Whisky Lounge Events News – November 2010 – Scotch Whisky News

thewhiskylounge

Hi all,

Well the clocks have gone back, the leaves are turning (or turned depending on where you are) and the nights are drawing in. Don’t you just love the autumn?! At least it truly is the start of traditional whisky-drinking weather!

I am busy in planning mode and it is looking like a very busy 2011 for us (and you!). I will be releasing details of next years early events very soon to enable you to buy these as Xmas pressies…

For now though, we have a very special and exciting series of tastings for you in November and December…

Islay – Blind Fury

After several months of single distillery tastings, with Arran and Springbank, I felt it was time to get back to our routes. Whilst I thought these were great tastings and very interesting, I am also looking forward to presenting this to you.  We are back to the ‘blind’ format of you not knowing what whiskies you have been tastings until the end of the night. This way you can form no preconceptions that can often get in the way of a balanced opinion, plus it gives you the chance to really test your palate and nose without distraction. This event will feature all new whiskies to our Islay tastings – and some new to the market – so you are likely to be tasting drams you have never tasted before! I have had much fun putting it together and I’m sure you will enjoy it even more! I will be organising to have all of the available whiskies for sale on the night too in order to sort out any Xmas present quandaries!

Dates and venues…

Manchester – Saturday 20th November, The Britons Protection, 7.30pm
Leeds – Friday 26th November, City Inn, Granary Wharf, 7.30pm
York – Saturday 27th November, The Cedar Court Grand (new venue!), 7.30pm
London – Tuesday 7th December, The Red Lion, Crown Passage, SW1, 7.30pm
Newcastle – Friday 10th December, Blackfriars, Friar Street, 7.30pm

Tickets are only £20 each and are now available from the website – click here to be taken straight there! http://www.thewhiskylounge.com/Events.aspx

Your Choice…

I am always open to suggestion when it comes to subject matter and I would really like to hear from you on this. As you know, I am now putting together my calendar of tastings for 2011 together and rather than assume what you want, I would like to be able to give you exactly what you want (to a degree!). If you have any ideas for areas we have not covered or whiskies you would like to see us cover off then please email me. I will even throw in a pair of free places on a Whisky Lounge tasting or festival of your choice to the person that comes up with the best workable suggestion. Bargain!

You can also make these suggestions via our Facebook page or Twitter feed if you are up on such things.

That’s all for now, but I will be keeping you updated with all things Whisky Lounge throughout November and December.

Sláinte!

Eddie

Further information: www.glengoyne.com

Glengoyne, Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, is pleased to announce that the second GLENGOYNE CHRISTMAS FOOD & WHISKY FESTIVAL will take place on SATURDAY 4th DECEMBER 2010. This Christmas event with local, like-minded food and drink partners will showcase the best SLOW produce from the area at the home of the SLOWEST distilled Scotch whisky.

Open from 10.30am – 4.30pm it will be a fun day aimed at all ages. In addition to food stalls there will be a range of unusual gift ideas and plenty of activities for all the family.

Distillery tours and tastings will be on offer as well as wonderful food from renowned local chef, TOM LEWIS of MONACHYLE MHOR and his team at MHORfish and MHORbread. Glasgow’s DELIZIQUE and local favourites EDNMILL FARM SHOP will be among a host of other names. For the children there will be story-telling, face painting and of course Santa’s Log Cabin – by the foot of the distillery waterfall at the end of a magical glen.

Building on the success of the 2008 event, Glengoyne have added a number of new initiatives, including a much wider range of food for consumption on the day, additional food and gift stalls, a farmers market, in-depth, one-off super-tastings to showcase the rarest and finest Glengoyne whisky, wandering minstrels, free wine, curry and MHOR master classes, additional heated areas, indoor parking, cooper racing (barrels, not cars) and, of course, a random fire engine.

Stuart Hendry, Brand and Development Manager for Glengoyne commented: “We’ve made a number of improvements this year, but been careful not to lose the unique atmosphere in the distillery courtyard which brought that elusive feeling of Christmas’s past. There was something magical about the last festival and it is important to keep hold of that.

“This year’s Festival will also see the launch of very special micro-release which will give whisky fans a unique insight into the maturation process. This ground breaking approach will appeal to whisky collectors and consumers alike. Further details to follow mid November.

“Glengoyne award-winning Single Malts are made without cutting corners, resulting in a uniquely smooth whisky, which is distilled at a slower rate than any other. We are proud of our ‘slow’ credentials and have been working with local producers such as Tom Lewis at Monachlye Mhor to celebrate these values as well as creating strong and growing links to local food producers and enthusiasts.”

Glengoyne Distillery, which offers an unrivalled visitor experience, is situated just 30 minutes outside Glasgow, looking out over the breath-taking West Highland Way. The event is open to all ages.

For directions and further information visit www.glengoyne.com

Booking for the distillery tours is recommended – contact: 01360 550 229.

Notes:

Owned by independent family company, Ian Macleod Distillers, Glengoyne, Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, has been producing its unique and complex, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky for over 175 years. Using methods passed down for generations, Glengoyne has nurtured and perfected the art of producing the authentic taste of Malt Whisky, untainted by peat smoke. The result is a portfolio of multi-award winning whiskies including the core 10, 17 and 21 Years Old range, as well as special limited edition Single Malts, released each year.

About Slow Food:

Slow Food began in Italy with the foundation of its forerunner organization, Arcigola, in 1986 to resist the opening of a McDonalds near the Spanish steps in Rome. The Slow Food organization spawned by the movement has expanded to include over 83,000 members with chapters in over 122 countries. All totaled, 800 local convivia chapters exist. 360 convivia in Italy — to which the name condotta (singular) / condotte (plural) applies — are composed of 35,000 members, along with 450 other regional chapters around the world. The organizational structure is decentralized: each convivium has a leader who is responsible for promoting local artisans, local farmers, and local flavors through regional events such as Taste Workshops, wine tastings, and farmers’ markets.

ABOUT GLENDULLAN

There is a local saying in Dufftown: “Rome was built on seven hills and Dufftown stands on seven stills.” Glendullan is the seventh and last distillery built in the town and began production in 1898.

The town of Dufftown was founded by the 4th Earl of Fife to provide employment after the Napoleonic Wars. Thanks to its naturally pure water, it soon became the centre of the distilling industry. Today, the town lays claim to the title of malt whisky capital of the world and the Glendullan distillery continues to thrive on the original site where it was built in 1897.

Production began in 1898 and in 1902 the Glendullan single malt was supplied by royal request to King Edward VII. In 1972, the distillery was expanded to meet demand, with a further six stills added.

Today, Glendullan produces more whisky than most of the distilleries in the Classic Malts selection. Given that The Singleton of Glendullan has been so well received, we can’t imagine there’ll be any let up soon.

The Singleton of Glendullan has a rich, smooth character that is derived from the combination of spirit matured in European Sherry Oak casks and American Bourbon Oak casks.

American Oak brings subtle, honeyed hints of sweet vanilla while European Oak brings lush fruit and balancing dryness. It’s this blend of American Bourbon Cask and European Sherry Cask aging that provides the unique balance and character.

This round, elegant and finely balanced malt comes from the heart of Speyside. Malted barley, often locally grown, is carefully selected, and pure water is drawn from the high, wooded hills above the distillery glen. We bring them together slowly to ensure the spirit’s round, elegant and beautifully balanced nature.

We take longer still to prepare each distillation, pausing to find the most fragrant, rich fruit flavors.

THE SINGLETON TASTING with MASTER DISTILLER – MICHAEL NICOLSON

Join Mike, a 36 year veteran of scotch whisky distillation, as he walks us through the Singleton of Glendullan, and brings to life the Singleton in a can’t miss event during the BCLDB’s PREMIUM SPIRITS RELEASE! Catering by Joe Fortes.
