Love Bourbon? Travel? Here’s A Unique Way To Combine Both Passions – American Whiskey News

Love bourbon? Travel? Here’s a unique way to combine both passions:

Join us for our “Ultimate Bourbon Experience,” April 26-29, 2012, in Kentucky, the bourbon capital of the world. This is not your average Bourbon Trail tour, but consists of exclusive experiences thatcan’t be found anywhere else. The trip includes private opportunities to sample, create, and buy rare spirits; learn from small craft distillers and industry icons; and generally indulge in a favorite hobby in a relaxing and truly memorable way.

Highlights include:

  • Private Distillery Access: We’ll enjoy the rare opportunity to privately tour the Willett distillery, which is not open to the public, but is renowned for its small batch bourbons like its Pot Still Reserve and Old Bardstown Collection. We’ll sample and can purchase bourbons not available anywhere else in the world. We’ll also enjoy an extended, behind-the scenes tour of the Buffalo Trace distillery, home of Pappy Van Winkle, among other legendary and new experimental bourbons. Both tours will be private and led by expert distillers and owners; at Buffalo Trace, we’ll be instructed as we share in the rare opportunity to sample and then select a barrel to be bottled exclusively for our group.
  •  In-Depth Interaction with Industry Insiders and Icons: We’ll spend one evening pairing fine bourbons and a special dinner with Mike Veach of the Filson Historical Society in Louisville. Mike has been inducted to the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame, and is known as “the only professional bourbon historian in the country.” Another night, we’ll discuss all things bourbon with Lincoln and Wes Henderson, who many bourbon aficionados know from Woodford Reserve and Old Forester, and recently for their Angel’s Envy brand, a unique bourbon aged in port wine casks that Bourbon Buzz called “a Spiritual Awakening.”
  • BourbonFest Sampler in Bardstown: We’ll attend this more intimate version of the iconic Kentucky Bourbon Festival. We’ll meet Master Distillers, brand ambassadors, and industry experts, tasting many offerings, and as desired bid in a silent auction of unique bourbon items.
  • Relaxed VIP Treatment, Small Group: This will be an indulgent trip in terms of accommodations, transportation, cuisine and bourbon, but will be enjoyed in the company of a small, relaxed group. A quick getaway to Louisville, but years of memories: truly a Trip for the Bucket (Barrel) List!

Kensington Calgary “Malt Messenger Bulletin – Spring Tasting Schedule is Now Online!” – Whisky News

Andrew writes,

Our Spring Tasting Schedule is now online:  https://www.kensingtonwinemarket.com/tastings/register.php .

We have 28 new tastings to delight and entertain you over the coming months including 4 new Scotch Malt Whisky Society Tastings, a Japanese Single Malt Tasting, an American Whiskey as well as rum and tequila tastings. I’ve lost track of whether this is the 4th or 5th Spring Single Malt Festival, so we’ll just call it our Annual Spring Single Malt Festival. It will feature no less than 100 of the best whiskies in the province, and is limited to as many people; so don’t delay grabbing a ticket or two. The night after the festival, as is tradition, we will be hosting a special tasting, in this case, The Ultimate Dalmore Tasting. The tasting will feature two different Dalmore 40 Year Olds (the old bottling as well as the new Aurora), the 45 Year Old Astrum and three other rare old Dalmore vintages including the 1978 and 1974. It will be a memorable evening, and we might just attract a special guest! I am also especially psyched about our Japanese whisky tasting “Lost in Translation”. This special tasting will feature a flight of 7 Japanese whiskies, 4 of which are exceptionally rare vintage expressions.

Whatever your taste there is lots to offer. As always the tastings fill on a first serve basis, and you can register in store, by phone 403-283-8000 and online https://www.kensingtonwinemarket.com/tastings/register.php .

There are also some exciting new whiskies in stock too! Though you will have to wait until the next Full Malt Messenger for more details on them, here is a teaser:

  1. Compass Box The Last Vatted Malt – A not so subtle poke in the eye of the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) who changed the rules classifying whisky types; not to everyone’s advantage… Much more in the Malt Messenger about this exclusive KWM whisky. – 53.7% – A marriage of 35 year old sherried Speyside whisky and 26 year old peated Islay whisky. – $247.99 + GST
  2. Glenfiddich 40 Year 2011 – World Whiskies Awards 2012 Double Winner:Best Speyside 21 Years & Over and Best Speyside Whisky – $2729.99 + GST
  3. Masterson’s 10 Year Canadian Rye Whisky – Canadian Whisky Awards Whisky of the Year! – $106.99 + GST

Spirit of Toronto 2012: Masterclasses Now Online! – Scotch Whisky News

Masterclass Schedule Now Online!

Indeed, good things come to those who wait: we’re pleased to announce that this year’s Spirit of Toronto Masterclass Series is now online and has expanded to a total of 15 sessions, providing our esteemed patrons with the most varied line-up of tutored tastings thus far.

Seats for these tastings can only be reserved when you purchase tickets to the show which go on sale Monday April 2 at 10:00am. Do read on if you’re uncertain as to which class to attend…

The Hardest Working Man in Whisky?

Whisky Advocate, Spirits Business Magazine, Whiskeria, The World Whisky Review, Whishy Magazine, “The World’s Best Whiskies” and his upcoming “1001 Whiskies You Must Try Before You Die”… if whisky writer Dominic Roskrow isn’t the hardest working man in whisky, then we aren’t sure who is!

What we do know is that he’s very excited about his first trip to Toronto to present “Green Giants” about the amazing new crop of Irish whiskeys released in 2011, including the fantabulous cask strength version of Redbreast and the Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy.

Those of you unable to get a seat at Dominic’s tasting will still be able to chat and sample with him at his World Whisky table, featuring whiskies specially imported at Dominic’s behest from the four corners of the globe.

Speaking of the four corners of the globe, both France and India are represented in this year’s masterclass schedule courtesy of the Rémy Martin House of Cognac, and Amrut Distillers, makers of Indian single malt whisky that rivals the best of what you’ll find in Scotland.

That said, Scotland has not been forgotten and masterclasses with Michael Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail and Mike Harrison of The Glenrothes will showcase the best of the Highlands, as will Regis Lemaitre in “Sketches of Spain”, a tasting and education in the art of sherried whisky.

Two other masterclasses will look at a different kind of ‘auld alliance’: “Whisky and Cheese” with writer Stephen Beaumont, and “Whisky and Chocolate” with Ferne Glaser and Erich Sisa.

Scotch, Bourbon or Canadian?

Our friends at Beam Global Canada have outdone themselves and are bringing not one but three outstanding brand ambassadors to this year’s show: Tish Harcus, Marc Laverdiere and Matt Jones.

While each will be presenting their own masterclass—Canadian Club, Highland Park and “The Original Small Batch Bourbon Collection”—these three dynamic presenters will then face off with their best samples as they present the “Great Whisk(e)y Debate”. You, the audience, will be judging the whisky and performances so we very much look forward to declaring the People’s Choice!

For those who like to stay closer to home, John Hall will be previewing not one but two upcoming Forty Creek special releases, while Davin de Kergommeaux will be presenting “Canadian Whisky, For Export Only”including perhaps the only single cask of Canadian whisky to be bottled at full strength.

Last but not least, there are those of you who like a surprise and if so I invite you to join me for a sampling of The Editor’s Collection, a session in which I will be pouring whiskies from my personal cellar, a collection I started when I first launched the Single Minded newsletter.

While the complete line-up remains undecided (woman’s perogative and all that), I will be opening a silent still that I don’t believe many have tried before, and I look forward to this almost as much as I look forward to a ‘wee blether’ with a few of the long time friends of Spirit of Toronto.

Some Fine Print

Masterclass seats may be reserved when tickets for this year’s show go on sale Monday April 2nd at 10:00am. Tickets may be purchased from Roy Thomson Hall’s box office online, by phone or in person. Tickets are $129 HST included and a reminder will go out the morning of April 2 to those of you subscribed to this list.

Early admission is $35 (HST included) and reserves seating in any one of the pre-show masterclasses starting at 5:30pm, with priority entry into the main tasting hall when the class is over. The remainder of the classes are scheduled for 7:00pm and 8:30pm and may be reserved at a cost of $15 (HST included) per person per class.

Based on past years, please expect that most classes will be fully reserved within the first hour that tickets go on sale.

Lastly, there will be 3 sessions held in The Whisky Suite: please note that these will be staffed “pass around” tastings in a lounge setting: there will be no classroom seating, and some patrons will be standing.

Coming in from out of town?

Spirit of Toronto has once again secured excellent room rates for our guests coming in from out of town. Full details and links can be found on the Hotel page of the website.

Time: 7 pm

Place: Cork & Fin, 221 Carrall St., Gastown

Join Iain McCallum, Master of Malts, as he hosts a very special Bowmore Whisky Dinner prepared by Cork & Fin’s Chef.

Iain first joined Morrison Bowmore at 16 years of age, and was initially employed as a trainee lab technician within the distiller’s Springburn head office. He quickly became committed to a career in the whisky industry and rose through the ranks from qualifying as an organic chemist at 22, his roles included four years as trainee distilleries manager at Auchentoshan, Bowmore and Glen Garioch. This role was hands-on, involving everything from malting and mashing to working the night shift. It was during this period he worked with legendary Bowmore distillery manager Eddie MacAffer and gained a tremendous amount from his expertise. He was later appointed senior blender for Morrison Bowmore then, in addition, distillery manager at Auchentoshan. Iain was believed to be Scotland’s youngest distillery manager when appointed at 30 years of age – certainly the youngest in Auchentoshan’s 185 year history. In his current appointment as Master of Malts, he leads consumer and trade education through tastings, Master Classes and experiential events around the world.

An Afternoon With Curtis – American Whiskey News

Come enjoy an afternoon with Curtis McMillan of the McMillan Distillery & Corey Bunnewith (on the bar) while they take the prohibition recipe of Moonshine and turn it into a cocktail you wont be able to live without. From the success of the last class involving moonshine, we’ve decided to do a second class on the white spirits and infusions. We’re looking to push the boundaries of what’s thought to be possible with white spirits and help the customer try new and exciting taste that they’ve never had before. We’ll be sampling eight different infusions and will also be talk about how the consumer can make these infusions themselves at home. Bottoms Up!

Malt Messenger Bulletin – Ancient Malts 40 Year Olds Tasting – Scotch Whisky News

Dear Malt Messenger Subscribers,

As many of you may have seen in last week’s Malt Messenger, Kensington Wine Market has some epic tastings coming up next week. On Thursday March 29th and Friday the 30th we will be holding two identical Ancient Malts Tastings. These are the first Ancient Malts Tastings we’ve offered  in more than a year. Generally we will open one exceptionally rare and expensive whisky at the tasting, but this year I have decided to  take a different approach; we’re going to open seven… seven 40 year old whiskies.

The idea came to me late last year when it occurred to me that for the first time ever we had enough whiskies to do a vertical of seven 40 Year Old whiskies, six of them distillery bottled by their distillery. Begining in December I started setting aside many of these whiskies, some of which have since sold out. This is without doubt the first vertical tasting of 40 year old whiskies in Canada and Alberta, and surely one of the first in the world.

We will be sampling 40 year old whiskies from Glendronach, Glenfarclas, BenRiach, HighlandPark, Bowmore, Fettercairn and Glenfiddich. Most of these whiskies have received very high scores, and a couple of them have come into Canada in such small quantities (less than 6 bottles) that they will never be tasted by more than a few. To add icing to this already decadent cake all participants will  be receiving a bespoke whisky glass and will have a taste of the Gordon & MacPhail Gernerations Glenlivet 70 Year ($21,999.99). The tasting costs$275 + GST, which is a pretty good deal considering all 8 bottles of these whiskies would set you back more than $30,000.00 if you could even find them all!

There will be other epic tastings over the years to come but this one is a one off, which will never be duplicated. There are still tickets for both nights, though only 4-5 for the Friday seating. See below for more details on the tasting.

Slainté!

THE ANCIENT MALTS TASTNGS – Thursday March 29th and Friday March 30th – $275.00+GST

Once or twice a year the Kensington Wine Market puts on an epic tasting of whiskies most of us can only dream about buying. Over the years we’ve opened the Black Bowmore 1964, Gold Bowmore 1964, Macallan 50 Year Lalique, Auchentoshan 1957 50 Year (both incarnations) and other rare whiskies just to name a few. These tastings are an opportunity for a community of people to come together and share an experience that most of us could never have on our own. Late last year it occurred to me that I had access to a number of distillery bottled 40 year old whiskies and I thought to myself, why not hold a 40 year olds tasting? On Thursday and Friday March 29th and 30th we will be conducting two back to back tastings featuring seven 40 year old whiskies. Six of the seven whiskies are distillery bottled, all of them are exceptionally rare and many of them rank among the most highly scored whiskies in the world. To sweeten the deal everyone will receive a commemorative Glencairn glass and as a special bonus will get a taste of the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Year.

This will be an unparalleled tasting event, and a night(s) to remember. The whisky list is as follows:

  1. BenRiach 1971 40 Year – $660.99(sold out)
    • Exclusive to KWM
    • 93ptsSerge Vanlentin, Whisk Fun
    • 96.5pts Jim Murray
  2. Fettercairn 40 Year – $1515.99
    • Exclusive to KWM
    • 92ptsJim Murray
    • 89pts Serge Valentin, Whisky Fun
  3. Glendronach 1971 40 Year – $703.99
    • Exclusive to KWM
    • 89pts Jim Murray
  4. Glenfarclas 40 Year – $499.99
    • 95ptsWhisky Advocate
    • 94pts Jim Murray
  5. Glenfiddich 40 Year – $2729.99
    • 96pts Jim Murray
  6. Highland Park 40 Year – $1854.99
    • 91ptsSerge Valentin, Whisky Fun
    • 90.5pts Jim Murray
  7. Signatory Bowmore 1970 40 Year – $1136.99
    • Exclusive to KWM
  8. G&M Generation Glenlivet 1940 70 Year – $5,999.99(200ml) $21,999.99(700ml)
    • Exclusive to KWM
    • 95.5pts Jim Murray

This tasting event is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Not counting the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Year old, a bottle of each of these 7 whiskies would set you back more than $10,000.00 if you could even find them all. You’d need more than treble that to buy a full bottle of everything including the Glenlivet 70 Year.
