Mulberry Bank Auctions Pre Sale Tasting – Scotch Whisky News

Mulberry Bank Auctions is pleased to announce its second pre-sale tasting. Taking place at our west end auction rooms in Glasgow on Tuesday the 27th of March at 7.30pm. We will be showcasing a stunning line up of 8 incredible spirits. Apart from such single malt gems as a Glen Grant 30 year old distilled in the 1930s and an incredibly rare Glendronach 1970, we will also have a Caroni Rum from the 1920s and last, but certainly not least, an incredible 1870, pre-phylloxera Grand Champagne Cognac. And as if that wasn’t enough there will also be a selection of fine Scottish cheeses, courtesy of local cheesemonger George Mewes, to sample as well. All in all it should be the tasting event of a lifetime. If you thought the first tasting was good, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Tickets are strictly limited and sold on a first come first served basis. They are priced at £50 per head and are available directly from our auction house by calling 0141 225 8181.

7.30-10.30pm. March 27th. Mulberry Bank Auction House. 26a St Vincent Crescent. G3 8LH.

The full line up is:

1: Bruichladdich 1971 39yo single cask. A Privately bottled single cask that has been bottled at a naturally low cask strength of 39%.

2: Bruichladdich official vintage 1970. The legendary 1970 vintage from Bruichladdich, bottled back in 2002.

3: Martell 3 Star cognac. An old bottling from the 1930s with a spring cap seal.

4: Grand Champagne Cognac from an unknown producer. Vintage 1870. Bottled by Cockburn & Co of Leith, Edinburgh. Bottled around the turn of the 20th Century this is from one of the greatest vintages of the 19th century.

There will be a break here for a selection of Scottish cheeses supplied by local cheesemonger George Mewes.

5: Caroni Navy Rum. 90 proof. Bottled sometime in the 1920s.

6: Glen Grant 30yo by G&M. Distilled sometime in the 1930s and bottled in the 1960s. A great chance to taste a pre-war malt.

7: Dalwhinnie 36yo 1966. Bottled 2002.

8: Glendronach 1970. A single cask bottled by Cadenheads in the 1990s under their legendary White Label series. This is from a great vintage and, unusually, is not matured in a sherry cask.

Arkwrights COMPASS BOX TASTING AND BLENDING SCHOOL – THURSDAY 15TH MARCH 2012 – Scotch Whisky News

*COMPASS BOX TASTING AND BLENDING SCHOOL – THURSDAY 15TH MARCH 2012*

We had to restrict numbers for the Compass Box Blending School in November last year to 32 but those of you who managed to get a ticket will vouch for what a brilliant evening it was. This year those wonderful folk at Compass Box have kindly agreed to come along and run a couple more sessions for us – the first of which will be on Thursday 15th March and the second of which will be in the autumn.

The evening will start off with a tasting of some Compass Box whiskies and then, after an introductory guide to blending, you will be let loose to create your very own whisky and release your inner Master Blender! Not only that, you get to take home 10cl of the wondrous dram you have created!

This is not an opportunity to be missed – see below for all the details and if you have any queries just contact us.

COMPASS BOX TASTING AND BLENDING SCHOOL
Thursday 15th March 2012 (7.00 for 7.30pm)
Stanton House Hotel, Stanton Fitzwarren

Céline Têtu of Compass Box will be coming along to present not only a tasting of some of their fabulous range of vatted and blended whiskies but also to give those present the opportunity to taste some of the different Single Malts and Single Grains that are the building blocks of these small batch whiskies. She will use these to illustrate how John Glaser, the creative genius who founded Compass Box, takes a main component whisky and then adds in a few, carefully selected others that both complement the core whisky and increase its complexity.

Then, having been shown how to blend whisky, you will get the chance to have a go yourself. You will be blending 10cl of your own whisky – a unique creation that you can then take away with you.

The ticket price is £20 per person, and this includes the tasting and blending school plus the 10cl bottle of whisky that you create. As usual, your ticket also entitles you to a discount of £3 against a bottle of one of the featured whiskies if bought or ordered on the night of the tasting.

Because of the ‘hands on’ nature of the Blending School the numbers will be restricted to a maximum of 32 people, and tickets allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. There is sure to be a great demand for this very special event so it is best to book ASAP. To buy tickets just log on to www.whiskyandwines.com and place an order for the number you require, or telephone us on (01793) 765071, or call in and see us at Arkwrights, The Dormers, Highworth, Wiltshire.

Admission to the tasting is by ticket only, and most, if not all, of the whiskies tasted will be available to purchase on the night so come prepared.

This is going to be a whole new way of experiencing whisky and promises to be a very enjoyable evening. Come along and join us!

Maltstock – The Releaxed Whisky Weekend – Whisky News

The Relaxed Whisky Weekend

7 – 9 September 2012

Fellow Whisky enthusiasts,

The first newsletter of 2012, it’s about time. We have been busy the past few months. And so have you! Tickets sales are going really well. Fantastic! Looking forward to seeing you all in September. Or perhaps before then at one of the whisky fairs on our Maltstock promo tour. We would also like to welcome all the friendly people we’ve met at the whisky fair in the Hague last November. We really enjoyed meeting you and hope to see many of you in September.

Club Bottle Battle

Try saying that ten times in a row 😉 There are a lot of whisky clubs out there. We have listed 462 on our website so far. Many of them do their own club bottlings. We thought it would be fun to compare those bottles. So we would like to invite all whisky clubs out there to enter one or more of their club bottlings. The label has to be clearly state it is a bottling for your whisky club. It does not have to be a recent bottling. You’re also allowed to enter more than one bottle and thus increase your chances.

You can bring the bottle to Maltstock yourself. But please send us an e-mail with details of the bottling before August 1st. If you are not able to join us at Maltstock this year, but you would like to enter your club bottling, no problem. Just send it to Maltstock HQ, Nimrodstraat 54, 6531 LH, Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

We’re also looking for a sponsor to provide a nice award for the winning club. Please contact us if you’re interested.

Highlander Inn breakfast

We are very happy that the Highlander Inn will again travel from lovely Craigellachie in Speyside to Maltstock to make sure everybody will get an excellent Scottish breakfast. Of course you do not have to wait until September to try their excellent breakfast and enjoy their fantastic service. All you have to do is travel to Craigellachie Scotland and experience their warm welcome. Visit www.whiskyinn.com for all details. You can also try a real (Maltstock) whisky breakfast!

Maltstock promo tour

The Maltstock promo team will be on the road again the coming months. We hope to meet you at one of the whisky fairs. We will be at:

– 11 and 12 February, Gent, Belgium
– 18 February, Hielander whisky festival Alkmaar, the Netherlands
– 11 March, Duncan Taylor at L&B cafe in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
– 23-25 March, Whiskyfestival Noord-Nederland, Groningen, the Netherlands
– 28 April, whisky fair Limburg, Germany
– 3-7 May, Spirit of Speyside, Scotland

Promote Maltstock

We really enjoy seeing Maltstock fans promoting Maltstock. Check out our Facebook page for some fantastic pictures. Keep them coming! You can either post them on our Facebook page or e-mail them us. If you would like to promote Maltstock as well, please contact us and we can provide a banner and flyers.

We’re currently working on the Maltstock program. More on this in the next newsletter. We’re also open to creative ideas, so if you have a good or crazy idea, let us know. Make sure you don’t miss out and get your tickets on time. Last year Maltstock was sold out.

See you in September, see you at Maltstock!

A Precious Scotch to Share and Savor Old Malt Cask Glen Grant 30 Y. O. – Scotch Whisky News

Federal Wines & Spirits

A Precious Scotch to Share and Savor Old Malt Cask Glen Grant 30 Y. O.

Today we offer to you a 30 year old single-malt from The Glen Grant distillery. This single-cask independent bottling is a wonderful dram of which we only have 15 bottles. We feel it will go very fast.

The bottler, Old Malt Cask, is one line of single cask scotch whisky from The Laing family. It is one of many brands from this scotch blending company, which was started in 1948 – 1949 by Fred Douglas Laing and is now run by his two son’s: Fred and Stewart.

Boston has not seen enough from these brands in the past, now their future is looking much brighter with a new importer and wholesaler. We should see many more very good selections from their holdings of single malts and single grain whiskies.

This 30 Y.O. Glen Grant is from a refill sherry cask bottled at the cask strength of 46.9% (with a few drops of water it really opens up). The sherry on the lighter side, and integrates seamlessly with the malt. Very well balanced, it shows wonderful depth. A moorish dram that not enough people will taste.

Below are tasting notes that are on the bottle.

Nose– malty freshness, sweet biscuit(sponge style) with a citric aroma

Palate– smooth, balanced with sweet spices, delicate for it’s age!

Finish– medium long, remains fresh and carries an herbal quality.

Pricing   Reg. $ 264.99 – Sale $234.99
