Germany Joins Quest to Find Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival’s Top Drams – Scotch Whisky News

Peter Klas 2

Germany joins quest to find Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival’s top drams

For the first time in the history of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Whisky Awards, lovers of the amber nectar overseas will play a part in helping choose the region’s finest whiskies with the quest to find region’s best drams going global – to Germany.

Customers of Scotia Spirit in Cologne will gather at the specialist whisky retailer today (Thursday, April 21) for a tasting when they will cast their votes for their top choices from the six finalists shortlisted by a panel of industry leaders, acclaimed writers and specialist retailers.

The German judging will be overseen by Linda Mellis, a director of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, who is jetting out to Cologne to meet up with shop owner Peter Klas, a good friend of the festival.

Peter gave up a career in film and media to pursue his passion for Scotland, opening up his specialist store stocked with more than 450 different kinds of whiskies and other luxury food and drink products from Scotland two years ago.

Scotland became his ideal escape from pressures of working in a fast-paced industry and during visits he developed a taste for Scotch whisky, which led him on a path to the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. He now invites customers to join him on an annual excursion to the drams-fest with a record 17 people accompanying him this year from April 28 to May 2.

With limited places on his organised visit, but huge interest in Speyside’s best known export, a conversation with festival chairman James Campbell, discussing ways in which other German whisky lovers could feel involved in the festival, set the ball rolling for the Cologne judging event.

Peter says his shop has gone from strength to strength since opening, with both interest and demand for luxury Scottish produce and he’s looking forward to being the first satellite tasting site outside of Speyside for this year’s awards.

“The whole atmosphere at the festival is wonderful, and I hope we can try and recreate some of what is so special about the festival by sampling these whiskies in my tasting room on Thursday,” Peter explains.

“Speyside is special as it has the biggest range of malt whisky, its nature and scenery is great and it’s the best place to learn about whisky.

“My customers are really looking forward to taking part in voting for what they think are the best whiskies, and being part in what is one of the major events of the festival.”

The votes of around 70 customers and media guests will be counted and included along with other votes made on Speyside during the festival. Winners will be announced on Sunday, May 1 at the whisky awards ceilidh in the Memorial Hall, Dufftown.

James Campbell, chairman of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, says, “Speyside whisky is renowned the world over and we are pleased that this year, for the first time, we have been able to add an international dimension to our whisky awards.

“Our friends in Germany will be among the whisky lovers who determine the results, and being a public vote makes these awards all the more coveted.

“Who knows, this could be the start of something bigger. Maybe in future years we will have whisky lovers in other cities in the world use their nose, knowledge and taste buds to choose the winners in each of the three strongly contested categories.”

The awards are sponsored by coppersmiths Forsyths of Rothes and the three categories for 12 years old and under, 13-20 years old and 21 years old and over.

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival will welcome visitors from all over the world – and closer to home – from April 28 to May 2.

The jam-packed festival programme takes place in various locations across the scenic Speyside region when people have the chance to enjoying food, music, heritage, culture and of course whisky along the way.

This year’s programme has almost 500 different events to choose from with whisky train rides, comedy, ceilidhs, food events and heritage trails, in addition to whisky tastings and distillery tours, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Tickets are available at www.spiritofspeyside.com. The Festival is also active on social media – facebook.com/WhiskyFestival and @spirit_speyside on Twitter and on Instagram.

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Appoints Two New Volunteer Directors to Board – Scotch Whisky News

AA New directors

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival appoints two new volunteer directors to board

Two new faces have joined the board of volunteers behind the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, helping to ensure that the 17th edition of the event later this month will be one of the best on record.

Industry stalwart Linda Mellis – who spent four decades with drinks giant Diageo before her retirement – has become a director of the Festival, along with Speyside Cooperage visitor centre manager Gill Reid.

Both women have been responsible for delivering first class visitor experiences in their careers, and plan to use their skills and expertise to benefit the Festival and its many thousands of guests from home and abroad.

The curtain rises on the annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival on April 28, signalling the start of five days packed full of whisky, music, food and fun at locations throughout the region.

Although the Festival is managed by one full-time member of staff, the volunteer board of directors is responsible for ensuring its continued growth and position as one of the leading events of its kind in the world.

James Campbell, chairman of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, believes that Linda and Gill will be excellent additions to the board due to their vast knowledge of the whisky industry and customer service fields.

He adds, “The Festival aims to marry the opportunity to appreciate and learn more about our local whisky industry with a first-class visitor experience. Both Linda and Gill will be instrumental in helping to guide us as we move forward and grow the Festival in future years.

“Many of our visitors are quite staggered to learn that the driving force behind the Festival are volunteers who willingly give up their time to help because they feel so passionate about whisky and what the Speyside region has to offer.

“It’s through their vision – and the sterling efforts of our festival manager Pery Zakeri in turning the vision into a reality – that the Festival has evolved into the leading event that it is today.

“As we prepare to raise a glass in toast to another successful Festival, I would like to thank all of our volunteer directors, past and present, for their outstanding commitment to making the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival an event like no other.”

Linda worked for Diageo for 43 years, having started out as a typist before moving up the ranks. Before her retirement earlier this year, she was responsible for managing brand support malt distilling and marketing the distillery visitor centres and brand homes.

A long-standing supporter of the Festival since its inception in the late 1990s, she was recognised by the organisers for her commitment when they named her Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Ambassador of the Year last year.

Gill has been the manager of Speyside Cooperage Visitor Centre – a five-star attraction welcoming around 22,000 people annually – for two years. She has been responsible for raising the bar on the visitor experience by developing a 4-D extra-sensory film presentation and mini-cinema on site.

Prior to taking up the post, she was a partner in her family business – one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of oak barrel garden products. She was responsible for developing the firm’s export market and is a previous winner of UK Trade & Investment’s Young Exporter of the Year.

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival programme comprises almost 500 different events including distillery tours and tastings, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, food, music and comedy.

Tickets for events in the 2016 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival programme are available to buy at www.spiritofspeyside.com/. The Festival is also active on social media – facebook.com/WhiskyFestival and @spirit_speyside on Twitter and on Instagram.

In Their Own Words – Colin Dunn, Whisky Ambassador, Diageo

AA Colin

Diageo whisky ambassador Colin Dunn

Colin Dunn has done more than most to get people switched on to whisky. After a spell with Suntory, he moved to Diageo in 2008, educating drinkers about the delights of the company’s numerous single malts, as well as the Johnnie Walker range. Here he talks about his life in whisky…

‘When I first tried the Classic Malts, I was amazed how different they all were, and how I needed to know more about them – it was like Howard Carter opening the tomb of Tutankhamun

I’m not Scottish, but I’m Cornish, so there’s a bit of Gaelic there. But people would say “You’re not Scottish, what do you know about whisky?”!’

‘In the early tastings I did, all the people I spoke to were over 50 and male. Trying to teach them how to taste whisky was very difficult’

‘In this country [the UK], Japanese whisky didn’t exist 15 years ago

I still get a buzz trying whiskies from Lark or Kavalan, not just Diageo whiskies’

‘I think of bartenders as alchemists; they create new flavours. We’ve moved on from the Martini and the Mojito

The first time I tried Laphroaig, it put me off whisky for a good 10 minutes!’

‘There are many times I’ve been given a 50-year-old whisky and the person who gave it to me told me it was fantastic just because it was a 50-year-old whisky. But I’ve tasted 50-year-old whiskies that have done nothing for me; it’s all about how the whisky evolves’

Cardhu is the most bourbonesque distillery in the Diageo portfolio’

‘I remember the first time I tried Japanese whisky; I realised it was the missing link between bourbon and Scotch

Where will I be in five years’ time? Please welcome Colin Dunn. He used to work for Diageo; now he works for the Cornish Whisky Company!’

WITH IAN CHANG, MASTER DISTILLER

Join us for an evening of whisky from one of the most exciting new producers in the world – Kavalan from Taiwan. We will be joined by master distiller Ian Chang, who will talk us through the whiskies and explain how they are made.

Kavalan doesn’t do anything by halves, as its huge distillery in Yilan, northern Taiwan, will attest. Built next to a natural spring, already used by parent company King Car as a source for its mineral water, it has been operational since 2005, and its first whisky hit the market in late 2008. After years of waiting, it burst on to the international market in 2011, and has been winning awards for its excellent whiskies ever since.

AA Ian

Our host for the evening will be Ian Chang. A graduate of Reading University, Ian joined Kavalan in 2005 and helped start production. Since then he has developed the Kavalan range of whiskies and acts as global brand ambassador, travelling around the world to teach whisky fans about the distillery.

We will be trying six whiskies from the Kavalan range, including the World Whiskies Awards World’s Best Single Malt Whisky 2015: Solist Vinho Barrique.
