Laphroaig’s Classic 10-Year-Old for Under $35 – Islay Single Malt Whisky News

Limited-Time, Yesteryear Pricing on an Islay Staple
Laphroaig 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $50) ($34.99)

“This one isn’t likely to last long, but we will always fight the good fight against inflation in booze pricing and keep doing all we can to get the sharpest pricing to our customers.”
— Andrew Whiteley, K&L Spirits Buyer

Today’s offer is can’t-miss opportunity to fall in love with an old favorite all over again. No matter how many bottles a Laphroaig fanatic has gone through over the years, they can’t help but go head over heels at this unheard-of price. In one of the great negotiating coups of the year, our spirits team has worked out a sub-$35 price on Laphroaig’s ultra-classic 10 Year Old that we haven’t seen in over a decade. There isn’t much else to say but make room behind the bar, under the table, in the pantry…wherever you can in order to stash away as much as you can, because we’ll certainly never see this price again.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $50) $34.99

92 points Whisky Advocate: “This expression offers an uncompromising note of brine-laden peat and iodine, with charcoal and sweeter fruit notes also present. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smoldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. The finish is as big as everything else, with barbecue, iodine, and asphalt. Still a classic! (GS, Fall 2018)”

92 points Wine Enthusiast: “Look for a distinctly peaty aroma, with hints of smoked fish, bacon and mesquite. The palate shows peat smoke from the first sip plus an undercurrent of honey, finishing with black pepper heat. Water brings out a spearmint note and a touch more vanilla. (KN)” (12/2017).

K&L Notes: The last time we sold Laphroaig 10 for this incredible price was February 6th, 2012! When this deal is gone—it is gone. This 10-year-old malt epitomizes the taste of Islay; rich, smoky, and peaty. Known as “the most richly flavored of all Scotch whiskies,” Laphroaig is widely considered one of the finest distilleries in the world. That they’ve held that distinction for two hundred years is nothing short of awe inspiring. Laphroaig continues to maintain an on-site malting operation, which accounts for a small but significant chunk of the barley that they distill. Fermentation is conducted precisely in steel before distillation using a complex seven-still system. The spirit is almost always filled into ex-bourbon barrels. The resulting whisky is one of the world’s great marvels, the confluence of nature’s bounty and human ingenuity. You may not like the way this whisky tastes, but you sure won’t ever forget it. If you do accept the siren’s call to this hollow by the bay, there’s fortunately no going back.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Spirits Buyer | Review Date: June 27, 2023

Sometimes things happen that make you think “it’ll all be ok.” In a world of skyrocketing prices, we’ve managed to put together an incredible deal on one of Scotland’s greatest flagship marques. Laphroaig 10 sets the standard for peated Scotch for many drinkers. It’s intense and yet full of balance and finesse. We’ve locked in pricing on a large parcel that has allowed us to turn the clock back over a decade and offer this classic for the same price we were selling it for in the beginning of 2012! This one isn’t likely to last long, but we will always fight the good fight against inflation in booze pricing and keep doing all we can to get the sharpest pricing to our customers. Whether you rely on the 10-Year as a staple or you’ve been thinking about dipping your toe in the peated waters of Islay, now is definitively the time to buy. Let’s taste! Luminous amber in color, it seems to glow in the glass. The aromatics are intensely rich. Smoke and salt mesh with golden barley and toasted bread. Saturn peaches and green apples receive a BBQ char. Sweet oatmeal laden with brown sugar and maple syrup gloss the smoke. On the palate, vanilla and dew covered herbs mix with the fruit and smoke. Sweet malt stands strong as a backbone and a delicate floral nuance adds incredible depth and intrigue without being overwhelming. The palate weight is huge even at 43% ABV, and the finish lingers for a long time with a pleasant bonfire smoke and reprise of sweet fruit and grain. Lovely.

Silent season is a tradition in the whisky industry where our Still Room and Warehouse close for rest and repair each summer. It’s not a job to be hurried as you can imagine. This year’s silent season will take place from 28 June – 10 August, which will also allow our production team to take a well earned rest after a busy year producing the Glengoyne you all know and love.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SILENT SEASON AT GLENGOYNE

Although we won’t be distilling, the distillery and shop will still remain open 7 days and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors to see the other side of distillery life. We have crafted a new range of Silent Season Experiences for you to enjoy, and you’ll be sure to receive a warm Glengoyne welcome.

THE TEAPOT TOUR AND TASTING

Until the 1970s, many distilleries used to keep their workers sweet with a daily dram; Glengoyne was no exception, but the tipple our workers enjoyed has a story of its own.

To celebrate the launch of Teapot Dram No. 9 join us for a tour of the distillery grounds where you’ll hear tales from Glengoyne’s rich past, and how this iconic whisky came to be. Then enjoy a tutored tasting to unlock the bold and complex flavours of two award-winning whiskies from the Glengoyne Collection. Finally, you’ll be taken to a special spot to enjoy a dram of the newly poured and much sought-after Teapot No.9.

After your tour, the distillery shop will be open if you’d like to take home your very own bottle of Teapot No. 9 before it sells out.

This tour is currently only available from 28 June – 10 August and does not include a tour of our production areas which will be closed for maintenance.

BBQGuru returns!

A lot of you will definitely remember the BBQGuru. They have spoiled us a couple of years by hosting the Saturday BBQ. Remember the roast hog? The past years they have been very busy with hosting excellent BBQ events worldwide and (successfully) competing in competitions. But now it’s time for them to get relaxed again.

So it’s with great pleasure we can announce that Harry Havinga and his relaxed team will return to Maltstock! We won’t put them to work too much. They will provide the Saturday midnight snack. We are really looking forward to this.

So with The Hielander Scottish breakfast, a Friday midnight snack by Sugar Hill and our fantastic regular BBQ team, we perhaps should consider renaming the weekend to foodstock 😉 (and we’ll have more food news in our next newsletter….)

P.S. Of course we also cater for those among you who like their plants better than meat or other dietary requirements! Just make sure to let us know!

Ian Forteath makes his debut!

Perhaps his name won’t ring a bell with everyone. But those who have met Ian know what an amazing relaxed, funny and knowledgeable man he is. We are very happy he will be coming to Maltstock this year. Ian is the Master Blender at angus Dundee distillers, who have Glencadam and Tomintoul in their portfolio. We had the assistant manager of Glencadam 15 years ago at our very first edition. So it’s great to see Angus Dundee return to Maltstock!

Ian will be hosting a masterclass on the Friday and several “Drinks with…” sessions on the Saturday. Definitely something to look forward to!

The Maltstock team will be relaxing in Campbeltown next week. More news when we return!

Have a wonderfully relaxed day!

ULTIMATE SPIRITS CHALLENGE® 2023 Results Announced – Ultimate Whisk(e)y News

ULTIMATE SPIRITS CHALLENGE® 2023 Results Announced

June 12, 2023 (Hawthorne, NY) – Ultimate Spirits Challenge (USC), since 2010 the world’s most prestigious global spirits competition, today releases the results of the 2023 Challenge. USC 2023 proved to be the fourteenth consecutive year of record submissions. Entries arrived from more than 50 spirit-producing nations.

The judging, held through May and early June, determined 68 Chairman’s Trophy winners, 300 Finalists, and 514 Great Values. As always, USC was conducted at the custom-designed Ultimate Beverage Challenge (UBC) Evaluation Center, located in Hawthorne, NY.

Says UBC Co-Founder and Judging Director F. Paul Pacult, “Aside from being the largest USC ever, this year’s Challenge was likewise the most global, with an impressive array of quality distillates from places as far away from New York as China, Australia, India, Kazakhstan, and Chile. Virtually all categories saw healthy gains and all whiskey categories.

“Since producers tend to enter their top-shelf marques into USC, it’s clear that they look to us for the most accurate and unbiased data in the industry.”

After undergoing careful analysis through multiple panels, all products are rated on the 100-point scale by the spirits industry’s most renowned judges including buyers, journalists, educators, authors, and bar owners. Spirits scoring 85+ points receive a detailed tasting note. All spirits scoring 80+ points receive an individual results page, which provides all downloadable marketing material.
