and the availability of superb quality local ingredients, perfect for foraging across the seasons. Most importantly, it gave her access to the crystal-clear, mineral-rich Alpine waters of New Zealand’s highest mountain pass for production.

THE KWM 2022 WHISKY CALENDAR – AKA 25 DAY OF DRAM FINE WHISKY – IS BACK!

Our KWM 2022 Whisky Calendar will be ready for pickup and in-store purchase beginning on Saturday. We always over-order products when planning our Calendar, as something always goes wrong. Despite ordering most of the items over a year ago some products never shipped, and others were late. We couldn’t be 100% certain of the final product list in this year’s Calendar until we had 25 whiskies in hand, which finally we will have on the weekend.

1/3 of the whiskies in this year’s Calendar are from producers we haven’t featured in any of the 8 prior editions of the KWM Whisky Calendar. The Calendar also includes 3 KWM single casks, and the oldest SMWS whisky I can remember, from one of my favourite distilleries…

One of the things I am most excited about this year is our bonus trip down memory lane, waxing nostalgiac on 25 of the most memorable single casks we’ve bottled in our 30-year history!

Lots to look forward to in the KWM 2022 Whisky Calendar, and I hope you’ll join us on the journey we like to call 25 Days of Dram Fine Whisky!

INTRODUCING:

THE AMRUT SPECTRUM 004 2022

Amrut’s innovative Spectrum is back! Bottled at 50%, the whisky is initially matured in ex-Bourbon before finishing in custom casks made with new American Oak, new French Oak, ex-Oloroso, and ex-PX Sherry staves.

Amrut Spectrum 004 2022 – 50% – Producer Description: “To make the Spectrum 004, a two-part maturation technique has been employed: the first being maturation of new make spirit in ex-Bourbon casks, followed by transferring the aged spirit into the custom barrels. The custom barrels are made with 4 different kinds of staves: new American Oak with Char level 3, new French Oak with light toasting, ex-Oloroso staves and ex-PX Sherry staves. The aforementioned barrel has equal proportions of all four kinds of staves arranged in a one-after-the-other manner lending their own characteristics and complexities to the malt coming into its own on the nose and the palate.” – $172

You should know the drill by now: the big man has identified a range of whiskies he wants to taste, and the range is unlikely to disappoint. We have a trio of old Edradours, a Millstone distilled in the 1990s, a Gordon & MacPhail Miltonduff from 1989, and OB single casks of BenRiach (1997) and GlenDronach (1990). ·     Date: Tuesday, November 22

·     Time: 7 PM

Buzzard’s Roost isn’t your typical Rye Whiskey bottler. The company was founded by Jason Brauner – the owner of the famous Bourbon Bistro in Louisville Kentucky. Jason has selected over 100 single barrels of Bourbon, Rye, and American Whiskey over the years and decided to take his experience and put it to good use by selecting casks and bottling under his own label.

Buzzard’s Roost puts flavour at the fore by utilizing different casks styles to finish their Rye and Bourbon Whiskey. We are excited to have Buzzard’s Roost Founder and Master Blender Jason Brauner and CEO Judy Hollis Jones join us via Zoom and lead us through their whiskey lineup which includes The Buzzard’s Roost Barrel Strength Rye, Char #1 Rye, Peated Barrel Rye, Toasted Barrel Rye, and two Bourbons from the company that have yet not hit shelves in Alberta!
