A VISIT TO THE CAIRN DISTILLERY, SCOTLAND – Scotch Whisky News

A VISIT TO THE CAIRN DISTILLERY, SCOTLAND

by Paul Mclean

February 20th, 2023 I’ve just toured a superb new distillery, just outside Grantown on Spey. They knew I was coming, and really nice, upon arrival everyone said hello, knew my name and used it, nice touch. I was sat doon with a cup of tea and waited for Andy, he came presently and we had a long half hour chat, I learned a lot. My tour was then starting; this is super new and modern, I loved it. If you can imagine a tour at Knockdhu (an cnoc), then come here – you have just experienced both ends of the scale, Knockdhu is also one of my favourites to tour. Back to the Cairn. A well done video wall to start.

For this old fud with legs giving out, thankfully there are lifts! Up to the first floor, mash, wash backs and stills all in a circular space, and – with plenty of room for additions, so well thought out. I thought every thing so far was good, but then we came downstairs (myself in the lift) and saw the parts you don’t normal see, another video room, more great details, then the lift again to the second floor for the tasting room. What a grand room, what views, and drams from G&M, I had three blends, they got better as the ages went up. A good time here (I took the drams home as I was driving) back down to the gathering, food and drinks!!! The menu is really good, as too the drinks menu, soft drinks, wines and whiskies. Andy came back and we have another chat, there will be some bookings going in from our tours this year, from two guests to a group of 18 later on.

My ending to this blog; I really enjoyed the whole experience, if taking a whisky tour in Speyside (with us or no), this distillery is a MUST. Book online at https://www.thecairndistillery.com

Kensington Wine Market Malt Messenger Bulletin Ardbeg Day 2023 – Scotch Whisky News

Kensington Wine Market’s E-Whisky ARDBEG DAY Newsletter

Peatheads! Rejoice! We’re taking over.

This edition of the Malt Messenger is being held hostage by Curt. Don’t worry, Andrew is safe. It was a peaceful coup, and no egos were hurt in the transition, but for now, RADIO KWM is all ours!

For those that don’t know me well, I should tell you that I celebrate two more holidays each year than most people: Ardbeg Day and Superbowl Sunday. The latter of which, Andrew has referred to as a religious holiday in my household. He’s not wrong. Hopefully, we can talk football later in the year, but folks… it’s Thursday, and we are on the eve of the eve of Ardbeg Day 2023! In ‘parentspeak’: “Two more sleeps, kids!”

If you don’t already have plans to join us devout Ardbeggians this coming Saturday, clear your schedule and read on.

Oh, and fear not, the big guy will be back at the keyboard for the next proper Malt Messenger, but for now… pour a dram of something smoky and settle in for a bit.

Hope this finds you well (and heavily peated)!

Curt

Ardbeg Day 2023

Have you freed up your Saturday afternoon yet? Well…what are you waiting for? I gave you notice several sentences ago.

Join the team from Ardbeg and a few of the KWM crew this Saturday, June 3rd at Hayden Block (just a few blocks east of KWM) for a couple hours of smoky revelry. There will be food, drink, games, prizes, and an opportunity to try this year’s limited edition Ardbeg Day release, Heavy Vapours. And all for the price of a tall coffee at S*****cks. 😉

It seems the day of the 3-litre bottle is behind us, so you won’t Andrew necking this stuff anymore, but we’ll always find ways to be a bit cheeky.

Here are the deets. See you there!

Ardbeg Single Malts

While we might wish for a couple more age-stated expressions in the Ardbeg portfolio, it’s impossible not to concede that this is undoubtedly one of the great core ranges in the modern whisky world. (Though I may be a wee bit biased, as most of you know. There’s probably more Ardbeg than blood flowing through my veins at this point. Humble brag or cry for help? You decide.)

The distillery recently doubled production, yet I can’t imagine they’re anywhere near keeping up with the level of demand there is for anything bearing that iconic stylized ‘A’.

At the risk of stirring up a hornet’s nest, can I just mention how bloody amazing an Ardbeg Ten Caesar is? Trust me.

1. Ardbeg Ten – 46% – One of Scotland’s most beloved whiskies, this 10-year-old highlights the distillery’s peaty provenance. Although technically the most heavily-peated full-time production whisky in Scotland, the distillery’s cinch-necked stills and spirit-purifier give this malt a softer edge than might be expected. Classic and iconic at this point. There are those that love it and those that are wrong. Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: A burst of intense smoky fruit escapes into the atmosphere. peat infused with zesty lemon and lime, wrapped in waxy dark chocolate. Bold menthol and black pepper slice through the sweet smoke followed by tarry ropes and graphite. Savour the aroma of smoked fish and crispy bacon alongside green bell peppers, baked pineapple and pear juice. Add water and an oceanic minerality brings a breath of cool, briny seaspray. Waxed lemon and lime follows with coal tar soap, beeswax and herby pine woodlands. Toasted vanilla and sizzling cinnamon simmer with warm hazelnut and almond toffee. Palate: An explosion of crackling peat sets off millions of flavour explosions: peat effervesces with tangy lemon and lime juice, black pepper pops with sizzling cinnamon-spiced toffee. Then comes a wave of brine infused with smooth buttermilk, ripe bananas and currants. Smoke gradually wells up on the palate bringing a mouthful of warm creamy cappuccino and toasted marshmallows. As the taste lengthens and deepens, dry espresso, liquorice root and tarry smoke develop coating the palate with chewy peat oils. Finish: The finish goes on and on – long and smoky with tarry espresso, aniseed, toasted almonds and traces of soft barley and fresh pear.” – $93.99 + GST

2. Ardbeg Wee Beastie – 47.4% – The latest addition to the core range, Wee Beastie is a 5-year-old Ardbeg that was created to be the rawest and most peaty Ardbeg ever bottled. We particularly love the ballsy nature of throwing a great big ‘5’ on the label. Not a lot of brands would have so much confidence in the swagger of their young spirit. Matured in a mix of ex-Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks. Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: The first sniff alerts you to a nearby presence… heightened senses are filled with very bright, fresh herbal notes, with creeping hints of vanilla and pear. Rich Turkish coffee mingles with sappy pine resin, with honey-glazed ham lurking in the background. With water, more herbal top notes like vetiver and fennel captivate and pull you in, while beguiling scents of aniseed, green apple and leather cause you to drop your guard. Out of nowhere, a sharp tang of smoke and a crack of fresh black pepper fire warning shots across the senses. Palate: Suddenly, a rich, explosive mouthfeel bursts forth with chocolate, creosote and tar. A powerful blast of eucalyptus thrashes about with antiseptic lozenges and aniseed. The raw, smoky intensity gathers pace, before smoked bacon and savoury meats sink into the palate. Finish: The long, salty mouthcoating finish retreats, with hints of cocoa and fudge slinking slowly away.” – $80.99 + GST

3. Ardbeg Corryvreckan – 57.1% – Corryvreckan was launched as a replacement for Airigh Nam Beist but has become a legend in its own right. It’s sweet, smoky, spicy, and unmistakably Ardbeg. Toasted French oak is the not-so-secret to this one. No shy Ardbeg, Corry is kinda like a peated meteor shower on the tongue. Expect a big un! But why wouldn’t you? This is Ardbeg, after all. Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Heady, intense and powerful. Swirl the glass and dip your nose into the torrents of tarry ropes, creosote and linseed oil rising from deep within the vortex. A collision of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants and muscovado sugar pulls you under its spell with a burst of plump cherries and earthy pine needles leaping from its depths. From salty seasoning comes a briny character with tangy crisp seaweed and smoky bacon swirling on the surface with hints of sweet vanilla, spicy cloves and blueberries. Surrender to its dangerous depths with the heady force of menthol, treacle and chilli sauce. Palate: Plunge into the whirlpool and torrents of taste well up on the palate; deep, peppery and chewy, bombarding the tongue. The first plunge brings forth chewy peppered steak soaked in pepper sauce with the tang of crispy seaweed. As you descend deeper, encounter a mouthful of black tarry espresso coffee that coats the palate with rich melted dark fruits (blackcurrants, blueberries and cherries) and bitter almonds. As the taste soaks in deeper, star anise and hickory dry out the palate before a surprise of chalky effervescent violets fizz to the surface. Finish: Long, deep and remaining powerful into the finish with black tarry coffee, chocolate coated cherries and hot pepper sauce, the lingering memories of your mysterious and daring journey into Corryvreckan.” – $147.99 + GST

4. Ardbeg Uigeadail – 54.2% – Uigeadail (pronounced ‘Oog-a-dal’) was launched in 2003 to pretty much universal acclaim. Its heady mixture of ex-Bourbon and ex-sherry casks was like nothing else available at the time and two decades later, the legend continues to grow. The most recent batch is particularly awesome. And for the Ardgeeks who may be curious, the whisky takes its name from the mysterious Loch that also happens to be Ardbeg Distillery’s water source. A game-changer for those that are lucky enough to try it for the first time. Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Rich and weighty with heady and smoky aromatics. At full strength, the initial aroma is a beguiling mix of warm Christmas cake, walnut oil and parma violets fused with fresh ocean spice, cedar and pine needles falling from the Christmas tree. A smouldering coal fire and the scent of well-oiled leather brings warmth. The sweetness of treacle toffees and chocolate-coated raisins emerge through the smoke. With water, the deep smokiness increases in intensity, reminiscent of a fired Christmas pudding. Rich flowering currants and warm baked banana and walnut bread are served with simmering mocha espresso. Palate: Full flavoured and rich with a deep mouth-coating texture, the taste is an intriguing balance between sweet, spicy and deep smoky flavours. The flavour is initially sweet. A burst of winter spices sets off a smoky-spicy explosion countered by a sumptuous mid-palate of honey glazed smoked food and chewy treacle. Waves of deep smoky tones and rich aromas build up on the palate like a fine Montecristo cigar. Finish: Amazingly long and chewy with lingering raisiny, deep mocha tones and rich aromatic smoke into the perfectly integrated finish.” – $132.99 + GST

  • Date: Tuesday, June 6
  • Time:7 PM
  • Cost: $55
  • VIRTUAL TASTING

We recently received a quintet of curious new whiskies from the Rest & Be Thankful Co. Four are from Bruichladdich Distillery, 2 each of Port Charlotte and Bruichladdich. The provenance of these Bruichladdich casks is curious, as they are believed to be from Mark Reynier’s personal stash… The 5th whisky is a bottling of Finglassie, only the second time we have had a bottling from the new Inchdarnie Distillery. Those 5 malts make for the start of a tempting lineup, so we’ve added a couple of other Laddies to the range to round things out. Join us for a Rest & Bruichladdich kinda evening!

It will feature at least 100 single malts from Scotland & around the world, and as always it includes a KWM logo tasting glass. This event sells out quickly, so don’t hesitate… when it is sold out, it is sold out!

The tasting will consist of 2007, 2009, and a pair of 2008s, as well as our 2008 KWM Cask, and the newly arrived 15-Year Cask Strength. Andrew is visiting the distillery in the weeks before the tasting, and will no doubt have some photos to share.

You had us at 31-year-old GlenDronach… We recently received some cool new releases from Iain Croucher at North Star Spirits, and we can’t resist the temptation to try them. On the young side of things, there is the new Tarot Blend, a Campbeltown Blended Malt, and only the second-ever bottling from Dalmunach. We love a good Blair Athol, and how often do you see an indie bottle of Dalwhinnie? But the icing on the cake of this tasting will be the GlenDronach 31 Year. You almost never see indie GlenDronach, and this one has some great reviews!

Gordon & MacPhail to Transform Elgin Town Centre Shop into Whisky Tourist Attraction – Scotch Whisky News

Gordon & MacPhail to transform Elgin town centre shop into whisky tourist attraction

by Paul Mclean

Dec 31st, 2022 Whisky specialists Gordon and MacPhail will undertake a multimillion-pound makeover of their South Street shop. The transformation will create a unique whisky experience. It will incorporate displays, tasting rooms and a liquid library of some of the world’s rarest whiskies. The transfer of their shop will be a temporary one to the High Street, next to the entrance to the St Giles Centre during construction. Director of Prestige Stephen Rankin believes the firm’s ability to adapt over the years has been key to its’ success.  He explained: “We have been here since 1895 and South Street is, and will remain, the spiritual home of Gordon & MacPhail. It’s a destination for many whisky aficionados from around the world. Our ability to adapt in changing times over more than a century, has been a major factor in our success as a company. This substantial investment is another exciting step on our journey from a local grocer’s shop to internationally-renowned whisky experts and distillers”.

Grocers played a vital role in the development of the industry, using their skills for blending tea to produce blended whisky. Gordon & MacPhail took an alternative path and focused on single malts, developing their expertise in maturation.” What are the plans for the Elgin whisky experience? The work will take place throughout 2023 and involves improvements and repairs to the exterior of the building. Internally, there will be a complete refit of the ground and first floors. This, it is hoped, will transform the space into a must-visit destination for lovers of whisky. It has seen many changes over the years and originally housed the offices and boardroom for Gordon & MacPhail before they moved to larger premises, with warehousing, at Boroughbriggs Road.

Mr Rankin added: “We see this as a major vote of confidence in Elgin. We believe the new whisky tourist attraction will bring people into the area. Creating experiences is a key element of any strategy to revitalise town centres. We also hope the relocation of our retail shop, which will open in the next few months, will give a boost to the High Street.”

The shop on South Street will close its’ doors on Hogmanay. This will give staff time to move the stock before work starts. I heard this news just before Christmas when I was in a meeting at the shop, looking forward to our bookings for 2023- Paul McLean.

PS Look out for our blog on the new Cairn Distillery, coming soon (Now Open ~ W.I.).

Ardbeg Day 2023 – Heavy Vapours Limited Release – Scotch Whisky News

HEAVY VAPOURS

ARDBEG DAY 2023

70cl | 46% ABV

This limited edition Islay single malt was launched to celebrate Ardbeg Day 2023. This experimental whisky was distilled without using Ardbeg’s copper purifier, ensuring that bolder, heavier compounds passed through the distillation process. This distorts the usual balance between fruit, sweetness and smoke, whilst accentuating the smoky and oily character of Ardbeg.

 NOSE

Smoke rises with a cloying sweetness. Intense, pungent and aromatic, a distinctive farmyard scent drifts, along with a crunchy aroma, like creosote or tarry rope. A splash of water disturbs the vapours and dark chocolate cream billows, laced with a ribbon of smoked artichoke.

PALATE

A burst of bitter-sweetness surges, disturbing ashy coal dust and casting a haze of cardamom, peppermint and coffee grits. Clouds of dark chocolate and mentholic eucalyptus roll in, obscuring the fruit and floral notes usually found at the heart of Ardbeg. Wisps of aniseed twists, cinnamon balls and antiseptic lozenges float on the palate.

FINISH

The aftertaste lingers long and bold, with an almost anaesthetising sensation.

Recap: All Good Things Must Come to an End – Spirit of Toronto News

All Good Things Must Come to an End…

It’s difficult to wrap up an event like Spirit of Toronto without feeling a bit of a letdown. After months of planning we don our glass slippers for a night of euphoric chatter and a sea of endless smiles, and crossing the finish line is always anticlimactic.

The guests leave, you pack up, and then the Inbox goes quiet with the exception of the bills that need to be paid and other mundane administrative tasks. No one likes to clean up after a party so suffice to say that these last few chores feel like drudgery.

For this reason we’re elated when our Photo Gallery is finally published, affording us the chance to relive the show digitally. As the kids say, pics or didn’t happen:

Spirit of Toronto 2023 Photo Gallery

While my heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone who attended, it was an extra pleasure to meet so many of you in person (with a shout-out to those who traveled to Toronto after participating in our Virtual Series over the past three years – more on this after the signature.)

I always enjoy the show vicariously through your highlights — according to you some of this year’s fan favourites include the Dunville’s Irish Whiskey masterclass, all things Kavalan, Yellowstone Bourbon, the Gonzalez Byass showcase in our Sketches of Spain lounge, Johnnie Walker Blue Label (you ballers!), our expanded Oyster Speakeasy & Raw Bar and those Whiskey Burgers washed down with Cavehill Bourbon Juleps. 😍

There are a few more recaps after the signature, otherwise I look forward to keeping in touch over the coming year as we plan for our 20th anniversary bash on Saturday May 4 — and yes, The Force will be strong with this one!

In the best of spirits,

Johanna Ngoh

See you next year on Saturday May 4, 2024!

SAANICH, BC (May 18, 2023) – Whiskey enthusiasts, it’s time to pack your bags and head to the Pacific Northwest for a one-of-a-kind experience. The Northwest Whiskey Trail, the first of its kind to cross an international border, launches today and is ready to welcome enthusiasts and newcomers to the world of single malt and potstill whiskey.

The brainchild of Graeme Macaloney Ph.D., CEO and Whiskymaker at Macaloney’s Island Distillery, the Northwest Whiskey Trail is an international adventure taking visitors through British Columbia, Washington State, and Oregon. This self-guided trail features seven distilleries, each with its own character and history, offering visitors an unforgettable whiskey experience.

“We are thrilled to finally unveil the Northwest Whiskey Trail, a unique and exciting experience for whiskey lovers,” said Graeme Macaloney. “Our goal is to showcase the incredible distilleries and whiskies found in the Pacific Northwest, and to provide a fun, educational and memorable experience for visitors. Collectively, we export our whiskies to every continent and can’t wait for whiskey enthusiasts from around the world to come and explore this beautiful region and all it has to offer.”

The trail showcases the best award-winning (including World’s Best & Country Best) whiskies in the Northwest, including those made by Westward Whiskey in Portland, OR, Copperworks Distilling and Westland Distillery in Seattle, WA, Macaloney’s Island Distillery in Victoria, B.C., Goldstream Distillery in Cowichan Valley B.C., Shelter Point Distillery in Campbell River, B.C., and Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers in Vancouver, B.C. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore each distillery’s unique distilling process, sample their signature whiskey, and learn about the history and culture behind each brand.

“When Graeme first approached us with the idea of creating an international whiskey trail featuring like-minded craft distilleries in the Pacific Northwest, we thought it was a brilliant idea,” said Copperworks Distilling Co. president, co-founder, and co-owner Jason Parker. “We’re excited for more people to visit, learn about the distilleries, and most importantly, taste the difference between each distillery.”

One of the highlights of the trail is the Northwest Whiskey Trail passport. Visitors can collect stamps at each of the participating distilleries along the trail, and once they fill up their whiskey passport, they can redeem it at their final distillery for an exclusive, limited-edition Northwest Whiskey Trail Glencairn whiskey glass, pictured above.

The trail takes visitors through stunning landscapes and scenic routes, from the pristine coastlines of British Columbia to the rolling hills of Washington State and the urban landscapes of Portland. The Northwest Whiskey Trail is the perfect opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the Pacific Northwest’s rich whiskey culture while enjoying the region’s stunning natural beauty.

Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of single malt and potstill whiskey, the Northwest Whiskey Trail is the ultimate experience. So, grab your passports, pack your bags, and head to the Pacific Northwest for a whiskey adventure you’ll never forget.

Malt Messenger No. 152 – New KWM Cask, New Daftmill, New Tastings, a Ballot & More! – Whisky News!

Kensington Wine Market

Established 1992

This newsletter is about 3 weeks in the making, and it’s big. Despite the fact we had some cool new products and tastings to fill you in on, I wanted to wait to send it until after the sale. Too much temptation can be a bad thing, better to spread things out…

But over those three weeks, more and more new whiskies kept arriving, and it seemed to make sense to include as many of them as possible. Nevertheless, a line had to be drawn, and this is where I drew it.

There are a lot of exciting new whiskies in this newsletter, and sadly, I have a feeling some of them will be glossed over when you see that there are a few items available by ballot. FOMO will kick in and everything else here will be skipped over.

That is a shame, we have a stunning new Canadian whisky, the Daftmill 15 Year Cask Strength has landed and there are a trio of new limited edition Compass box bottlings. We also have some exciting new tastings added for June and July, and beyond.

But I get it… I do… Springbank is Springbank and everyone wants it. There may be a lot of releases, but there are not a lot of bottles, so set your expectations accordingly. Most of you will be disappointed again, there is no avoiding that, but there are a lot of other really interesting whiskies in here with which to assuage your disappointment!

As always, in the event of a discrepancy in price, the point of sale at KWM will be taken as correct. Online ordering and in-store purchasing are always our preferences. You can email your requests in… but they won’t be dealt with as quickly as the web orders!

Sincerely,

Andrew Ferguson

New Bridgeland KWM Single Malt!

Our friends at Calgary’s Bridgeland Distillery have offered us up the kind of exclusive bottling we couldn’t possibly say no to… Made from a mash of 80% Red Spring Wheat and 20% Barley from Penhold, Alberta. The spirit was distilled in pot stills before aging in both Virgin American oak and French Limousin Toasted oak, seasoned with Bridgeland’s own ex-Moscato Brandy cask.

There is a lot of young craft whisky out there, some of it better than others. Most of these new whiskies are less than 4-5 years of age, and not overly exciting. They often show promise but need more time… So you can imagine my surprise when my entire whisky team and I got excited about a 42-month-old wheat whisky!

Bridgeland has some impressive spirits maturing in their urban (subterranean) warehouse. Evan and I paid the distillery a visit earlier in the year and sampled through a wide range of bottlings and casks. We with impressed with damn near everything, and so the conversation started about a KWM exclusive bottling.

Bridgeland Wheat Whisky KWM Cask – 500ml – 57% – Virgin American Oak / Finished in ex-Moscato Brandy Seasoned Limousin Oak – My Tasting Note: “Nose: big, rich, spicy, and decadent with soft fruits; ginger molasses cookies, pecan pie, and candied fennel; doughy, with fruit flan; a touch of green grapes and raisins; late dusty grain. Palate: sweet, fruity, and rich, with loads of spice; figs in honey, cooked raisins, and more fruit flan; decadent and nutty, more pecan pie and ginger molasses cookies; boozy cherries, orange rind, and basically the finish from a good Old Fashioned cocktail; the wheat pokes through with a touch of dusty minerality and adds a soft floral touch; more white grapes. Finish: warming, spicy, and nutty, with loads of fruit: Jujubes, fruit flan, and darker fruits; good length, with a soft mouthfeel. Comment: while not our first-ever wheat whisky, this is unlike anything we have ever bottled before; it has the spicy-fruit profile of a barrel-proof American rye; but also the decadent balance of a French oak matured single malt; very drinkable.” – $68

The Datfmill 15 Year Cask Strength is Here!

A bit more than 1 year has passed since I first asked if KWM would be lucky enough to get an allocation of Daftmill 15-Year Cask Strength… 1 year 16 days to be exact. And once more we are the only retailer in Canada to receive it…

Opportunities like this don’t come about by chance, they come about through relationships and partnerships which need to be forged, maintained, and reciprocal. Our relationship with Berry Bros. & Rudd, and Charton Hobbs are the lynchpins here. They helped set up my first visit to Daftmill more than a decade ago, and we have worked closely together over the following years on more than a dozen KWM casks and many other exclusive whiskies.

I am returning to see the distillery again in June and will be taking lots of photos to share for a Daftmill Vertical Tasting we will be hosting in June. More on that below.

In the meantime, I have finally gotten around to writing my own tasting note on the Daftmill 15-Year-Old Cask Strength… available now from your friends at KWM!

Daftmill 15-Year-Old Cask Strength – 55.7% – First Fill Ex-Bourbon – My Tasting Note: “Nose: soft, fruity, and nutty, with a lovely cheesy funk; window putty, parchment paper, and fresh cut spring flowers; macadamias, Starburst fruit candies, and sliced pear with a touch of crumbly blue cheese; quince paste and creamed honey; firm toasted oak and wood spices. Palate: lush, fruity, and spicy, with a backbone of toasted oak and dry nutty tones; floral and honeyed, the oak is firm but balanced; on the fruit side of things, more Starburts, crisp pear, and honeydew melon; chewy malt, silky oils, and a flinty minerality; a touch more cheese, Comte and a touch of Danish blue cheese. Finish: light, fresh, and waxy with good length; more floral and fruity tones with honey, malt, and cheese. Comment: This is another cracking good Daftmill; it is elegant, with nice layers, and a good balance; I haven’t even mentioned the strength yet, dangerously drinkable at 55.7%!” – $280

New Compass Box Whiskies

We are launching 3 new Compass Box expressions this week, and that bounty is not only cause for celebration, but also an excuse to put on a baller Compass Box Whisky Tasting…

We will be joined virtually by Compass Box’s Scott Ellis on Tuesday July 18, for a virtual tasting featuring 3 different Flaming Heart, both releases of The Circle, the new Ultramarine, and Vellichor. More details are below in the tastings section.

The three new releases are all limited to 1 per customer. We will be holding back a handful of each for participants in the tasting.

1. Compass Box Flaming Heart 2022 – 48.9% – The 2022 (7th) Edition of Compass Box Flaming Heart has been built around powerful malts from Laphroaig, Caol Ia, and Talisker, tamed a bit with others from Glen Elgin, Balmenach, and Highland Park, and that’s not all. This Blended Malt consists of a wide range of components including remnants from the 2018 Flaming Heart and Peat Monster Arcana. 48.9%. – Producer Tasting Note: “A high-energy nose with smouldering peat embers, cigar wrapper and candied ginger. The palate is oily, smoky, rich and savoury.” – $205 – Limit 1 Per Customer!

2. Compass Box The Circle No.2 – 46% – The second edition of Compass Box’s The Circle was created with bartender Mannie Monaghan and was inspired by the colour coral. Bottled at 46%, this Blended Scotch whisky is primarily composed of Glen Elgin, and Speyburn, along with Teaninich, Linkwood, Ardmore, and a parcel of Blended Scotch whisky. The whiskies components were matured in a mix of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks. – Producer Tasting Note: “(FOR NON-SYNAESTHETES) We love the bright pineapple and stewed peach aromas that leap out of the glass. The flavour is of vanilla, honey and sultanas soaked in Cognac.” – $230 – Limit 1 Per Customer!

3. Compass Box Ultramarine – 51% – The first of four whiskies to be released in the Extinct Blends quartet, Ultramarine is inspired by old bottlings of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Composed of Caol Ila, Glendullan, Cameronbridge, Grivan, and much more. The whisky is bottled at 51% and is an homage to the deluxe Blends of the 1980s which were strongly influenced by notes of antique-y sherry and pipe tobacco. – Producer Tasting Note: “Toffee, antique polished oak and complex peatiness are primary aromas, with a palate of roasted pecan, raisins and smoke.” – $440 – Limit 1 Per Customer!

Introducing:

Smokehead Terminado Islay Single Malt

We’re all fans of the Smokehead range, and we really like this new one too!

Producer Description

“Terminado brings together Smokehead Islay single malt with tequila. It’s the meeting of two restless spirits – and the awakening of a mesmerising whisky. There, in this tequila cask finish, fiery peat awakes with wild agave. Smoke mixes with chewy meringue. And citrus spins with sweetness. You ain’t tasted nothing like this before.”

Smokehead Terminado Islay Single Malt – 43% – Tequila Cask Finish – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Peaty smoke struts with vanilla and shortbread. Almonds mix with chewy meringue. Blood orange stirs with burnt sugar. And barbecued pineapple brings a surprise move. Palate: A riot of smoke and citrus. Peat and malt go toe-to-toe with toffee, lime spins with peach, and citrus balances perfectly with burnt corn-on-the-cob. Finish: The finish is long and sweet with gentle heat. With a dash of citrus and sprinkle of pepper. But it’s still not the end. There’s always time for another dance.” – $105

New North Star Whiskies Arriving Next Week

I don’t know if Iain Croucher puffs on a little wacky tobacy before writing his tasting notes… but they have a unique style.

Six cool new releases including only the second Dalmunach we have ever seen, a fund cask strength blend and an IB Dalwhinnie… you don’t see those very often!

Don’t be surprised if we cobble together a North Star virtual rating… I am curious to try all of these, including the 31 year old GlenDronach!

1. North Star Tarot Blend 6 Year – This cool young blend is a 2016 vintage composed of 20% malt from the “Edrington portfolio”, and 80% North British grain, all of which was matured in Refill ex-Oloroso Sherry Butts before bottling at 57.3%. – $55

2. North Star Blair Athol 16 Year – 49.5% – 2006 – Oloroso Sherry Finish – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: blanched almonds on biscotti with marzipan jam. Palate: a cloak of warm dark chocolate & hazelnuts. Finish: Turkish black coffee with cardamom.” – $145

3. North Star Campbeltown 8 Year – 55.1% – Port & Oloroso Sherry Octaves – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: smashed peaches on your fruit crumble with creme anglaise. Palate: spiced cherry tobacco with unicorn tears. Finish: silky brambles straight from the bush.” – $155 – 87.8pts Whiskybase

4. North Star Dalmunach 6 Year – 56.4% – 2016 – Ruby Port Cask Finish – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: white linen tablecloth at the end of a boozy dinner. Palate: rich beyond belief. A 15 tog duvet of fortified wine that will keep you warm. Finish: finish with cheese.” – $135

5. North Star Dalwhinnie 14 Year – 48.9% – Refill Oloroso Sherry Finish – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: aromas of toasted green peppercorns and salted pistachios. Palate: carmalised apricots, porridge, clove custard, milk chocolate and popcorn. Finish: finish with cheese…” – $152

6. North Star GlenDronach 31 Year – 44.4% – 1991 – Refill Oloroso Sherry Butt – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: cold rain on hot tarmac, milled black peppers. Palate: passion fruit curd on hot buttered toast. Finish: morello cherry & a warm chocolate fondant.” – $2800 – 89.67pts Whiskybase

Amrut Cask Strengths Are Back!

The cask strength versions of two popular Amrut malts are back… and if Curt is excited about it… you’ll know a lots of other folks will be too!

1. Intermediate Sherry Cask Strength – 57.1% – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Instead of the usual biscuit aroma, we now get moist cake. And my word: is it fruity and spicy!! Love the freshly waxed oak floor, too. Brain-explodingly complex and multi-layered with one of the most intriguing sherry-style-bourbon-style marriages on the market. Taste: Cracking delivery and entirely unique in form. The structure is decidedly oak-based, but acts as no more than a skeleton from which the juicy sultana and spices drape. Salivating, too, as the barley kicks in powerfully. But the liquorice-orangey-honeycomb bourbon theme quietly shapes the flavour profile; the spices pulse and glow. Finish: Quite a chunk of natural caramel quietens the more exuberant characteristics; long and elegant.” – $140

2. Portonova Cask Strength – 62.1% – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: A Thick pudding of a nose; fruit and caramel have merged into one slightly over-oaked soup; burnt apple pie. Taste: This is essentially a port pipe sandwich…. and it shows. The spicy, jammy fruit is interwoven through any amount of caramel while the oaky saltiness gets the taste buds both salivating and puckering until you run dry. Finish: Long, massive oak with quite evident traces of the virgin barrels now detectable. And more of a cocoa hue as it progresses. At last some muscovado sugars arrive to supplant the berry fruits.” – $140

The Berry’s Perspective 21 Year Blend Is Back!

It is back, and it is $15 cheaper than the last time we had it…  Exclusive is KWM in Canada, with only 30 bottles available. Bottled at 43%, the label features a photo of Sandwood Bay in Sutherland, by Scottish photographer Lindsay Robertson. Hard to find a 21-year-old Scotch this good, at this price!

Producer Tasting Note: “Fresh, vibrant fruit is undercut by delicate oak and spice, gracefully interwoven with vanilla and honey. A lingering finish caps the experience.”

About the Series: “The Perspective Series brings together two art forms – whisky-making and photography. The essence of our master blender’s work is captured by photographer Lindsay Robertson’s evocative images.”

Berrys The Perspective 21 Year Blend – 43% – My Tasting Note – Updated May 17, 2023: “Nose: sweet, creamy, fruity, and elegant; Jujubes, caramel apples, dulce de leche, and licorice; a fine balance of chocolate, dried fruits, spices, leather, and tobacco; the grain adds a silky elegance to the richer malts; is that a faint whiff of peat? Palate: soft, fruity, and malty with coating oils, toasted oak, and silky filaments of old grain whisky; floral and herbaceous with loads of honey, more dulce de leche, and gamey goats milk chocolate; savoury and decadent spices: more chewy citrus candies, soft white orchard fruits, and caramel apple; French roast coffee beans, leather, and tobacco, with soft licorice; a touch of dunnage, and another hint of subtle peat; elegant, and smooth with lots of layers. Finish: light, fresh, fruity, and elegant with a decent length; more Jujubes, chocolate, leather, tobacco and spices; delicately coating and oily. Comment: This is lovely stuff, both sessionable, and worthy of a bit closer inspection too; very well blended, it is very easy drinking; but it also has lots of layers; old school blend, and a nice dram.” – $125

Bourbon Corner with Evan

Evan here. We have a TINY amount of two very high-end Bourbon releases coming in soon, so I wanted to highlight these for preorder and mention some other with other notable bottles available. Looking for some good Bourbon, Rye, or other American Whiskey? Check these out:

Doc Swinson’s 16-Year-Old Bourbon – The Forgotten One – ONLY 3 BOTTLES coming to KWM!

Doc Swinson’s has stood out for us at KWM amongst a slew of other NDPs (Non-Distillery Producers) thanks to their consistently strong releases and deft cask finishing. This 16 Year Old Bourbon spent 12 years aging in the typical heavily charred virgin oak barrels. The whisky was then transferred to casks which once held Madeira for another four years. The folks at Doc Swinson’s weren’t planning for this project to become a 16-year-old, but then the Covid hit the fan and production of hand sanitizer pushed all other concerns to the side. That is the reason for this release being called the Forgotten One. Bottled at 49.35%. Only 275 bottles, with 3 coming to KWM!

Lucky Seven The Proprietor – 14-Year-Old Single Barrel – 59.8%

Lucky Seven Spirits has been making a splash over the past few years in the USA, and we are getting a few of their releases in Alberta now as well. The Proprietor a series of older, carefully selected single casks Bourbon have been aged between 12 and 15 Years old. This 14-Year-Old Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon is the first and only release to come our way so far. This single barrel release was bottled at 59.80%.

Barrel Craft Gray Label 16 Seagrass Rye

We took a flyer on this one and brought it in without having tasted it beforehand. Fortunately, an opportunity arose a few weeks later, where we were able to put our mouths where Andrew’s money is. Errr…that didn’t come out quite right. Anyway…this is unbelievably good rye, currently wearing a ‘Curt’s Pick’ tag on it. Trust us, this is tropical and beautiful. Grab one before it’s gone. Notice the note below. 16-Year-Old 100% Canadian Rye, at 65.41% ABV. I wonder which Canadian 100% Rye producing distillery this juice could have originated from…

Producer Note: “The foundation of BCS Gray Label Seagrass began with two groups of 16-year-old 100% Canadian Rye barrels – one with bright citrus and crisp green apple notes and the other with earthy spearmint notes. A portion of the first group was finished in Apricot Brandy casks, a portion of the second group was finished in Martinique rhum barrels, and a blend of the first and second groups was finished in Malmsey Madeira barrels. When each set of secondary maturation flavors peaked, those casks were pulled and slowly married into the final blend.”

Other Notable Bottles

SMWS 140.12 – LITTLE DRAM ON THE PRAIRIE

This is the first SMWS release we have seen in Canada from the renowned Balcones Distillery of Waco, Texas. It is also the first bottle of Single Malt Whisky to be sold in Canada from the Distillery that I am aware of. Balcones has a short but relatively tumultuous history, thanks to a dispute between a prior Founder/Distiller and some investors. The drama played out nearly a decade ago and received a good amount of attention from whisky lovers and mainstream media alike. Luckily the whiskey is damn good regardless! This single cask is bold and flavorful yet impressively balanced for a four-year-old. It might just be the best American Single Malt I have tasted to date.

RW 5.3 – EXPLORING NEW FRONTIERS

Another first for the SMWS Canada – the first Rye Whisky we have seen. This bottle comes from the highly respected MGP Distillery of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. It is full of bright citrus notes and is a testament to what good Rye Whisky can be. Only a few bottles remain!

Casey Jones Wheated Bourbon

The whisky staff at KWM recently had a chance to try this bottle when Cody from the distillery was travelling through Alberta. Like the rest of the Casey Jones lineup, this is very well put together and drinks superbly even in relative youth. The Wheated Bourbon is made from a four-grain mash bill that includes 26.5% Bloody Butcher Corn, 26.5% Yellow Dent Corn, 35% Wheat, and 12% Malted Barley. It is aged for at least three years and bottled at 55%.

Kentucky Spirits Ltd. KWM Barrel Bourbon

Distilled in Paris, Kentucky by Kentucky Spirits Limited. Barrel #31 was picked by the KWM Whisky staff. Made from a mash bill of 75% Corn, 21% Rye, and 4% Malted Barley (yeah, the photo does say 10% for the Malted Barley. Shawn pointed out that it would make the mash bill to give 106%. That’s impossible. No mash bill can give more than 100%. By definition that is the most any mash bill can give….), it was filled into a standard charred virgin American White Oak 53-gallon barrel on November 25th, 2018. It was aged for 3 years and 6 months before being bottled exclusively for our shop at a cask strength of 60.4%. 228 bottles total.

Ardbeg Day at Hayden Block

For the first time ever at Ardbeg its whisky has been distilled without a purifier – the apparatus on the still responsible for maintaining Ardbeg’s unrivalled balance between extreme peat and floral fruitiness.

Following the distillery’s Planet Ardbeg comic launch last year, a dramatic new storyline in the series will be revealed alongside the new expression that’s inspired by its unusual creation. And so this year, whisky lovers are invited to celebrate the theme of ‘Planet’ Ardbeg Day – where they can expect to be transported into Ardbeg’s mythical, graphic novel universe.

Rest & Bruichladdich

  • Time:5 PM
  • Cost: $25

Bob Baxter, one of the founders of Yukon Brewing & Distilling, will be joining us for a Two Brewers Yukon Single Malt vertical tasting. We’ll sample 7 releases of Two Brewers whisky, including the latest batches: 35, 36, 37, 38, and 39!

Spring Single Malt Festival Spectacular

  • Date: Thursday, June 15
  • Time:7 PM
  • Cost: $75
  • FESTIVAL

It is hard to believe, but the last Spring Single Malt Festival was way back in June of 2019… So this is our 9th annual (ish) spring festival of all things malt whisky, though it would have been the 12th, if… you know… so we’ve added the word Spectacular for no specific reason because… why not! It will feature at least 100 single malts from Scotland & around the world, and as always it includes a KWM logo tasting glass. This event sells out quickly, so don’t hesitate… when it is sold out, it is sold out!
